Notes on the upcoming WUWT Gore-a-thon

As many are already aware, I’ve announced a first ever effort to do a 24 hour webcast to counter Al Gore’s upcoming “dirty energy = dirty weather ” campaign.

Last year we had cartoons from Josh, this year we’ll have that and more. Since for the 153rd straight month (since I’ve become a skeptic, formerly an alarmist), my “big oil” check has failed to arrive, and because of a spanner or two having been tossed into the works by snafus and snipers, I’ve decided to ask for some help.

There are some last minute equipment and software/service purchases I need to make (to solve technical snafus) that I didn’t expect. Like any venture, even with the best of planning, you don’t know how it all works until you put it together and test it. Basically I’ve built a web enabled TV station from the ground up, but as many engineers know, buying off the shelf equipment and putting it all together inevitably has some gotchas you don’t expect until you try it. The difference between sales brochures and actual operation is sometimes a wide chasm to span.

For example, I thought I’d be able to record the entire broadcast using the equipment on hand, but that turns out not to be possible when I’m also doing live streaming. I thought I’d be able to have my streaming service record the programs, and I can, but the cost is prohibitive. So now, the best option is to purchase a digital video recorder that can handle streaming.

The other spanner is that I thought I’d be able to make up my out of pocket expenses with online advertising during the webcast, but there’s been a behind the scenes shot across the bow (which I can’t talk about right now because it will cause more harm than good, but hope to be able to someday) that has squelched that possibility for me. It has also bled over to some other prominent climate science outlets, which makes me very upset, but there’s nothing I can do about it right now.

And, there’s a small laundry list of other items that need upgrading or tweaking.

So if you feel inclined, look for the orange PayPal button on the right sidebar, or click here. Small donations please, as this is a community oriented effort.

Thanks for your consideration – Anthony

UPDATE: I’m good to go folks, so I’ve removed the link above. THANK YOU – Anthony

  1. Which donation location should be used? Please clarify, and “we are from the GUMMIT, and WE are HERE TO HELP!” (OH NO!!!)

REPLY: Both lead to the same place, thanks – Anthony

  2. Looooong time WUWT reader. Never a poster and never donated prior. I have today, and I hope your efforts are fruitful.

  3. My contribution to a worthy cause doesn’t come close to the value of your site and efforts, but it’s something. May God watch over you and protect you!

  4. Donation sent – please keep up the good work, lots of us rely on you and a handful of others to keep up the pressure.

  5. a small consideration from one who has been given so much by the world’s best science website.

  6. Please keep us updated on the fund-raising goal. I am sure many could help get the word out so knowing where you are and where we need to get to would help.

  7. Still waiting for my huge pension from Big Oil but til then a few pence from my gummint one will have to do. Thanks for all your good work.

  8. I never post but I read a lot and learn even more. I hope there are many like me that are able to show their appreciation for this site and its contributors. Well not exactly like me; hopefully they are richer. Thanks Anthony. I’m looking forward to the webcast.

  9. You have my 2 cents plus and thanks for the great work. Am little worried about your getting too much exposure. There is a Save the Earth Taliban out there.

  10. Done. I blame the sky-high energy prices in the UK for not having more to give, and of course they’re caused by the wind-with-everything crowd, so good luck.

  11. Well the exchange rate was better than I thought so I’ll donate gain tomorrow in case Paypal thinks a double donation is a mistake. Looking forward to Watts Up With TV !

  12. My turn.
What’s the equivalent of ‘check in the mail’?
    Electronic transfer, perhaps.
    Unfeeling. Cold.
    Need a pleasant statement.

  13. Robert Wykoff

That’s funny. I do genealogy as a hobby and I was just now pulling down some censuses for a Robert Wyckoff. You don’t happen to have parents or grandparents of Willis and Essie, do you?

  14. Maybe no Big Oil check, but you’ve got my Big Coil check. (As in “support for inductive reasoning.”)

  15. After robbing this site blind of information for many years, I have finally given back a little bit.

    Good luck Anthony!

  16. As with tinyCO2 I will donate a further small offering tomorrow and good luck with goring the Gore

  17. A donation has been sent to assist with this web cast project and in appreciation for all the work Anthony, the moderators and contributors put into this valuable web site. Individual donations however are just a stop gap measure to tide you over until those huge Big Oil cheques start pouring in. Any moment now…

  18. Attempted, but my old PayPal acc’t has expired/been locked. Re-established, but will need (!) about a week to “verify”. A belated contribution will be forthcoming then.

  19. Oz dollars sent on their way. You were bit quick to remove the link, Anthony, but I found the PayPal button anyway.

  21. Late to the party, I know, and I saw your note about getting enough funding for this, but you’re not going to discourage me so easily! ;-p

Donated a small amount, and glad to do so. Hope it helps.

  22. Tried to donate but teh system will not let me!!!! I HATE stupid rules–it won’t let me use my CC that is used with pay pal–come onnnnnnnn I don’t want pay pal taking the money–half from card and half from account. Messy books and a huge hassel as pay pal is business and this donation is not! TDoyou have another way or can I send a check? I know its not WUWT but an insance pay pal rule.

  23. Dang it, Anthony, you closed it too soon! I have to throw my little bit in, because this is important… going to be glued to this computer chair, watching it all…. need to buy coffee, and popcorn….

  24. Put in my mite. Your wifes glorious annular eclipse photo number 1 no less is gracing my study wall even as we speak. Keep up the good work.

  25. I have a look at your site most mornings and was surprised and pleased to see this posted and fulfilled within one day. I have added my bit for all the good work you do.
    God Bless you and yours.

  26. So all the oil barons finally put up their end of the bargain? What took them so long.. /sarc. Too bad you’re not an esteemed professor of science at a “reputable” university (Like PSU) then you could spend your time writing grants and you’d have millions of dollars to spend…but only if it’s scaring people with fantastical stories of global apocalypse.

  27. Rats! Went thru all that to unlock PayPal, and you’ve got enuf orreddy! Just for that, I’ll donate anyway.

    Hah!

  28. David L;
I’ve figgered out why the Oil Barons are feeding the Warmists, not us.

They can’t lose (short of actual de-industrialization, of course.) They know the CO2/Climate Science gig is BS, but meantime there’s big grant and subsidy bucks on the table. So they skim as much of that is available, but keep the home fires burning to produce actual power and transportation, etc., instead of pixie dreams.

Gradually, the Invisible Hand of true costing squeezes till even the rent-paying pols start to squeak (Cameron, Merkel, etc.). They then begin restoring and ramping up service again, with suitable surcharges to account for projects delayed and inconveniences in general. Meantime, card house of CS continues to implode. “Tsk, tsk! More oil and gas, gentlemen?”
