Climate Craziness of the Week – Forbes Steve Zwick loses it

Steve Zwick
Steve Zwick

Wow, it doesn’t get much uglier than this. In my opinion, this is hate speech. Steve Zwick writes in his Forbes column:

We know who the active denialists are – not the people who buy the lies, mind you, but the people who create the lies.  Let’s start keeping track of them now, and when the famines come, let’s make them pay.  Let’s let their houses burn.  Let’s swap their safe land for submerged islands.  Let’s force them to bear the cost of rising food prices.

They broke the climate.  Why should the rest of us have to pay for it?

People who doubt the magnitude of CO2/AGW driven climate change broke the climate?

I suppose then that Mr. Zwick has never driven a car, never taken an airplane trip, never heated or cooled his home, never bought products produced overseas and shipped here, never grilled at a BBQ, or never used electricity to power his computer to write his litany of hate for Forbes. No, he’s apparently not used any CO2 producing modern convenience at all, which is why he bizarrely believes he has some sort of moral high ground.

His hypocrisy is beyond description. His full essay is here.

For those who wish to complain about his hate speech against fellow Americans, see the Forbes Contact page here.

As for his points about the Yale poll trying to make us all fear the weather as some human caused machination of climate, read this.

How does asking to see the evidence equal “They broke the climate”? Does wanting to see the data cause more CO2?

Do you ever find yourself reading something by a commentator you disagree with and wanting to punch them in the face? Do you listen to people on the other side of the political debate and find yourself almost hating them?

Once again this exposes the warmists as a religion and not a science and engineering issue.
There is still no empirical evidence supporting the warmist nonsense (excepting the bent data, which has been mostly pointed out here and at junkscience.com). So, just like the current US election, the desperate believers are thrashing about getting ever more strident and ever more far from truth. I’m stocking in extra popcorn and adult beverage. When the final meltdown occurs (pardon the pun) it will be a sight to behold.

It looks like the global warming wars are turning into hate crimes. I was on think progress the other day. The warmists are cheering the tornado damage in red states. One Australian said he was happy when there were disasters in areas that did not believe in global warming/climate change. None of this looks good on humanity.

April 19, 2012 2:29 pm

Like I said before, it’s sad that the alarmists are making everyone not want a warmer climate. The alarmists don’t want it because they think the world will end. And skeptics don’t want it because it shows how foolish the alarmists assertions are. Yet, I want a warmer climate. I think it’s ridiculous that there’s still ice on this planet which wouldn’t take much at all when we consider cosmic scales to have the entire planet frozen over and these guys want it colder? Also, at below 200 ppm, there isn’t enough CO2 to keep plants alive. We’re on the low end of the spectrum. If we take up Steve Zwick on his offer, then mountainous regions are his and coastal lands are ours, right? RIGHT?

Hey, Steve, I’m ready to swap my land for some beach front property right now. My house is at 5,000 feet, so if you or your friends have some beach front property that you are worried about loosing to AGW, let me know and we can arrange a trade.

From the comments:

If you look at the typical profile of a denier, you will find most of them are old, white men (just think of the Koch brothers and the rest of the 1%) who won’t be around, and certainly don’t want to be around when the fire catches hold. They are also most likely to have enough money to protect themselves, or their descendents to some extent as well. I suspect that some of them are also psychopaths with no sense of empathy toward others.
As ever, it’s the 99% who will suffer the most severe burns and it is this 99% who need to be persuaded to stop burning fossil fuels as we are all pouring gas on the fire right now. When the spark ignites we can be sure that the deniers will be long gone to their islands and bunkers.
So what can we do? Apart from reducing our individual impacts we can cooperate with those around us to build communities which can become resilient to disasters through things like local farming, local production, education and repair and innovation centers. We need to walk away from the lifestyle that is helping to burn down our houses.

If there are famines but they turn out to be a result of solar caused global coolling perhaps even accompanied by lack of CO2 what should we do Mr Zwick? The global warming scare would be blamed for the lack of preparation and therefore most of the deaths.
Will not take your advice but curious to know what it would be.

We know who the active catastrophists are – not the people who buy the lies, mind you, but the people who create the lies. Let’s start keeping track of them now, and when the famines come, let’s make them pay. Let’s subject their 14,000 sq ft houses to civil forfeiture. Let’s swap their private jets and cushy salaries for the tenement and food stamp lifestyle to which they would condemn others. Let’s force them to bear the cost of rising food and energy prices.
They broke the economy to enrich and empower themselves. Why should the rest of us have to pay for it?
That game may be played by more than one …

I laughed at this part of the article:
“they still can’t tell you exactly which specific storms arose from climate change and which would have happened anyway – and they probably never will.”
-snip-
“But they can tell us how many extreme events would happen each year on average without manmade greenhouse gasses, so we can see what percentage of the damage is caused by man and what percentage is caused by nature.”

