Al Gore games the climate

After Gore’s 24 hours of climate reality back in September, I thought that he’d pretty much hit rock bottom with faking the science in it. Even Nature thought it was dumb. I thought we couldn’t possibly see anything stupider than that. I was wrong.

Al Gore has announced a partnership with PSFK to make a series of propaganda climate games. Here’s what he has to say about it:

Games are the new normal. The popularity and proliferation of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices—coupled with a wide variety of social networking platforms—provide fertile ground for the incorporation of games into our lives in fresh, new ways. Whether it’s playing Scrabble on your iPhone or Farmville on Facebook, now millions fill the interstitial moments of their lives with the simple fun that these programs and apps provide.

As games have become ubiquitous, both the private and public sectors have begun to seriously look at the role that gamification can play in their work. Game design, techniques and mechanics, have something to teach those of us who are seeking to engage people on issues of social importance.

In the forty years that I have worked to build public awareness of the need to urgently solve the climate crisis, I have always sought out new methods of communication— from my slideshow on three Kodak carousels (which evolved from an actual slideshow to a multi-media presentation on Keynote)—to my work on An Inconvenient Truth, the “Live Earth” global concerts, “24 Hours of Reality” on the web, and an app for the iPhone and iPad called Our Choice. Exploring the interplay of gamification and social change is a fascinating challenge, and one that I have been exploring for the last three years. Clearly, there is tremendous potential for advocates to reach entirely new audiences with games that are engaging, fun, and motivational.

Recently, I was introduced to Piers Fawkes and the wonderful team at PSFK and for the past several months The Climate Reality Project, PSFK and I have collaborated in an open source “Gaming for Good” Challenge. I hope that you will enjoy the results of this collaboration and that it will encourage you to think creatively about social impact games.

Here’s a video where Al hypes the new battle for young minds:

He’s got a whole gaming racket. For example:

CLIMATE HEROES. GET READY TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Climate Heroes is an online game that capitalizes on the long-standing role of superheroes as beacons of goodness in our lives. This game gives users the opportunity to become a superhero and take up the fight to solve the planet’s climate issues. The future of the planet is in your hands. Create your profile and save the world! Users are able to select from a number of superhero avatars, such as Mr. Smog and Miss Waste, all of which are visually engaging and representative of a specific climate challenge. Users can capture climate abuse using their mobile phones and upload photos or share news items. Those that do so with regular frequency and take on the role of ‘influencer’ will be engaged by the Organization to do a public mission. A sample mission might be to organize a flash mob that sheds light on a specific issue.

CLIMATE TRAIL

There’s a lot of information and disinformation surrounding climate

change. But much of the disinformation can be debunked by following the

“money trail” of companies sponsoring the research and publication that

disseminates this false data. How do we encourage the public to think for

themselves and question the sources of their information? By encouraging

them to play “Climate Trail”, a simple text-based game that mirrors the

functionality of classic online games like “Oregon Trail”.

At the start of the game, each player is given a leadership role in a

community with set levels of renewable resources, atmospheric levels, and

other indicators of climate health. The goal is to reach the year 2036 with a

healthy and livable community. As game play proceeds, players are asked

questions like “Do you want clean coal or wind power to be your town’s main

source of power” or “Do you want to clear 10,000 acres of forest to create

more farmland?” Correct answers help boost resource levels while wrong

answers impact negatively on community health. After each answer, players

are also presented with information about choices that were made in the

real world (e.g. Portland, Oregon switched to natural gas for city vehicles

and reduced emissions 30%). Users will also be able to share answers across

social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

Once the initial levels have been completed, players are promoted

to a higher rank with responsibilities for larger and more complex

communities. As they progress to higher leadership levels they are also

greeted with new challenges (e.g. “Lobbyists want to meet with you to

discuss new vehicle standards.”).

Game play either ends when resource goals are reached on a global scale

or climate change has reached unacceptable levels and the community is

no longer sustainable. Players will be able to compare their performances

against real life politicians. They will also be given tips on where they

went wrong in the game (e.g. “You believed reports about Clean Coal

but research was actually funded by Mining Companies”) highlighting

both the money trail and the need for independent consumer research

on high impact environmental and climate issues.

