A Mann and his throne

Josh of Cartoons by Josh wrote to me via email today of his latest cartoon about Mike Mann’s book. He writes:

With Mike Mann’s book still getting good coverage in various corners of the media I felt another cartoon was needed. Especially as another Mike, Mike Daisey, gave us such a brilliant quote: “I stand by it as a theatrical work” speaking of his made up story about the conditions at a Chinese factory which makes Apple products ( you can read the whole retractionĀ here).

Mike Mann is not totally happy with all the PR, though, as we know from his Twitter reaction to reviews byĀ Anne JolisĀ and Miranda Devine. He is probably going to be really teed off when he see this poll on the Daily Kos.

The article’s title isĀ ‘Michael Mann is a Modern Hero and we need to acknowledge that!’. To date around 97% of readers do not agree and think he is either distorting evidence or should be fired from the University. That number sounds like a consensus to me.

And ‘Game of Thrones’? It’s an HBO blockbuster of a series based on George R R Martin’s books ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’. If you haven’t seen the series you might not have the foggiest clueĀ  what I am referring to… but, never mind, even the title ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’ couldn’t be more apt.Ā And guess what the show’s slogan is: “Winter is coming”.

The book is currently ranked #3,695 on Amazon.com

Throne of hockey sticks… classic. Worth remembering that in the books, the Iron Throne was designed to be uncomfortable to sit upon, I wonder how comfy Mr Mann’s seat is right now.
I consider him more of an Illyrio Mopatis, a fat money grubber who sees his own profit as most important.
Or maybe an Aerys Targaryen (the Mad King) who spent the last hours of his life repeating “Burn them all” about the rebelling forces of Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark… (ok, holy snip I know too much about these books off the top of my head… !)

Maurizio: So with you on that, such a dysfunctional mental outlook is not something I wish to see my children ever exposed to without adequate supervision to educate them as to that being not the way to behave if you ever wish to really contribute to society over the long haul. For that and that alone, Mann is the perfect example.

Propaganda, as ruthlessly practiced By Fox News and others, has succeeded in demonizing Dr. Mann. His work stands, however, and the conditions he expertly describes, are real. The global temperature is rising and we all need to do something to remedy this problem.Mann, and the legion of practicing climate scientists, have given us the information we need to “fix the problem” and the longer we delay this effort the more expensive and difficult it will be.

March 22, 2012 4:12 am

Hugh Pepper, you have no shame. You have been shown to be a liar right here, and yet you continue to post your verifiable nonsense.
Global temperatures have been rising along exactly the same long term trend line since the LIA, whether CO2 levels were 280 ppmv or are 392 ppmv. There is no difference in that naturally rising trend line, therefore CO2 has no measurable effect. It seems that everyone but you knows that.
Michael Mann is only a part of a small clique of climate alarmists who are greedily feeding at the public trough. Mann fights tooth and nail to keep any federal grant money from going to skeptical climate scientists. He is an entirely self-serving climate charlatan, and credulous fools like you who know nothing of the subject ignorantly fall into line. If Mann believed the anti-science nonsense he emits, he would have no hesitation about defending it in scientific debates. Instead, he hides out, hoping that his ignorant followers take potshots from the sidelines. That is not science, that is propaganda. And you are an enabler of his mendacity.
You still have not provided the [non-existent] citations to your seven (7) mythical papers that you repeatedly claimed confirm Mann’s debunked MBH98/99 nonsense. Until/unless you provide those [non-existent] citations, your baseless opinions are nothing more than dishonest talking points that you get from incredible sources like RealClimatePropaganda and Pseudo-Skeptical Pseudo-Science.
If I’m wrong about any of this, provide those seven mythical citations we’re still waiting for. The gauntlet is down. Put up or shut up.

It’s ivory towers all the way down.

I’ve always thought that the most important thing that we can do to combat Catastrophic Climate Change (which threatens us every one from our pointy little heads to our frosty little piggies) is to fire up our coal-powered computers, running on a network made of substances mined using petroleum & coal, sitting in our houses warmed by coal or gas or oil while snacking on high-quality petroleum byproducts being hawked by a cat in sunglasses (wiping the residue on our pants made in Indonesia), and whine about some mythical sky-god named “FoxNews” who supposedly controls everything in the universe.
That, or flying hundreds of gigantic metal sausages to tropical islands. One of those things is bound to fix the problem, or my name isn’t Steven “Cadillac Escalade” Chu.

Josh,
Great job, as always.
There may be a viewer or two that might miss the significance of the background color; so . . .
There are phrases ā€œin the purpleā€ and ā€œborn in the purple.ā€ The royalty of previous generations believed the color purple was meant for them. A room with walls made of a purple rock was used as a birthing room, reserved for the Queen. So, to be ā€œborn in the purpleā€™ would mean your mother was Queen when you were born, and, perhaps, an earlier born brother might not have been so born even though he had the same mother. That was an important distinction. The color was achieved in fabrics from use of a dye made from sea snails. Search on the phrase ā€œTyrian purpleā€ for that.
For the rock, search on ā€œporphyryā€ and its historical sources and uses. Go to the Saudi Aramco World (magazine) site and in the search box type the word. There are seven results. Pick the one titled ā€œVia Porphyritesā€ and find the text. At the very bottom is a link to graphics. The second article in the list (Millennia of Murex) is about the dye.