So, there has to be some kind of algorithm for the second part. But how did they test its accuracy given what’s stated in the first part?

I have to stick up for Forbes a bit here. Forbes asked me to blog on their site a couple of years ago. In that time, they have exercised no editorial control over what I do, and I presume over what Mr. Zwick does. Forbes isn’t endorsing his views in any way, even by allowing them to remain posted. Nor do they, I am pretty sure, moderate comments except maybe for profanity. The author can do that, and if comments are disappearing, blame Zwick, not Forbes. Forbes is just offering the platform, and is obviously seeking writers from all sides of the political spectrum.
I agree with an earlier poster – please, please, let’s not take away these folks’ platform to speak. Every time they say crazy stuff like this hurts their cause. Asking for Forbes to take the column down is only going to help Zwick. Remember you Napoleon – never interrupt and enemy when he is making a mistake.

Science fiction is full of stories about a lone hero, or group of heros, detecting some danger and running around trying to convince others to take the proper course of action to prevent the disaster or, at least, try to save people from it. Often they meet with resistance, usually from those who have something to gain from the disaster or what led to the disaster. The heros do not wish evil on the resisters. They try to help them. Often the resisters do wish evil on the heros. So, who fits which role in this SciFi story of Catastrophic Man Made Global Warming … er … Climate Change?

I see Steve Zwick’s potted bio on Forbes says:
===================================================================
I edit Ecosystem Marketplace, an online news service that reports on market-based solutions to environmental problems — a calling I received after a career trading futures, writing about business, and getting entangled in a few local environmental campaigns.
===================================================================
… futures trading is basically a casino. It’s the money sponge which has helped create the modern economic meltdowns and contributed heavily to the high rates of inflation we suffer. His economic knowledge and his scientific knowledge appear to be on a par: very little. His historical knowledge appears to be non-existant. The absence of all three creates severe analytical inability, which explains the latching onto populist plausible but untenable solutions. “Market-based solutions” for environmental problems is a nonsense too—they’re the modern “get rich quick” schemes. Those career choices indicate a good nose for “following the money” but a total inability to analyse the causes and ramifications of the problems and the supposed solutions.
The Medieval Warming produced crop surpluses which financed the building of cathedrals across Europe and paid for the Crusades. When the surplus disappeared, the Crusaders had to return home and the cathedrals took another few hundred years to complete. Other earlier warmings (eg: the Roman Warming) had similar easy times. Otherwise the Roman Empire would not have been able to expand as it did.
Plants, animals and people flourish when it’s warm. Cold is the enemy. Both warmings ended in cold times and significant economic and population contractions. The coolings brought significant storms, droughts and through these large crop failures. Anyone familiar with the history of the Little Ice Age will know of the crop failures, ergotism and witch hunts—all of which are prominent in the historical record. Let’s just hope the present solar minimum doesn’t bite our agriculture too hard.
But then, we all know that. Zwick et al obviously don’t. I’ve got the ideal job for Mr. Zwick: mounting a serious search for the Sun’s remote control … but he’ll have to organise a market-based solution to fund the search.

Eve says:
April 19, 2012 at 2:27 pm
“… None of this looks good on humanity.”
No, and let’s not forget what went on during the Little Ice Age, when certain humans were blamed for the advancing glaciers, and for the devastating (hail) storms that wiped out crops.
Witch hunts.
Human beings caused the bad weather by consorting with the devil, it was believed. Indeed, after prompting, many warlocks and witches confessed to this and all manner of demonic deeds, before being burned at the stake. If McKay is to be believed, in Europe, thousands upon thousands were put to the torch during this particular period of human madness. According to Wikipedia, the last report from Greenland, before the colony went silent, told of a witch being burned at the stake there.
~
In May 2011, I drove into the aftermath of a hail storm in E. Colorado that was piled up to several inches, and recently, an area near Austin got several feet of the icy balls. It’s not hard to imagine what these kinds of storms could do to crops.

I used to have a signature I used on one of the forums I frequented. It read:
“Global warming the next inquisition.”
I might have to go back to using it if this pattern of behavior keeps up, because this sort of speech is gateway to open persecution of people they disagree with.
So much for freedom of speech, presumption of innocence and a half dozen foundation concepts in our form of government.
Before you can persecute a group, you first have to marginalize and demonize them. Once that sort of marginalization and demonization becomes acceptable behavior the door is open for active discrimination and persecution.
Have any of these wacko’s read any history? Don’t the see that they are following a long established pattern that if allowed to run to its logical conclusion leads down a path toward the destruction of freedom of expression of everyone.
The scary scenario is that they have read history and know exactly what they are doing.
The benign scenario is that they are just self righteous idiots.
Just another example of how defective their education and moral code is. They are totalitarians at heart and cannot conceive of the possibility that they might be wrong about anything. Therefore all problems are the fault of someone else.

looking at the big picture, there’s one clear lesson that can be seen in this:
We’re winning, and the other side knows it. That’s why they’re getting desperate and shrill; they’ve lost on the science, they’ve lost the public’s attention, and they don’t know what to do except to stomp their widdo foots and promise to hold their breath til they turn blue.
But this is also why this fight is no longer scientific – that battle is over. The only real battle left is political, as they attempt to use political power to achieve what they couldn’t get the public to buy, and we must be vigilant and focused on defeating those efforts.

