Why we don't take CNN or Bill Nye seriously anymore: asteroid> meteor> global warming

Paul Westhaver writes in Tips and Notes:

CNN talking empty head (Feyerick) asks Bill Nye if approaching Meteor was a result of global warming…. but Bill’s response is oddly disquieting.

“Except it’s all science,” Nye said rescuing Feyerick. “The word meteorology and the word meteor come from the same root, so…”

Nye went on to discuss the asteroid which has missed impacting earth by 15 minutes. He says if this body were to impact over a populated area like New York City, that municipality would be completely leveled.

http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2013/02/10/CNN-Anchor-Asks-Bill-Nye-If-Global-Warming-caused-Near-Earth-Asteroid

It gets worse. Mumbles McGuirk adds in Tips and Notes:

[T]his Saturday MSNBC broadcast with Bill Nye explaining that GW will cause storms to spin counter-clockwise in the ‘new normal.’

Bill Nye explains the science of storms

Bill Nye “The Science Guy” joins MSNBC’s Craig Melvin to talk about how climate change contributed to this weekend’s blizzard in the Northeast.

Gotta love the way Nye explains the Coriolis force.

We can only hope the stupid burns up in the atmosphere, either by re-entry or Global Warming.

Does anybody realize how stupid society is becoming, or at least how stupid the “news” is? Society is being dumbed down, and the number of news reports that talk about “climate change” every time we have “weather” is a direct proxy to the reduction of national average IQ.

I firmly believe that, without a scientific foundation or decent education, more and more of these people will show up, and then every imagination will be valid.
Perhaps cAGW will cause the parallel universes to coalesce, and storms will enter in from that nether dimension.
Maybe Romulans and Kardassians (related to the Kardashians?—the names are too similar to rule out) will enter from the neutral zone of the future?
Reality and fantasy are merging…”Major Tom calling ground control!”

This exchange pretty much confirms that Bill Nye’s role as contributor to CNN is to support whatever globalist agenda CNN is peddling (as per Ted Turner) as opposed to providing objective independent scientific insight. The normal reaction would have been to immediately dismiss what Feyerick implied as nonsense, but Nye knows he is a ‘tool’ of CNN, so disagreeing with the presenter was not something that would come naturally to him.
Marc Morano eviscerated Nye on Piers Morgan back in Dec-2012, and that was despite Morano quite clearly being one against two in that debate.
The integrity of CNN is the main issue that I am concerned with, as opposed to Bill Nye, as he is just one contributor. There has been a recent trend of becoming increasingly brazen in their advocacy, as opposed to at least trying to give the impression that they are impartial presenters and “moderators” of debates.

“Nye went on to discuss the asteroid which has missed impacting earth by 15 minutes.”
We’re very lucky. If we had just a little more CO2 in the air, we’d have been hit. As you may know, carbon dioxide creates a kind of ‘super gravity’ whenever it gets above 350 ppm concentrations. This super gravity is especially powerful on rocks in vacuums. It’s all very technical. Don’t bother looking it up. Frankly, I’m amazed didn’t hit us.

Primitive cultures would often ascribe natural events to human behavior. The Gods were said to be angry. The effect of this sort or rhetoric was to give the political class and the high priests control over the society. The population believed that the high priests knew what would keep the gods happy, and by extension, keep them safe. So the propulsion would go along with whatever the priests said to do. If that meant sacrificing a virgin, then do be it.
The Global Warming hysteria is leading us back to primitivism, with guys like Bill Nye and Al Gore claimg to be the high priests.

I know this is off topic, mea culpa, I plead “slowness”.
About five posts ago there was a post “Has Global Warming Stalled?” It presented a graph showing temperatures and the concentration of atmospheric CO2. The graph showed that CO2 varies about 10 parts in 400 each year. If I haven’t messed up my calculations, that implies a time constant of something like ten years. That seems to mean that, if we quit emitting CO2 now, the anthropogenic contribution would be scrubbed from the atmosphere in about fifty years.
Why does this matter? The warmists rely on a very long residence time for CO2 to bolster their case that the increase in atmospheric CO2 is anthropogenic. They say that the natural sources and sinks of CO2 balance and that anthropogenic CO2 enters the atmosphere and stays there. Their accounts don’t work if you take a shorter residence time.
One of the skeptical arguments is that CO2 levels follow temperature changes rather than being their cause. It seems to me that, if CO2 has a short residence time, it is good evidence for that case. In other words, anthropogenic CO2 is taken up reasonably quickly and the increase in CO2 is likely due to natural causes.
Am I missing something?