CLIMATE REALITY PATROL

Idea: Social media activism meets gaming and rewards

Concept: Instantly tag your comments with Climate Reality keyword facts to

earn badges and rewards.

How it Works:

Climate Reality creates and hosts a database of short-form facts (1–2 sentences

each) tied to “hot topic” keywords. Each description includes a link to optionally

find a deeper resource of related information.

Users create a profile on The Climate Reality Patrol website, activate the browser

plugin, then begin patrolling the web, looking to dispel unfounded environmental

information in articles and comments from media sites, politicians, brands,

celebrities, blogs, etc.

Wherever commenting is allowed, users who’ve activated Climate Reality Patrol

can post responses including keywords that automatically pull facts served from

The Climate Reality database. The keywords are presented and activated via a

menu that appears as they type (similar to an advanced spell-check).

Other users who view these comments can hover over any of the activated keywords

to find a pop-up fact window that includes the respective “quick fact” and a link to

more info.

Each post would include #ClimateRealityPatrol and/or @ClimateRealityPatrol at the end by default, to brand the posts.

The Climate Reality Patrol website tracks user stats and features a leaderboard for all user rankings. A Facebook app displays rankings on individual user’s profiles.

Levels of “Climate Reality Activist” badges are awarded based on the amount

of false information a user has dispelled (based on the number of keywords they’ve posted). Rewards could include special recognition, invitation to events, or entry into exclusive contests.

This one takes the cake for silliness:

REALiTREE (pronounced RE-AL-i-TREE)

Realitree is a digital manifestation of our local environment and the

role that we are playing in sustaining its wellbeing. It is a game played

by different groups in many places. Individuals, teams, communities,

cities and even countries compete against their counterparts via Twitter,

Facebook and through other social tools.

A Realitree is like a huge Tamagotchi for which thousands of people care.

It is a massive projection showing a digital image of a tree, complete with leaves, branches, roots, sky and earth. Realitree functions like a real tree, in that it will thrive and suffer according to the health of its surrounding enviroment.

Realitree’s environment takes into account news media, so news stories that are in conflict with climate reality will reflect negatively on its health. Realitree will expose agents of the fossil fuel industry who propagate smear, innuendo, criminal hacking and leaking of out-of context snippets or lies.

Each Realitree will be fed two distinct types of data:

• Current, statistical environmental data about the surrounding community as well as news and insights about political and corporate forces working against the climate’s good health.

• Real-time updates using tweets and the various social networking activity of the Realitree’s caretakers. Anyone can participate in keeping it alive and thriving through their real world deeds and virtual nutrients, delivered through their social networking activity.

As their networks grow, they will be represented as the intertwined roots of the tree, keeping it alive, fed and guarded against attack.

The overall “health” of Realitree will be on constant display. With good activities, it will grow, multiply and sway appreciatively. With bad deeds, Realitree will appear to shake and wither. It will always display climate reality truths, news, facts and shares from participants throughout its community and all over the world. We envision “planting” 300 Realitrees in cities and towns across the globe.

Each caretaker will play on different levels and earn points by doing

different things. A single tweet, for example, may garner one point, while a Foursquare check-in to a “green” business or using clean energy at home will gain more points. On the Realitree website, through Facebook connections, people can form teams, compete against friends and measure their contributions to helping reverse the effects of climate change. On another level, Realitrees (planted in New York City, for example) could compete against every other city where Realitrees are placed.

Corporations would be allowed the opportunity to play and even remedy earlier misdeeds by correcting falsehoods and donating money to pay for real initiatives in winning communities. Those that create the healthiest environment for their Realitree win the game.

And finally, Climate Reality hits Farmville:

DESTINATION REALITY: FARMVILLE

It’s a funny thing when there are more virtual farmers than real ones on Earth.