Sourcewatch: Steve Zwick
He considers himself more of a conduit than an expert, but is capable of speaking on: derivatives, sustainable development, and environmental finance. The latter includes payments for ecosystem services, payments for watershed services, wetland mitigation banking, water footprinting, biodiversity banking, and REDD.
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Steve_Zwick
Zwick is vicious, cos derivatives are at stake. at least the Markit guy knows “carbon credits” are not a “real commodity”:
2009: Ecosystemmarketplace: Steve Zwick: Markit: Gathering – and Mining – the Data for Tomorrow’s Ecosystem Marketplace
Markit: The New Gorilla of Environmental FinanceBacked by a consortium of investment banks, Markit has spent most of the last decade culling prices and other carefully-selected details from complex transactions on the books of secretive trading houses and then identifying the sweet spots where knowledgeable buyers and sellers overlap…
Zwick: Are you limiting this to carbon, or will you be moving into other ecosystem markets?
Niall Cameron, Markit’s Executive Vice President of Commodities, Indices, Equities and Risk Management,: Our registries side will be capturing credits from all kinds of projects, including wetland mitigation banking…
Obviously, carbon is the main market at the moment and will continue to be for a while, but going forward you can see many, many different types of environmental products being listed. That is when price is going to get very interesting, because there’s going to be a lack of knowledge about where some of these things should trade.
Zwick: Which market do you see taking off first after carbon?
Niall Cameron: We are interested in how the water market develops. Unlike carbon credits, water is a real commodity, and possibly the most important one in the world…

Dear Editors:
I am well known in the climate world for discussing and researching climate science, or what Steven Zwick calls “creating the lies”. About me, he says:

Is this what Forbes has come to, a platform for revenge on people that your writers might disagree with? Let my house burn? That is not freedom of speech, that is shouting “Fire” in a crowded theatre.

The task now it to make the Left own these guys as historically documented officially sponsored spokesmen for their political party, period. To stay objective about it only two quirks of unbridled human nature need be considered: social bubbles and psychological projection, both infantile and worthy of rightfully condescending pity at first, then of sharp mockery and dismissal.
That simple multi-century real thermometer records exist (along with a simple average if real tide gauges) that fully debunk AGW claims exist but have been sidelined by skeptics and warmists alike in favor of mutully emphasized arcane statistical nitpicking continues to mark this period as a mere bicker fest rather than a clear confrontation between fraud and common sense. Kids indoctrinated by Gore’s classroom movie will merely condem goofy old people rather than tell stories of heroes and villains, given that all the statistics involved offer an excuse that, well, things were uncertain, and at least one side cared enough to sound the alarm about dying polar bears.
Principled pacifism and sissified whining are silent whispers, politically. Be Brietbart!

And BTW, Mr. Zwick – honestly you’re the lad in denial – in denial of the scientific reality: global man made CO2 emissions do not and will not cause ‘catastrophic warming’ of our planet. The only man made thing about human induced global warming, is that the basic premise is a total fabrication and throughout history, men, particularly politicians have been and are well practiced in such ‘black arts’.
What would be good for you now Mr. Zwick is a self imposed long and glorious ‘omerta’ – silence is golden and remember; “when one finds oneself in a big hole, it’s best to cease forthwith further excavations”.

I believe that once they have consolidated power (raw political force) their words will be more than mere rhetoric; they will become reality. As I posted elsewhere at the time of the Gleick affair, we can expect many more of these embarrassing meltdowns. In the past those like Zwick who supported this hoax would be able to simply change their tune and move on to the next cause. We now live in the age of the Internet and I believe this to be a game changer. There will of course be new “Causes” involving words such as Bio-Justice, Social-Justice and Sustainability. However all the main players who would champion these causes are locked to their past involvement in the AGW hoax by the Internet. This in part explains the growing panic and desperation writ large in the recent Gleick and Zwick stupidity. Those involved in the hoax never considered the price of failure in the age of the Internet and they have no exit strategy. A fun Google game to play is to do a search for the language of vilification such as “denier”, “contrarian”, “big oil shill” or “flat earther” along with the name of any environmentalist, politician or journalist of the left or “High-Profile” climate scientist. The Internet will prevent a great many from simply moving on to the next “Cause”
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit,
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it
For the all those who promoted the hoax there will be tears. Sceptics will never forgive and the Internet will never forget.
PS. Folks should not worry about Zwick taking vigilante action as he is clearly armed with the Gleick 9mm. http://tinypic.com/r/20qyxsp/5

If they are going to play rough, then, here is the riposte. When the inevitable next mini (or not so mini) ice age comes, those who promoted the fallacy that the only type of climate change is warming, need to pay. I’d even take it a step further. Those negligent enough to spend civic monies on warming scenario contingency plans whilst neglecting cooling scenario contingency plans shall also have to pay. How they pay will of course be determined by the political systems and social conventions in place at such future dates.