Chris

I laughed when I heard this but quickly realized that as an un testable hypothesis, it is no worse than all the other ridiculous ideas about CO2 and GW that are currently driving national energy and enviormenmental policy.

Oh, come on. Sure, he’s an alarmist twit, but give the Nye guy a break here. He can’t tell the difference between evidence and wishful thinking, but he’s neither ignorant nor stupid.
Deborah Feyerick is obviously out of her depth talking about anything except celebrity gossip, and Nye graciously didn’t mention her stupidity and gallantly tried to disguise her amazing ignorance. You gotta admit, coming up with the meteor-meteorology etymological connection on the spur of the moment wasn’t bad.
I ain’t that gallant. I’d have channelled my inner Ackroyd with a “Deborah, you ignorant…” I also wouldn’t have been invited back.

February 11, 2013 9:39 am

That goofball Nye is one of the biggest proponents of agw. More troublesome is that the loudest agitators in congress in support for the theory are all extreme leftists, like MA congressman Ed Markey.
What does this extreme leftism have to do the science? I’ll tell you: nothing. It just so happens that all the leftist nutballs have got fully on board the agw bandwagon because, as Spike Lee would say, “it’s the right thing to do.” The “science,” and yes, surprise, the climate, has absolutely nothing to do with it. Oh yeah, a couple of supportive quotes for this:
“We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing …” -leftist Senator Tim Wirth, 1993
“No matter if the science of global warming is all phony… climate change provides the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world.” -C. Stewart, Canadian Minister of the Environment
“A global climate treaty must be implemented even if there is no scientific evidence to back the greenhouse effect.” -Richard Benedik, U.N. / U.S. Bureaucrat
… etc
Climate “Science” is a leftist driven thing.
Make that clear. Expose the politics of the agw proponents.
And the media is “stocked” with leftist agw advocates. Educated leftists. Journalists by and large subscribe to the ex-Senator Wirth’s idea. It is “the right thing to do,” they think, to push agw regardless of any scientific validity. Furthermore, they are not going to dig deep (like, for example, read skeptic blogs) into anything that may cause them to question the science.
Our job is two-fold. In the short term, educate the public as best we can on the MSM menace on this issue. Also, start thinking about changing the way students are educated in college. Get down to the roots, or start some kind of penetrating conversations that get the young elites to start thinking differently about agw, and / or other issues.

Han Solo, in A New Hope, brags that the Falcon made the Kessel Run in “less than twelve parsecs”. This is a unit of distance, not time. Oops.
Bill Nye fancies himself as someone who can explain science. So does putting the near collision of this asteroid 2012 DA14 and earth in terms of “time”, “fifteen minutes!”, help to understand how close it came? Not really since it’s ambiguous. Fifteen minutes for which object? The Earth? The asteroid 2012 DA14? Both? Seven and half minutes for both? So instead of making it easier to understand Bill Nye just confuses the issue.
As for whether or not this asteroid has anything to do with Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming, that’s so stupid it burns. The only way this asteroid could possibly affect the climate of Earth is if is smacked into us, and then only briefly would it have an impact on the climate.

So was she taking the p*ss and implying that since every other ‘disaster’ is due to AGW, this must be too? If so, cool.
Or was she pretending to be the dumb blond for entertainment? If so, shame on her.
Or is she genuinely so thick that the question was serious? If so, sack her.

February 11, 2013 9:56 am

Saw the first clip over the weekend – dumb questions coupled with transmission lags do not lead to informative conversations. In a sense I felt sorry for Bill Nye – but only a little bit.
Then I watched the 2nd clip. Frankly, the man is a menace. He confuses people. A depression will always produce nor-easters and sou-westers (plus sou-easters and nor-westers) relative to where the observer and the eye of the depression are. How many NBC viewers understand cyclones and anti-cyclones?
Why scare the beejazus out of people by discussing catastrophic impacts, when he knows (and states) that the asteroid is going to miss? Why the reference to geostationary satellites, thus soliciting the ‘Oh!’ response from the desk-dork whose income depends upon 24/7 coverage?
“Is this caused by global warming”? “No, the asteroid exists far beyond Earth’s atmosphere”.
“Should we be worried”? “No”.
“Nothing to see here – move on”.
I am far from happy with the UK Met Office and the BBC, but I am really glad I am not bombarded with expert opinions suitable for sub-sub average IQ viewers. We’re lucky, we just get the sub-average IQ stuff.

