The GWPF and Jo Nova web sites down

Many people have emailed me to ask what is going on, here’ s what I’ve found out.

Bishop Hill reports:

A couple of readers have emailed to say that GWPF’s website is down. I emailed Benny Peiser and he says that there are technical issues of some kind. The site will remain down for a couple of days. I gather that email is also affected, so anyone wishing to contact them should telephone instead.

Which explains why my query to Peiser was not answered.  Never put your email and web server int he same basket.

Jo Nova’s website is also experiencing problems. She’s had a lot of technical trouble since she moved to a new provider. I expect this to be no different.

No cause for alarm.

It’s probably our Aussie Labor Government and their minions trying to shut us all up….. They seem to be attacking free speech and a free media at the moment. 😉
I jest…. But in a small corner of my mind I can’t help wonderin’.
…. anyway, JoNova is back up.

Well you could take a page out of the TEAMS playbook and write it up and run with it anyways.

I’m very curious what these attacks are. They seem to be increasing. Would be worth a post.

Could this be an attack and/or related to Steve McIntyre speaking Thursday, 16 August 2012, 3pm at Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, 1 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5DB ??

I am wondering.
I’m a senior and not terribly well versed with the high tech world but I thought I would mention that over the last few months, my icon for Anthony’s WUWT blog disappears every week or so. No other icon has done this.
In addition, it keeps disappearing from my favourites file. Am I the only one experiencing this? Are these just senior moments? Again, this is the only one.
Just wondering.

Interesting. I wonder if the legal entities would even lift a finger to go after whoever is behind the attacks.
Probably not, they are just hired thugs anyway. (I can be proven wrong… provided a law enforcement agency has the integrity to go after them with as much zeal as they apparently have for alleged attacks against pro-warming bleaters.)

Delete, renew, transfer and update prohibited? For a an expiry date of only 4 days past? That’s a bit rugged. A good reason to change hosting or providers, methinks. Benny (or his administrator) should have got the renewal reminder emails every week for the past two months.

I didn’t want to speculate on the source of Jo Nova’s website outages which have been ongoing for the last few months. It does seem that it is getting a DDOS attack every two to three weeks. The forbidden message is a result of an automated script which modifies the attacked file permissions to protect the larger server infrastructure from going down. Which, means Jo’s email will still work even though you can’t view her site.
We have a global team that works(for free) around the clock to keep Jo’s site up. We try to reduce any outages the site may suffer to a minimum.

I had issues with accessing a couple of sites last week. Seems to have been caused by corrupted cookies. A couple of sweeps through the ‘puter with a cookie cleaner prog sorted the problem. Of course it had taken me three days of fiddling to figure it out.
I sometimes wonder if half the problems with the internet are because there are too many people/idjuts/duffers like me using it.???

For PC users it pays to keep your computers updated and virus-free. Keep only the few cookies that are necessary (Under Windows I recommend CCleaner for this).
See my “PC Security” page at http://www.oarval.org/avalencia/Secureen.htm
For webmasters, well, we are supposed to know what we are doing.

JoNova went down again at ~1:00 PM EST 8/15/12. The link to her site now says: “This Account Has Been Suspended.” This is becoming way too common, and starting to look like censorship. How come we never get that message when we click on Real Climate, Think Progress, or Rabett Run?

Hi, yes indeed, the site appears to be under attack. We’ve had two DOS attacks today and now another stronger different one, all in 24 hours. Obviously we will be looking closely at our options to stop this.

Jo, I imagine that Julia Gillard is none to pleased with your coverage of her corruption scandal, that the media is also refusing to cover. Perhaps the DOS attacks are coming from people affiliated with her government? I linked to your story at several MSM news blogs and their lefty moderators promptly deleted the links.

August 15, 2012 1:00 pm

From Bishop Hill, well worth a read. IMHO here is a profile of the kind of person that could and would DDOS Jo Nova:

The Guardian’s science editor, Robin McKie, went to see Ten Billion, a one-man show by computer scientist Stephen Emmott. This is slightly odd. The Guardian is losing tens of millions of pounds every year and yet this is their second review of the show…
We face a future in which billions will starve, he states. Britain, which could come off relatively lightly when 6C rises in global temperature take effect, will be turned into a military outpost dedicated to preventing waves of immigrants reaching our shores.
Geoff Chambers: Note the fawning mentions of the presence of senior military officers at climate conferences, and the recommendation to teach your children how to use a gun. Frustrated Greens can get very nasty, at least in their fantasies.
Alex Cull: According to one reviewer, the only real solution Prof. Emmott offers is a totalitarian world government: “His one possible solution sounds something like a single global crisis-government be formed, and that it be unelected, and that its power be supreme…”
Geoff Chambers: According to McKie, Emmott has been bombarded with offers of TV documentary versions… McKie thinks the show works because “there are no Paxmans to quibble over details and no climate gainsayers to make arcane or inaccurate objections… Without the clamorous voices of climate change deniers who constantly question the minutiae of scientists’ research or cherry-pick data, Emmott has shown that it is possible to make a straightforward, telling demonstration of the dreadful problems we face.”
Foxgoose: “Why are so many computer scientists afflicted with this apocalyptic garbage?…”
Geoff Chambers: Emmott says after a blog article he had a thousand replies, half of them ranting… the other half insisting that the message must be spread…

Stephen Emmott is Head of Computational Science, Microsoft; Professor of Computational Science, University of Oxford.
Since the real ranter here is Emmott, it seems likely that he’s seeing all his challengers, no matter how logical, relevant, and courteous, as ranters. I’m not accusing Emmott himself of the DDOS attacks on Jo Nova. But one of his lesser minions, groupies, or imitators? or someone like Gleick? There seem to be several of those around, and Emmott doesn’t seem to be that far off either.

Thank you to Anthony et al for everything you have done. I deeply admire your hard work and persistance in getting at the truth. I would like to make a further financial contribution but have had difficulties with online banking (senior moments I expect). I hope the web problems are soon sorted for Jo Nova and GWPF.

Funny thing about attacks on sites for ‘censorship’ is that it is counterproductive as it tends to increase ones interest in what they are trying to censor. Anyone have a link to the relevant material?

Re: the prohibitions mentioned in the quote below, this isn’t anything nefarious. It’s common practice to lock down the domain registration like that. It’s to protect the registration from poachers and others of dubious intent. If you’re the domain owner, there are ways around the lock, more than which respondent saith not. For obvious reasons.

Exactly my first thought. She makes a vicious enemy. Its a bit too much of a coincidence that this concerted effort to silence Jo should happen immediately after that.

If you can get past the links to sites with personal attacks then ‘Not a Hoon’ has a link to Alan Jones radio show on 2GB which I give 10/10. Wow! Just Wow! ‘Australiagate’?

don’t read too much into account suspended page.
on a cpanel server when a webmaster disables a site this is a default page.
and as stated above when ddos happening they take site offline to protect server.

A friends website went down, and he is at odds with a woman who wrote rubbishy text on his ancestor. She was an adjunct lecturer at the UNiversity had a blog about the subject she could libel and slander those who opposed her, lied, in public and I complained to the university when compared to holocaust or climate change deniers. She amended her blog but the podcast thatI took down is slanderous and defamatory. Anyway, my friends website disappeared for a few days. Back up again, maybe the government is doing a sweep of those in certain categories
who appear to them to be insurgents disagreeing with the government on various policies or their friends?
