Unfortunately, the story is behind a paywall, so we can’t read why they think this way.
But it underscores the desperation that is permeating the mainstream climate community…they have come to realize that climate has become a taboo political subject, one almost guaranteed to be political suicide this year.

And Romney got a standing ovation at the RNC for this line mocking Obama’s “healing the planet” speech…

I think we can safely say that global warming as a campaign issue for the left is dead.

Isn’t Al supposed to be revolutionizing broadcasting with his new channel, Current TV? He even hired Olberman to anchor there! Oh right, they had to fire him again a few weeks later because not even the leftie’s can stand to be in the same room with him for very long.
It’s funny to see how sympathetic outlets, like the Puffington Host, will go to great lengths to try and cover up how *badly* Current TV is doing. (but advertisers know) Look through this article on recent convention coverage; useful because it’s one of the few times we can see straight-up head to head numbers on a national event with a national audience, which gives us a very good window on competitive viewership.
The article names the different networks covering the convention last week, and the breakdown. They point out that 9 different networks provided coverage, and give the numbers for each one EXCEPT for Current TV! Why leave that out? Because it’s embarrassing to point out just how badly it is doing, but you can still back their viewership numbers out of the data given.

Unfortunately, most of the Democrats in Congress continue to sneak climate related nonsense into various Bills and Treaties.
For instance, the Farm Bill contains language related to the expansion of the Clean Water Act which will now include roadside ditches and gullies on private property. It also expands Federal lands which is completely stupid as Congress currently doesn’t have the money for necessary maintenance for existing Federal Parks and lands.
Kerry also attempted to sneak Cap and Trade legislation into the Law of the Sea Treaty. This is really evil as Treaties aren’t treated as standard legislation so they don’t get the same review and discussion.
Being from the UK I ain’t got a chicken in this fight but a thought about Al-Gore, I think he’s been taken into the Epcot centre for an upgrade, bit of a stuck record for the last few years.
Were I giving advice to the Republican campaign, I’d recommend they just run clips of President Obama’s comments over and over. Two of my favorites are the ones concerning those of us who cling to our guns and our bibles and how entrepenuers and small business owners did not create anything, the government did for them.
I recently saw something he supposedly said on our national anthem – how it was militeristic, what with bombs bursting in air, and if he could, he’d replace it with “I”d like to teach the world to sing”.
I haven’t tracked this one down to confirm if it is true, but if it is, it gets added to the top of the list.
Personally all the stuff about birth certificates and is he a Muslim is childish. President Obama is not a bad man. He is simply a man with his own ideas of how America should look. And all one has to do is listen to what he says. There is no secret conspiracy. He makes it very clear what he believes in. Which should make it simple when deciding who to vote for. You either share his vision of America’s future or you don’t. Ignore the stuff about hope and change, about maintaining the promise for the future.

The German solar industry is at a turning point. The bankruptcy of Q-Cells this week shows that the days of German solar cell production are numbered. Asian competitors took the lead years ago, and German government subsidies were part of the problem. It wasn’t so long ago that people viewed Q-Cells as an energy company of the future. At one point, it was the world’s largest manufacturer of solar cells and quarter after quarter, it topped analysts’ expectations. The company proved to be a money-making machine even during the financial crisis, with some believing it might one day grow to become part of Germany’s DAX index of benchmark companies on the stock exchange….
…At the end of 2007, the company was valued at close to €8 billion ($10.7 billion at today’s rates). Q-Cells’ production facilities were located in the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen, in a former lignite mining area in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The area was even dubbed “Solar Valley,” a play on California’s Silicon Valley.
In 2011, Q-Cells posted a loss of €846 million. As of last Tuesday, the firm had a marginal value of only €35 million and Q-Cells’ share price had plunged to just 9 cents. In Bitterfeld-Wolfen, concerns are growing about massive job losses among the 2,200 Q-Cells workers in the city.

I think there’s a precedent for that with the President.
Seems to me that Gore has bailed out as he sees no more money to be made from AGW. Others with a financial interest might be well advised to follow his lead.
Whether or not the climate is mentioned by either Biden or Barrack in tonight’s address, the subject will not be brought up by the mainstream press moderators during the three scheduled presidential debates. This might open the door for Romney to criticize the EPA’s role in shuttering coal fired power plants, plus the Department of Energy wasting taxpayer millions on Solyndra type green energy project loans. However, it wouldn’t hurt to cross your fingers.
For a man of Gore’s girth to fall off the radar, he must have reverse engineered a Klingon Cloaking Device. Now that is something Kleiner Perkins Caulfield Byers could take to market without the vast subsidies/regulations needed to make those investments worthwhile.

