Doha delegates, pwned

Would you wear a mask to prevent CO2 exhalation? Surprisingly, many said yes.

Guest post by Paul Driessen

With the climate talks in Doha, Qatar limping along, and support for a new treaty waning among nations in attendance, one might expect spirits to be down among the global warming faithful. But this is not the case.

Yes, nations like Canada, New Zealand, and Japan seem eager to withdraw from the process. And yes, nature has not been exactly cooperative, with 16 years of no statistically significant warming. However, delegates here at COP 18 remain steadfast in their cause and willing to do almost anything it takes to “save the earth.”

CFACT highlighted this eagerness to go to extremes by introducing a new gadget called the “sequestration of exhalation device” — a mask that would filter CO2 from a person’s breath. Conference delegates were asked if they would wear such a mask if it would filter out all the CO2 they exhale. Surprisingly, many said yes.

Here’s a video of the interviews and responses:

Of course the mask really did no such thing, but those questioned were unaware that the proposition being made was done in sport. A few actually said they would have their children wear the mask, even going as far as to say their pets could wear a filtration mask too.

Among those trying the mask were members of the IPCC and World Meteorological Organization — two of the leading scientific bodies supporting global warming investigations. Although they were unwilling to use the mask themselves, they did entertain its usefulness and give their input on the notion.

If COP 18 attendees are willing to consent to wearing an invasive mask, just how far are they willing to cajole, push, or coerce the rest of the world to take action? Stay tuned: Visit www.CFACT.org for updates on COP18.

What a scream! At least it is clear where they are coming from.

December 4, 2012 2:11 pm

,
Who is being made a fool of?
Not only is the capture of CO2 totally insignificant, but the manufacture of the mask, replacement materials, and shipping create many times more CO2 than they can hope to capture. To top it off, the usage might create a hazardous waste disposal issue — it is probably classified as a biohazard after being worn a while. I mean, would you share a used mask?
The only part of the story that needs verification is that there are some people attending Doha that actually entertained the idea for longer than a split second. If there are, my hat’s off to CFACT for an inspired bit of farce. I hope they took names.

Not sure how you see it as CFACT making fools of themselves…looks to me like they made fools of the COP 18 delegates…therefore COP was ‘pwnd’.

The mask is a daft idea for several reasons and those attending the COP could be expected to have sufficient knowledge to understand that. But CFACT demonstrated that some of them don’t.
The delegates made “fools of themselves” and there is no way that CFACT did.
Importantly, as the article concludes

If COP 18 attendees are willing to consent to wearing an invasive mask, just how far are they willing to cajole, push, or coerce the rest of the world to take action?

Humorous spoofs like this must inject a little levity into the lives of the attendants of dreary gatherings like this one at Doha. They must be very depressed in Doha looking at the static temperatures and the accelerating rise of CO2 levels making all the plants grow better and faster to feed the poor,

In the early days of mad cow disease in the uk one minister had his children eat a beef burger on TV only to later find that mad cow disease presented a real threat. In this case of course the opposite would be true. I would imagine that the delegates will be sequestering plenty enough carbon as they dash to the canteen between long periods of sitting down.

Minutes later, when they swoon, tell em

It just goes to show just because people want to control what the other guy does, thinks, or says,
doesn’t mean they’re going to limit themself to the same constraints.
Their fellow man is there to degrade, blame, and ultimately use.
If you want to breathe, pay me.
What’s the next step? Humiliation for not going along.
“If you want to be critical of the gas do it wearing this gas mask.”
” Now how do you feel? You feel absolutely silly, don’t you? Complaining about this mask when it’s agreed all around, this gas has wondrous properties. It’s a pollutant and it doesn’t matter if no one has ever found anything it polluted, you’re a silly and a selfish person for ruining the dialog, complaining behind your mask that CO2 isn’t really a pollutant.”
Next step?
Want to have a child? Pay the government in advance for the years 0-18, for carbon pollution.

But there is the answer right there. They will say such measures make sense, they are a good idea, they’ll even say they are willing to accept such measures themselves. But when it comes to actually doing it, 24/7/365.25, they don’t want to. But they do like to buy carbon credits and claim they are sacrificing just as much.
And if you can’t afford or obtain your own carbon credits, or are in a poor country with a kleptocratic government that has stolen your right to pursue prosperity in return for foreign payoffs for carbon austerity, here’s your mask. It really doesn’t change much, as to those in power you were faceless anyway.

