Wow, it doesn’t get much uglier than this. In my opinion, this is hate speech. Steve Zwick writes in his Forbes column:

Let’s start keeping track of them now, and when the famines come, let’s make them pay. Let’s let their houses burn. Let’s swap their safe land for submerged islands. Let’s force them to bear the cost of rising food prices.
They broke the climate. Why should the rest of us have to pay for it?
People who doubt the magnitude of CO2/AGW driven climate change broke the climate?
I suppose then that Mr. Zwick has never driven a car, never taken an airplane trip, never heated or cooled his home, never bought products produced overseas and shipped here, never grilled at a BBQ, or never used electricity to power his computer to write his litany of hate for Forbes. No, he’s apparently not used any CO2 producing modern convenience at all, which is why he bizarrely believes he has some sort of moral high ground.

It looks like the global warming wars are turning into hate crimes. I was on think progress the other day. The warmists are cheering the tornado damage in red states. One Australian said he was happy when there were disasters in areas that did not believe in global warming/climate change. None of this looks good on humanity.
I feel nothing but pity for poor Zwick. What a sad person he is.
Like I said before, it’s sad that the alarmists are making everyone not want a warmer climate. The alarmists don’t want it because they think the world will end. And skeptics don’t want it because it shows how foolish the alarmists assertions are. Yet, I want a warmer climate. I think it’s ridiculous that there’s still ice on this planet which wouldn’t take much at all when we consider cosmic scales to have the entire planet frozen over and these guys want it colder? Also, at below 200 ppm, there isn’t enough CO2 to keep plants alive. We’re on the low end of the spectrum. If we take up Steve Zwick on his offer, then mountainous regions are his and coastal lands are ours, right? RIGHT?
He’s making a list, is he checking it twice? he’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice, the anti-Santa is coming to town,.

If you look at the typical profile of a denier, you will find most of them are old, white men (just think of the Koch brothers and the rest of the 1%) who won’t be around, and certainly don’t want to be around when the fire catches hold. They are also most likely to have enough money to protect themselves, or their descendents to some extent as well. I suspect that some of them are also psychopaths with no sense of empathy toward others.
As ever, it’s the 99% who will suffer the most severe burns and it is this 99% who need to be persuaded to stop burning fossil fuels as we are all pouring gas on the fire right now. When the spark ignites we can be sure that the deniers will be long gone to their islands and bunkers.
So what can we do? Apart from reducing our individual impacts we can cooperate with those around us to build communities which can become resilient to disasters through things like local farming, local production, education and repair and innovation centers. We need to walk away from the lifestyle that is helping to burn down our houses.

I have to stick up for Forbes a bit here. Forbes asked me to blog on their site a couple of years ago. In that time, they have exercised no editorial control over what I do, and I presume over what Mr. Zwick does. Forbes isn’t endorsing his views in any way, even by allowing them to remain posted. Nor do they, I am pretty sure, moderate comments except maybe for profanity. The author can do that, and if comments are disappearing, blame Zwick, not Forbes. Forbes is just offering the platform, and is obviously seeking writers from all sides of the political spectrum.
I agree with an earlier poster – please,please, let’s not take away these folks’ platform to speak. Every time they say crazy stuff like this hurts their cause. In May 2011, I drove into the aftermath of a hail storm in E. Colorado that was piled up to several inches, and recently, an area near Austin got several feet of the icy balls. It’s not hard to imagine what these kinds of storms could do to crops.
I used to have a signature I used on one of the forums I frequented. It read:
“Global warming the next inquisition.”
I might have to go back to using it if this pattern of behavior keeps up, because this sort of speech is gateway to open persecution of people they disagree with.
So much for freedom of speech, presumption of innocence and a half dozen foundation concepts in our form of government.
Before you can persecute a group, you first have to marginalize and demonize them. Once that sort of marginalization and demonization becomes acceptable behavior the door is open for active discrimination and persecution.

@juanslayton, I am a former Fire Chief and have very serious concerns regarding his comments about burning houses down. In fact, it would be wise to look into suspicious fire activity where he served as in some cases (unfortunately), firefighters are also arsonists. His comment raises deep concerns and may be considered unlawful (seriously so) under new laws.

In my part of the country – and I mean Country – that would be a big mistake. We have a little thing called the Castle Doctrine around here that tends to discourage that kind of behavior – Permanently.