I would say that playing the enviro-card has lost its political value. Green activists don’t seem to understand what they are playing with. Biting back at the politicians is a fatal mistake. Having risen to the center of power, they will be banished to the wilderness.

There are few things more sickening than the American presidential race.
Market forces can never be revoked. The AGW political freak show coincides with the rise of cheap internet communications. Politics is kryptonite to real science and engineering. The solution is simple. Free Market forces will remove the money away from the AGW freak show. Stop feeding them and they will stop. Eventually.
The ideal practice of basic science must remain as free of external distractions as possible. Focus on the facts. Apply the scientific method. Formulate a clear Null hypothesis and test the hypothesis. For example, take the temperature plots for the longest running climate reference sites, plot the line of best fit. The slope of the line is zero. Thats about 10 years of zero warming. Time will favor the facts, the more good data the smaller the uncertainty in the time plots.
The same could be applied to the Antarctic science stations. 50 years of data there also show zero warming. Those stations are not immune to the “global climate” so are clear refutations of the claims of “global climate warming”

Anthony, please, oh please, oh please don’t use this unfortunate terminology. You are part of the climate community as are many others who don’t believe catastrophic man-made global warming (and/or climate change) is a proven issue. Call them what they are (catastrophists, warmists, AGW believers, CAGW proponents, whatever) but don’t cede to them ownership of the climate as a whole. It’s not theirs to possess and they haven’t earned that title. They are proponents of a hypothesis, not the owners of a pre-existing aspect of nature.

I find Judy Curry’s Climate Etc. pretty well unreadable because of the tedious perverse tendencies of some regulars there, not limited to any one of a variety of viewpoints (I think she has a lot of good articles but I rarely look at the comments there anymore). Life is too short for such nonsense — thank you Anthony for all you do!
Glad to see it is about science and not flag waving for your preferred policy option.
If the Republicans only invented one thing to distract Democrats from the real fight, which is for an economy that works for the middle class, climate change would be the perfect candidate. It’s a red herring, and judging by how it was handled by the DNC, Democrats are well aware of it.
President Obama made one mention of it in his acceptance speech, and is now unlikely to mention it again, much less do anything about it for the next four years. It’s like Republicans in years past on abortion: lip service only, which is exactly what we have seen for climate change from the White House since 2008.
Barack Obama will be re-elected. The stink factor around Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan is too high, and you know it’s true. Too many Americans will find themselves unable to pull the lever for them. And that, boys and girls, is a good thing. We desperately need to flatten income and wealth inequality in the country (we just passed the Ivory Coast in this regard), and our economy cannot function with so much of the country’s wealth tied up in so few hands. We NEED a strong middle class. The areas of focus will be wealth transfer, yes, wealth transfer, through education, expanded health care, research, and infrastructure projects. All good things, just like the GI Bill in its day.
Climate change will get another few plane tickets to the nearest climate convention, where enough umbrella drinks to cool the planet will be consumed.
It is certainly no joke to increase energy costs artificially to levels that the lower paid cannot afford. Are you listening Obama?

Climate change is a non-starter as most people in the US do not care. The alarmists have not been able to show any crises approaching. But most people know someone who is out of work, and everyone knows that inflation is a lot higher than the government lets on.

President Barack Obama’s Democratic National Convention speech declared that American voters can “do something about” extreme weather by supporting his re-election.
Obama: “And yes, my plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet – because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke.
They’re a threat to our children’s future. And in this election, you can do something about it.”

Climate change may have been demoted as a voter motivator, something I am relieved to see at the end of this summer. But, it still lives as a regulator motivator, ranking above God in the party platform. The scientific basis for climate change isn’t nearly as robust as the political basis. In the political, you need only have the possiblity of something bad – not any reasonable basis or expectation. That’s why you have every major newspaper, every university and the president using the word “pollution” as a vague pejorative in connection with carbon. (Why not oxygen pollution then? It’s corrosive, you know.)

I assume the above vent was born out of frustration (not serious). Science articles can be found anywhere. It is the consequential discussion that most readers, come here for… IMO. It would be a grave error to assume that people come here to read the latest science. If you let people know that sufficient bad behavior will change blog policy… you will be inundated with bad behavior from the enemies of truth and open discussion. Don’t mention it or even think it… just ban them when they become numerous and continuously disruptive. Better yet, why not just get a few more volunteer moderators, if you can’t endure anymore? GK
