Friday Funny – if I were running a billboard campaign…

There’s been a lot of spoof/satire images poked at the Heartland Billboard. For example these being run by Michael Tobis, who desperately needs traffic: http://planet3.org/2012/05/04/the-correct-response-to-heartlands-disgusting-billboards/

…here’s the kind of billboard I would have run.

I welcome reader submissions, just post them to an image drop like tinypic or imageshack and leave the URL in comments, and I’ll add appropriate candidates to the main thread. Be careful of the site rules, and don’t assume I’ll carry every one.

Think like Josh and keep it clean and on-topic.

For those who have no idea what this means, read this.

h/t to WUWT reader TerryMN for the idea.

UPDATE 1: Steve McIntyre offers his submission in comments, not quite a billboard, but we’ll take it for sheer hilarity value.

This is good! Skeptics make fun of themselves. Warmists: were there any warmist parodies of the 10:10 No Pressure campaign?
Perhaps that is evidence of truth-telling, the ability to question yourself. The more you are fixed in your position, the more you suspect that the position is less defensible that you’d like.

How about a graphic of a post-1900 temperature chart line with one monkey jumping up and down one the line in the 1st 50 or so years, and a chimp under the line in the recent decades pushing it up. One might call it “Chimp Adjustments.” Anyone welcome to use this idea without need to give credit. In lieu of chimps one could use “scientists” in white lab jackets, polar bears, anything.

There is an essential difference between MT’s post and Josh’s (I’m presuming that Josh did the artwork here) and it is typical of most of Josh’s work. The Heartland thing got some coverage in major papers, in particular the LA Times so some people outside of the blogging cognoscenti are likely to be aware of it. The references in the images in the P3 post use recognizable figures or equally silly equivalencies to poke fun at the billboard. Josh’s take is so obscure as to be worthless and not funny. Just like his cartoons.

The bold claim in this billboard:

All the evidence says that global warming is caused by high solar activity
None of that evidence appears in the IPCC reports

is documented by my expose of omitted variable fraud in the First Order Draft of AR5. I hereby give Heartland (and anybody else) permission to put this up, and urge them do so. Only $200 bucks a day on that digital billboard overlooking the Eisenhower Expressway? I might put it up for one day myself!

They did say these were electronic billboards, right? They cycle from one billboard to the next?
If so, get two in a row, both with that picture of Mann with the tree ring. On the first one to the left, the Hockey Stick. The caption, “with this one tree ring”. The second would have the tree photoshopped out of the Mann picture. To the left the chart without Yamal 06. The caption, “without that one tree ring”.

May 11, 2012 8:12 pm

My biggest hope is that a 30 to 60 second ad could be done that graphically brings home the two main AGW debunking points that 1) current temps and the current climate is in no way unusual (show that the h stick has been DEBUNKED!), and 2) that CO2 has not been shown to be a cause of warming (excerpt the gist of this ~three minute video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK_WyvfcJyg). There is NO empirical evidence in fact that CO2 causes climate scale warming, all there is is just an ambiguous arguable theoretical model.
This ad would be the mainstay of a campaign that could be self-perpetuating through contributions (conservatives, now fired up by the AGW issue, would be willing to give big $ to an effective anti-AGW campaign). Several secondary ads would “hit and run” on subsidiary issues, like the credibility and deceptions of the fear-mongering Chicken Littles, or how all the warmists’ predictions of doom have failed. ALL. This campaign could break public opinion in our favor. And public opinion can be the only judge of what is considered the “correct” science, so we would have won.
But I like the billboard idea, but even better: banner ads for the web (cheap cheap!, and potentially very effective with just a simple visual). Run banner ads that take on the two key debunking points. Show the fabricated hockey stick in an extremely cost-effective banner ad. There’s nothing wrong with the climate! Show the key CO2 deception of the ipcc (as repeated by algor in the youtube I reference). Also: ALL their models & predictions have failed, sounding like broken records, Sea Level honesty (go to the beach!), quotes of the warmists, the warmists’ war on energy and industrial civilization, and much more.
The banner ads would link to a page that gives full, rebuttal resistant support for the claims, and has a request for a donation (make sure you make the point to potential donors that a few dollars will go a long long way with thousands of banner ad impressions, and in small print request a donation on the banner ad itself). Donations could allow these banner ads to run at saturation levels, and gain a dominant position in the public’s eye! So… go for it! Bypass the liberal MSM, and go directly to the public.

Can I add my own Friday funny. Up here in central British Columbia in Prince George we have been noticed for having the most potholed infested roads in BC. This is a result of snow melt water/rain and early spring freeze and thaw breaking up the pavement. Well the last few years it has gone from bad to worse from the lack of proper road maintenance. In Thursdays May 10th local paper called the Citizen a local fellow writes a column generally covering science related subjects. Think of him as our science guy. Anyhow he blames our increase in potholes on climate change, just the words climate change. He is very pro man caused climate change (warming). He goes on to say as the climate warms we will get more freeze thaw cycles. He does not back this up with any data, local or regional.