I believe that once they have consolidated power (raw political force) their words will be more than mere rhetoric; they will become reality. As I posted elsewhere at the time of the Gleick affair, we can expect many more of these embarrassing meltdowns. In the past those like Zwick who supported this hoax would be able to simply change their tune and move on to the next cause. We now live in the age of the Internet and I believe this to be a game changer. There will of course be new “Causes” involving words such as Bio-Justice, Social-Justice and Sustainability. However all the main players who would champion these causes are locked to their past involvement in the AGW hoax by the Internet. This in part explains the growing panic and desperation writ large in the recent Gleick and Zwick stupidity. Those involved in the hoax never considered the price of failure in the age of the Internet and they have no exit strategy. This woman argued that, since babies will eventually grow up and produce C02 (essentially), parents shouldn’t be allowed to have any UNLESS they could PROVE they were WORTHY. When the inevitable next mini (or not so mini) ice age comes, those who promoted the fallacy that the only type of climate change is warming, need to pay. I’d even take it a step further. Those negligent enough to spend civic monies on warming scenario contingency plans whilst neglecting cooling scenario contingency plans shall also have to pay. How they pay will of course be determined by the political systems and social conventions in place at such future dates.

The scenario I fear the most is a crash in photosynthesis. Many things can cause it however, at the current low CO2 level, any such thing or combination of things thereof does not have to be very extreme to cause it. For example, a sudden reduction in incoming solar flux in the middle frequency band. The biosphere can tolerate such a reduction a lot better at 1000 ppm than at 3 or 400 PPM. This is basic ecology.
This seems to be a new tactic among the climate extremists: incite violence against the skeptics. NASA employee James Hansen has been doing a lot of this lately. Here’s an article from ABC News where Bill Blakemore sets out his case for skeptics being guilty of “crimes against humanity”. Blakemore goes so far as to say that his equating climate skepticism with the Nazi Holocaust is not something he does lightly but rather results from his ” extensive study and forethought”.
These people have lost all sense of proportion.

Check Adelaide’s water storage levels today: 77 per cent.
In 2007, Flannery predicted cities such as Brisbane would never again have dam-filling rains, as global warming had caused “a 20 per cent decrease in rainfall in some areas” and made the soil too hot, “so even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and river systems … “.
Check the Murray-Darling system today: in flood. Check Brisbane’s dam levels: 100 per cent full.
All this may seem funny, but some politicians, voters and investors have taken this kind of warming alarmism very seriously and made expensive decisions in the belief it was sound.
The problem is the climate steadfastly refuses to cooperate with Prof Flannery. Both Queensland and NSW State Governments built water delsalination plants costing billions of dollars on the strength of these pronouncements, neither has been used to any extent. The Queensland floods received worldwide news coverage.
Perhaps Mr Zwick you would consider a refund of scarce taxpayer funds for the cost of these white elephants.

Here in Alberta a provincial election is days away. If they really did live that type of “sustainable” lifestyle, we wouldn’t have to listen to them for long. They would be living a stone age existence that typically ended before age 35! Plus, they would have no electronic communications, which means no more television or internet rants from them.
One can only hope that these hypocrites would really embrace the “simple” lifestyle. The rest of us could have some peace and quiet for awhile. While they would be learning (through deprivation) the true value of living in an industrialized world!

This is damage limitation. Starvation is coming but not from climate effects. It will be from lack of access to affordable energy which will severly limit food production and distribution alied to vast areas of food producing land diverted to biofuel production. They will also blame reduced crops on global warming caused by excess CO2 when the true picture is climate change due to perfectly natural GLOBAL COOLING. To my mind THEY are preparing for the riots to come and are directing the focus for the resulting anger.