Actually there is some merit in this idea. What they would not be willing to do is admit that they’ve been suckered–and that their efforts have harmed the living world.
Every living thing on Earth traces its origins to the biochemical reduction (removal of oxygen) of CO2. Attacking CO2 is attacking the basis of life.
We are slowly reaching the general public, with the help of 16 years of non-warming. And that brings up the subject of graphs: just about everyone on Earth over 6 or 7 has seen Michael Mann’s discredited hockey stick. WUWT published a graph around a year ago that is far more impressive to those with mathematical understanding. It was a graph of average global temperatures versus number of weather stations. In the 1980’s, the “least reliable” temperature stations were removed from the records. Temperatures rose at exactly the same points. Somehow, the deleted stations were always the coldest ones.
I described that to a health professional, college degree. She could not understand what would happen to the average if you removed all the lowest points. I told her the average would rise. But while most of the public does not understand this easily, al large percentage DO understand, and would explain what this means to their neighbors.
People WORKED to make Mann’s graph the cultural icon it became. WUWT should republish that graph at least once a week, and make it very easy to find.
The real sources of global warming are twofold: (1) the urban heat island, including increasing use of air conditioners and other warming devices, and (2) manipulation of the data as shown unambiguously in your graph.
Perhaps you are afraid to do so. Our people frequently talk of their belief that the real reason for the global warming hoax is social control or financial (Gore heavily invested in carbon credits as one example). That graph strongly points to “conspiracy” of a small group of people able to sell nonsense to the entire world. Wide publication of that graph would tend to expose them, and those are very, very powerful people, who have been know to commit murder to protect themselves.
Every living thing depends on carbon dioxide for its well-being. I have been tempted to sell home carbon dioxide removal device to alarmists. But it would be attempted murder–as a physiologist, I know that carbon dioxide levels are low and not high, and that lower levels would shorten life while higher levels raise longevity. We are talking plant growth to feed people–and all endangered species. We are talking return to geologically more typical CO2 levels, which must logically benefit more species than would be harmed.
Health, wealth, vitality, longevity, material abundance. Are those things worth taking any risk for?

This kind of mindset reminds me of the argument that we should all stop exercising, because we produce more CO2 when we exert ourselves.
Doha should pass some sort of motion to ban exercise. Imagine how much mankind could lower our CO2 emissions if we stopped exhaling. (Yes! I’m being sarcastic.)

The nice way of looking at this, and one which has been legitimized in social studies, is that “good” citizens will give the benefit of the doubt to others in the community, and will support them should they appear impassioned (and there are no obvious dangerous elements involved). Someone wants you to donate for research on demystification of the lower eleum (a terrible disease!), we give ’em five bucks and wish him luck.
The not-so-nice – because it is both scary and relevant – way of looking at this, is that the warmist committed is exactly the sort to get behind someone’s programme simply because the person is impassioned and there are no obvious dangers to going-with-the-flow. De-mystification of the lower eleum or decarbonization of the world: if it is a popular excitement, then there they are. Which is NOT the sort we need determining our technological, economic or political realities.
(But I am open to donations for the demystification cause from the COP18 attendees.)

The absurdity is mind boggling. If there is over two pounds of CO2 exhaled, then the mask will get a lot heavier over the day (from 2/3 pound to 2pound depending on the chemical reaction). Realistically, you need at least as much material as the weight of gas, so the mask would probably weigh quite a few pounds to start. Of course carrying that weight of mask would itself increase the CO2 output leading to runaway CO2 induced heating. That it turn would lead to hydrological effects (thirst) requiring water to be carried, leading to a water vapour feedback mechanism induced thermal runaway as more and more CO2 is produced.
It’s an end of the world scenario!

Such a mask could only work by means a chemical reaction capturing the CO2. Which would require a chemical process to manufacture such a compound, requiring energy and releasing CO2. Thus a net carbon capture face mask isn’t possible (although potentially a biological one could be). What surprises me, is none of the people seem to realize this.

I don’t think that anthropogenic CO2 has an effect on climate that is worth getting excited about, but I do see a tremendous economic potential in the carbon dioxide filter mask economically. Masks could be designed and constructed for all of earth’s CO2 expelling creatures. Just consider the number of individuals to be employed designing these masks, building the masks, and those trained to actually fit the masks on all of earth’s creatures. Then consider the trillions of tiny masks needed for bacteria. Need I say more? Surely this is the answer to our planet’s economic doldrums.

so are my pets, and so are my family—to feed the vegetables so they can feed

From the article:
“If COP 18 attendees are willing to consent to wearing an invasive mask, just how far are they willing to cajole, push, or coerce the rest of the world to take action?”
They really don’t care about ‘the rest of the world’. Their unspoken agenda is to hobble the United States. They zip their lips when it comes to China, India, and “the rest of the world“.

I understand 97% of the concensus agreed to wear the mask. One very positive way to sequester carbon is to promote population growth – we do take a lot of carbon out of the system for decades – apparently we mix it with dihydrogen oxide.

DOG BITES MAN!
These people are True Believers and they have traveled thousands of miles to attend a church meeting full of True Believers. Could we realistically expect them to NOT act like True Believers? Could we realistically expect them to have their guards up?
Mild amusement aside, this should be a lesson to “our side” to guard against our own forms of True Belief lest we too should get lazy and succumb to smug tribalism.

