Al Gore's 'Current TV' even further down the tubes – Olbermann fired

Readers may recall I reported last year on Al Gore’s attempt to prop up slumping viewership in his mishmash of programming satellite channel Current TV by hiring Keith Olbermann. It seems that idea didn’t work out well and I can’t say I’m unhappy with this news:

Founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt have issued a big bloviating statement saying that Elliot Spitzer will replace Olbermann which you can read here. Yeah, like anyone is going to watch that.

I got a kick out of this part of their statement:

All of these additions to Current’s lineup are aimed at achieving one simple goal — the goal that has always been central to Current’s mission: To tell stories no one else will tell, to speak truth to power, and to influence the conversation of democracy on behalf of those whose voices are too seldom heard.

In that case Al, tell me when you are going to do a report on your “high school science” that couldn’t even get the basics right. See Al Gore and Bill Nye FAIL at doing a simple CO2 experiment. No one else seems to want to tell that story, so I’ll offer it to you free of charge, just say the word.

In related news, I also hear that Al Gore is exploring a new climate game show concept with these guys to be called “Wheel of Forecasts”…

On March 30, 2012, Current announced that Keith Olbermann would no longer host a show on their network. A statement released by network founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt explained the network’s “values are no longer reflected” in Current’s relationship with Olbermann, and that former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer will host “Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer” in the time slot previously occupied by Olbermann.

Interesting.
current TV was carried in 2007 in the UK on the VirginMedia Cable Network ( Basically the only national cable network we have, but it’s more mainstream than many Americans might think in relation to the Cable TV you have over there. There is little comparison, we don’t have those horrific local channels paid for by all manner of lunatics and if I’m quite honest, Current TV was exactly that type of programming and a very odd choice for UK TV, cable or otherwise ) and on Murdoch’s Sky TV sattelite network. Both parties dropped Current TV from their line-up in January of this year.
As of now there is no way to view it in the UK. But given so few did I doubt it will be missed.
Personally I’d taken little notice of it. There was a selection of liberal hand-wringing going on whenever I flicked past it so I moved on. I always was under the assumption that it had something to do with Google rather than Al Gore and Yahoo. But of course I never had enough interest to follow up and find out. I’m sure this news about Olbermann being sacked is of great interest in the USA but frankly in Europe, we don’t know, or care who these people are.

Don’t worry Big Al. Some liberal politician will introduce the “fairness doctrine” so that the media will be forced to play fair. Of course, to a liberal, fair is a code-word for agreeing with them. That is what they want, but you can’t say that directly, so the idea has to be masked by another word. The ones that preach tolerance are the most intolerant of them all.

March 30, 2012 6:52 pm

It wasn’t until this very moment that I realized the Hyatt fellow involved with Current TV is that same horrible man that ran for Senator in Ohio and lost to Dewine. He was the hand-picked successor to Metzenbum, but fortunately for us “Metzenbum” didn’t have the same panache as “Kennedy” and was unable to setup a family dynasty. Hyatt and Gore deserve each other: the two dullest speaker in america, IMHO.

Watched the last few minutes of Viewpoint tonight. Spitzer had another Current host on with him talking about science and a recent poll indicating that conservatives have lost trust in science. They went on to explain the reason was that conservatives didn’t like what the science was telling them, so rather than succumb to the truth of global warming they rejected the truth. No mention of Climategate or Gleick or hockey sticks, or any other problem with AGW theory, or any reference to any studies or papers of any kind. They made the usual claim that oil companies spent billions of $’s on anti-warming propaganda, and connected that with tobacco companies spending Billions of $’s on propaganda about smoking not causing cancer. But, what do you expect on Al Gore TV?
Olberman was bad, Spitzer is no better. Leftist blather.

I work for a cable company and I had no clue what Current TV was until I saw this blog. Their biggest failing (in my opinion) was that unlike other networks, they didn’t have their programming info in the guide. You never knew what was going to be on until it aired. It was almost like they felt that they were the only channel on TV and it didn’t matter if you knew what coming on because you weren’t going anywhere.

Slightly off topic but concerning the experiment performed in the myth busters video (viewed on Anthony’s original post about Bill N. and the Gorical). I did not see a pressure gauge in the greenhouses demonstrating an atmospheric pressure difference. I read Anthony’s response and some of the commentary but didn’t see it mentioned. Wouldn’t this just be a cheap parlor trick done by raising the pressure in the gas filled greenhouses causing a temperature difference when heated? Not trying to start any ‘slayer’ stuff, just curious?

Because of the knowledge if we do, there will be at least 2 consecutive elections in which the left will run roughshod and make sweeping gains throughout the various states and national elections. By the time we’d have enough structure, backing, and popular support, this country wouldn’t be recognizable, and likely the party would be made illegal before it could properly form.
For those that doubt that last statement, just think of all of the awful proposals various people in government and advocates have made about us skeptics…….. now imagine no one in their way to stop them. Your worst imaginations…… that would be the result if the Repubs would split today.