Real life farmers see the effects of climate change, but do virtual ones? Let’s

partner with Farmville to drop a dose of Reality on the 31 million people who

log on daily to tend to their plants, harvest, and redeem gold coins for seeds,

supplies, and fuel.

We could partner with Zynga to plan the best way to expose crops to weather

and wind and offer The Climate Reality Project branded goods to help

Farmers mitigate and adapt to unexpected weather conditions. Goods such

as wind-powered tractors, windmills, jackets to shield you from the elements,

seeds for heartier crops like organic cassava and chickpeas, decorations like a

Climate Reality flag, rainwater collection troughs and green ring tags for your

livestock. We’d want to do this in a way that presents a challenge to Farmville

players, and makes it possible via gameplay mechanics to heal the destruction

caused by Climate events, illustrating that through action, we can change the

current trajectory.

Wind-powered tractors?

And while I didn’t expect to find such a ridiculous thing when I went looking, amazingly, some physics challenged fool has actually made a concept image:

From the website, the description:

Windmill-powered electric farm tractors.

The picture above shows a windmill-powered electric farm tractor. The tractor is shown with it’s windmill extended for recharging. When the tractor is parked, the tractor’s windmill is extended on a telescopic mast. The tractor remains parked like this with it’s windmill extended, for several hours. While it is parked, the windmill turns wind energy into electrical energy. The electricity produced by the windmill is stored in batteries located inside the tractor.

No, really. Somebody thinks this is the farming of the future.

And there’s more. Al has plans for farm animals,  blogs, chatrooms, and school kids.

Read all about it here in this report gaming-for-good-psfk-111202215545-phpapp01 (PDF 8.5 MB)

I predict it will be even less successful than Al’s previous sideshow attraction, because lets face it, the games are stupid and without challenge.

One short phrase really jumped off the page when I read it.
Climate abuse
Climate abuse? Is living an ordinary life in the 21st century now akin to child abuse?
The warmists use ‘denier’ (taken from ‘holocaust denier’) to denigrate their critics. Now we are ‘climate abusers’, to be equated with child abusers?
Gore is nothing short of despicable. I’ll have a good laugh when all his ‘Realitrees’ wither and die.

So that’s different to believing reports from IPCC that came from Greenpeace? Ad hominem attacks in children’s games should get them an R rating — adults only, content may corrupt.

The carbon content of all living things on earth (including you Al) came from atmospheric CO2 (Plant Food) and given the current volume in the atmosphere at less than 400ppmv, earths atmosphere is CO2 (Plant Food) impoverished…….every living thing on earth, including you Al, would benifit greatly with more of it. It will be an ‘invaluable resource’ for science classes just as the absurd Gore movie was. How does he keep getting away with this drivel?

January 12, 2012 2:31 am

The real issue from this article is in fact how amazing and brilliant such propaganda has become. When the wall came down, we though ok this is great and socialism is dead. Kind of put us all to sleep.
It took us a good 20+ years of sleeping until we realized that all those socialists and their agenda’s had gone into the environmental movement. They really did get a real free ride and were under the radar for years. If you think about this, it really only been from about the time of the global warming swindle movie that the big connection between socialism and the AGW movement was made. Now this socialist connection is well understood among the average reader here.
Moving such propaganda out of the press into games and media masquerading as games shows several things:
They have money
They use that money to hire VERY VERY smart people
They seek out VERY smart people
They use new technologies to their advantage.
The posts here lamenting how silly this stuff is are 100% missing the point of how serious and how dangerous such propaganda can be.
This type of propaganda flies under the radar of the press, and even what the schools are teaching in their textbooks and science class. Today armed with the internet MORE parents and people are very much scrutinizing what is being taught to the easy formed minds of our youth.
Use of money and smart people and toss in a ready made technology conduit into the “EASY” formed minds of this young generation can buy these folks YEARS of support for their perverted agendas.
And MORE important is such new game and content distribution systems tend to fly under the press and even most of us here.
If we cannot fight in that battle field, then we not in the war anymore are we? Troops standing in a another field doing nothing are of no use here.
While we can all have fun laughing at this stuff, I find such incredible and intelligently directed propaganda very distributing.
This type of approach is smart and is armed and built with lot of money and as noted flies under the radar of most traditional media, and even that of the general internet.
As noted, perhaps (we hope) these games are lame, but the idea of doing this is an extremely smart move on their part.

