It has been an exhausting month since Fakegate hit the scene, and tonight when I came home from work, I crashed hard, taking a nap. I even missed dinner. My children tried to wake me up apparently to no avail. At the moment I feel like I have a hangover.
Behind the scenes, I’m dealing with a lot of things related to WUWT and the legal fight building with the Pacific Institute and Gleick, plus other things. Today for example I’m wrestling with starting the blog all over again on another platform because my wordpress.com free hosting keeps messing under the hood with the production code and they’d broken something yet again (some readers can’t comment any more thanks to a new security feature) just after we got the mess with adwords fixed last week. So yeah, I’m pretty toasted all in all at the moment. Then I read this comment from a reader on the DeSmog Blog headed back to obscurity thread.

I found WUWT barely a month before Fakegate happened. Prior to finding this site, I was a head-in-the-sand kind of person. I knew the whole fry-and-die alarmism was wrong, the claims were getting very stupid, as was the panic.
Getting fed up with ever increasing nonsense scare tactics, I pushed back from news outlets. I didn’t want to hear anymore. I also felt very alone. It was Ian Plimer’s “How to get expelled from school” that opened my eyes to the growing fight back to rational thinking. I bought the book (and there were only two left on the shelf, so I know it’s popular) and read it in a day.
Encouraged, I got online and found WUWT and others. I cannot express how wonderful it felt to learn that REAL scientists out there are practicing REAL science and presenting it properly.
Point is, for those years I had my head in the sand, I didn’t know just what a tangled mess this had all become. I didn’t know what a horrible world was developing right under our noses.
I come here every day. This is my home page. I love the science, I love the way it is presented and I love reading the comments and thoughts from so many very intelligent people. But I also devour any news on the political front. I crave and seek out every snippet of good news, and believe me, this is good news.
Anthony, I want to see these dastards go down. I came in at a most exciting time and I want to watch every step of the alarmists fall from grace. Thank you for providing the whole picture, the wide picture, science, politics and all.

Ally. I have followed WUWT for years which has been the main driver for the AGW problemitas LOL, but there is also real-science by S Goddard who only shows graphs with very little comment, that are so obvious no explanations are actually needed
Anthony, I too get discouraged–not so much with the Climate Science(?) as practiced by the team because nature doesn’t listen to idiots like Michael Mann, but with the political climate as evidenced by Australia’s attempts to suppress free speech. Then I read some interesting Post, Guest Post, or Comment on your blog and I feel better. Please take care of yourself; if not for your sake, for my sake. Do something to relax–go fishing, take a hike, watch a funny movie, read a good book, play golf (well maybe you should pass on the golf). Remember, in 100 years what happens now won’t make a whit of difference to most of us.

Same here. Times were hard almost 10 years ago when I saw the direction the CAGW meme was taking. In 2007, when I read parts of WG1, I was totally discouraged at the poor science, and later, at the gullible public, the ignorant media and the opportunistic politicians. CAGW was almost the perfect crime. It was politically incorrect to question it (it still is but somewhat less). Finding Climate Audit and WUWT was a breath of fresh air, to say the least. Thanks for your tireless work. I know it’s not your goal but the role of WUWT will eventually be widely acknowledged.
I rarely see Anthony mention $$, so you know he is doing it for all the right reasons. The best way to say thank you is to open your wallets (to heartland too). There is tremendous power in a lot of small donations, the Tea Party has already proved that.
I believe that this site also provides a rallying point for this evolving thing that Prof. Glenn Reynolds called “An Army of Davids” in the sense of the story of David and Goliath.

I recognize the symptoms you describe, as I’ve been experiencing the same. You made me realize it’s ‘Time to tune it out, turn it off, and sleep deep for a bunch of nights in a row.’ Take your bride out – just because. Check out the blossoms of spring and enjoy an hours delight watching the wee hummingbirds zipping around the feeder.
The blog world will still be here and the fight for integrity in climate science can rest on other shoulders for a bit. We respect your work ethic and deeply appreciate this forum of reason you have created.

Right on, Ally! I know how you feel. I discovered WUWT a couple of years ago after a bruising encounter with the vitriolic trolls who frequent the Guardian’s enviro site and it has become my go-to page for reading fascinating, educational stuff written by intelligent, sensible people and as a bonus,. Anthony’s blog-roll gives me access to a wider world of similar stuff.

Anthony, what can I say? I’m just an average joe who doesn’t pretend to be a scientist. I am like Ally in some ways. I knew deep down inside that something was wrong with the information and the way it was being presented to us by the powers-that-be in the Climate Bureaus. When you did your station site review I found a weather station that was maybe 30 ft. from a paved highway, and not even 20 ft. away from an AC vent. I knew this just wasn’t proper station siting, and I began to understand that AGW had more to do with politics and control than it had to do with climate. These people made no pretext of being fair or accurate, and could care less when someone like yourself pointed out these facts to them. Rather than address the problem, they attempted to silence their critics, and they continue to do so. This just wasn’t right. As I read more and more here, I’ve learned so much, and though I rarely comment, know that I visit this blog every day not only for the great posts but for the great comments as well.
I say thank you, get some well-deserved rest, and slow down a little bit. I know the line holding back the hordes is thin, but more and more people are joining daily, and perhaps the tide is finally turning. You deserve a lot of credit in holding the line, Anthony. As with every successful revolution, the tiny few like yourself are the ones who make the difference, and pay the larger price. But you also get the pleasure of knowing that you made the sacrifice, you had the courage, and you stood when the tide was running against you. But you never quit. Anthony, thank you for all you’ve done. Your contribution towards making the world a better place (or keeping it from becoming a worse place) has been hugely positive and I hope you can keep up the energy for as long as possible.
The beauty of WUWT and Steve Goddard’s Real Science blog is that people get to see real discussions of different points of view, examination of items that do not pass the smell test, and just plain thoughts on different topics.
A little appreciated, HUGE benefit of such sites are that they help people develop “knowledge filters” regarding science. More fondly called BS filters, they are not easily developed without a lot of exposure to the concepts as well as the relationships, laws, facts, and context. It’s more valuable than anything I know of.
Yeah, this is all well and good, but I’m tempted to create my own “Open Thread” guest post, complete with rope splicing image, and tell everyone you’re taking the weekend off. Not that you’ll take the hint, or anything like that….