First and foremost, I’m not a “conservative” in the sense we’re using the word in American politics today. The mainstream conception of “conservatism” is largely that of xenophobic frothing rabid religious whackjobs with a “Cops of the World!” attitude based upon the arrogant supposition that the entire planet can (and should) be smashed into subservience by way of military aggression.
These mock-“conservatives” don’t give a damn for the concept of civil government subservient to the rule of law ordained by the charter defining our federal thugs’ legitimate duties and prohibitions.
Second, like H.L. Mencken, I’m aware of the fact that:

“In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for. As for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican.”

At best, the Republican Party is nothing more than a sick charade, and in its essence it’s merely a component part of that system of “legal graft” by which every private citizen in our nation is ruthlessly pillaged.
With that in mind, let it also be understood that – like South Park co-creator Matt Stone

“I hate conservatives, but I really f–king hate liberals.”

Were Algore and the Olbermann and all their co-religionists to suddenly wind up in the South Park version of Hell along with Saddam Hussein and a sodomite Satan scorning even to grant ’em the solace of a reach-around, I wouldn’t shed a tear for them.
Heck, it’d take me half an hour to get the laughter under control.

Olberman is now supposedly going to come up with some kind of internet based programming that he produces on his own.
If you could play Olbermann’s career in reverse, it would tell the story of a total unknown, producing unwatched youtube videos, who rises up through the ranks and eventually anchors a news show, becomes the face of a major cable network, and who then begins broadcasting major national sports events.

CNN bore the brunt of the downward trend the news networks experienced this month and for much of the first quarter, when compared to the busy first few months of 2011. For the month of March, CNN was down -50% in total viewers and down -60% in A25-54 viewers (Total Day)…
All the cable news networks were down compared to the first quarter a year ago …
CNN reached an average monthly cumulative audience of 91 million viewers during the first quarter 2012, FNC followed with 77 million and MSNBC had 74 million.

Well, well. How perfectly ironic that a devout socialist can stumble into the truth regarding the crackpot authoritarian, Al Gore, and his ethical challenges. I recall Olbermann complaining about being fired from Fox by Rupert Murdoch due to (in his opinion), Murdoch’s anti-liberal corporate policies. Additionally, how ironic is it that a bloated, overpaid, under-worked, chronically-complaining laborer is sacked (once again) by a contract-breaking, left-wing employer due to under-performance and/or incompetence?

Am I the only Liberal who doesn’t believe in CAGW? I like Olbermann. The only show worth watching now on Current is The Young Turks. They sometimes have BS stories on climate change but overall they are pretty entertaining.

John Gf,
I’m also a bit preoccupied with the slightly ‘off-topic’ high-school experiment. I just left a comment on that thread, not really noticing that it was so old. In any case, I suspect that if done carefully you should be able to observe a container with more CO2 rise to higher temperature at a faster rate. However, I agree with Anthony’s comment that this does not demonstrate the actual mechanism behind the greenhouse effect. This experiment could just as easily demonstrate that higher CO2 content will cause the gas to cool faster as a result of lower IR.
Given all of Anthony’s efforts trying to reproduce the experiment and not get the same result it may be possible that Bill Nye actually did not carry out the experiment, or perhaps they didn’t control for change in pressure which also contributed to higher temperature. It doesn’t appear to be straightforward to set up this experiment such that direct warming of the gas is the dominant effect. For example, Anthony mentioned that since the source is not visible light the container will absorb IR and how to avoid direct heating of the thermometer itself?

I know some may ridicule what Al Gore is trying to do with Current TV, even though I don’t share the political views aired, I support the effort. I’m a firm believer that dissenting POV’s, even the the more radical progressive side, should have a forum.

I agree, in part. I’ve adopted an understanding gained from David Weber’s SciFi Honor Harrington novels. If someone has strongly held moral beliefs, they feel duty bound to defend those beliefs. In fact, acting in any other way would – in their minds – be the immoral act. We may disagree with their perspective, goals, and means. But defending their closely held beliefs is not evil.
However, your position rests on two assumptions that are faulty.
The first is that they do not have any, or sufficient, venue to proclaim their position. This is demonstrably false. There is a well known dominance in all forms of mass media for beating out their message. So to posit that their voice is not being heard is patently ridiculous.
The second is the assumption that, as I stated above, that they are only trying to raise awareness of a strongly held moral position. For some this is no doubt true. But as has been made all too clear, most are using AGW – and other issues – as a cynical method to advance their agenda of power and control.

“‘Current TV’ even further down the tubes”
I’d say getting rid of Olby is UP the tubes. ;-p

Gore is hiring Spitzer for his extensive contacts, what was the name of that escort agency again?
Oh yes, the Emperors Club VIP, or as warmistas would classify it as “a global warming stress relieving agency”.

You couldn’t write better slapstick comedy than Olbermann being replaced by Spitzer. Too funny. We won’t get a laugh like this for a while so enjoy.

Wow….the comments at the Current website (below Gore’s announcement about KO) resemble the breakdown of an “alternative” marriage. Lots of spitting, slapping, hair pulling, and scratching about the face!
I expect we’ll see a lot more of these implosions in the coming months.
