Al Gore's 'Reality Drop' is a bomb – so let's give him a 'hockey stick'

UPDATE: Hockey stick achieved, see below.

Guess what? WUWT readers make up the majority of viewers of this farce video. Mostly curiosity I suppose. Watch the video, then see the numbers below.

Yesterday, Tom Nelson asked this question, and it got me to digging.

It’s now been two weeks: Does anybody know what happened to Al Gore’s “Reality Drop” campaign?

“Reality Drop” Brings Social Gaming (And Facts) To Dispelling Climate Change Misinformation

Looking for an innovative way to dispel myths and spread science about climate change, Gore, Fox and their colleagues at The Climate Reality Project turned to agency Arnold Worldwide. Pete Favat, Arnold Worldwide’s chief creative officer, had attracted Gore’s attention because of his cause-related work for the Truth Campaign, the hugely successful national anti-tobacco program.

The product, “Reality Drop,” relies on sophisticated algorithms to highlight “hot” climate change stories and provide simple rebuttals to the most common climate change myths.

Users win points for sharing facts and eventually climb up the ranks of the game and earn Foursquare-like badges such as “Carbon Crusher,” “Shining Beacon,” and “Order of the Green Circle.”

Initial information on the game will be officially unveiled on November 14th during “24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report,” a 24-hour event broadcast live on the Internet, culminating in a presentation by Gore on November 15th at 7 p.m. EST.

Without any advertising budget, Reality Drop will rely strictly on word-of-mouth to gain traction and influence the climate change discussion. “Success will be measured by the amount of people who are posting and the number of people involved,” says Favat. “People inherently want to be on the right side here.”

Reality Drop (RealityDrop) on Twitter

[Seven total tweets, none since Nov. 15]

Here’s the Twitter page, captured on 11/30/2012, showing all 7 Tweets

Reality_Drop_twitter

Now here comes the fun part, the “stats” section of the Vimeo video page for the propaganda movie at the top shows this:

RealityDrop_video_stats1

Wow, 155 views in a week, and trending down, down, down. Some might call that interest “cooling”. When you click on the “Top URL embeds” (highlighted in yellow) you get this fun table showing that WUWT is the main external contributor to views of Al Gore’s ‘Reality Drop’ video. Heh.

RealityDrop_video_stats2

What is really interesting is the comparison to the top “loads” leader, which has only 6 views compared to WUWT’s 999. More people from WUWT viewed Al’s video than anywhere else in the world. That’s gotta sting.

So what should we do to help Al get more views?

Well obviously WUWT’ers need to help. Simply click on the video “play” button above, and we’ll give him a hockey stick graph for views. If you have a website/Twitter feed/Facebook page, direct people here and ask them to help. To register a view from WUWT, you simply need to play the video above in the open WUWT browser window. It’s just that easy to give Al a hockey stick of traffic from those he seeks to destroy. I’ll post an update when the success is robust, er, graphically clear.

In the meantime, you might want to take this survey Al has prepared to help gauge the success of his video. I’m sure he’d love to hear your opinion!

==============================================================

UPDATE: We’ve presented a hockeystick, and WUWT is well in the lead. Thanks everybody!

Stonyground says:
I see the big oil and big coal lie is being trotted out again.
One thing that we can be happy about. The fine efforts of Anthony Watts, Andrew Montford, Steve McIntyre and the rest are important, but all we really have to do is wait the alarmists out. The longer their predictions fail to come true, the less credibility they will have. Their shift from soaring temperatures and rapidly rising sea levels to extreme weather events is highly significant. How stupid do you look when you try to claim that when you were predicting droughts you really meant floods?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Standard_Atmosphere = 15 deg F
Wikipedia can’t seem to figure out what a standard day temp is. Interesting, the US and ICAO Standard is what is used to calculate atmosphere dependent activities, e.g. aviation.
Pssl – Standard day ambient pressure at sea level, 2116.22 lb/ft 2
Tssl – Standard day temperature at sea level, 288.15 °K (15 °C), 518.67 °R (59 °F)
rssl – Standard day density at sea level, 0.023769 slugs/ft3
Looks like wikipedia is showing a 1 deg F cooling since the 1950’s, that way anything warmer is CAGW???

