CRU's Phil Jones plays Wheel of Fortune "Before and After"

I was looking through some CG2 emails today for something else, and I came across this one. Email #3538. It is funny. For those who don’t know what the “before and after” portion of the game is about, this Yahoo answers might be helpful.

Here’s the relevant portion of the email (bold mine):

A: <jacopo.pasotti@xxxxx.xx>

Oggetto: Re: AW: Re: PS AW: Fwd: Re: more questions

Jacopo,

I’m not going to comment on your text, because

your report is awful.  I thought you wanted a balanced

report. What you’ve written isn’t. You’ve not understood

any of what was said on the Real Climate Audit web site.

You have several words wrong and what you say doesn’t

make sense at times. But you don’t seem to want to

discuss proper climate science.

Phil

Heh. Proof positive McIntyre really got into Jones head.

Tom Nelson has a relevant email also:

Email 1342, June 2008, Phil Jones on his own keen mental powers: “I get people coming up to me now saying we met in 199? and have no recall of our meeting – sometime no recall of even going to the meeting where I was supposed to have met them!”

Email 1342

This is fine. I don’t remember talking to you at IUGG in Boulder ! I am approachable though and have talked to lots of people. I get people coming up to me now saying we met in 199? and have no recall of our meeting – sometime no recall of even going to the meeting where I was supposed to have met them!

I knew the guy had halfheimers, email 1342 just confirms it. Maybe he’s past half.

Haha! I love those Freudian slips; that’s how you really know what’s on a person’s mind.
And it’s certainly reassuring to read that Phil Jones is an “approachable” chap. In his valued opinion, anyway.

And our Phil is on a salary bracket of £54133 to £125000! You don’t get many of him to the pound.

Oh, just got the joke. Still would like to know what Jacobo said 🙂 REAL CLIMATE AUDIT !!!!

February 5, 2012 12:45 pm

Well at least he’s honest about ‘something’!

February 5, 2012 12:47 pm

Real Climate Audit! As he trying to correct some other putz! That is so rich!

I don’t think this type of ad hominem attack on Phil Jones is justified. We all of us make stupid mistakes in emails (though I agree conflating the two blogs is quite funny) but in themselves they say nothing about our professional competence. By contrast, commenting on the email where he admitted he could not calculate a trend using Excel, which reflected on his professional competence, was valid.

Hey! Leave Phil Jones alone, he is doing a wonderful job.
Just been reading about it on the Watts up with Skeptical Science website.

Apparently, he also gets to define “proper” climate science. I wonder who assigned him that responsibilty?

Looks like jacopo should not be publishing in English.
It would be funny if Jones had said Real Climate Audit several times in his e-mails and if jacopo had gone to Climate Audit by accident at Jones suggestion. That might explain why Jones did not like what he was reading.

Yeah, unless you’re a non-teammate and looking to replicate something he’s published. Then you’re just a contrarian trying to find something wrong…

I think the article was published in Science 11 January 2008 Vol. 319 no. 5860 p. 144 but I can not be absolutely sure because it is pay walled.

“You have several words wrong and what you say doesn’t
make sense . . .”
Sounds like a snippet from a conversation at a nursing home.
For added bite, just throw in “sonny” or “missy” after “wrong”.

Real Climate Audit… how appropriate that the word is oxymoron.

Give Jones a break, he’s jetting around the world to prove to politicians that only him and them should be jetting around the world.

Monty Pyton knew about this long before you guys.. Refer to this documentary on Village Idiots. If you listen carefully you’ll hear that they do their degrees at UEA.

It is an exposure rather that an attack, and as such, quite justified.
If you want to see attacks, look up any well-known Skeptic on sourcewatch.org or wiki

Ron,
Its not so much ad homenim as it is an insight into how this guy thinks. He’s mad as hell and like most of us, gets irrational when that happens. He’s mad, because he isn’t able to falsify the mounting evidence that he is plain and simply – wrong. His reply also demonstrates this because he doesn’t even bother explaining WHY he though it was unbalanced.
The fact that such a slip comes out when he is trying to tear a strip out of someone else more than makes it justified…….And hillarious!

This is one of those great trail head posts that leads to other interesting topics. In reading the post, I topic jogged to geomagnetic associations with weather and climate. There I was reminded of archeomagnetic jerks which immediately put me in mind of dendrochronology jerks in the news. That in turn made me think of the bristle cone pine that made history. It seems fitting that somebody somewhere should make a hockey stick from a bristle cone tree limb.

And on a related note, pertaining to Jones and “peer-review” (as demonstrated by another E-mail from CG2) …
There once was a scientist named Phil
Whose opinions of skeptics were shrill
To bring his cause to fruition
He would use intuition
And into data or code never drill.
Phil Jones keeps peer review process humming … by using “intuition”

It seems we stood and talked like this before…
We looked at each other in the same way then…
But i can’t remember where, or when…
The clothes you’re wearing are the clothes you wore…
The smile you are smiling you were smiling then,
But i can’t remember where, or when…
Some things that happen
For the first time,
Seem to be happening again,
And so it seems that we have met before
And laughed before,
And loved before…
But whoooo knows…
Where or when?

Beth – It has been some years since Mann has wore clothes. He has been as naked as a jaybird, for many years now. People only perceive clothing that isn’t really there. GK