And here I thought the most exciting time was Climategate, which burst out a week or so after I started regularly reading blogs on the subject. I’ve checked my list of sites twice-daily since then and all I can say is that it has taken/is taking more time than I originally thought it would for the whole thing to collapse. There is a good paper by Krestin Green(?) on the similarities between this and other scams. The prediction was that it would be a gradual process and that the damaging policies, taxes etc would take far longer to be removed.
What will come out of this I’m sure will be rise of the new generation of mainstream media, the blogs of today. The current MSM appears to be losing credibility by the day and people are resorting to the few, independent, knowledgeble blogs whose owners have the integrity not seen in the MSM for many years.
Hit the Tip Jar folks. People like Anthony need to be encouraged, and supported, to continue.
Just think (and Ally is right)–the CAGW meme has displayed so much of their inner rot recently, Anthony is dog tired putting it up for all to see.
So each of us should do a bit more–let’s all make a commitment to recommend this site to one new person every week. After a year, I’m betting readership would double. (Most of the people I’ve mentioned this site to had never heard of it before, so the opportunities for an ever-increasing audience are simply staggering.)

Thank you for letting us know how you are feeling. Please note we are here to support you .I have been following this site since almost the beginning and have found it wonderful. Ally, like you , I felt as though I was looking for TRUTH and there was too much spin around all the AGW stuff, and when some so called film star (cant remember who) professed his belief in AGW and the ‘Science is settled’ I started to worry ‘cos he wern’t that bright. I learned at school that, within science , very little is settled and that we should question everything. I began searching for information as to what was going on. All I found was deceit and the more I dug the more the dirt seemed to come to the surface. having discovered WUWT things started to make more sense. Openness is the hallmark of truth and by saying something is ‘settled’ is like shutting down the conversation / arguement.

You know Anthony if you were only willing to turn to the Dark Side, you could probably find any number of well funded PR firms to handle all those pesky details for you. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all really could have the Koch brothers on speed dial. But kidding aside, don’t be reticent about posting an open thread and taking some time for yourself and your family. The pace of posts lately has been so quick that my old eyes can’t keep up anyway. Despite appearances this mess won’t be going away anytime soon so we all need to pace ourselves for the long haul. Know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers daily and i wish I could find words adequate to express how much I appreciate the man killing effort you have put into this site. You truly are more deserving of a Nobel Peace prize than any recent recipient. I’d let you have mine, but since it didn’t come with any medal or money and the list of recent awardees has made any prestige associated with it mostly negative you probably wouldn’t want it. Anthony, I was the science guy for a couple years on a popular blog. It does wear one down. You have the politicized dolts, the professional money guys, the academics on the gravy train, and the simply dis-honest against you. And the real mathematicians, statisticians, scientists, economists, etc. all afraid because they have a house payment to make or a complicated paper they want to publish in a journal (a single publisher controls over a hundred titles, i don’t think many realize that) that may not conform to the party line.
However, it may have been worthwhile. As you have seen.
WUWT has been my favorite web site for years now. Thanks to you, I can discuss the climate mess with my physicist son and not get beaten down. Anthony, do take the time you need for yourself and family. We need you, and you will last longer if you spare yourself a little.
I am a long time browser of this site and this is my first post.
I feel exactly the same as AllyE. It scares me that there are so many drones out there who accept what they are told without any question. I was fortunate to be brought up in a school environment that taught me the skill of critical analysis and not to necessarily accept things on face value. Of course this was 45 years ago and things appear to have changed markedly in education.
What ever happened to scientific skeptisism. We now live in a world of activist scientists who seem to have forgotten that science is never settled. Worse, they don’t even want to listen to theory or postulates outside of their own narrow view.
Keep up the good work Anthony, there are many people out there like me who are an avid viewer of your site but don’t actually participate in the forum.

As to you Mr. Watts, I have shredded the occasional NorthWest neo-hippie with facts I’ve gleaned from your site. Otherwise, I would not have been so prepared.
In the Ozark Mountains streams and rivers the smallmouths will smash a Rapala Minnow lure hard now. These are strong fish that absolutely go ape when hooked. Or better still, a Storm Thundercore Minner. I was badly out fished by a woman who was using the only Storm Minner I had in the box. She out fished me so badly that day and it got down right difficult to take, so I hunted around and now have dozens of them. Sadly, Storm doesn’t make them any more. Glad I stocked up on them before they were all gone.
Come on over to the Ozarks anytime you are ready to get away and I’ll put you on some big browns. If you don’t mind being blindfolded until I get you to the best places to fish.