Q: How would you describe this site to someone who has never heard of it?
A: a nest of anti-human climate alarmists, with a defiant socialist overtones seeking to stifle legitimate scientific debate through social manipulation via astroturffing and shilling internet blog sites.
This is actually a good idea, all people would have to do is download a list if their preferred talking-point answers, compile a list of refuting answers , we could then just do a Google search of their shill answers already sorted by the Google ranking algorithms, no pun intended, and post where the refutations will do the most good.

Looking for an innovative way to dispel myths and spread science about climate change, Gore, Fox and their colleagues at The Climate Reality Project turned to agency Arnold Worldwide.

Good idea! Let’s start with Gore’s blockbuster – ‘Inconvenient Truth’.

An Inconvenient Truth, was yesterday criticised by a high court judge who highlighted what he said were “nine scientific errors” in the film.

My, my, the more things change the more they stay the same. Substitute the “capitalist” with the “socialist” and what have you got? – The same glove on the other hand. I guess we are now the “revolutionaries”. Long live the revolution. (Apologies if it’s a bit long or OT)
“This capitalist framework leads corporate media to misrepresent reality and create a completely alternate ideology that is inverted from the reality it supposedly represents. This capitalist ideology ‘is the expression of dominant class interests’ (Fuchs 2009: 390). Corporate media do not re-present information that is in the best interest of the masses. Rather, those ‘who lack the means of mental production’ (Marx & Engels MECW: 59) are subject to the ‘ideas of the ruling class’ (Marx & Engels MECW: 59). These forms of domination are ‘naturalized by the media and are portrayed as being unchangeable’ (Fuchs 2009: 391). In explaining his theory of hegemony, Gramsci argued that the masses agree to this domination by ‘refusing to resist, by hoping to gain advantages by supporting domination, or by not seeing through the presented lies so that, as a result, they consent to their own oppression’ (Fuchs 2009: 391).
Independent media – particularly online media – have the possibility to subvert the corporate interests of capitalistic media (McChesney 2007). An alternative press, as conceptualized by Marx, serves as a ‘public watchdog, the tireless denouncer of those in power’ (Marx & Engels MEW: 231). However, such an investigative and antagonistic alternative media are only possible outside the parameters of profiteering. Egalitarian relationships, both within-media and between-media users, can unite individuals through common cause. Individuals and groups can ‘centralise the numerous local struggles, all of the same character, into one national struggle’ (Marx & Engels MECW: 493). The decentralized network of information exchange through the Internet poses a unique opportunity to circumvent mainstream, capitalistic media and realize the theory of a democratic, participatory medium, first put forth by Marx and Engles 150 years ago.”

There’s something even more curious about those stats. They got 11,600 hits from some site called arnworldsplash.arn.com but… only 6 loads. Six? 11,600 people clicked through to the site, but only SIX watched the video? SIX?
So…. I tried to visit the site, and got this message:
“The Web server you are attempting to reach has a list of IP addresses that are not allowed to access the Web site, and the IP address of your browsing computer is on this list.”
Seriously? I’m on their blacklist? They know who I am? Right.
So, off to a different computer on a completely different ISP. Same message. Wow.
Anyone in a betting mood? Here’s my bet. There is no “black list” there is only a white list for specific computers that are allowed on the site. No way there’s thousands of them, that would be impractical. More likely there are only a few of them, and they are running bots.
arnworldsplash.arn.com is a dummy site which has only one purpose. It exists for bots to hit it and from there link to the Reality Drop site, driving up that site’s traffic numbers. Whoever did the initial testing probably clicked the video link just to make sure the whole food chain was working right. The bots don’t do that part, so…. no more views of the video.