Denier-central’s, peak sceptics at the IPCC beg to differ:
IPCC Special Report
Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX)
http://www.ipcc-wg2.gov/SREX/images/uploads/SREX-All_FINAL.pdf
Quoting:
———————-
4.5.3.3. Attribution of Impacts to Climate Change: Observations and Limitations

There is high confidence, based on high agreement and medium evidence, that economic losses from weather- and climate-related disasters have increased. A key question concerns whether trends in such losses, or losses from specific events, can be attributed to climate change. In this context, changes in losses over time need to be controlled for exposure and vulnerability. Most studies of long-term disaster loss records attribute these increases in losses to increasing exposure of people and assets in at-risk areas, and to underlying societal trends – demographic economic, political, and social – that shape vulnerability to impacts. Some authors suggest that a (natural or anthropogenic) climate change signal can be found in the records of disaster losses, but their work is in the nature of reviews and commentary rather than empirical research.
———–
In plain language; there is no physical evidence that climate change has anything to do with losses from natural disasters; the so-called “extreme events”.

The scenario I fear the most is a crash in photosynthesis. Many things can cause it however, at the current low CO2 level, any such thing or combination of things thereof does not have to be very extreme to cause it. For example, a sudden reduction in incoming solar flux in the middle frequency band. The biosphere can tolerate such a reduction a lot better at 1000 ppm than at 3 or 400 PPM. This is basic ecology.

This seems to be a new tactic among the climate extremists: incite violence against the skeptics. NASA employee James Hansen has been doing a lot of this lately. Here’s an article from ABC News where Bill Blakemore sets out his case for skeptics being guilty of “crimes against humanity”. Blakemore goes so far as to say that his equating climate skepticism with the Nazi Holocaust is not something he does lightly but rather results from his ” extensive study and forethought”.

In Australia a warmist and Government advisor Prof Tim Flannery made a number of statements regarding Global Warming/Climate Change. These follow:
In 2005, Flannery predicted Sydney’s dams could be dry in as little as two years because global warming was drying up the rains, leaving the city “facing extreme difficulties with water”.
Check Sydney’s dam levels today: 73 per cent. Hmm. Not a good start.
In 2008, Flannery said: “The water problem is so severe for Adelaide that it may run out of water by early 2009.”
Check Adelaide’s water storage levels today: 77 per cent.
In 2007, Flannery predicted cities such as Brisbane would never again have dam-filling rains, as global warming had caused “a 20 per cent decrease in rainfall in some areas” and made the soil too hot, “so even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and river systems … “.
Check the Murray-Darling system today: in flood. Check Brisbane’s dam levels: 100 per cent full.
All this may seem funny, but some politicians, voters and investors have taken this kind of warming alarmism very seriously and made expensive decisions in the belief it was sound.
The problem is the climate steadfastly refuses to cooperate with Prof Flannery. Both Queensland and NSW State Governments built water delsalination plants costing billions of dollars on the strength of these pronouncements, neither has been used to any extent. The Queensland floods received worldwide news coverage.
Perhaps Mr Zwick you would consider a refund of scarce taxpayer funds for the cost of these white elephants.

In his frustration at not having been able to seize control of government power and policy as he had supposed his AGW agenda should have enabled, Mr. Zwick betrays what he would have done if he and his fellow travelers HAD managed to seize political power and control. He would have launched a vendictive campaign of punishment and retribution against his “enemies”. (We know who you are and we know where you live.) Anyone who suspected “ulterior motive” in Mr. Zwick’s irrational promotion of the AGW agenda should now be satisfied the man has, in his agonnized state, unwittingly provided the answer.