There is something orwellian about the relentless alarmist message. I subscribe to the Australian (part of the “hate” media) out of hope I will get something intelligent and today one has Steketee getting stuck into Bob Carter. Apparantly Carter is not overly concerned about CO2 levels of 390 ppm, so Steketee establishes that it is a problem by quoting a BOM-Csiro report, ie appeal to authority, without having the ability to present the essential facts of why it is a problem, except that it is a matter of scientific opinion that the increase in Co2 has caused significant warming.
OK an environmental reporter should report what scientists think. Why not ask simple questions such as:
1) How come there was cooling from 1945 to 1970 or so, warming from about 1970 to 2000, then a flattenning out, while the CO2 is apparently an extremely steady increase. Effect should be correlated with cause.
2) Why are the hansen/IPCC projections simply garbage.
3) Why is the warming in the 20th century focused on countries with extremely suspect temperature measurements.
4) How is Mann’s garbage tree-ring science not simply rejected out of hand. We know from many historical facts that climate varied significantly in the past.
The skeptics have raised many questions that are simply ignored by the alarmists and also by environmental reporters on major newspapers. The reporters know that if they ask relevant questions they will develop career-threatening reputations. Its OK to be hated by the right. They will still listen if you have something intelligent to say. However the other side has no mercy.
Anthony I started reading your blog quite a few years ago. I came in looking for something…and that something was a place to find truth. We kept hearing the world would end. That the sea’s would rise and the weather would become out of control. And I kept thinking we why do we have such vanity?
What you have inspired is an army of people that think. We look into the facts to find the truth and that is wonderful.

I was around when the Montreal protocol removed some of the most efficient refrigerants on the market: R11, 12 and 502 and later 22. This may mean nothing to most of the people here but I felt like you. Alone. They claimed that they were destroying the ozone layer and increasing the green house gas effect. No proof was given that anyone in the industry would blow a charge intentionally. Scant evidence was given about the scientific claims of impending doom. Many jumped at the chance to present at conferences on how this would save the earth. Nobody challenged these people and commercial refrigeration depended on these refrigerants. As a result Allied Signal and Dupont made a killing with HCFC, Aziotropes and the like. These were less efficient meaning they required more energy to provide the same heat transfer. That meant higher power bills and and much more pollution as a result. The consumer suffered.
The same nefarious hucksters are still at it. Selling us windmill farms that go idle when the tax syrup runs out. Selling us photo voltaic arrays that have negative cash flows even with 85% incentives. Selling us Electric Vehicles that get a range of 30 miles if you dare use the heater on your journey home. Tidal power, compressed air energy storage devices, algae, ethanol, bio gas and bio fuels that have no potential for sustainable production beyond a de minimis amount. All under the guise of saving the planet. But this time it is different. People are doing the math and demanding answers and accountability.
In short, I join you Ally in your appreciation. I want to thank not only Mr. Watts but all the generous people that take time to post on this site. It is the best review of all the climate science out there. Most of the people here can be hard hitting on the science. Damn how I love reading those comments and what an education. I don’t feel alone anymore and after reading hundreds of scientific articles I challenge the hucksters, frauds and wannabe’s peddling this Anthropogenic Catastrophic Global Warming Scam. The stakes are just too high this time around to do nothing.
Ally, I don’t know what your background is, (I am a mechanical engineer) but I can assure you it doesn’t require a whole lot of critical thinking skills to get acclimated here. Just time. curiosity and the giving nature of the science minded people that frequent this site.

Anthony, the fact that you have been voted the Best Science Blog on the web in consecutive years says it all. Like many others I keep your site open on my computer at all times and check it several times daily along with Bishop Hill and, being a True Blue Aussie I also have Jo Nova and Andrew Bolt open on the same basis.
If our current Government proceeds with the recommendations of it’s recent enquiry into Media control not only our newspapers, but blogs will also be subject to their scrutiny (interesting that a Judge with a Jewish name like Finklestein should propose similar press controls as those utilised by Goebels in a democratic country with severe laws regarding libel and defamation already in place).
Anthony, you should be justifiably proud of this blog. It is an outstanding achievement. It isn’t just the best science blog, it’s the best blog on the entire internet IMO.
When they come to write to the social history of this era, I expect that you will get mentioned as one of the people who used the internet to break the power of big media/goverment, etc to peddle dogma as science, and to provide people like Ally and many others a place to get the facts and interesting debates around the science..
I know people who don’t want to read WUWT because they may read something they don’t want to read and because what is here proves invariably to be factually correct or logically correct. I’m talking about some real deniers, AKA alarmists. Keep up the good work Anthony.

I believe, the day will come, when Anthony Watts will be awarded the Nobel Prize.
I`m a positive person – and I believe that truth and justice will win the day eventually. It will take another 5-to-6 years. Around 2018 when we get to “20 years with no warming” is when the C.AGW scam will completely crash down. I doubt it will happen before then, because there are too many crooks involved in the C.AGW scam, (I include the MSM as crooks). But eventually, the public will demand that those responsible for the $billions wasted and the millions of children brainwashed and the millions of jobs lost, be brought to justice (criminal justice). And then real science can resume. When that happens, I think Anthony along with Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick will be awarded the Nobel Prize.

Stress builds up gradually, and then waylays you when a few things unexpectedly go wrong. We’re made with limits, and when you reach that limit, simple tasks suddenly become impossible. Been there. A warning sign is dizziness that sets in about 30 seconds after standing — then you know you’re nearing the wall. Sleep is the best cure. I’m guessing the prospect of migrating off WordPress is too much of an ask, Anthony. Recommend you rest, make no big changes for now, and see what your moderators can do for you to lighten the load.