If you changed the topic, this could be a diatribe against the jews in Germany pre 1939 and again could be the theme for the anti communist propaganda in the States after WW2. Time and again we find CAGW evangelists unable to recognise their own totalitarian tendencies and Mr Zwick is just another sad example of that species. It’s outrageous that he should, in effect, incite hate-crimes against those who’s opinions he does not share, but as climate sceptics we should pity him and forgive him his bad judgement and basest instincts. After all, we can rise above this and hopefully keep setting a good example. And as others here have said, we should most definitely make no attempt to silence him or his evangelical peers – as true believers in free speech, we need these people to be heard by as many as possible. Zwick attended Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern Unversity. Additionally, he has studied various courses at Loyola University and University of Illinois at Chicago.
Gleick was so disturbed by his alarm over CO2 that he was driven to criminal actions. Zwick is also disturbed by alarm over CO2 and has been driven to encouraging criminal actions (albeit sneakily worded in a passive sense of ‘let them burn’ – a distinction that may well be lost on any sociopath inspired by him).
Yet there is virtually no evidence that CO2 deserves any alarm at all. We know past levels were relatively low compared to what plants thrive on. We know levels rise in a lagged response to warmer spells. We know we have had such a warmer spell in the MWP. We know we have probably had a modest overall warming over the past 150 years.
We can even admit that human emissions of CO2 could account for much of the observed rise in ambient levels at Mauna Loa, and we can even admit that this rise may lead to a modest warming – 1C of less per doubling. No cause for alarm there, only rejoicing that we may see easier times ahead with less climatic stress (compare and contrast MWP with LIA – which would you rather have lived in from that point of view?).
Only in the computer models do we find displayed a positive feedback which gives cause for alarm to some: those who want to be alarmed, those who find it advantageous to be alarmed, and those who think that these models deserve to be taken very seriously indeed. Mother Nature does not seem to be in that last category. There is a fourth category – those so affected by the alarm of others that they get driven to crazy thoughts and actions.
He would be arrested in Europe for inciting a riot and then get let off with a warming!

A few weeks ago I posted a comment on another site, pointing out how much warmer the Arctic / Earth was, during the Holocene Climate Optimum… the person wrote back that they ‘did not want politics on their page.
The stupidity of that person is appalling. It only served to point up why I believe this is going to take a VERY long time for this idiocy to end- they’ve poisoned the minds of at least one entire generation, and we’ll be paying the consequences of that for decades.
As a regular visitor to this site I am surprised and disappointed to see you encouraging people to complain about Zwick in an effort to curtail free speech. I think that is more disgraceful than anything Zwick said.

And since when is being surprised that a magazine publishes something “an attempt to curtail free speech”? Open Letter to Mr Steve Zwick.
Dear Sir,
I read your essay with considerable interest. However, it seems to me to be rather one-sided.
On the basis of quid pro quo and so forth, how about (by way of suggestion only) we even things up a bit.
How about we start by setting a time-scale: say up to 2020. This gives you another 8 years for the catastrophic predictions you seem to be so fond of to be verified. If these occur, you win.
The return bet though is that every research cent which has ever been spent on published catastrophic modelling, where the model has proven to be invalid/inadequate/misleading is to be repaid. Every single cent of it. Which means you lose the bet.
And to make things a little more interesting, how about (in poker terminology) a raise – interest on those research £/$/A$/Can$ etc from the date the funding was allocated to the end date for the bet. You can fund that part, that’s your stake. It’s good to keep an interest – and you seem very sure of your ground, so how could you refuse?
Let me state unequivocally that as I am a salaried employee in a financial services company which has no involvement in any aspect of “Big Oil” etc, and am in receipt of precisely Zero “Big Whatever” funds, I am (was) an entirely detached observer. I have read a considerable amount on both sides of the debate – I have a chemistry degree, and therefore have been thoroughly trained in the scientific method.
Until such time as any of the teams developing these wonderfully complex climate “models” are able to demonstrate:
a) the model runs on data – unadjusted, untampered, and most of all published
b) the modelling programs’ code is published and subjected to INDEPENDENT validation
the alarming conclusions must be treated with a pinch of salt.
There is so much contradictory information, that simply insulting everybody who raises the finger of innocent enquiry utterly destroys both your integrity and your reputation.
As a further and completely radical suggestion, how about a full, open and honest debate – or would this worry you too much?

I’m not a scientist, but I like to read here, even when I don’t completely understand the technical data. A major problem, in my opinion, is what someone called Zwick–the “conduit.” Americans are getting some of the messaging from the realist camp, but frankly, when you write about climate change for a general news site, you learn a few things. Even if you write a balanced, non-polemic, it’s not likely news aggregators will pick up the story. The lid is so tight on the messaging that I’ve often wondered if some of the reporters and editors are (as in the 1970s when government placed individuals at certain mags, etc.) being paid to advocate.
The other thing you learn is that while Main Street may fume about the taxes and the “skyrocketing” electricity rates, Main Street has yet to fully connect the CAGW policies to the negative financial impact.
The other thing you learn is that we’ve come full circle.A sizable segment of the academic world (not just in physical science) is returning to animism based on consensus science. As a poet, I may infer the soul of the tree. As a realist who grew up in a rural area where people grew what we ate (in spite of an often wicked Mother Nature), I saw a wide range of fluctuations in weather. I think there’s a serious disconnect between many of these academics and the real natural world. best to all, KBD

