Climate Craziness of the Week – 'blazing the trail'

Some people are just beyond help.

At Canadian embassy, global warming protester nears starvation

By IAN DUNCAN — Tribune Washington Bureau

On a patch of pavement outside the Canadian Embassy, Jay McGinley is trying to starve himself to death.

After drinking nothing but water for more than 30 days, he appears close to achieving his goal. When he stands up, his dark blue sweater hangs from a wasted frame.

On the 21st day of his hunger strike, May 15, McGinley was hospitalized briefly when his kidneys almost failed. He returned to his post the next day. Wednesday would be his 36th day without food.

He demands that the United States stop using fossil fuels, particularly those harvested from tar sands deposits in Canada. He is confident that if 1,000 people were to die for his cause, the government would act.

“I need to get us from 1,000 to 999 as fast as possible,” he said. “I need to blaze that trail.”

Apparently he’s tried this before: May 6th, 2007 from NPR:

Hunger Striker Wants to Make Difference in Darfur

Which goes back to 2005.

He apparently has changed his name to “start loving”. Like “Vermin Supreme” he seems to be a professional protestor. Here’s a blog about him. Me thinks he’ll pull out of this latest hunger strike at the last minute, after all, the man is a professional.

I leave you with this (those with weak stomachs may wish to logoff now):

After announcing her candidacy for President of the United States and Prime Minister of Israel, Roseanne Barr decides to talk to people on the street. Here is the interview that follows with peace activist “Start Loving.”

Man, I can’t stick to my diet for more than 2 days. Maybe I should become an alarmist for a bit. “You’re all DENIERS. I’m going to starve myself until the sea level rise drops to a less alarming level, like 3.1mm/yr.”

ONE in three Scots families will have to go without heating within three years if fuel costs keep rising. A study showed average energy bills were on course to top £1500 by 2015.
When that happens, six out of 10 families will be forced to go without adequate heating and a third will switch off altogether. Ann Robinson, of who commissioned the survey, said: “Once the average bill hits £1500 a year, consumers will be forced to compromise on their comfort, health and well-being.”

Daily Record
According to Age Concern, 23,000 people die each winter from cold … that was when most could afford their heating!
This protester is a heartless selfish zealot who cares nothing for the poor and elderly who have to pay for his ego through not only their heating bills, but in many cases through their early deaths.
Even at current rates, excess winter deaths in the UK over the next 100 years will be around 2.3million. That is a real holocaust. One being denied by people like this. And it could get much worse. In the 1690s estimates put the death rate from cold (during the last Maunder Minimum) at ONE QUARTER OF THE SCOTTISH POPULATION. The effect of this famine was so great that it led to the collapse of Scotland as an independent nation. We are now being told we are entering a new Maunder Minimum, but no one in government is ready because idiots like this think they have a god given right to fill the heads of politicians with heartless lies about the “danger” of warming.

Once he has lost all of the weight he can he should stop with the water. This will reduce the amount of imported Canadian energy needed for the cremation.
Do you think that the scarf is 100% wool?
[He is confident that if 1,000 people were to die for his cause, the government would act.]
Typical green, others should suffer because he says so.

The most important thing about this story is that it’s hardly a story.
Hunger strikes and other forms of civil disobedience can be remarkably effective when their goal is popular with some part of the aristocratic elite.
The total lack of media traction tells us that his cause is dead. Even the media are too tired to care.

Why starve yourself? Why not simply hold our breath and stamp your feet until other people do what you want?
Of course if your parents gave in why you tried this at a young age, they will have taught you that the way to get people to do what you want is to harm yourself unless they do, and then use their compassion against them.

Brendan
May 30, 2012 5:52 pm

Ahhh yes. We had a bunch of these in Australia. Under the banner of a mob called “Climate Justice Fast” which wanted to “raise public awareness of the desperately urgent need for strong action on the climate crisis”. They vowed to fast until a deal was struck at Copenhagen. Well we all know how that worked out. Funny thing is, the main poster child, a Paul Connor, ended the hunger strike after 43 days, describing Copenhagen as a “monumental failure”. He now is a “Quit Coal” activist who chains himself to drilling rigs.
Raised and fed well on the activisit teat.

I have two questions: (1) is Jim McGinley (A.K.A. “Start Loving”) an organ donar? and (2) if he is and dies of starvation, are his organs still any good?

He left a place where he *could* make a difference, his family, his community. He walked away from them for something that was important to *him*. Something he knows he’s not going to make a difference on, an impersonal, giant distant problem. And now he’s trying to “check out” of that battle as well.
He is correctly seen by most observers as mentally ill, not as someone accomplishing anything. He could have done something, other people have, that would gather people to him and produce results, instead he pushes people away and accomplishes nothing. And he thinks 999 other people should do this too?
I’m horrified at the values this person holds, pure destruction, negativity, fear, and cowardice.
I strongly disagree with the value and actions of people like Mann, Hansen, et al, but they accomplished something (however temporary) for their cause.
I’ve never heard of Jay McGinley before and, odds are, never will again.