April 19, 2012 7:54 pm

I don’t buy into supporting hate rants. I sent this to the Forbes staff:

This is one of the most frightening articles I have ever read!
Surely Forbes Magazine does not support authors using the pages of Forbes to preach hate and acts of violence against people?
Mr. Zwick justifies his rationale on a number of false pretenses. Let’s take his statement “A recent poll by Yale and George Mason Universities shows that most Americans are at or near that point on climate change, with 72% of us seeing a link between extreme weather and our own actions. It’s a link that climate models have long predicted, and with the benefit of hindsight we see that even the earliest models have proven accurate over time.”
There is not one single accurate statement in that paragraph, none! His so called recent poll by Yale and George surveyed a grand total of 1008 adults. From this miniscule sampling Mr. Zwick uses impressive statements like “…most Americans…, with 72% of us seeing a link…”
Yet Mr. Zwick uses his imaginary justifications to state things like “We know who the active denialists are – not the people who buy the lies, mind you, but the people who create the lies. Let’s start keeping track of them now, and when the famines come, let’s make them pay. Let’s let their houses burn. Let’s swap their safe land for submerged islands. Let’s force them to bear the cost of rising food prices”
Will Forbes support the issuance of official green uniforms to people who Mr. Zwick believes are properly supporting his program of horror against innocent people? Germany started their fascism campaign by making the brown shirt volunteers their initial enforcers. Kristallnacht or night of the broken glass was a pogrom against the Jewish in Germany and Austria conducted by the SA Stormtroopers, also known as the brown shirts.
Freedom of speech is a mighty weapon of America in keeping our people free. There are few occasions when freedom of speech should be curtailed, but there are more occasions when our press should not support certain expressions of speech. Advocation of hate, hurt, or vicious retribution are expressions that Forbes should never support or allow under a Forbes header.
I believe that if people like Mr. Zwick want to preach about the end of days, they can make their own placards and wander up and down the street wearing their placards calling out “The end is coming!”. I wouldn’t be surprised that given fair warning, most Americans will cross to the other side of the street and avoid eye contact.
Disappointed,

J.Hansford

There day will come, retribution for the worst of the Chicken Little Brigade that have perpetrated this climate change bulloney. People like the geek Gleick that this Zwick reminds me of. And Zwick himself. There’s going to be a conservative avalanche soon, politically, and the temperatures are going to continue to drop, and the agw nonsense is going to be seen more and more as little more than puffed up malarkey, born of criminal and ideologically driven deception. “If these hypocrites lived in sustainable mud huts and rode to work on horse driven carts and made their own clothes and used the services of the local witch doctor or the power of prayer when illness strikes, if they shunned all the luxuries of the industrial world then I might listen…

If they really did live that type of “sustainable” lifestyle, we wouldn’t have to listen to them for long. They would be living a stone age existence that typically ended before age 35! Plus, they would have no electronic communications, which means no more television or internet rants from them.
One can only hope that these hypocrites would really embrace the “simple” lifestyle. The rest of us could have some peace and quiet for awhile. While they would be learning (through deprivation) the true value of living in an industrialized world!
(Just in case I was not clear, I do not want them to die early. I only want them to learn that living their supposedly preferred, sustainable lifestyle would be painful, brutal, disease plagued, short, monotonous and no fun.)

This is damage limitation. Starvation is coming but not from climate effects. It will be from lack of access to affordable energy which will severly limit food production and distribution alied to vast areas of food producing land diverted to biofuel production. They will also blame reduced crops on global warming caused by excess CO2 when the true picture is climate change due to perfectly natural GLOBAL COOLING. To my mind THEY are preparing for the riots to come and are directing the focus for the resulting anger.

Time and again we find CAGW evangelists unable to recognise their own totalitarian tendencies and Mr Zwick is just another sad example of that species. It’s outrageous that he should, in effect, incite hate-crimes against those who’s opinions he does not share, but as climate sceptics we should pity him and forgive him his bad judgement and basest instincts. After all, we can rise above this and hopefully keep setting a good example. And as others here have said, we should most definitely make no attempt to silence him or his evangelical peers – as true believers in free speech, we need these people to be heard by as many as possible. Only then can the moral and intellectual poverty of their arguments be exposed for the dangerous propaganda that it so clearly is.

Education
Zwick attended Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern Unversity. Additionally, he has studied various courses at Loyola University and University of Illinois at Chicago.

April 20, 2012 1:18 am

Gleick was so disturbed by his alarm over CO2 that he was driven to criminal actions. Zwick is also disturbed by alarm over CO2 and has been driven to encouraging criminal actions (albeit sneakily worded in a passive sense of ‘let them burn’ – a distinction that may well be lost on any sociopath inspired by him).
Yet there is virtually no evidence that CO2 deserves any alarm at all. We know past levels were relatively low compared to what plants thrive on. We know levels rise in a lagged response to warmer spells. We know we have had such a warmer spell in the MWP. We know we have probably had a modest overall warming over the past 150 years.
We can even admit that human emissions of CO2 could account for much of the observed rise in ambient levels at Mauna Loa, and we can even admit that this rise may lead to a modest warming – 1C of less per doubling. No cause for alarm there, only rejoicing that we may see easier times ahead with less climatic stress (compare and contrast MWP with LIA – which would you rather have lived in from that point of view?).
Only in the computer models do we find displayed a positive feedback which gives cause for alarm to some: those who want to be alarmed, those who find it advantageous to be alarmed, and those who think that these models deserve to be taken very seriously indeed. Mother Nature does not seem to be in that last category. There is a fourth category – those so affected by the alarm of others that they get driven to crazy thoughts and actions.