I was referring to the opening line of the post.
“Paul Westhaver writes in Tips and Notes: CNN talking empty head (Feyerick) asks Bill Nye if approaching Meteor was a result of global warming…. but Bill’s response is oddly disquieting.”
His response is to say “no,no” and explain that meteorology and meteors are linked only by a similar name and then moves on. Presumably seeing the blank look on the presenters face.
There’s nothing disquieting and response and this whole post has an undercurrent of implying Bill Nye actually agreed with that comment. He clearly didn’t.

He appears to blame the Coriolis effect on global warming. I doubt that is what he meant, but his whole fame is as a communicator of science, and to make such imprecise or even dubious statements as he did is not good communication at all. That is even without considering whether he is right about CAGW – or the utter dishonesty of the experiment he was involved in to demonstrate the greenhouse effect of CO2, which did nothing of the sort.

That’s not a fair paraphrase of what Bill Nye says.
What he said at 2.12 is:
“….This could be the future everybody, this could be the new normal with all the extra heat energy that’s in the atmosphere, with climate change…”

Too late Eric – the education system is fully indoctrinated in Marxist beliefs. It goes way back and there is almost no way to change it short of scrapping the entire system and terminating the employment of every teacher, principal and education bureaucratic. Here’s an example of training teachers to use Alsinky’s version of the Marxist Delphi Technique for alienating anyone who might pose a threat to the realization of their agenda, marginalizing dissenting parents, and effecting a left-wing take over of the schools.

CNN and Bill Nye would have been better off consulting Wikipedia as it has a good straightforward description and image graphic of the orbit near Earth:
“2012 DA14 is a near-Earth asteroid with an estimated diameter of about 50 meters (160 ft) and an estimated mass of about 180,000 metric tons.[4] It was discovered on February 23, 2012, by the OAM Observatory, La Sagra in Spain (J75)[1] seven days after passing 0.0174 AU (2,600,000 km; 1,620,000 mi) from Earth on February 16.[3] Calculations show that on February 15, 2013, the distance between the asteroid and the center-point of Earth will be 0.000228 AU (34,100 km; 21,200 mi).[3] The asteroid will pass 27,700 km (17,200 mi) from the surface of Earth.[2] The 2013 passage of 2012 DA14 by Earth is a record close approach for a known object of this size.[2]”

The Question asked by the air-head Feyerick: “Is the asteroid, 2012 DA14, coming our way an effect of global warming?” shouldn’t be addressed to “The “Sciency Guy Bill Nye”; the question should be addressed to our good friends Seth D. Baum and Jacob D. Haqq-Misra of Penn State University and Shawn D. Domagal-Goldman of NASA. As you may recall, these gentlemen warned us (Precautionary Principle Memo – ready for transmission Posted on August 30, 2011 by Anthony Watts http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/08/30/precautionary-principle-memo-ready-for-transmission/) about transmitting false statements (especially false statements about global warming) to space lest Ecosystem-Valuing Universalist Extraterrestrial Intelligence (EVUETI) get pissed off and do us harm. Why do I think Baum’s, Haqq-Misra’s and Domagal-Goldman’s answer to the above asteroid question just might be: “The asteroid is a warning shot fired across our bow by EVUETIs. Next time they won’t miss.”

This is sorta-kinda on topic and off – more about the US edjumacation system then Nye’s attempts (if you can call them that) at science.
A couple of days ago the Education Director for New York State was testifying before a congressional committee. In his remarks he used the word “Incentivised”. Used in a sentence it would be “We need teachers to be incentivised.”
With leaders like this, is it any wonder our schools are producing unthinking graduates? I thought I was taught in an authoritarian climate, yet at the proper time (high school I think) a gifted teacher taught the class to question statements by allowing his pronouncements to be questioned. Most were true, but some were balderdash (we couldn’t use the other BS word in class).
Seems these days few learn to question those in authority.

Liberal Skeptic says:
I don’t think it has anything to do with the news or TV. That is just a symptom of a wider problem. All Western Society, but I’m noticing USA in particular has a real problem with anti-intellectualism. It’s considered perfectly acceptable not to have any critical thinking skills and know very little and show very little interest in even basic science.
Greg House says:
Joseph, calling people who have been misled by scientists, press and politicians “stupid” is not right and is counterproductive.