Well, as my contribution to the “Rat Controversy”, realize that while rabbits and rodents are closely related, we are closely related to both of them… which would explain why they work so well for lab, er, rats….
http://chiefio.wordpress.com/2012/03/31/glires-and-euarchontoglires/
It seems that the primate line split off, but not that long ago… so to call someone a “rat” is not that far off…
FWIW, both rats and bunnies have a kind of ‘hind gut fermentation’ that makes them ruminants. Our appendix is the remnant of that organ. It is not as inactive as some folks claim, and the bacteria that live in it may be making needed vitamins…
But thank God we gave up the rest of the ‘hind gut fermenter’ process. Eating the, um, fermented product; for a second pass…. so “eat, er poo” has ancestral precedent…

Don’t let the Earth grow cold
Just reach out and call their name, their name

No matter how much truth slips away

Some Billboards I would like to see:
A billboard showing sea level in Manhattan (Westside Highway) in 1988 and again in 2012 with a caption that World Reknown Climate Scientist Hansen predicted it will be under water by 2008.
With a question at the bottom “Do you still think it is wise to spend $trillions$ and destroy the US and world economy based on the current status of climate science?”
Another one showing the surface temperature graph from 1990 to 2012 plotted along side of Hansen’s famous “Business as Usual” scenario.
Caption would be ” So who are the climate deniers?”
Another one could be one with a picture of a windmill…. 100,000 windmills built: For every GREEN JOB created… 2.4 real jobs LOST. The next one could be yours.

Hey, Rattus, would you like to buy a word for that first sentence? Mocking someone for being a genius, but having errors in their message is pure, well, genius.

Anthony, I appreciate you running this thread for rebuilding peace and good relationships with Heartland.
Several years back I downloaded three of Heartland’s posters. They were so nice, so polite, and so heartbreaking… in effect “please let us in on the debate”… “don’t slam the door in our face”… unfortunately I can no longer find them.

Or rather . . . . . snicker-snack!

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought —
So rested he by the Tumtum gree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wook,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
`And has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Calloh! Callay!
He chortled in his joy.
From the poem ‘The Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carroll

It seems a pity that WUWT cannot provide the facility because it exists on Jo Nova’s blog.
Anyway, I thank you for your attempts to help me with this. Perhaps it doesn’t work because grumpy old men like me are not adequately competent at using others’ – and modern – software.

While I don’t think solar effects are the cause of the measured warming, a billboard with a picture of the sun and the caption,’ The source of global warming’, would be effective.
It’s simple and easy to comprehend. The problem with many of the suggestions above is they would be lost on many if not most people.

rogerknights
May 12, 2012 7:42 pm

Here’s a forward-looking idea for a Josh cartoon. If there’s a downtrend in temperatures for the next two or three years, then a translucent hockey stick could be superimposed on a temperature chart with the blade pointing downwards and the shaft lying horizontal over the current hiatus. No caption would be needed.
Maybe the cartoon could be posted even now, with the caption, “What the future holds?” and the decline portion shown with dashed lines. It would be a good accompaniment to then next article predicting a major cooling trend.
……………..
Photoshop Patchy into a red-and-black Devil’s costume, add a pitchfork and an evil grin, and top it off with the caption, “Things will get warmer for you, ha-ha-ha!” His mephistopholean beard makes it perfect. Too bad Hansen lacks one, because that’s his recent message too.
……………
Heat waves rising (wiggly vertical lines) over a globe and forming themselves into a question mark, indicating doubt about warming.
…………..
A picture of Hansen or Gore with a red slash line across them, the slash being a downward pointing hockey stick..
…………..
A horizontal hockey stick slashed through with a standard red “NO” line.
……………
A pair of upraised shackled hands snapping a hockey stick (with its blade upturned at the right) in half. It is based on the well-known (to warmists) logo of the War Resisters League, in which the hands are snapping a rifle. It would be witty and annoying to warmists. The legend around the rim would read, “Gore Resisters league.”
……………
a Stevenson screen graphic: The eyes should be the sort of X’s that are conventionally used to indicate befuddlement or drunkenness, and the mouth should be down-turned to indicate an unhappy face. Or a green “Mr. Yuck” face.
…………
A cartoon of a quack doctor’s office. Mr. Globe is standing by while a wacky, weird-beard doc squints at a thermometer under a microscope (implying a nearly undetectable change from normal) with his thumb on the bulb, saying, “You have a fever.” On the wall is an ad for an ice pack with a price tag of $1 trillion.

A cartoon of a quack doctor’s office. Mr. Globe is standing by while a wacky, weird-beard doc squints at a thermometer under a magnifying glass that is focusing the rays from an intense worklight onto the thermometer, saying, “You have a fever.” On the shelf (or Mr. Globe’s head) is an ice pack with a price tag of $1 trillion.

Alec Rawls (two solar pix), maybe alcheson’s “jobs lost”, maybe the corn one; Bill Tuttle’s “not just for skeptics anymore”, John Whiteman’s NASA, John A’s Mencken, some of Lucy’s bumper stickers — are a) short enough to read in a couple of seconds, and b) not so inside-baseball that they might mean something to those not “following” the issue on the Web.
Visitors and commenters here seem to have little idea just how little most people know about the grotty details of the Warmist deceptions, etc.

Richard and Gunga Din;
the “CA Assistant” is a FIREFOX tool — and depends on having the Greasemonkey add-on installed to execute the script.
As for the HTML tags, use <i> </i> for italics, <b> </b> for bold.
Gunga Din: to display the carets the way I just did, there are HTML codes: & lt ; for < , without the spaces, etc. (To see it in action, since you have CA Assistant, click the < symbol to see it appear in your text).

Unfortunately Anthony, almost no one would understand what your bill board means. Heartland’s billboard was obvious and actually right on the mark. Remember the Ugandans who were being killed for carbon credits? You had a post about it:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/09/25/they-had-to-burn-the-village-to-save-it-from-global-warming/

May 14, 2012 8:43 am

All these good ideas just underline how stupid Heartland was to run the original billboard. Memo to Joe Bast: fire your current PR firm and just come to WUWT for ad concepts — save $$ and trouble at the same time.
