Just a concern about collecting state sales taxes. You are required to have a state sales tax certificate to legally collect and remit state sales tax. My concern is not about paying the tax but rather that you may be putting yourself in serious hot water if you have not obtained the proper certificates for all states and do not remit the taxes collected to each state as required. I do not believe your are required to collect out of state sales tax on internet items, being only liable for collecting state sales tax for purchases originating within the state you are shipping from.

Anyway, the States and local taxing districts are going to solve this very soon because they are NOT getting substantial amounts of money they believe they are legally entitled to. See Quill Corp. v. North Dakota for the history of this issue. After 1994 (Amazon.com) this problem grew slowly for awhile and, more recently, took the shape of a hockey stick and is beginning to hurt local tax receipts. Expect it to get solved in 2013.

Here in Pennsylvania they’ve theoretically always had their solution, as the full item is called the Sales and Use and Hotel Occupancy Tax. If you buy something from an out-of-state business or internet vendor that you should be paying PA sales tax on but that seller isn’t collecting it, as an honest taxpayer you are expected to collect it from yourself and dutifully send it off to Harrisburg. From the Department of Revenue’s Use Tax page:
From an enforcement standpoint, when the Department of Revenue receives information on purchases where use tax is owed but was not paid, it will assess the purchaser for not only the tax, but also penalty and interest for late payment.
With millions of scofflaws violating the law perhaps hundreds of times a year, enforcement is challenging. Presumably other states with sales taxes have similar laws on their books, from your link I found out Washington has Use tax, most likely all are equally effective.
I suspect the planned Big Solution around 2013 or whenever will involve big internet companies from Amazon to eBay having to surrender all transaction records to a federal database accessible by the state and local Revenue offices, citing the interstate commerce clause and threatening those companies with prosecution for facilitating criminal enterprises (avoiding sales taxes). If Congress won’t do it because it’ll hurt struggling families and individuals, Barry will mandate it because it’s only asking big rich companies to pay their fair share, even though companies are well aware of Use taxes and already comply by default.
Then hundreds of millions of Americans will be dreading the expected notices by mail and phone.
BTW, I just noticed a cute quirk of the Washington law:
Goods are purchased in another state that does not have a sales tax or a state with a sales tax lower than Washington’s. For example, items you purchase in Oregon that are used in Washington are subject to use tax.
So if a Washington resident on vacation buys a trinket in PA and pays the 6% sales tax, and brings it back to Washington, if the sales tax rate in Washington is higher then they have to pay Washington as well?

Ok, but the sales tax showing on my order is incorrect. Sarasota County Florida sales tax is 7% not 8.25% as shown on the PayPal invoice.
What about us in Australia? How can we get a copy.

It has been reported in WUWT “Tips & Notes”, and what is notable about it is the rate at which the melting ice caps are contributing to sea level rise – 11mm in 20 years is equivalent to just over two inches per century.

You anti-tax folks really need to think about consequences. If you starve the states of revenue, you’re GUARANTEEING that the Feds will take over even more functions from the states. Most states are fairly competent and fairly responsive to the people. When any task passes into Fed hands, it immediately becomes incompetent and unresponsive.
I got the quantity issue fixed, strange how the merchant doesn’t make that obvious. It was deeply buried option. Thanks Josh for the help!

The states aren’t the ones initiating the fight to tax sales from the internet. It is the owners of companies who have physical store locations. They feel that they are losing customers as more and more people find shopping on the internet saves them money by not having to pay sales tax. Keep in mind that the SELLER is responsible for paying the sales tax, and only through tradition are they able to get away with passing that tax along to the buyer. It is amazing to me that sellers can pass onto the buyer a tax that the seller is required to pay and then be allowed to keep a percentage of the tax due as payment for collecting it from the buyer. (For big retailers this can be quite a large amount of money.)

I attempted to buy a calendar, but PayPal wouldn’t take my credit card. Following is what I sent them as query/bitch about their operation.
“There is no way I would EVER recommend PayPal to ANYONE, including my worst enemy !
I attempted to use my US Bank Mastercard to purchase a 2013 calendar from the WUWT site. I do not have a PayPal account, and so used the “guest” payment option. At the end, you rejected my credit card (no reason, just “cannot be used.”) This is the second time in 3 months PayPal has rejected the card (previously with PalmDr.com). This card is fully functional in ANY store that accepts Mastercard and on other online sites (most recently 20 Nov 2012 with Victor Machinery Exchange, Brooklyn, NY.). This smacks of a scheme to force EVERYONE to open a PayPal account or not do business with vendors. I wonder of your vendors understand they are loosing customers ? A copy of this is being sent to the vendor I attempted to buy from.”