On the website front.The good thing about wordpress is that you are limited in what you do so instead of playing with the technology, you create articles. WordPress also boost articles way beyond what they would as ordinary sites (at least my small blog can suddenly come out no.1 on google search whereas my village website has never achieved the same).
However, there is a lot more you can do with your own site. …. but it needs more expertise, and you may find that you have even less people able to contribute and/or your regular helpers are spending time on the website and not time on the articles.

I’m down here in the City of Sails doing a bit of climate science myself; well weather science. Last Monday I visited with Professor Roger Davies at the UofA, to talk about his “Sky is Falling” paper; well clouds are falling anyhow; so I now have a copy of the complete paper. He’s a very pragmatic guy, and just wants to report what he finds from his (satellite) observations. I’ve been seeing some sky is falling effect myself. It’s a tad humid here, and the puffy cumulus clouds are so bloody low, they can almost go under the Harbor bridge. But Davies looks at Cirrus mostly, and I guess you, being a weather geek, would understand why that is. (I don’t). And my old electronics Professor told me that quite a few respectable scientists (Physicists) here.including Dr Chris de Freitas, are confident there are gaping holes in the knowledge of climate.
Davies told me specifically, that “they” don’t know how to properly model the reflectance of clouds.
This afternoon, I was out with a friend (and some new ones) tooling around in a 70 foot Volvo Round the World ocean raceboat; a former second place finisher. And the clouds were almost down to the mast top, and so bloody bright on my eyes. These things are even more powerful than the Americas Cup Boats, and we were flying full sail in 20 kts of wind, while a 2003 AC boat had to take two reefs in its main sail. I spent so much time looking at the clouds, and photographing them with a fisheye lens, that I hardly noticed much of the In Harbor race, that the current Volvo Race boats put on. Well the Team New Zealand/ Camper (Spanish shoe Company) boat won that race easily; and the current Volvo Leader came in last (Telephonica). Camper made good use of their knowledge of the local ocean crrents to scream into the lead early, and never looked back. They all head out into the Southern Ocean tomorrow, to monitor Antarctic ice growth; next stop Brazil.
It was a fun way to study the energy interplay beweent he atmosphere and the ocean.
If I had your knowledge of the weather system, I probably could have had even more fun.
But definitely the clouds are falling; but the sun is shining on WUWT, so don’t sweat it Mate, it will all come out in the wash, and she’ll be right.
Chin up Anthony! There are so many people here behind you. As said before, Ally speaks for many of us, and I heartily endorse the sentiments. I can’t remember ever posting before, but if I have it was a very long time ago, however, I visit the site daily and frequently e-mail snippets from it to friends. I am also a regular visitor to Jo Nova, Bishop Hill and Australian Climate Madness, and a less frequent visitor to a few other similar sites, but your is at the top of the ‘must read daily’ list.
I would like to offer my thanks and gratitude for all that you and your helpers are doing.
As an aside, when I was in senior classes at High School, over 50 years ago, we had a section of English called ‘Clear Thinking’. In that we would be given some written work- sometimes from a newspaper, sometimes from books, and had to analyse the information. All contradictory statements had to be exposed along with false arguments etc., and I am sure those who took that course have been helped through life by understanding how to see the wood through the trees. I believe that such courses don’t exist any more. I wonder why?

Ally, it’s good to meet you – it’s always good to welcome a fellow rationalist. My own story is not so different, if you replace Fakegate with Climategate 1. Shortly before that, an amateur weatherwatching friend put cash on the table for anyone who could show him the evidence of impending catastrophe produced by mankind’s CO2: I set to with a will, having always been a scientific sort, but was horrified by the half-baked pseudoscience which I found. That in turn was explained when I started looking into the politics of it. (I hope you don’t horrify easily, if you’re going to look into that too, but it’s enlightening in its own horrible way.) Oh, and you won’t be surprised to hear that I think my friend’s cash is pretty safe, even as he annoyingly increases the sum annually (grrr!).
Anthony, you know a lot of us out here wonder how you manage to keep so many balls in the air – WUWT, family life, work, ham radio, and, and. From where I sit, it looks like Chico gets more hours to the day than we do in the Old World! Total respect, and endless thanks for a site which is always interesting, informative and – just as important – kept polite and to the point. Yep Ally…. Gosh, what is it, 6 years? since WUWT first started? Longer?… Whew, time flies!…..Climate Audit linking to WUWT is how I came to find Watt’s calm and considered opinions. All which helped to confirm my suspicions about the catastrophism, flawed science and overt politics within the AGW hypothesis. I was always sceptical, but it was good to see the scientific validation of that scepticism laid out so that a reasonable person could follow…. It is imperative that the scientific method is strictly applied at all times…. The opposite of sceptical, is gullible.
WUWT is a rational and courteous island in a sea of misleading propaganda.

I manage a vast amount of ‘work’ each and every day. All I ask, is that others don’t ‘demand’ an instant response to their request. It’s all about managing the ‘peaks’. I greatly enjoy what I do but sometimes ‘things’ jam up and I need to get to the calmer place a.s.a.p. I try my hardest not to let people down and I rarely let get complaints so I must be doing things right. This describes me and it doesn’t matter what I do.