What is that evil new type of software out there for generating and controlling bogus online personae? – “Persona management software” – that’s it isn’t it? It took me precisely 1:21 seconds into the video to figure out that is EXACTLY what Reality Drop actually is: social management software designed to transform the participant into a ‘bot’ designed to “flood online comment streams” with information that they aggregate, filter, and supply to the participant. Evil.
Maybe Algore’s problem is that people are smart enough to figure this out and don’t appreciate being made into tools – even if they DO happen to support his position. Either that or Reality Drop is the dumbest ‘game’ idea ever invented. Who really wants to be a “carbon crusher” or be an initiate into the “order of the green circle”? an eight year old???

I see a general pattern here. “Truth” has become a dirty word. Almost every weekend I have to answer the door to a couple characters (different each time) who attempt to hand me their church’s pamphlets and insist I must know “the truth”. I tell them I’ll buy everything except truth.
So when I see somebody “spread truth” right in the opening, I know I can’t be bothered to look further. Isn’t that neat?

I am afraid it is not that easy. The reason for the BIG CAGW LIE is to come up with a way to give the United Nations the RIGHT to directly tax the citizens of the world. The second reason is to provide a crisis that can not be handled on the national level. To provide “legitimacy” for a global government.
“Global governance requires localising global issues”
From Carroll Quigley to the UN Millennium Summit
The fact that the director-general of the World Trade Organization is talking about implementing a system of global government similar to the EU openly and is targeting national sovereignty, scares the heck out of me.
Director-General Pascal Lamy, in his address to the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry in Tokyo on 12 October 201: I see this as the contemporary form of multilateralism with notions of sovereignty being challenged by realities of interdependence.

I was wondering how the windmills fared, the media has been strangely silent. I know the rotors can be locked during high winds, the blades turned for minimal profile. On the large very expensive models, not so much on the backyard versions. But since Sandy wasn’t a hurricane when it made landfall, it really wasn’t much of a test.
Oh well, guess it’s a good thing that during a high wind event like Sandy, no one needed electricity from the windmills while gathering supplies and hunkering down or evacuating, especially from the backyard ones after the power lines were downed, nor has any electricity from those been needed in the weeks of waiting for the utilities to get their electricity hooked up again. Nothing but bright rainbows and rose-scented unicorn farts for that entire swath of the country, everyone is doing fine.

I thought it was 1936 that was the hottest year in the US.

I can’t believe they’re not in there hiding that decline! I’m sure Al can turn those statistics into millions of support.
Now how about this for a fun game: You are juggling the myths and religion of climate change. All the while real data and all sorts of observations are flying at you that are about to crush your myth. You have to think quick on your feet, hide the decline, manipulate the data, run smear campaigns, etc. to keep your religion alive.

“Looking for an innovative way to dispel myths and spread science about climate change”
Since they are doing what is akin to proving the earth is flat and the whole universe revolves around it, they really do need innovation to keep the scam alive.
Now if AGW wasn’t a total scam, science alone would be enough. It always has been.

Hey! Arnold Worldwide! If you’re going to be so brazen as to set up bots to make your customers think that they’re getting lots of traffic, you ought to program the stupid critters to actually watch the video too. How stupid do you think you’re customers are?
Or were you paid by your client to create the fictitious traffic and your client was too stupid to ask for the pretend visitors to pretend to watch the video? Maybe you guys charge extra for that and they didn’t have enough money?
Really Arnold Worldwide, you’ve got some high profile customers like Volvo and Progressive. Do you think itz such a good idea for it to be so easily seen that you seem to be manipulating site stats? You’d think that would be pretty easy for any competent internet marketing company to pull off. Hey! Unless you delete browsing history – then you get a second chance to use words like ‘obscene’, ‘scandalous’, ‘totalitarian’ and ‘Uzbekistani standards’.
Apologies to any Uzbeks reading this – UK political standards are – shall we say – not anything to get proud about – MPs fiddling expenses – and Mr Speaker [of restricted elevation] Bercow seemingly allowing – if not encouraging – the tax-payer being ripped-off, baying for a state controled press – to prevent revelations of the tax-payer being ripped off- and a resolute refusal to notice a deficit that, this year, will represent two thousand pounds of government borrowing – and spending [=wasting?] -for every man. woman and child in the country.
Which we will have to repay. With interest.