Interesting to see on the Doha conference website http://unfccc.int/meetings/doha_nov_2012/meeting/6815.php
that they have been meeting since Monday Nov 26 with hundreds of meetings, but when you click on reports or decisions all that is reported is that information will be available shortly.
The latest negotiation update says: “Upon completion of the mandate given to them by the COM/CMP President following the closure of the Subsidiary Bodies on Saturday, 1 December, the SBI and SBSTA Chairs requested a final extension till noon on Wednesday, 5 December 2012, to advance the remaining items. They also indicated that some issues which are of a political nature may require ministerial engagement to take them forward. The President granted the requested extension and will review the need for ministerial engagement depending on the status of items at noon on Wednesday, 5 December 2012.”
They have until Friday to wrap up this talkfest, but nowhere can I find a clear explanation of the expected outcomes. The original 1992 UN framework Convention on Climate Change listed on the website states as its objective:
“The ultimate objective of this Convention and any related legal instruments that the
Conference of the Parties may adopt is to achieve, in accordance with the relevant provisions of
the Convention, stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that
would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. Such a level
should be achieved within a time frame sufficient to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally to
climate change, to ensure that food production is not threatened and to enable economic
development to proceed in a sustainable manner.”
So the party has been going on for 20 years, and what positive outcomes have been achieved?
Will they take credit for the fact that warming appears to have stopped?

First off – big props to the young woman capable of displaying the type of earnestness necessary to help save the world! What was that line in the recent mess “Prometheus”? Big things come from small beginnings.”
Secondly, I don’t know if there is a skeptic gene missing or it’s just selective editing but didn’t any of these delegates stop to think of the practicality of such a measure? Or is it because one finds him or herself in a setting and on camera and thus would not wish to be viewed as skeptical or worse obstructionist? I guess none of them has worked in a situation where a gas mask is required to protect their circulatory system from the outside conditions and not the reverse. Yes, there may be day when masks are necessary (see China) in our respective countries but most assuredly due to pollutants other than a suspiciously high fatal concentration of CO2. And that’s the point – there’s little honest effort to allow for skepticism, an examination of the forest through the trees. The strained acceptance of incorporating even a couple of hours per day of the “sequestration mask” to help the cause is an analogy for keeping the genie (i.e., industrial revolution of third world nations) in the bottle (ooops…another analogy) by issuing non-realistic agreements like the Kyoto Protocol or carbon credits – not everybody is going to hold their end of the bargain. While participating in another blog I was labeled as a “do nothing obstructionist”; on the contrary I am for action, good science, adaptation, and productive and sound policies. The status quo will indeed not allow us to continue as we have always done so. But for accuracy and efficiency’s sake, do question and demand conclusions based on sound empirical data before donning a make-believe mask that allows you to feel better about yourself.

Wonderful video by CFACT. I wonder how many people could be sold on using the advanced recycling version, where the toxic pollutant CO₂ is extracted from the exhaled air then the remaining purified air is stored in a small reservoir where it’s the source of all inhaled air.
It’s a very efficient unit, within a half hour so much CO₂ has been extracted that the concentration in the system is barely detectable.

But if they knew that they’re each exhaling a ballpark figure of CO2 at about 40,000 ppm with each breath, would the amount of CO2 “pollution” trapped so close to their faces only frighten the bejesus out of them, sadly making the masks not marketable, or would they finally decide to do the right thing and just end it all in order to “save the planet”? As someone who used to have to wear a respirator in much of my working day due to being in hazardous environments, this got me thinking.
let’s for the sake of argument take this idea at face value ( I noticed some posters agreeing it could be a good idea, not judged the irony in those posts)
I thought that surely there are no cartridge filters that do this and I was right, the filters are designed to keep out particulates, vapours, noxious acid gases etcetera. it would be ridiculous to make a cartridge co2 scrubber as respirators are designed to stop things entering your lungs, not getting out of them. Taking aside how uncomfortable these things are to wear for long periods of time and how much water vapour they collect (not to mention quite a stink after a while) I did consider that there might be applications for such a device. this led me to think of enclosed spaces and sure enough I found a device which is for use in commercial diving bells . A snip at $500 on sale.
http://www.amronintl.com/comex-lung-powered-carbon-dioxide-co2-scrubber.html
The device would have to be fitted with an active carbon scrubber for biologicals and a couple of pounds of soda lime or soda sorb to capture most of the CO2. The comfort and water vapour issues remain.
This device is good for 4 hours at which point the active ingredients are saturated and need to be replaced. Leaving you with a couple of pounds of co2 saturated waste to deal with. And that’s not even considering the amount of co2 released in the manufacture of the unit and the component parts plus active scrubbing ingredients.
And that’s as close as you get to the device being pranked in this video. 4 hours co2 removal for great expense and creating co2 saturated waste products. Imagine each person creating around 12 pounds of harmful chemical waste a day?
There are other methods of carbon scrubbing such as those used in coal-fired power plants but none are practicable in small scale personal use due to the nature of the process requiring high temperatures or other chemical related processes. many of these require lithium and then we have the whole argument about the environmental costs of getting that little beauty out of the salts.
So for those who said ‘wait a minute….maybe…?” ( and i know there are some ) Please don’t bother. Apart from the fact that the effects would be negligible and immeasurable the whole thing would never be practicable.

Luther Wu

If the population of the US could suddenly be reduced by half to a more sustainable level, then the goal of halting Catastrophic Global Climate Disruption could almost be reached overnight by halting the release of over 70 Megatons of CO2 annually, just from breathing.
The same population reduction techniques could then be applied throughout the Western industrialized world until the noble goal of sustainability and bliss could be achieved for mankind forever.