It’s actually quite scary when you do think of the political reality of the world. I’m referring to the UN and its plans for – I know this sounds like something out of a James Bond film or a Gleick forgery, but it’s quite obvious by their own admissions – world domination. Our own elected leaders seem hell bent on handing power to unelected bureaucrats in the pursuit of their hallowed New World Order. What’s just as scary is the fact that most people can’t see it happening right under their noses, as Ally E now knows.
I think I found your site about a year after you opened it, Anthony, and I have to say I have learned Massive amounts about the climate since then. I am currently considering writing an article of the various Negative feedback research papers you and yours have laid out for us to learn about- something which will Never take place on surrealclimate!

Anthony, I have visited this site at least twice a day since you were doing your Tom Sawyer impressions, painting Stevenson screens various colours of white. Back then CO2 was 365ppm. What attracted me was that you had had the initial thought that all might not be well with those screens. I watched you do the resulting science carefully and methodically, eliminating variables as you went, working meticulously so that at the end of it apples would unquestionably be compared with apples. But the initial idea was key.
Then came the Meteorological Sites project. The organization of that was marvelous, but most important was that you thought of it in the first place. Really, anybody could have done those two projects if they’d thought of them. But nobody had. Just you, Anthony. That original mind of yours is your greatest contribution.
Along the way you have attracted a first-class corps of moderators. [I’ll bet I can say [“snip”] now and get away with it. No? Ah, well.] For that reason, and for all the foregoing reasons, and for a whole bunch of other reasons, I agree with everyone above: take a rest. Trust your loyal readers to behave themselves, and trust your moderators to squish them when they comment inappropriately.
Take a week off, and start on St. Paddy’s day by painting some conservationists green. Make honest people of them!
Just as I mentioned yesterday, Gleick inadvertently sent fence sitters to WUWT and similar blogs. As I also mentioned the ‘success’ of sceptics is because the media are up to their necks in alarmism and people have had enough.
Anthony, there are many more like Ally E. who maybe don’t comment but are relieved that WUWT and similar blogs exist. When I found WUWT I realised that the not the whole world was mad. I too felt confused and alone.
What would we do if it weren’t for the sceptical blogs? Where would we get balanced reporting? Certainly not from the BBC and definitely absolutely never from the extremely bias RICHARD BLACK the activist who is allowed to write for the BBC. Knowing something of Anthony’s operation, it will take a LARGE infusion of sustainable cash for him to take it off wordpress. He has the expertise available, but the scale that WUWT has become, would require a steady, reliable subscription base to pay for its maintenance. As annoying as WP can be when they start tinkering, the platform is mostly stable, and the auto promotion built into it frees Anthony up from from a lot of additional effort. Moderation is a huge part of the work..
Most need to remember and understand that this site is not Anthony’s bread and butter. He runs a successful but constantly challenged meterological support business with employees, that provides him with the ability to play here.
But he has to divide his time heavily, and maintaining and defining the balance between advocacy, family and sustenance is nearly impossible. Everyone thrives on good wishes and warm regards, but they nourish the soul, not the body.
If you all really, truly, believe in the value of this site, then mark your calendar and become a self-driven, silent subscriber. MAKE A POINT of dropping 10, 20, 50, 100 dollars or what ever you can afford in the tip jar EVERY month. Most of us spend more than that a week on frivolous entertainment. Make your hard-earned income work for something truly positive for you, and your kids’ future.
No one should have to carry the burden of holding up the beacons of truth alone. In the face of Big Green, Big Oil and Big Goverment, chip in and help Anthony be part of the army of Big Davids. It’s your future, too. Anthony puts his life into this effort. The rest of us, at the very least, can put in some cash, and make it easier for him to shoulder the burden.

Steady as she goes Cap’n. We are all in awe of the work flow you have managed over the last years. Sometimes things fatigue us, I got accused of ‘doctoring’ someones comment the other day because they did the old wordpress mistake of trapping some of their words between ‘less than’ and ‘more than’ chevrons. No amount of explanation appeased this person or got them to realise what had happened, and the accusations of fraud got worse until I called a halt, telling him:
“If we were paid to take this abuse we’d have to grin and bear it, but since we do what we do for fun and interest, we don’t.”

I started dropping in by accident searching for information on the solar cycle in 2008. It wasn’t long before I had to check-in at WUWT every day. Where else can you find discussions of this quality? Its a unique place. Very focused – yet eclectic within the field of view. Gleick’s manic determination to expose the money and power behind the “organized and coordinated” rebuttal of AGW is evidence you’ve facilitated something “new under the sun.” A worldwide fellowship of not-very-good scientists who come here for love, not money, to collaborate. Collaboration compounds and multiplies the little bit of science we each bring and we all end up knowing and understanding so much more than we did before. We leave “an army of one” with solid facts and we ripple out from here (more unsettling and dispruptive than we imagine) organized, coordinated & armed with that most devestating weapon, the truth.
General Watts, we salute you. (we won’t forget the tip jar)

I too would like to re-iterate Ally’s sentiments. I came to WUWT in 2007, and have tried (and almost succeeded) in reading every article written, including the comments, since then.
What WUWT has done is not just opened my eyes to how mendacious some people can be, it has also opened my eyes to the wonderful world around us, and given me a huge insight into how it all fits together.
You have a unique blog, Anthony, and it is unique because of the way you (and the mods – thanks, guys) have played it straight with people. I always feel like I’m at home here.

Your web site offers an invaluable service in that you frequently link to peer reviewed papers. For people working tangentially in this field it reduces a very onerous task of keeping up to date with the literature. In particular literature that actually asks questions and offers alternative theory.
If you link to a paper, I immediately send the title to our librarian that finds and provides me with a copy on short order. This is very useful as librarians circumvent pay walls and get the articles free.
My biggest problem is that I can’t find space on my desk due to the piles of papers to write on a sticky note or eat my lunch…. soup is the worst.