Editor
November 30, 2012 2:50 pm

The survey at the site asks:

10. When you used the site, what were the biggest barriers between you and a painless user experience?

To which I responded …

A “painless user experience”? This is supposed to be a GAME. Gamers don’t do “painless”. If I wanted “painless”, I’d take out all my organs and suspend them in a bath of warm nutrient medium. I want “exciting” and “addictive” and “uncertain” and “interesting” and “intriguing” and “unpredictable”. Instead, you give me painless, and then emphasize the mistake by asking things like your Question #9 above.
In Question 9 you ask if the text is too short, too long, or just right … whereas my answer is that the text is so often meaninglessly vague, and usually so scientifically incorrect, that in general the length of the text merely highlights the difference between a half pound of garbage and two pounds of garbage.
I didn’t see that option on the choices for Question #9.

I was gonna let the authors of the poll know what I was really thinking, but I decided to go easy on them, it’s clear that they came to the climate party on the short bus, so we need to cut them some slack …

Arnold Worldwide from WIKI

Arnold Worldwide is an advertising agency headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The agency has 16 offices in 15 countries, including Amsterdam, Boston, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, Milan, New York, Prague, São Paulo,[2] Shanghai, Sydney, Toronto and Washington DC.[3] The agency is part of Havas, a global advertising holding company based in France.[4]
rnold Rosoff founded Arnold Worldwide, formerly Arnold & Co. and Arnold Communications, in 1946. Rosoff continued to serve as Chairman until his retirement in 1986. Upon retirement, Rosoff sold the agency to his employees. Ed Eskandarian acquired the agency in 1990. In 1995, Eskandarian, a former partial-owner of the Boston Red Sox,[5] sold Arnold to Snyder Communications. Havas acquired Snyder Communications in 2000.[6]
Advertising Age ranked Arnold as the 19th largest American agency in 2005 with revenues of $114m.[7]
After struggling to gain accounts earlier in the year, Arnold Worldwide won the Panasonic account at the end of 2009.[10] The agency hired Andrew Benett as CEO in February 2010[11] and had won eighteen new client accounts by the end of the year, earning them the “2010 Comeback Agency of the Year” title from Ad Age.[12] In 2011, Ad Age chose Arnold as one of 10 agencies to be included on its annual Agency A-List. The Delaney Report, an industry newsletter, declared Arnold Worldwide “Best Ad Agency in the Nation” for the third quarter of 2010 as a result of their “strong new business track record.”….

I wonder how much of that “Best Ad Agency in the Nation” and their “strong new business track record.” is built on bot attack counting? Snicker

I’m not sure which would be worse. The ad agency flim flamming their customers, or the agency getting caught flim flamming the public on behalf of their customers? Not that ad agencies don’t flim flam the public as a matter of course, but getting caught red handed is another matter.
There’s a car ad running right now with words to the effect of “go anywhere versatility, all season capability”. OK, that’s flim flam because it is meaningless. “97% of expert climate scientists agree that climate change is happening now and that humans are largely to blame. It turns out that very few of the 31,000+ people who signed the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine’s petition are climate experts. The signatories include only 9,029 scientists with Ph.D.s and only 39 who were trained specifically in climatology. The list includes veterinarians and more than 2,000 electrical engineers. That’s a little like asking a plumber to assess repair plans for your leaky roof.”

“Will climatedialogue.org (and WUWT and all web media concerning climate) have filters to tackle the new Al Gore funded propaganda/spam platform?
See http://realitydrop.org/about
“Spread truth, destroy denial” is their logo and it’s presented as a tool which constantly aggregates all climate websites and blogs for members, presents them with a pre-written text to counter any information detected that’s anti-AGW, and awards points if they copy and paste it into blogs or other social media.
Examples … http://realitydrop.org/myths

Data are plural.
==============
Fwiw – From a US Dictionary source Version 2.1.3 (80.4):
data |ˈdatə; ˈdātə|
noun [treated as sing. or pl. ]
facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.
USAGE Data was originally the plural of the Latin word : datum, ‘something (e.g., a piece of information) given.’
Data is now used as a singular where it means ‘information’: : this data was prepared for the conference.
It is used as a plural in technical contexts and when the collection of bits of information is stressed: : all recent data on hurricanes are being compared. Avoid : datas and : datae, which are false plurals, neither English nor Latin.