Open Letter to Mr Steve Zwick.
Dear Sir,
I read your essay with considerable interest. However, it seems to me to be rather one-sided.
On the basis of quid pro quo and so forth, how about (by way of suggestion only) we even things up a bit.
How about we start by setting a time-scale: say up to 2020. This gives you another 8 years for the catastrophic predictions you seem to be so fond of to be verified. If these occur, you win.
The return bet though is that every research cent which has ever been spent on published catastrophic modelling, where the model has proven to be invalid/inadequate/misleading is to be repaid. Every single cent of it. Which means you lose the bet.
And to make things a little more interesting, how about (in poker terminology) a raise – interest on those research £/$/A$/Can$ etc from the date the funding was allocated to the end date for the bet. You can fund that part, that’s your stake. It’s good to keep an interest – and you seem very sure of your ground, so how could you refuse?
Let me state unequivocally that as I am a salaried employee in a financial services company which has no involvement in any aspect of “Big Oil” etc, and am in receipt of precisely Zero “Big Whatever” funds, I am (was) an entirely detached observer. I have read a considerable amount on both sides of the debate – I have a chemistry degree, and therefore have been thoroughly trained in the scientific method.
Until such time as any of the teams developing these wonderfully complex climate “models” are able to demonstrate:
a) the model runs on data – unadjusted, untampered, and most of all published
b) the modelling programs’ code is published and subjected to INDEPENDENT validation
the alarming conclusions must be treated with a pinch of salt.
There is so much contradictory information, that simply insulting everybody who raises the finger of innocent enquiry utterly destroys both your integrity and your reputation.
As a further and completely radical suggestion, how about a full, open and honest debate – or would this worry you too much?
Yours
Adam Nottage

Often they meet with resistance, usually from those who have something to gain from the disaster or what led to the disaster. The heros do not wish evil on the resisters. They try to help them. Often the resisters do wish evil on the heros. So, who fits which role in this SciFi story of Catastrophic Man Made Global Warming … er … Climate Change?”

OK Zwick, lets have it your way and cut the emissions. What’s going to happen?
Well, the lights are gonna go out, followed by your heating/air-con. Your desktop PC is gonna stop straight away followed by your lappy 2 or 3 hours later. Your cell phone is going to tell you ‘No Network’ for a day or 2 before it dies. Landline will die about the same time. After a couple of days your fridge and freezers are going to stink to high heaven. You and the kids are going to be hungry. Your car wont start. There’ll be nothing in the shops when you do walk there and besides, your credit/debit cards wont work. After just 3 days you will be living below the level of a hobo.
But, hey, at least the polar bears will be safe.
Or will they?, Just like Schroedinger’s Cat, there will be no way to check on them without releasing some of those dreadful emissions and killing them. So you will have to exist in a state of ignorance regards the polar bears.
So why bother going to all that grief as its obvious you already in that happy state.

“Environmentalism has become a global ideology that covers all of existence—not merely modes of production but ways of life as well. We rediscover in it the whole range of Marxist rhetoric, now applied to the environment: ubiquitous scientism, horrifying visions of reality, even admonitions to the guilty parties who misunderstand those who wish them well. Authors, journalists, politicians, and scientists compete in the portrayal of abomination and claim for themselves a hyper-lucidity: they alone see clearly while others vegetate in the darkness….One consequence of this certainty is that we begin to suspect that the numberless Cassandras who prophesy all around us do not intend to warn us so much as to condemn us. In classical Judaism, the prophet sought to give new life to God’s cause against kings and the powerful. In Christianity, millenarian movements embodied a hope for justice against a Church wallowing in luxury and vice. But in a secular society, a prophet has no function other than indignation. So it happens that he becomes intoxicated with his own words and claims a legitimacy with no basis, calling down the destruction that he pretends to warn against. You’ll get what you’ve got coming!—that is the death wish that our misanthropes address to us. These are not great souls who alert us to troubles but tiny minds who wish us suffering if we have the presumption to refuse to listen to them. Catastrophe is not their fear but their joy. It is a short distance from lucidity to bitterness, from prediction to anathema.”