January 12, 2012 3:11 am

It appears that Gore claims “In the forty years that I have worked to build public awareness of the need to urgently solve the climate crisis,” but if that were true it would mean that back in 1971/2 he was working to build public awareness on climate related matters, and at that time, the issue was already urgent. Really??
Rhetorically, I ask myself whether that claim is true since if it were true, he was very much ahead of his time. Further, what problem was he seeking to address since at that time, climate cooling was more the rage?
Is this another example of Gore’s questionable claims to fame such as the assertion that he invented the internet?? Some might consider that he is once more exagerating and/or being economical with the truth? Me, I am just wandering.

Antonia
January 12, 2012 3:15 am

The scary thing is that Gore is right: “Games are the new normal. The popularity and proliferation of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices—coupled with a wide variety of social networking platforms—provide fertile ground for the incorporation of games into our lives in fresh, new ways. Whether it’s playing Scrabble on your iPhone or Farmville on Facebook, now millions fill the interstitial moments of their lives with the simple fun that these programs and apps provide.”
The word ‘fun’ says it all. In the English-speaking countries for decades children have been ‘educated’ with a bottom line of ‘fun’ instead of an expectation of hard work as still happens in Asia.
I’ve read that application, drills and work are also expected in France. Even in the lowest grades French teachers will tear up messy work. Obviously they’re not big on the ‘self-esteem’ craze that has polluted the Anglosphere.
Esteem is only ever granted by others to people because of their talents, character or achievements. Esteem is earned, never claimed. Only idiots esteem themselves and only idiotic parents complain about their children’s “lack of self esteem”.

(We both know that correlation is not causation, that unusual weather is not evidence of the cause, that man only emits about 3% of the total annual CO2 emission, that historically CO2 increased AFTER temperature in the ice cores and that water vapor causes the majority of the greenhouse effect.)

So we have the age old good vs. evil storyline – research (science) done by the evil ones is always bogus, as opposed to that done by the good, which is always pure, accurate and wholesome. The science itself is secondary, as are the findings. In effect the correct answer is already established and cannot be challenged – very unscientific! Note also the “redeeming” 2nd chance “tips” built in to “re-educate” the “beliefs” of the wayward and the misinformed. We are the truth – it is forbidden to have impure thoughts. Do not think – trust.

This brings to mind something I wrote about climate irony:
Those who purport to love nature the most actually fear it the most, and are in the midst of a campaign to “control” it via carbon modulation.
Those who most need plentiful and affordable carbon-based fuels, i.e. all those living in the Third World (in India, China, Africa, South America, and rural Appalachia) are the ones the climate elite would deprive of carbon-based fuels.
The statement that “the science is in” is inherently ironic. The science is never in, and saying so reveals an antipathy for science.

First, games are not new. He says there’s a recent proliferation. There isn’t. They have found games in Egyptian tombs from 4000 years ago. Believe it or not, before television and smart phones people would get together in evengins and play games like Bridge, chess, checkers, etc. I remember my grandmother had Tuesday evening as “Bridge Night”. My grandfather’s excuse to take me and get out of the house. In the 19th century there were monthly periodicals of games and pastimes.
Second, one would hope games engage the fantasy aspect of the human mind, not the reality aspect, otherwise we are in trouble with the popularity of First Person Shooter games and Ffantasy Roll Playing Games. Luckily the majority of people don’t learn that it’s okay to go on a rampage and shoot up everyody in sight. These games have show to have a positive effect on eye-hand coordination and general mental apptitude unrelated to the specific content of the game.(e.g. you develop better mental agility but you don’t learn to kill people)
Third, just because silly games like “Angry Birds” (which I myself really liked) achieve mass popularity doesn’t mean a silly Climate game will achieve that same popularity. Few games become popular. One could argue that they become popular because they are inherently fun, new, or novel, or some other reason Is climate propaganda inherently fun, new, or novel? I highly doubt it.
My prediction: Giant fail.