DJ
March 22, 2012 6:57 am

Watching, with agony, the interview with Mann posted by Soren above I was repeatedly struck by the insistence that it’s “them vs. us”, deniers vs. scientists where Mann is a scientist, and anyone who questions him is a denier and NOT a scientist. (Lindzen, Spencer, Christy, …. they may be wrong, but they ARE scientists, and their credibility is most certainly no less than equal to or greater than Mann’s.)
The position taken is akin to a member of one political party getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar, but when the other party demands an audit to prove the wrongdoing, they’re accused of being “anti-business” and not playing by the rules.
Mann does say that they’ve been playing by the rules…. True science doesn’t recognize “rules” in this context, so why would they need to not play by the rules if their “science” is genuine?
Mann’s claim that CO2 is the “big knob” should stand on its own quite easily if it’s true. So far, I don’t think it is. As further insult to his credibility as an actual scientist, there is more and more evidence to suggest that his field of tree rings as temperature proxie is eroding.

No, Mann (and the legion) have not given any information on how to “fix the problem”. They have merely produced a self-serving load of parrot-droppings that sets off a droning recital from the Troll Factor. The solution, oddly alluded to in quotes above, is worse than the problem. It already HAS been expensive and difficult, with no foreseeable positive outcome. You must lead a lonely existence, Hugh. Are you sure you are in the right forum? Our “Rules” are the scientific method and publication of data and methods in a peer reviewed journal so the science can validated.
We have ample evidence that Mann and friends do not play by those rules. Instead they used “Pal” review, lawyers, hides their data, lose the data, ignore FOIA, and resorts to threats including getting a journal editor removed.
As I have said before “Science” richly deserves the black eye it is getting. It needs to be dragged from the Ivory Tower and through the mud and that is what is starting to happen.
Here are some examples:
New York Times: “A well-known psychologist in the Netherlands whose work has been published widely in professional journals falsified data and made up entire experiments, an investigating committee has found.” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/03/health/research/noted-dutch-psychologist-stapel-accused-of-research-fraud.html

The FDA said Cetero manipulated test samples so the tests would yield desired results.” http://www.medcitynews.com/2011/07/fda-says-cro-cetero-faked-trial-data-pharmas-may-need-to-redo-tests/

‘Scientists falsify data to get research published and whistleblowers are bullied into keeping quiet,’ claim their own colleagues
More than one in ten scientists and doctors claim to have witnessed colleagues deliberately fabricating data in order to get their research published, a new poll has revealed.
The survey of almost 2,800 experts in Britain also found six per cent knew of possible research misconduct at their own institution that has not been properly investigated…. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2085814/Scientists-falsify-data-research-published-whistleblowers-bullied-keeping-quiet-claim-colleagues.html

John B,
Wrong. I voted once. After I voted, the vote total screen came up, but it didn’t offer the option to vote again.
Besides, you no doubt would have voted for the option saying that “Michael Mann is an outstanding scientist and human being”. That one had only eleven votes when I checked just now.
You are projecting, like when a thief thinks everyone else is a thief, too. No doubt you would have been hitting that vote button a lot more than eleven times. If you could.
The public can smell a rat. Mann is an odious little creature. Everything he says and everything he writes makes him look bad, from his book, to the Climategate emails, to his newspaper columns and public statements. He is a serial name-caller [deniers, denialists, contrarians, Koch Brothers, funded by Big Oil, etc], and his science is crooked. He is vindictive, his co-workers don’t much like him, and now the far-Left Daily Kos poll shows that 97% of voters believe Mann is a self-serving, corrupt climate charlatan who should be fired.

BTW If you want to see the Mann himself

Maybe someone can turn up and give him a signed copy of The Hockey Stick Illusion?

Smokey, Anthony,
I just went to the article from your link, selected Results, then hit the Vote button a few times. All my votes counted, I think. Now I can’t cvote, s I’m guessing I got through their security quite by accident. I used Firefox, with no special settings.

REPLY: I tried it on a virgin machine never having visited the site before, and was prevented from voting after the first vote was recorded. Almost every poll like this has some sort of basic security like that. I can’t imagine this one would not, otherwise why wouldn’t we see more votes from supporters if it was wide open as some people suggest? – Anthony

Better yet ask Mann to sign the copy of The Hockey Stick Illusion you might even be able to slide it in without him figuring out what it is he is signing.
Boy would THAT be a collector’s item decades down the road.

At 1007 23 March 2012, the voting stood at
Michael Mann
did not choose to became a symbol — 0% 14 votes
has been attacked in many of the same ways that the President and John Kerry were — 0% 12 votes
Is an outstanding scientist and human being — 0% 11 votes
all of the above — 1% 54 votes
is distorting evidence to prove his point — 71% 3029 votes
should be fired from the university — 26% 1115 votes
Total — 4238 votes
The consensus is that Mann-made Global Warm–uhhhhh–Climate Change a fraud, and it’s worse than he thought.
The debate is over…

Josh, a suggestion for the next cartoon in this series – Mike sitting on his throne with his pants down.

John B is still fabricating his bogus story, as Bill Tuttle shows above in a post subsequent to John B’s claims of multiple voting.
Why is it that the purveyors of the “carbon” scare are all serial liars? They all are, from Mann to Schneider to Gleick, and all the way down to John B. It’s probably because they know that if they told the truth, there would be no scare. But that does not excuse their lying.

Proving that the committed basically don’t read anyway.

Buy the book, keep the dust cover. You’ll not regret it.