Where did all those 16 million viewers go?
____________________________________________
They are not needed any more. The 16 million viewers will have already been reported as the “Overwhelming popular concern about CAGW” at the Doha Climate Change Conference.
It is all Blue Smoke and Mirrors.
#1. False crisis is manufactured
#2. All out Media propaganda blitz
#3. Rigged ‘Polls’ showing ‘public concern’
#4. Politicians responding to the ‘public concern’ with new laws written by corporate/banker lobbyists.
Some how the new laws always generate lots of $$$ for the politically connected and often make matters worse. The individual thinks to himself that he is the only one who was opposed to the law and shrill Politically Correct activists make sure any dissenters are humiliated and shunned.
The only difference this time is WUWT and the rest of the skeptic blogs where the dissenters find they are not quite the minority they thought they were.

Rochester Business Journal November 30, 2012
Nearly two-thirds of respondents to this week’s RBJ Daily Report Snap Poll are concerned about climate change, which has been the focus of much discussion since Superstorm Sandy.
http://www.rbj.net/article.asp?aID=193305

After Sandy, Poll Shows GOP Faces Growing Environmental Divide with Voters
results show the dramatic impact 2012′s extreme weather has had across party lines, with half of Republicans, 73 percent of independents and 82 percent of Democrats saying they’re worried about the growing cost and risks of extreme weather disasters fueled by climate change. It’s a major change from our December 2009 poll, which showed two-thirds of Republicans and nearly half of political independents saying they were ‘not at all concerned’ about global climate change and global warming. The political climate has shifted and members of Congress need to catch up with their constituents.

Even Rasmussen Reports Poll: 68 Percent of Americans Call Global Warming a Serious Threat
However as usual the left leaning media ‘lied by omission’ s A news poll indicates that 68 percent of voters believe global warming is a concern, but they are split on whether believing global warming is caused by man’s actions on earth.
The Media Hype on Sandy really won the day for the CAGW activists. I wonder how happy people are going to be when they see all that money disappear down the gullet of the ‘rich’ and politically connected.

You are correct.
Given how the regulating class (They are not ‘socialist’ that is just a convient mask) has come out of the closet about what there long term goals are, I am afraid that a world government is pretty much a done deal. With luck the Chinese and Russians are going to kill it but I doubt it. Australia and the EU have already fallen and the USA is on the cliffs edge. The EU BTW is the template for what they are planning.

As the world emerges from one of the worst economic crises in recent history, there is need for an organization that can provide measures of global governance. But that is a difficult task, raising issues of distance, legitimacy and power-sharing. Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, outlines the lessons that the world can learn from Europe….
The European Union is the story of a desired, defined and organized interdependence between states.

Soap box on:
Amen. the AGW scam is just one front by which they (general term to describe the greedy control mongers, alias: psychopathic narcissist) forge on. Apathy is on the side of the advancement of misinformation along with a total and intentional brainwashing from the mainstream media, K-12 and higher ed. Hang onto to the freedom within the internet, as we see in Syria, and San Fransisco, when it is of their (as in “they”) choosing, bye bye electronic communication.
My guess is a taxation on email and internet sights and other “fairness” schemes” that will turn the internet into a rich mans sport, forcing the poor to only the over the airways media, which is also being used to suppress the sheeple. Example is the cost of “energy will necessarily have to increase” to the point that the average wage earner has to way out the expense of traveling to the work place. Maslow’s theory will drive the increasing dependency on big brother.
The video posted here is another example of what seems laughable, but in truth is dangerous to those who buy into the underlying purpose.
Soap box off.