He should have a wood gassification tracor instead. It is carbon neutral because it uses wood or biomass. They actually exist (you can find examples on Youtube) and the DOE put out a “how to” manual back in the 70’s on how to build them which you can get free from various places on the internet. I have the manual and plan to build one for my old Ford 8n as a novelty piece. The only problems with them are risks of blowing up and Carbon Monoxide poisoning. I remember back some 15-20 years ago, there was Sim-Earth. The goal was to evolve a species from a single cell to sentient beings capable of leaving the earth. The problem was that once the species became sentient, everything that happened from then on made “Gaia” mad… that is, until they built rocketships and left. That made “gaia” very happy…

We should have thought of this idea. Imagine what will happen when millions of people are faithfully tending their Realitree but it withers because of “climate change”. Everyone will be able to see for themselves that, while the alarmist media reports have described conditions that kill trees, they can go outside and the real versions are still there. Obviously the media reports are wild exaggerations.
Also, I don’t play Farmville, but my teenage daughters seem to enjoy it. They cry foul whenever anything hurts their crops, including their own neglect, so I doubt they’ll blindly accept negative inputs from global warming. They’re much more likely to howl in protest and correctly observe that extra CO2 should be incorporated into the game to make their crops healthier.
I’ve already seen how inaccurate these games can be. I mean, who puts a Yeti and Penguin in the same ecosystem?

Actually a legit climate game would be interesting and educational. The game could simply be a medeical RPG where the average person was typically cold and hungry, eating porridge and working the fields by hand. Forget the tractor. You’d have an army of people in burlap armed with scythes. You could structure it with all sorts of fun options. For example, your plough horse died and your kids were all killed in a war. You and your aging wife are alone, cold, and hungry. You can pick freeze to death, starve to death, or use fossil fuels to get food and warmth.

how do you get the materials to make all these renewable items and transmission equipment?
I believe games would be positive feedback? Increases ‘education’, takes up time so people aren’t doing other things, which also is another population reducer. I do wonder which persons are in it for which reasons: power, truely believe environment is in danger, for redistribution of wealth, or help initiate population awareness/control (Malthusian or not). There are some that believe level of wealth correlates to population replacement rate, I’ve only found info as far as the 1970’s, so ‘all the above’ is a valid option.

It’s an interesting thing, a game is actually a model.
A games has a set of rules, starting conditions and a set of things(decision points) where the player can intervene. Then there is a time limit, or a set of victory conditions. Nowadays it is possible to play games on computers and so we get to use AI, If we set the AI to play against the AI, we get a deterministic type of game that may have a few randomizers in to give the impression of intelligence.
Those climate models that we hear so much about are actually nothing more that deterministic games.
Games do have a useful role, in training , for example, as well as entertainment, but noone in the real world confuses the game with the reality – except in climate science

I wouldn’t be so sure that this is a loser from the start. This will clearly be aimed at school kids who are heavily indoctrinated. This is social networking taken a few steps into the religious experience complete with rewards of future indulgences. These guys know what they are doing. They are confident of their approach because we send our kids to them every day and have zero control over what they do with them. Suzuki is a prime example of this effort, only 10 to 15 years ahead. If St. Suzuki wants to address his deciples he can do so unmolested by truth or parental control. As long as folks give over all aspects of a child’s upbringing they are doomed to reep the fields of poisoned crops they have sown.

> Increase CO2 levels
Your Realitree responds to the plant food in the air and begins growing again.

Your Realitree likes the lengthened growing seasons and grows faster.

Your Realitree responds to the nitrogen fertilizer and grows more quickly.

How about a game called “Treemometer”. You land on Yamal and draw a card that tells you what your tree rings are like and then you throw your dice to decide whose statistical technique gets used to calculate the global temperature over a thousand years from your one tree. There is only one number on the die and one technique allowed. So the secret is that the result is the same no matter what the rings look like. But no one else knows that. And your job throughout the game is to hide this truth from the other players. That sounds like a game to me.