April 20, 2012 6:26 am

Thanks so much for info. And for the humor.
I’m not a scientist, but I like to read here, even when I don’t completely understand the technical data. A major problem, in my opinion, is what someone called Zwick–the “conduit.” Americans are getting some of the messaging from the realist camp, but frankly, when you write about climate change for a general news site, you learn a few things. Even if you write a balanced, non-polemic, it’s not likely news aggregators will pick up the story. The lid is so tight on the messaging that I’ve often wondered if some of the reporters and editors are (as in the 1970s when government placed individuals at certain mags, etc.) being paid to advocate.
The other thing you learn is that while Main Street may fume about the taxes and the “skyrocketing” electricity rates, Main Street has yet to fully connect the CAGW policies to the negative financial impact.
The other thing you learn is that we’ve come full circle.A sizable segment of the academic world (not just in physical science) is returning to animism based on consensus science. As a poet, I may infer the soul of the tree. As a realist who grew up in a rural area where people grew what we ate (in spite of an often wicked Mother Nature), I saw a wide range of fluctuations in weather. I think there’s a serious disconnect between many of these academics and the real natural world. best to all, KBD

Hmmmm…from looking at him and Mann and Hansen I had a revelation, baldness causes global warming.
==============================================
Whoa! Hold on there! Think this through! It’s like CO2 increases raising temperatures. One scientist here (on WUWT) commented about the last (slight) cooling phase of 1940 – 1975 as being “back when I had hair.”
I had hair back then, too. There’s your evidence! Global warming causes baldness—not the other way round.
=========================================================
Clearly, shining craniums increase the Earth’s albedo. This may cause a negative feedback to CO2 forcings. This may have caused the temperature to remain constant over the last decade. This feedback was not included in the IPCC models. It’s absence explains why the IPCC temperature forecasts are consistently higher than reality.

Last year, we had an election here in Ontario, Canada. Our Liberal premier (like a state govenor) has drank the green koolaid and pretty much everything out of his mouth is something to do with green: power, jobs, etc. He closed our coal-fired plants, and sure enough, our power rates are going up in May. Oh well.
One of the most craven political things he did during the election was cancel a gas-powered plant (see above re: closing coal) in a riding (i.e., electoral district) that he needed to win. He did pick up those seats, so it must have worked.
At the time, I asked one of his supporters: “should we just route the brown- and blackouts through these towns now? Seems fair, they should pay first…”. No response, obviously. There never is.
BTW, I grew up in Northern Ontario, and a company wants to put a new hydro-electric dam in a pretty, touristy area. I don’t have to tell you the opposition has been fierce. But, as with the Kennedys fighting wind turbines off Kennebunkport, the fight is being led by the same people who demand clean energy. Do they EVER smell the hypocrisy?

But, taking Zwick’s lead, we SHOULD track the frauds and dishonest “climate scientists” for their lies and complicity in supporting a multi-trillion dollar scam. When the IPCC and AGW scam collapses, they should all be prosecuted and stripped of their credentials. That’s not an attack, it’s not being mean, it’s what we do when people are dishonest, malicious, fraudulent, and just plain stealing people’s money and damaging economies. Furthermore, they are killing people in the process. The increased cost of food due to biofuels is killing people—all warmist scientists support the junk science that supports this stupid enterprise—they are all complicit.

It’s snake oil showtime when they pretend that the ETs are really bending your spoons; then you get Uri Geller and Erich von Daniken. And when the authors have to believe in the charade (or at the least pretend to believe), you get things like communism. Or AGW.

I see he has upped the percentage, and confined it to “Climate Scientists”…so let’s see. That’s about ten or so, or maybe twelve if you add folksy oddballs like Norgaard & Suzuki. So he’s dealing with a fraction of a person somewhere…..

This is an image of a pagan immolation of an effigy of man. Look at how many 21st century people are in attendance! Real people, in this day and age, are participating in such witchy activity, in my view, practicing for and preparing themselves to be, putting living people in the inferno….as a sacrifice to the green god.
Sounds extreme? I think the burning man green language from Steve Zwick in Forbes is extreme. And he claims to be rational?
People…. the whole AGW Al Gore pagan green religion is invested in this and they will not be satisfied until human blood is spilled in the name of their god. If you doubt that, what makes these green god people any different that the pagans of old. They have clearly walked away from reason and abandoned science for politics and mob rule.

I’ve been at Forbes for awhile, and Steve would rarely receive much traffic, because he’s basically a science illiterate and buffoon.
But now with the WUWT publicity, he has some 12 pages of comments. Steve is the equivalent of a radio “shock jock”. While his statements are outrageous, and downright scary, I think in the long run it is better to ignore him. Nothing we say will change his mind. And the more “traffic” he receives at Forbes, the better for him. I’m sure he loves all the attention he is receiving.

To me it appears James Hansen is professionally responsible for some fundamental ideas that instigate the hatemongering of people like Mr. Zwick. Hansen, as head of NASA’s GISS, has promoted consistently in public the idea his critics have committed radical immoral actions (against mankind) by their open critical discourse on Hansen’s version of climate science; where Hansen’s version of climate science is consistent with the ideologically/politically motivated CAGW science that is the basis of the problematic IPCC. Hansen has implied a sanction for physical punishment on critics of his science by his explicit public statements that those critics made (by their criticism) profound and radical immoral acts against all mankind. The Zwicks of the world have used Hansen’s ideas of the profound moral guilt of CAGW climate science critics as a basis to clearly and openly advocate violence against such critics. Zwick is just being a faithful Hansen indoctrinated minion.
I suggest more discussion about whether the disturbing ideas of James Hansen (head of NASA’s GISS), which attribute profoundly radical immoral acts to his critics, are the ideas that form the fundamental basis of the violent ideas being shouted by Zwick (and those like him).