Among other things WUWT provides a good platform for getting an education in science that is unavailable from government schools. I certainly hope the home schoolers are using it.

I come here everyday, do my homework and listen to the teacher(s) to expand what I know about these great topics..Thanks a whole bunch…teach.

Its not a matter of fixing things that ain’t broke, its a matter of keeping up and compliant. OS/browser/security/privacy/govt/money issues on the web are moving at warp speed. WP has to do the heavy lifting to maintain functional capatibility across many technical AND ideological platforms. Its part of the reason for increase in popularity for cloud serving and platform outsourcing for content. The web as we presently know it for independent free connection for lowly individuals has a finite life. The light at the end of the tunnel for the internet is a train. Between Google and Govt, the writing is on the wall. Enjoy it now, but you will need plan B sooner than you think.
When a student graduated from “Brain Food U” he of course would be called a “Brainiac”!
The true measure of human worth can be found in the family. Work is like a virus. Family is the cure. I’m a partner in a busy demoltion business in Oregon. Next week I am dropping the work hat and taking my family to a VRBO home in a warm climate for 8 days. I expect “problems” when I return. Believe it or not, the demolition business is a bigger soap opera than Climate Science! C’est la vie. I Found WUWT during the weather station analysis days. It has since been my favorite gun in “the war”. Spend time with the cure Anthony. You can bulldoze the problems with ease when you are happy.Thanks for the terrific web site.
Anthony, being old enough to be your . . . older sister . . . I will give you some completely unsolicited advice. It will not be remiss to take a real vacation (as in you do not even read it yourself) from this site. I would recommend at least one week per quarter, which could be saved up to be a whole month per year. There are very competent people who can take over for you for one week in every twelve. You could even leave up a posting which directs people to various other sites for that week (warning those sites beforehand that they may see an increase during that time). You have excellent moderators that can also handle any of us that get out-of-line during an Open Thread Week. You may also consider having some co-editors and co-writers that you start mentoring into positions of authority, who could be trusted to follow your lead.
One of the things that I truly enjoyed when I transitioned from full-time mom to full-time out-of-the-house job, was the ability to have a vacation. A REAL turn-off-the-pager don’t-answer-the-phone vacation. I don’t need to travel, being perfectly happy to simply nap during the day when I’m tired, read some of those old free novels I’ve put in the Kindle (I’m cheap), eat only when I’m hungry, and ignore personal hygiene for several days at a time. But you need whatever your equivalent of a REAL vacation is, and you need it regularly.
Trust me, we’ll be here when you get back . . .

Just in Belgium in the last few days, Henri Masson has gone on the record against the IPCC models, federal congressman David Clarinval has denounced the cost burden to the people of “climate” policies, which has triggered a debate in the federal parliament, with presentations by Istvan Marko and Drieu Godefridi.
Invisible to English speakers, but big events nonetheless.
Anthony: thank you for all you do. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, and do take the time you need to recharge. Like it or not, you’re a global force in the search for truth, and a lot of folks look to you for leadership. For proof of that you need not search beyond this thread with its very rich embroidery of comments. As always, they add a great deal to whatever you say: not necessarily more science (although I learn a great deal from other commenters as well as from you and your guest posters) but unfailingly good humor and new perspective.
I think I discovered you before Climategate 1.0 and, as with many others, this is now my go-to site. Every day, rain or shine. And the cross-links to other sites –of all persuasions, but particularly folks like Steve McIntyre, Bishop Hill, Judith Curry, Jo Nova– are a great resource as well. There is no place like it. Thanks again.

For the past 7 years I have averaged 75 billable hours a week in front of a computer. My survival (burnout avoidance) techniques include strict attention to food, drink, exercise, sleep, regular breaks and a touch of enjoyment:
Food: I avoid sugar and go heavy on veggies like the NFL training camps (seriously).
Drink: I avoid alcohol and soda and go heavy on mineral water (half an ounce a day for every pound you weigh).
Exercise: Use 10-lb weights along with calisthenics 10 minutes twice a day.
Sleep: 5-6 hours a night augmented with a 30-minute nap most days around 3:00 pm (more nap time makes me drowsy the rest of the day yet resting with eyes closed and brain “out of gear” is 90% as good as sleep).
Regular breaks: I detach completely from work one day a week–this is Sunday for me and lets me come back with a clearer perception and greater resolve.
Enjoyment: WUWT is my form of recreation, providing a stimulating break from the grind.
Of course, you have a family to attend to and I’m a single “empty-nester”. But a single day off will not prevent burnout–you are in this for the long haul, Anthony–maybe until you pass on (preferably when you’re 95 and not sooner), so you need to pace yourself with discipline and recognition of your mortality. Computer work slowly kills and you must optimize your contribution to the world by taking care of yourself. Please find a burnout avoidance regimen that works for you and stick with it.
So, we learn that real world superheros can get burned out just like us regular human beings. Relax, recharge and relish in the fact that you are changing the world.
Anthony also mostly a lurker, but I have been reading and learning from your blog for probably some 4 to 5 years now. I also recommend it to all my family and friends and even my business colleagues (Aerospace and Defense contractor) as the very best of the science blogs. You and the rest of the science guys here have taught us much and we are very grateful. You guys are a gift.
Just to add my sayings to the long, long list of accolades. This morning I opened the Houston Chronicle to t he editorial page. Still on the AGW bandwagon. WUWT is a welcome relief. Thanks, Anthony, for a bit of fresh air in this interglacial warming period.