Think about what they’re actually promoting here: out-of-context, randomly gathered photos purporting to show “climate abuse”, coupled with tools they intend to be used to bring together what they themselves refer to as a “mob”. Also, their “influencer” bit is actually about identifying those most engaged/enraged by their propaganda, and the “public missions” are to see what these “influencers” are willing to do.

“There’s a lot of information and disinformation surrounding climate
change. But much of the disinformation can be debunked by following the
“money trail” of companies sponsoring the research and publication that
disseminates this false data. ”
That’s for sure. Let’s look at the money trail of a well known high-end ‘greenie’ PR firm in Vancouver interviewed by the CBC a couple of mornings ago. The interviewer was all snarky about the Canadian Minsiter saying that environmental extremists were trying to kill resource development in Canada (referring to the oil sands and the pipeline to the coast in particular). So it was going to be a pretty soft interview with the professional PR enviro firm. It went something like this:
CBC: Is it true you are finded by organisations (pressure groups/special interests) in the US?
PR: We only get about 30% of our funding from the US.
CBC: Were you paid to oppose the development of the Alberta oil sands?
PR: We only received $3.6 m for that purpose. We are spending less than $1m per year.
!
Now, any media person with half a lick of sense would seize the moment to follow this admission to its logical conclusion. Not so, the brawny CBC. Of the mountain of money this bunch receives, Ms PR in Vancouver is spending, I calculate, about $17,000 per week for 4 years solely to demonise the processing of tar sands and the pipeline to the coast. That’s right: a Canadian pressure group admits being funded by US interests to destroy a Canadian industrial project. The conclusion that the Canadian Minister is correct was immediately obvious, by the words of Ms PR herself.
I understand it is the largest industrial project under development on the planet. It will help secure the delivery of oil to several Asian coutries (the US greens having killed their own pipeline to the same on-shore source). China, Japan and Korea were mentioned as destinations.
So, yeah – follow the money. The US wants to limit oil supplies to China – that is obvious. The pipeline to the BC coast is critical to creating an alternative to supplies from Iran – presently under the gun. Kill the pipeline and capture the (potential, vast) supply by denial of service.
Canadian pressure groups are being funded (lavishly in my view) to oppose the development of Canadian resource projects no matter the size, type or beneficiary. As a channel for funding to smaller pressure groups, it is quite conceivable that some of Ms PR’s ‘70%’ of ‘local’ funding is foreign too, through local chapters of external pressure groups. How many of those are American too? Who cares? It is still treasonous.
There is a general theme to the green ‘anti’ agendas: manipulating the CO2 scare and ‘pollution’ to achieve geopolitical goals through the manipulation of ‘useful idiots’. (They will be abandoned at some later stage when their strategic usefulness is outworn.) Welcome to Canada where clean air, trees, oil, minerals, first class technology and climate whores with their ‘Johns’ abound.

Looking at his Climate Reality Patrol game, I realized that WUWT serves that purpose admirably. On almost any topic, WUWT commenters provide links to the real facts on the subject. I’m not a computer gamer, but perhaps a version of the Climate Reality Patrol game could be built to get out the real facts using WUWT links.
Or perhaps Al Gore’s Climate Reality Patrol could be hacked to redirect the key word to real facts. That would be fun.

+++++++++++++
That’s a great idea! The skeptics can be chasing the around with the ‘player’ being some sort of robed character. The more the climate researcher lies, the slower they are able to move. When the menacing skeptic catches up with them, they are disrobed (robes lifted off) and the climate alarmist is shown to be a naked man standing huddled, knees together, covering his manhood.
Unlike in real life, that ‘exposed’ player has to leave the game after being caught.