@James Bull. “Is it a requirement that these people all have similar hair and beard styles…”
James, you’ve hit on something that is bigger than meets the eye. Take the geek Gleick and over-emotive Zwick. The superficial outward similarity of appearance is weird, they certainly are conformists to some sort of unkempt “eccentric leftist intellectual” standard. They make a big huff about how they strive to lead the “simple” life, just as the hippies and econuts have dreamed of for decades.
Obama’s Science Czar John Holdren, as far back as 1973, expressed the rational front for the dream of these eccentric “simple life leftists” that dominate the Chicken Little Brigade. Holdren wrote that we need to create “a low consumption economy… with an equitable distribution of wealth.” There’s something a bit sterile about this dim vision. Yet, there is in fact, though infrequently expressed, a passion behind … it all. As Stewart Brand of the Whole Earth Catalogue put it, “We have wished, we ecofreaks, for a disaster… to bomb us into the stone age, where we might live like [American] Indians, with our localism, our appropriate technology, our gardens, our homemade religion.”
Eccentric bearded intellectual neurotic leftist nuts, not dedicated impartial non-partisan scientists.
They have a bizarre dream, and 83% CO2 cuts by 2050 as passed in U.S. House in 2009 was meant to bring that dream to fruition. They’ll stop at nothing, even burning our houses down, to see their dream of the simple life imposed on everyone else.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a “nice simple life” as the over-intellectual leftists freaks envision. No, wholesale cuts in economic production as dictated by the radical draconian cap & trades schemes would be a precursor to societal collapse on an apocalyptic scale. I’ll spare you the details this time. But feel free to imagine it.

At some stage the climate catastrophists, alarmists or doomsayers, call them what you will, will be proved to be wrong and future generations will look back at this time with the same hilarity as the aliens in the Smash ads did at peeling potatoes and wonder how so many people could have been duped for so long at such expense. The edifice of AGW alarmism is crumbling with every passing day and the behaviour of Zwick will only hasten that day. However if we surrender freedom of speech in the pursuit of climate realism we will all lose. Allow Zwick, Mann, Hansen et al make fools of themselves as often as possible but let’s not take the road of censorship. It may be very difficult to regain free speech when it is lost.

Here’s a perfect description of Zwick and his ilk: “You’ll get what you’ve got coming! That is the death wish that our misanthropes address to us. These are not great souls who alert us to troubles but tiny minds who wish us suffering if we have the presumption to refuse to listen to them. Catastrophe is not their fear but their joy. It is a short distance from lucidity to bitterness, from prediction to anathema.”

Can I please trade my current land for “sunken island property”? Right now my house is worth about 30% less than it was 5 years ago, while unimproved property on the Maldives is going for over $50 a square foot. And that’s for beachfront property less than half a meter above current sea level. Gosh, for land that’s about to be consumed by the sea, they’re making some awfully good money. I wonder how much Al Gore has purchased?

Zwick doesn’t believe in gwarming? Oh, is it “climate change?” I’m not sure really if your comment is sensical. But based simply on the crazy rant of his article he just penned, he’s a nutcase. At least you didn’t say that you yourself look like Zwick, but we can say there is a ‘consensus’ that he has the eccentric look like his radical chum from Berkeley, the geekish Gleick. One of the comments in the article http://www.forbes.com/sites/warrenmeyer/2012/04/19/a-vivid-reminder-of-how-the-climate-debate-is-broken/ reference the fact that his suggestions violate several aspects of DC law,as his business is run from the DC area, and seeing that they have a Virginia area code,I’d assume the same would apply there as well. There are also criminal penalties for making a terrorist threat, and for conspiracy to the same. Here’s a tip – calling for people in writing to take an action or omit an action that would result in the burning of private or public property IS conspiracy. It’s not commentary or opinion, it’s asking people to allow or cause the destruction by fire.

April 22, 2012 12:57 pm

Uhh, Zwick? Your hero, Al Gore, owns a mansion in Florida. Did you know that there is no place in Florida over sixty miles from the ocean? Did you know that if every polar ice cap and glacier on God’s green earth melted, Florida would be gone entirely?
Why, then, is your Prophet snatching up big time real-estate in a doomed area? -and why does Al Gore fly in a huge private jet? -and why isn’t he answering these important questions?
I have no problem about buying mansions in Florida or flying around in private jets that you earned. I DO, however, have SERIOUS PROBLEMS about someone that has earned and can afford such luxuries telling ME not to drive to some place or to buy mercury hazards instead of incandescent lamps.