Last year, we had an election here in Ontario, Canada. Our Liberal premier (like a state govenor) has drank the green koolaid and pretty much everything out of his mouth is something to do with green: power, jobs, etc. He closed our coal-fired plants, and sure enough, our power rates are going up in May. Oh well.
One of the most craven political things he did during the election was cancel a gas-powered plant (see above re: closing coal) in a riding (i.e., electoral district) that he needed to win. He did pick up those seats, so it must have worked.
At the time, I asked one of his supporters: “should we just route the brown- and blackouts through these towns now? Seems fair, they should pay first…”. No response, obviously. There never is.
BTW, I grew up in Northern Ontario, and a company wants to put a new hydro-electric dam in a pretty, touristy area. I don’t have to tell you the opposition has been fierce. But, as with the Kennedys fighting wind turbines off Kennebunkport, the fight is being led by the same people who demand clean energy. Do they EVER smell the hypocrisy?

I’ve been at Forbes for awhile, and Steve would rarely receive much traffic, because he’s basically a science illiterate and buffoon.
But now with the WUWT publicity, he has some 12 pages of comments. Steve is the equivalent of a radio “shock jock”. While his statements are outrageous, and downright scary, I think in the long run it is better to ignore him. Nothing we say will change his mind. And the more “traffic” he receives at Forbes, the better for him. I’m sure he loves all the attention he is receiving.
But the famines have already come and many have already connected the dots.
Only its Zwick and his ilk that have caused the appearance of those famines by driving up the food prices because of their blind hatred of petroleum.

We have all of the ammunition we need. For crying out loud, when Hansen gave the 1988 testimony, they opened with windows and turned the a/c off. None of them have anything to say about this point.
To me it appears James Hansen is professionally responsible for some fundamental ideas that instigate the hatemongering of people like Mr. Zwick. Hansen, as head of NASA’s GISS, has promoted consistently in public the idea his critics have committed radical immoral actions (against mankind) by their open critical discourse on Hansen’s version of climate science; where Hansen’s version of climate science is consistent with the ideologically/politically motivated CAGW science that is the basis of the problematic IPCC. Hansen has implied a sanction for physical punishment on critics of his science by his explicit public statements that those critics made (by their criticism) profound and radical immoral acts against all mankind. The Zwicks of the world have used Hansen’s ideas of the profound moral guilt of CAGW climate science critics as a basis to clearly and openly advocate violence against such critics. Zwick is just being a faithful Hansen indoctrinated minion.
I suggest more discussion about whether the disturbing ideas of James Hansen (head of NASA’s GISS), which attribute profoundly radical immoral acts to his critics, are the ideas that form the fundamental basis of the violent ideas being shouted by Zwick (and those like him).

At some stage the climate catastrophists, alarmists or doomsayers, call them what you will, will be proved to be wrong and future generations will look back at this time with the same hilarity as the aliens in the Smash ads did at peeling potatoes and wonder how so many people could have been duped for so long at such expense. The edifice of AGW alarmism is crumbling with every passing day and the behaviour of Zwick will only hasten that day. However if we surrender freedom of speech in the pursuit of climate realism we will all lose. Allow Zwick, Mann, Hansen et al make fools of themselves as often as possible but let’s not take the road of censorship. It may be very difficult to regain free speech when it is lost.

Can I please trade my current land for “sunken island property”? Right now my house is worth about 30% less than it was 5 years ago, while unimproved property on the Maldives is going for over $50 a square foot. And that’s for beachfront property less than half a meter above current sea level. Gosh, for land that’s about to be consumed by the sea, they’re making some awfully good money. I wonder how much Al Gore has purchased?

Zwick doesn’t believe in gwarming? Oh, is it “climate change?” I’m not sure really if your comment is sensical. But based simply on the crazy rant of his article he just penned, he’s a nutcase. At least you didn’t say that you yourself look like Zwick, but we can say there is a ‘consensus’ that he has the eccentric look like his radical chum from Berkeley, the geekish Gleick. Honestly, to suggest that he’s not a leftist strains credulity. A cursory google search finds no evidence that he isn’t. Virtually all the top members of the Chicken Little Brigade are hardened leftists. Point me to any evidence to the contrary on Zwick, please.

There are also criminal penalties for making a terrorist threat, and for conspiracy to the same. Here’s a tip – calling for people in writing to take an action or omit an action that would result in the burning of private or public property IS conspiracy. It’s not commentary or opinion, it’s asking people to allow or cause the destruction by fire.

Actually, Witch hunts were rare. Thousands upon thousands did not die. Most of those who were killed were men. Witch hunts are as big a myth as Global Warming.