Apologies to Jerry Garcia (RIP) and the Dead
The starving guy made me think of this:
Truckin’ got my chips cashed in. Keep truckin’, like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin’ on.
Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street.
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it’s all on the same street.
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.
Dallas, got a soft machine; Houston, too close to New Orleans;
New York’s got the ways and means; but just won’t let you be.
Most of the cats that you meet on the streets speak of true love,
Most of the time they’re sittin’ and cryin’ at home.
One of these days they know they gotta get goin’
Out of the door and down on the streets all alone.
Truckin’, like the do-dah man. Once told me “You got to play your hand”
Sometimes your cards ain’t worth a damn, if you don’t lay’em down,
Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it’s been.
What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn’t the same
Livin’ on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is “Ain’t it a shame?”
Truckin’, up to Buffalo. Been thinkin’, you got to mellow slow
Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin’ on.
Sittin’ and starin’ out of the hotel window.
Got a tip they’re gonna kick the door in again
I’d like to get some sleep before I travel,
But if you got a warrant, I guess you’re gonna come in.
Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowling pin.
Knocked down, it get’s to wearin’ thin. They just won’t let you be.
You’re sick of hanging around and you’d like to travel;
Get tired of traveling and you want to settle down.
I guess they can’t revoke your soul for tryin’,
Get out of the door and light out and look all around.
Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me, What a long strange trip it’s been.
Truckin’, I’m a goin’ home, Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin’ home.

Bill Engvall, a comedian, had the appropriate response: “Here’s your Sign!” He proposed that all stupid people should carry a sign that simply states “I’m Stupid.” Then, when we approached them to ask “What the heck do you think you’re doing?”, we might spot their sign and compassionately excuse ourselves with a simple “My apologies. I didn’t see your sign!”
It is profoundly stupid, for a carbon based life form to deliberately starve oneself to death on a planet so richly appointed with carbon based food and energy, in a quixotic attempt to convince a few billion other carbon based humans to ‘stop using carbon’. ‘Here’s your Sign’, indeed….

I find the gallows humour here funny but can’t help but feel sorry for these sots. My god how low will the CAGW cult go? They use people up and spit them out. On to the next sucker who they can brainwash into getting their 15 minutes of fame and dispose of them. I was horiffied by the couple that not only killed themselves in despair but their children as well. This pales in comparison to that but I still can’t help but feel sorry for the guy because he has serious mental health issues and is just being used byt the CAGW cult. Yet it will be blamed on the skeptics because we wouldn’t just go along with the CAGW story that caused people to take extreme measures.

Actually he has not met the main criterion, in that he is still corporeal. To really qualify he would have to become like the famous Monty Python parrot: “E’s passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! ‘E’s expired and gone to meet ‘is maker! ‘E’s a stiff! Bereft of life. ‘E rests in peace! If you hadn’t nailed ‘im to the perch ‘e’d be pushing up daisies! ‘Is metabolic processes are now ‘istory! ‘E’s off the twig! ‘E’s kicked the bucket. ‘E’s shuffled off ‘is mortal coil, rung down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisible!!”
I would suggest that if he does manage to emulate the parrot, it could be judged an accident, given his previous history of inability to accomplish this goal for Darfur.

Years ago at the Univ of Iowa Med School, two prospective medical students showed how much they wanted to be doctors by sitting out in front of the school on beach lounge chairs and having a starve-in. They kept track of their resulting acidosis by checking the acidity of their urine. They then proudly showed the admissions director how smart they were. The director told them that anybody who was stupid enough to starve themselves, particularly someone who wants to be a doctor, was showing him clearly that they were too stupid to be admitted, ever!
They were caught sneaking off to the local McDonalds late at night and other students were smuggling them milkshakes during the day. Now that ‘s dedication.

This goes far beyond “Climate Craziness of the Week”. This “man” wants the US to stop using ALL fossil fuels. If this was to happen tomorrow, I guesstimate that within 2 months at least 250 million would be dead, at least 20 million would have fled, and the remainder would be in a state of civil disorder that would be killing millions more a week as some survivors try to take food from the few low level producers that remain, who would defend their property to the death. This should be obvious to anyone with half the brain of a Mycoplasma.
p.s. Perhaps this would be the way to stop the “Climate being destroyed by CO2” madness. If all producers of fossil fuels were to shut down for a week or two, citing EPA endangerment/pollution findings and DoD global warming national security warnings, then the average person would note exactly what the result of these extremist views would be. The lunatic fringe, whether climate “scientists”, bureaucrats or “environmentalists would be discredited forever (hopefully) and we could all get back to our normal lives.
It is my (probably wrong) understanding that a contract that requires an action that is either illegal or immoral is unenforceable so that supply contracts that require the destruction of the world or national security should come under that heading.

Note the American Psychological Association has an alarmist “Resolution on Affirming Psychologists’ Role in Addressing Global Climate Change” here http://www.apa.org/about/policy/climate-change.aspx

Scottish Sceptic “ONE in three Scots families will have to go without heating within three years if fuel costs keep rising.”
Is this MSM fear mongering, one that has been said to, ‘injure civil society’?
So, MSM proclaims 30% of the consumer market evaporates, unable to meet exorbitant extortionate power prices – surely, on the basis of supply/demand one assumes either the price will eventually decline to meet the market or the power company goes out of business? What is the cut-off customer number, before the power generating company starts running at a loss because it has priced itself out of the market? 30% priced out of the market = unintended consequence, eg. civil unrest, societal collapse and mayhem. The CAGW elite will be on a balmy beach somewhere saying “Let them eat cake.”

And this so soon after the recent report of the Swiss woman who died trying to live off of sunshine in January 2011.
Sadly though, I’m certain I could convince some Green people of a future miracle of genetic engineering, when chlorophyll is incorporated into human skin pigmentation and people will only need sunshine and water and some occasional dirt to survive. This will thrill many PETA people, provided it’s not tested on animals before we deploy it starting with human embryos.
BTW, there are living Darwin Award winners. The specification is removing oneself from the gene pool, preferably in a spectacular fashion. A more common method involves males acting like “macho” gangsta thugs, and jamming a loaded handgun under their waistband/belt in the front.
