Some questions for readers

I have noticed some things happening recently that lead me to ask some questions.

1a. If you are subscribed to follow WUWT via email, where you get emails advising you of new posts, are you still getting those emails? For example, a notice of this post?

1b. If you aren’t receiving those emails, are they in your SPAM filter?

2. If you are subscribed to WUWT via RSS feed, are you still able to read it in the reader of your choice?

3. Are you getting any sorts of SPAM, phishing, or “unsafe” website notices for any links that might be embedded in those emails or feeds?

Please leave answers yes/no in comments.

The reason I ask is that WordPress recently flagged WUWT as a high traffic site, and added extra advertising, for which I get a few cents per click. But, at the same time I’m wondering if that has come with a penalty in the form of a raised SPAM score due to that extra advertising.

As always, thanks for visiting and thanks for your support. – Anthony

My answers:
1) I do not subscribe to WUWT email updates
2) My RSS reader of choice is the Google Reader, and it works quite well with WUWT.
3) I have not received any “unsafe” warnings from any WUWT links in the RSS feeds.
As an aside, I also follow the WUWT update feed on Twitter, which is usually much faster than the Google Reader for new articles.

What I find interesting that ads specifically from South Africa follow me and appear on top of the new post when I open it. So my IP address identifies me and prompts an advert that they think I might respond to, depending on where you are from….

I use Google Chrome and WUWT is on the Booksmark Bar. Our DSL provider uses Zone Alarm. I check WUWT frequently and the ads are sometimes interesting. I dislike the ones that close out the page I’m on for their own loading. When I can open in a new window – I often will, and often learn something. I just now opened Sentry Insurance and learned of trucking insurance. How I will use this info, I don’t know. Meanwhile, WUWT rakes in big$$ to rival Apple’s cash balance! Right on!
Seriously, no problems for me operating as I do.
Thanks, Anthony, contributors, and mods for WUWT.

1a – 99% NA, 1% Yes only occasionally do I check “for follow-up” comments. Too many emails otherwise.
1b – NA.
2 -N/A
3 – I’m getting a lot of Spam on my primary email address. I have a second email address that I use for most Spam likely services, but I used my primary for Word Press login. I can’t prove WordPress was the source of contagion.
Yesterday, I spent a good deal of time auditing my computer to make sure I did not have any spyware or trojans. Win Security Essentials gave it a clean bill of health and I have cookies on manual.
But my palms got sweaty when I looked at my Networking Activity: (Win 7, Start Task Mgr, Resource Monitor, Network Tab, Network Connections and TCP Connections sub windows.) I sometimes I had >200 TCP connections to addresses like (while on WUWT), all through the svchost service
108.161.188.128 164,651 B/sec
74.125.227.73 23,262 B/sec
66.216.77.13 19,966 B/sec
184.29.150.8
some non-numerics were
s04.maildez.com.br; ads.pointroll.com, *.cabelp.bezeqint.net, *.ca.dc.openx.org, 888media.net
After some experimentation, I’ve concluded these are litter in the webpages.
Try this as an experiment. With only Word or PPT running to journal results.
Open your resource Monitor to Networks and screen shot to the journal.
Open IE, preferably to a slim web site, like Astronomy Picture of the Day. Snapshot Activity.
Then open online.wsj.com. Boing! TCP connections went from 90.
Switch back to APOD. TCP connections will decay
Switch to WUWT. TCP went from 20 to 100 decline to 30
Switch to Bishop-Hill TCP went from 30 to 80, decline to 20.
Switch to ClimateEtc TCP 20 to 40.
Switch to foxnews. TCP ramps quickly to 250 and a slow decline.
The information super-highway with your car pulling a hundred trailors. People complain of web page bloat, but page load size might be only a drop in the bucket compared to the active content after the page is up.

May have located a problem… don’t know if it is the same that you are speaking of though.
On IE, if InPrivate is on and set Automatic, for some reason a recent change has caused the posted pages, not the main page, to never completely load, it hangs with “Waiting for hhttp://wattsupwiththat/2012/10/02/some-questions-for-readers/…”. It’s doing it right now. You never see ‘Done.’ in the status bar and curiously, this also causes the web page “Find” bar to no longer work. May or may not be the same problem you are speaking of.
This is new problem for me in the last day or two. Other than that, I have had no problems for over three years except it has become slower and slower and slower but InPrivate fixed the speed problem cutting out all of the trackers.

Located my problem Anthony. A few googleapis were flagged and blocked. That removed the hang. One entry under wp.com though, devicepx causes a stack overflow at line 0 if *not* disabled… have no idea what is causing that quirk. Only thing I have to clear up is “Unknown Zone” coming up on WUWT pages recently… I equate that to spam. Have a feeling it’s google again.

Expanding my pop-in:
I do not get email or RSS feeds from you.
Good luck with diagnosis.
– more ads means more risk of goofs by Google or the ad source, which could create repeat requests to load an ad when the first request fails.
– timeouts due slow servers or broken Internet paths (as can occur with DNS cache problems) might generate repeat requests but not in rapid succession, though slow response might motivate users to click repeatedly on an ad. (Southwest Airlines botched their code a few weeks ago – people repeated their request when the web page appeared to not respond, the system booked another flight each time. No excuse for that – someone failed to learn from history.)
– typically ads are targeted based on page content and perhaps cookies (hopefully you are not dumb enough to use them). I suspect WUWT is classified by Google as of a certain political stripe given what I call the “rude t-shirts” web site advertised by the woman wearing a blood-stained t-shirt (I’ve seen that several times, from well before the extra ads appeared.)
– many people are stiffening their defenses against Malware because of recent widespread attacks. Thus repeat attacks are more likely to be blocked now. (Cache poisoning attempts tend to go in salvos for several minutes, but I don’t know how they work – they are targeting cached DNS databases on local servers, but ESET detects them as an incoming threat to my computer.
– thus there is probability of more rejections of requests from odd and badly run domains that people might have email on. I’d avoid HotMail because it has been extensively used by bad people trying to hide themselves (Microsoft have alternative email domains), there are far worse domains out there.
Good luck figuring out terms of service and options from WordPress/Google, neither of whom IMJ have adequate quality of coding. Churning of code without thorough testing is a common problem in the industry, including at Google.
I doubt this can be blamed on MSIE, though it has shown inability to cope with defective code (your font case a few months back, and a recent case of graphics display I found on CA pages). Conceivably MSIE could respond badly to defective advertising code (IIRC Google was a suspect for complicity in your case of MSIE and WordPress interacting inappropriately). Beware Google is dropping support for MSIE8, thus for some people Windows XP (as MSIE9 will not run on XP).
And keep in mind that many many people do not consider Google trustworthy. There are alternatives such as Microsoft/Yahoo, but I don’t have a high opinion of their competence either.