Anti-intellectualism is not really a good proxy for the source of stupidity – it is a result, obviously. It isn’t even about interest in science, as many people are seemingly interested in science but they’re too stupid to detect the fraud of climate change alarm; so again, there must be another actual cause. Part of that cause is the liberal mentality, or at least, the liberal mentality is highly associated with the type of stupidity that leads to belief in climate alarm, or which might have a difficult time distinguishing causes from effects. Greg makes the point about stupidity, and I agree people can’t be blamed for being tricked, up to a point.
They CAN be blamed for choosing to continue to believe in a morally degenerate and pseudoscientific fraud once they’ve been exposed to the truth countless times. They CAN be blamed for supporting policies and holding a philosophy of human life and society which is anti-human and which harms people, and which is debasing in its essence towards human existence. They CAN be blamed for not understanding what it takes to keep them alive, and for supporting policies which would remove the support of their very own lives. They CAN be blamed for supporting population reduction while imagining that because they support this, it won’t apply to them, etc.
And the point about stupidity is also the fact that the news is literally more stupid, as some form of a feedback mechanism as someone suggested. Stupidity is a real thing in the world, it actually exists, and there should be nothing wrong with pointing it out as helpful criticism.
For example, take this conversation with a liberal.
Real person to Liberal: “It is stupid to kill yourself.”
Liberal: “Don’t call me stupid.”
See? There’s no rationality there. They won’t discuss the actual science or the actual logic of killing yourself or holding a philosophy which is antithetical to human progress; they’ll just change the conversation to how it makes them feel. That is: “Even if it is wrong, it is right.” “Yes, but, it isn’t right, it is stupid, and it will kill you.” “Don’t call me stupid.”

Martin Audley- Yes, he is a stupid man. He may have a decent IQ, and a degree but that doesn’t define stupidity, which does not mean lack of intellect.
It’s when someone purposely sticks to a fallacious argument for a reason based upon dogma and self interest for purposes of this discussion. He is taking the side of ignorance when he claims that there is somehow a way for climate to go off the rails and diverge from its cyclic nature. That is stupid or worse, malicious. But in fact, Nye should be hit in the face with a blueberry pie while on TV, that would be entertaining.:]

While I’m thinking about it…can we finally get rid of CNN at our airports?? Broadcasting CNN “news” on TV sets at the gates is just an annoying waste of money and electricity (thank goodness I have an iPod to drown the the inane dribble coming from the CNN “news” personalities…).

“GW will cause storms to spin counter-clockwise in the ‘new normal.’”
That’s not a fair paraphrase of what Bill Nye says.
What he said at 2.12 is:
“….This could be the future everybody, this could be the new normal with all the extra heat energy that’s in the atmosphere, with climate change…”
He’s not a stupid man. We might disagree about whether there is more heat energy in the atmosphere, but he didn’t just suggest that Northern hemisphere storms will reverse direction from now onwards.
———————————————————————————————————————-
I don’t think that was his *intent*, but his answer was so muddle-mouthed that any poorly informed viewer (aka the CNN audience) could easily misinterpret it that way. He jumps from talking about the Coriolis effect and how big the storm was to his ‘new normal’ statement. It seems as if he is describing some new phenomena that wasn’t part of the old normal. Try watching the segment again, but this time with you beer goggles on to simulate what the average CNN viewer would see and hear. 😉

@Wamron – I think you’re thinking of Bill Nighy. Understandable, though, as his name is pronounced identically to the other feller’s. Nighy is rather popular with the ladies, Nye doesn’t seem that popular with anyone, that’s the main difference. 😉

Liberal Skeptic:
His response is to say “no,no” and explain that meteorology and meteors are linked only by a similar name and then moves on. Presumably seeing the blank look on the presenters face.
There’s nothing disquieting and response and this whole post has an undercurrent of implying Bill Nye actually agreed with that comment. He clearly didn’t.
————————————————-
Nye may have been disagreeing with the airhead but I played the video five times and could not detect that. I did not hear the “no,no”. Later she went on to referr to a “meteor” again. I don’t see apparent disagreement. If she said monkeys flew out of her asteroid, Nye would probably agree. It’s all science.