So, let me see if I have this straight:
This video (and, apparently, project) CLAIMS that “big fossil fuel” is gaming the system by planting false information everywhere that climate is discussed. And, this video then goes on to propose that the response to this is to…. game the system by planting Al Gore’s information (which is demonstrably false) everywhere that climate is discussed?
And, as an added insult to the intellect of anyone already brainwashed into it, their incentive to participants is to make it an online game, with points? Where the most points wins? What do they win?
Frankly, if there is no oversight or legal precedent for this kind of BLATANT manipulation of media and opinions, THERE SHOULD BE. This entire “reality drop” thing is SO repugnant, SO over the top, SO manipulative, that if it’s not breaking a law, then laws should be created so it is – and throw everyone involved into prison.
I have never, EVER seen any “truth” or scientific idea that needs armies of brainwashed twits to go around manipulating every discussion about it. And I never ever want to, ever again.
Anyone skimming through the comments without actually watching the video, go watch the video. THIS IS THE ENEMY – and not just the enemy of WUWT or Skeptics, but the enemy of OUR ENTIRE CIVILIZATION. The thought that the person behind this was almost President should make every thinking person fall to their knees and thank GOD for the intervention, even if they’re an atheist.

When someone has been hanging themselves (metaphorically) for thirty years, and not only are they not done but they are gaining (legal and fiscal) steam, it may be time for a strategy other than “wait.”
While we certainly don’t need new ‘speech laws,” at some point the other f-word (fraud) has to come into play.
On the other hand, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that nobody ever takes serious problems seriously enough to actually deal with them. People seem to prefer having a bogeyman to ending one.

A little Schadenfreude won’t hurt. However, before we go into Hallelujah mode…
No politician or bureaucrat is going to even look at the stats for Drop Reality, but they are unlikely to ignore things like this:
http://www.singfortheclimate.com/EN/default.aspx
It is also instructive to keep this quote from Edward Bernays in mind:
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” (Edward Bernays, Propaganda, 1928)
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays
Bernays, a nephew of Sigmund Freud, made a fortune telling governments and corporations how to “pull the wires which control the public mind.” Some of his most successful tricks were to use experts (scientists, doctors, engineers) to get the intended message across and to make sure the message was reported as “news” rather than “advertizing” or “propaganda”. With respect to climate or any other subject, politicians and bureaucrats do not care whether the science is settled or not. For them, it is enough that the propaganda is settled.

I have never been part of an organized disinformation campaign, and never will be. Such things should be subject to the same sort of legal consequences as pyramid schemes are. Both are equally provable in a court of law.
It seems clear that this goes over the top, even to the people it’s targeted at… as they’re staying away in droves. Even if this was for a cause that I fervently believed in, if someone was doing this for something I believed in, I would back stopping it. Attempting to mobilize large numbers of useful idiots was successfully used by who?
Of course, nobody so used believes that THEY are the useful idiots… it’s always their opponents…
No – I disagree that this gives the enemy more ammunition to block free speech, because it’s NOT free speech. I am somewhat shocked to see that Eric Grimsrud is not on here. He has devoted a whole section on his blog to his encounters on WUWT in which he gives this appraisal of some of the participants here.
”These goons have a name they apply to well-educated and experienced scientists who post at WUWT – they call them “trolls”. The three goons that were apparently assigned “take care of” me whenever I posted a comment had the website names, Richardscourtney, Davidmhoffer, and D Boehm. From what I could determine (none of these gentlemen could provide a scientific resume), one is a lobbyist for the coal industries, another described himself as a “business man”, and the other, as far as I could tell possesses no scientific or social skills, whatsoever. Indeed, he appears to be a truly professional goon.”

I have found that from my involvement with folks that believe this hoax called anthropogenic global warming that they actually do need ”talking points” because almost all of them are incapable of forming an opinion on the subject using their own logic and knowledge about the earth and its climate mainly because they have not cared enough about the subject to have ever really looked up anything regarding it on their own but take their clues from clueless charlatans like Al Gore and some others who hope to profit from this scam.