I have been a skeptic for a long time, even before the infamous Scientific America editorial “science defends itself against the skeptical environmentalist”. I have a PhD in materials engineering and quite a lot of experience in using computer models, which I learnt to thoroughly distrust.
Your efforts are truly stupendous. I have wondered many times before how you manage to run such a superb blog, a business and a family, so I am not surprised if I you feel a bit run down. Please rest and get better. We need you. You are our beacon of hope!!

When I started examining the question of CAGW four years ago, I discovered WUWT early on. I was quickly impressed by your willingness to discuss and argue the science. All I ever saw on the Pro-CAGW sites was that the argument was over and the the issue was settled – a total unwillingness to engage in the science. Thanks so much Anthony, keep up the good work.

Been a fan for about 5 years now, from Kate’s small dead animals blog.
Today my morning coffee was in my WUWT coffee mug, and my ‘homepage is here’ so this is the very first blog I check every day and all day long as I get all the emails too – don’t want to miss anything! Hubby loves his t-shirt – wears it proudly.
We love science, reality, facts, the truth – rare to find these days – thankfully it’s here.
I seldom post here as – I’m a sponge here – elsewhere I’m big poster opposing CAGW with facts. Facts that I get from here. Actually takes me some time to wad through data that is far beyond my level of education and comprehension (but that’s improving too, because of this site!) – so it’s in the comments where everything gets disseminated so that I can glean the facts and truths to articulate it elsewhere.
For the most part I find the average person knows or has a strong inkling this is all BS, but they can’t explain why – then they get bowled over by fasle data being screamed out by the alarmists. Then there’s the whole political aspect of it…grrrrr. So finding a good way to explain this in terms people can understand that they in turn can explain themselves is key to tearing down this lie.
On a personal note: Some years ago before I was even on the net 2002/3 iirc, my daughter came from first year high school with the story that ‘Greenland’ was all a propaganda lie by the governments of that era -“never was warm – all a gigantic lie”. We were rather shocked by this so sat her down and explained some hard facts about that nonsense right on the spot (at that point I, myself was one who was submissively going along with this ‘green is good’ thinking – but you can’t just LIE about history – that really ticked me off!!!) Thankfully she was able to see the truth and continues to question the ‘status-quo’ on everything and especially anything mainstream media blows out now. Scared me how hard they tried to pit her against what real science is. She graduated without being swayed to the dark side, thankfully.
Now she’s another reader of WUWT and another voice out there within her peer group, stating facts instead of propaganda.
Thank you Anthony, thank you for doing this tremendous task and all our best from our family to yours. Please take all the time off you require and then some!

Not really, but I saw something like that in a movie once where people had someone they respected… and loved. They were inspired by his dedication to what was right and his courage in opposing evil, tyranny and lawlessness. They supported and followed him to such an extent that they were willing to take up and continue his cause no matter what. They learned from him and realized they were the better for it.
Such people are rare. Anthony Watts is one of those rarities. I come here every day to learn and be inspired and challenged.

You should check out the Goodreads blog interface. I don’t know if it is publicly available (and I don’t know if it supports latex, sadly) but it is butt-kicking good in other ways — preview feature, edit feature. The one thing you have to do to use it is set up an account (which is free) but I don’t really mind that.
There has to be something out there that at least competes with wordpress.

A big thank-you from me too. I found WUWT just in time (BC) and have visited pretty well daily ever since. I had been struggling to understand why so many people apparently with far better scientific credentials than myself clearly believed in a theory that did not reflect my experience of climate (after more than 50 years of personal observation), nor my knowledge or understanding of climate in either the historic or the geological past. Finding WUWT showed me I wasn’t alone. I’m no scientist and some of the techie stuff goes clear over my head, but the fact that you had the guts to create this site and have gathered so many high quality contributors gives me hope for the future. What really gets my goat is the true believers’ fallacy, that because they do what they do to “save the planet”, anyone who disagrees in the slightest must want to destroy it. It’s uphill work to counter that attitude, but together we’ll get there. Just give yourself a break occasionally – you deserve to be around to get your share of the plaudits when the AGW house of cards finally falls down. And when we are both long gone and the history books write up AGW as the weirdest, least explicable, potentially most economically disastrous case ever of international mass hysteria, WUWT will be in the footnotes as one of the few asylums for the sane in these dark days indeed.

It is my homepage too. I greatly appreciate, fellow readers, the links you provide to the original papers and the other links to interesting related materials. WUWT is my prime one-stop science shop. Engadget is the only other place that gets my clicks.
I took heat for years as a climate catactrophe skeptic and have been on the right side all along. The reason is tha I was trained early on to seek to see for myself. Learning to read science papers is not difficult. After a while, spotting BS comes naturally.
It was said a day or so ago that if the CAGW scam ended, there would be no reason for WUWT to exist. Not so. We can be positive and share. It is not only about demonstrating the falsity of bent ideas. It is about instilling a culture of international collaboration for truth and proof. And it is succeeding in the face of great odds.
Anthony, your achievement at WUWT is immense. I have been a regular (almost daily) visitor for several years. I knew the warmist ideology and secular religion was built on sand. When I found WUWT I was able to acquire the detailed knowledge and ideas to combat the warmists. Trouble is that warmist believers fall back on authority and propaganda and never seem interetsed or able to debate the facts and science. Please, please keep going and be encouraged. When the going got tough Winston Churchill urged everyone to KBO (keep buggering on)…
Once people learn the truth by reading blogs like WUWT, they can’t listen to the CAGW lies without bursting out into very angry laughter at the fraudulent bias of the rest of the Media.