pwl says (February 11, 2013 at 9:41 am): “Han Solo, in A New Hope, brags that the Falcon made the Kessel Run in “less than twelve parsecs”. This is a unit of distance, not time. Oops.”
No, no! A parsec is about 3.26 light years, and as we all know, both light years and dog years are longer than regular years. And of course ridiculous years are longer than light years, and ludicrous years are the longest of all!
“Bill Nye fancies himself as someone who can explain science. So does putting the near collision of this asteroid 2012 DA14 and earth in terms of “time”, “fifteen minutes!”, help to understand how close it came? Not really since it’s ambiguous.”
Exactly. There’s a much better way to put it:

______________
You know, honestly, you almost have to conclude that they’re doing things like this ON PURPOSE, either 1) to make fools of the climate alarm people, hoping people will catch on, or 2) as a gauge to see how stupid people have become and what they’ll accept, a sort of “propaganda effectiveness evaluation”.

Poor Stupid Bill Nye the Science Abusing Guy.
The real answer to Feyerick’s direct question is ” No. There is no relationship between global warming and a meteor approaching earth.” Instead he leaps to a strange linguistics conflation between meteor and meterology after declaring that global warming is “science” on the same footing as Newtonian mechanics. He is so consumed by hype that he can’t allow the hype-mitigating discourse of fact and reason to diminish his fear mongering. He later says to not to be nervous about a 17,000 mile miss, while he advises us to be very nervous of a meteor not yet in evidence. Typical.
That is the most disquieting aspect of this latest episode of Nye’s abuse-of-science-for-hype. It is like his irrational call to action for AGW. He wants us to be afraid of things that don’t exist. He says it at time stamp 1:12. “Get nervous, but not about his one.”
What are we to “Get Nervous” about Bill? A thing that doesn’t exist?
Typical Nye hype.

My theory is that TV does not only make the viewer dumber but also the TV persons themselves; it works in both directions. Probably because the TV people love watching TV themselves, whether their own shows or shows of colleagues.

I guess Bill Nye has credibility among people in my children’s generation, now 30-40 years old, because they grew up with him. I thought he was fine talking about simple scientific principles, but I never saw him as an expert about anything. It’s too bad he has taken on the mantle of AGW defender. He is being used by people who are a lot smarter than he is. He looks a little tragic at this point. I feel sorry for him.
Would it help if he lost the bowtie?

We’re very lucky. If we had just a little more CO2 in the air, we’d have been hit. As you may know, carbon dioxide creates a kind of ‘super gravity’ whenever it gets above 350 ppm concentrations. This super gravity is especially powerful on rocks in vacuums. It’s all very technical. Don’t bother looking it up. Frankly, I’m amazed didn’t hit us.

It hasn’t gone by us yet. Everyone! Hold your breath until Friday!
From http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/home/190248881.html :
Close flyby of asteroid 2012 DA14. This gymnasium-sized asteroid will miss Earth by just 18,000 miles (28,500 km) around 19:25 Universal Time today [Friday]. It will then be as bright as 8th magnitude, moving across the stars by 0.8° per minute — and it will be in nighttime view from easternmost Europe (in late evening) across Asia to Australia (before dawn on the 16th local date).

Q: Who discovered asteroid DA14?
A: “Asteroid 2012 DA14 was discovered by the La Sagra Sky Survey operated by the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca in Spain on Feb. 23, 2012. ”
“The asteroid was about 2.7 million miles (4.3 million kilometers) distant when it was detected.
Their observations were reported to the NASA funded Minor Planet Center, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory for the International Astronomical Union, where all observations from observatories worldwide are combined to maintain the database on all known asteroids and comets in our solar system.”

The truth of this is that Feyerick, the CNN Bimbo in residence and chief Twit asked such a stupid question that Nye had to mumble a nonsequiter just to get out of an embarrassing moment. Westerhaven should have been looking more carefully at what was actually happening instead of misleading all of us about what Nye meant. We must realize that the news readers are morons, just on screen ‘talent’. Most of them couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

Tough day to be Bill Nye……His shame should be pretty unbearable now.
Before his Near-Miss…doomsday prediction and after which he advises we should get nervous, out of the blue … bam…. a meteorite whacks Russia. 1000 people get hurt….and Bill never saw it coming… nobody did. We were too busy watching the Bill’s red-herring in the wrong direction. Seems fitting. Doom-Sayers….. looking the wrong way.
Was I nervous? No, absolutely not! Poor Bill the Science abuser would have been under a chair wringing his hands had he knew the unknowable.
Bill needs Prozac.
Incidentally, that Russian meteorite did more damage than the myth of AGW ever did.