heartfelt thanks from a longtime reader here, yes, at least twice daily except the times I needed a break so badly that the only thing stopped me was my telephone provider going crazy.
The only reason you’re not seeing so many posts from me is because I’m working hard on a wiki for us all to create. Now I do have my own point of view which is quite strong in certain directions, but my passion is to create a wiki that everyone else will eventually literally push me out of… because it’s fired everyone up and the whole skeptics community is busy making it their own.
But for that to happen, as I see things, the “release” wiki needs to reach a level where the potential is sufficiently manifest.
One big reason for doing this wiki is to develop a moving-on point from WUWT, as we all grow wise, scientifically informed, politically aware, stronger, and still passionate to right the current science iniquity. Insofar as “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” I often think of WUWT when looking for conveying the right spirit in this wiki – it is not Wikipedia after all.
Anyone who would like to help it in its current alpha/beta stage, drop me an email. It’s still firmly under wraps but the plan is to work towards “barnraising” release. Wikimedia techies especially welcome.

Anthony, if you don’t hear it as often as you should, we, your blog readers, very much appreciate both the blog, and all the work you put into it. The attitudes here, the honest questioning, as compared to the stifling hubris at RealClimate and SkepticalScience, DotEarth, BadAstronomy, to mention only a few, can be edifying and inspiring. And you always link to the important warmists, but most of them DON’T link back to you.
If you need to take breaks, take them as often as you need. If you haven’t got your health…
I came across the WUWT blog awhile before Climategate, and frankly enjoyed the random learnings and musings (a laymans point of view) from AT and I miss that. WUWT since then has grown exponentially into an anti-global warming alternative that is sadly needed. I applaud Anthony and the many others here taking up the cause. I too like Ally have woken up to the world and the politics of government control and in my own small way have joined as a Preciecnt chairman/committieman. Here locally I am part of a TEA party group to stop our City (Arlington, Texas) from subscribing to Agenda21, it is unbelievably difficult to get out the entrenched climate fanatics, but we all must slog and be persistent to rid us of this cancer. Again cheers to all the people here at WUWT.

Knowledge is better than gold although I feel obligated to contribute a little bit of my gold occasionaly, the education this site provides is priceless. I suspect there are several science teachers that refer to this site often.

WUWT is wonderful the way it ties togther the struggle against irrationality. I also visit it every day. Without WUWT, it would be so much harder to keep track of the shenaniagns of the warmistas as well as progress of the rational skeptical argument. The web is a bleak wasteland of opionated nonsense, but WUWT stands out as a shining example of how good it can be. Thanks Anthony and I hope yours spirits pick up soon. You have made a difference.
WUWT is a beacon of light in a world that has been brainwashed over the last 30 years by mainstream media and “scientists” mainly motivated in projects prolonging their own self interests. The turning point has started and we need WUWT and others to fight on our behalf to ensure that everybody is aware of our weather and the sponsored propoganda determined to maintain their stronghold. Capernicus, Galileo and others spring to mind, but the truth will eventually outshine.

I found out about WUWT from being a reader of Steve Milloy’s Junkscience blog, which did all this stuff way before it became even slightly acceptable in polite company. From memory, first looked at Junkscience in 1999 or so.
Anyway, Anthony, remember the words of Samuel Taylor Coleridge in ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’:
And now there came both mist and snow,

Anthony, I had a similar revelation when I first stumbled onto WUWT about 5 years ago. I was amazed to meet other skeptics, and truly astounded by the knowledge and intelligence of the commentators. I have been checking WUWT at least twice a day since then. I’ve learned so much here, it’s just amazing. Also the links here, both posted by you and those posted by your commentators, have lead me to some amazing places. I’ve purchased and read dozens of books that were discussed here. In fact, I now have a (mostly full) bookcase reserved only for climate and global warming books. Your excellent website has changed my life for the better, and I really appreciate all the work you do. Thank you.
PS I second what Molon Labe says about wheat, and I also highly recommend “Wheat Belly”. Cutting out the gluten made an amazing difference in my life. Thyroid problems slowly went away, and my mood greatly improved.
Thanks for this site. As well as a welcome retreat from alarmist pap you provide the knowledge and tools to take the argument back out to them. I regularly use your resource to slap down rabid warmistas on other forums I frequent.

WUWT: For several years now: 1st on the list of ”go to” places 4 info on the CAGW – climate change – etcetera saga. Thanks 4 all U have done, and continue 2 do. Be careful not to ”extend” too far beyond your personal performance envelope limits; 1 person can only do so much; you’ve done more than your share. Hang in there; at a reasonable & prudent ”speed”.
Another lurker here, my dad showed me CA back when I was a teenager in college and I found wuwt shortly thereafter, and a love story began. I agree w/ everyone, it is like a drug I come here as much as possible, and it feels like a home where intelligent respectful people who are on the same page, trying to accept that we don’t know everything and working from there. Never arrogance. Wuwt that changed my life, changed what I want to be in life. Switched my major to geology, but I just dream of doing work like this site does.
This is exactly how I felt when I found WUWT, I no longer felt alone in a world that seemed full of mindless drones, I felt like the dark ages where approaching yet again, now I have hope because of what is being done here and on similar sites.