I am sorry, but I can only take small doses of Al Gore without going insane…which may explain a few things if you think about it…
From ManBearPig:
“In the forty years that I have worked…to my work on An Inconvenient Truth, the “Live Earth” global concerts, “24 Hours of Reality” on the web, and an app for the iPhone and iPad called Our Choice.”
I am thinking I may spend some time fact checking some of his 40 years of work…I am sure there are a few nuggets buried…that might inconveniently un-bury themselves…maybe
However…my rant for now:
Al Gore…When he talks…what hat is he wearing? VERY VERY IMPORTANT
Al Gore Apple Board Member? Subject to SEC Guidelines.
Al Gore the guy from the non profit…Climate Reality Project? Does the term 501(c)3 mean anything any more?
“The Alliance for Climate Protection d/b/a The Climate Reality Project, a 501(c)(3) organization, are deductible as charitable contributions for United States Federal income tax purposes.”
Al Gore the former Vice President. “I am not lobbying Federal Employees…I am not even a registered or paid lobbyist…I am AlGore…these Senators are my Peeps…heck I was the President of the Senate remember! I can tell these guys what ever I want…I am AlGore!”
Al Gore Investment Wiz Kid…Green Investment, Carbon Credit Billionaire? Trying to be sneaky by locating his little hedge fund in the UK…away from the SEC…he thinks…
I am not a big fan of ad hominem attacks, so I will not call people names like dirtbag…
But I will say this. What Albert Gore Jr. is doing is wrong. Forget the ‘science’, don’t debate what he is saying…that is his right as an American. He should not be allowed to wear all of his hats at the same time…Do you guys UNDERSTAND…?
Connect some dots people…and learn the difference between DISINFORMATION and MISINFORMATION. I would argue that tactics used to confront these two words should be different…

Bad news for Al.
He’s entering an already crowded marketplace (more suppliers than demand, I think).
For this, wikipedia is the source to go to.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming_game
(That’s an entire category!)
Dynamic Climate Change Simulator
(I like this one; sounds like a GCM)
LogiCity
Stabilization Wedge Game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stabilization_Wedge_Game
(My, that one has its own wikipedia page. While they at the same time keep deleting the MWP. Can’t have the MWP and the wedge game on our HD at the same time; space is scarse.)
(“A final criticism is that the Wedge Game focuses on technological fixes rather than fundamentally challenging the endless growth economy that is at the heart of global climate change.” Ah yeah that’s bad. Gotta get rid of growth. It’s no fun stabilizing when that darn industry keeps growing.)
Climate Challenge
(From the BBC, for indoctrinating kids. I plaid it once but it’s boring. I tried to make all the bad decisions but in the end the game didn’t even make me explode.)
Keep Cool
(This one’s from two PIK guys. Yes really. Maybe they were bored while waiting for a GCM to run up to 2100.)
Winds of Change
(This one’s co-sponsored by Munich Re.)
Climate-Poker
(Card game from a woman from Berlin where your goal is to assemble the largest climate conference ever. Sounds like a good start – maybe like a MAD game. But then again, maybe not.)
CEO2 – Climate Business Game
(Online game from WWF and Allianz. Funny, all these German insurance companies in the Climate Change Game business.)
Fate of the World
(by Red Redemption. At least they’re more honest than the Greens in their color choice.)
Plantville
(By Siemens. This is getting embarassing. Another German concern.)
So wait. Al Gore is up against Siemens, Allianz, Munich Re, the WWF, the BBC and some smaller players. And nobody ever played one of THOSE games. Or the ones who did died of boredom and don’t live to tell.
Hello, I ran for president of the US once and now I’m reduced to THIS???

The stupidity, it burns…
This deserves a new term, GoreCereNull, describing the process where exposure to Al Gore causes deadening of thought, possibly as a defensive reaction to prevent brain damage from seriously considering what he says, especially when so much of what he spouts goes against basic human survival.
Example:
You are alone in the woods in the middle of winter. You have fallen into freezing cold water. How do you warm up?
1) Obtain wood from nearby trees, start fire, allow fire to warm you.
2) Set up solar reflector, allow natural renewable sunlight to warm you.
Results:
1) Your release of carbon dioxide has increased the rate of climate change, which will result in increased drought and tree-killing infestations, which will eventually destroy this forest. However as you lack the qualifications of a degreed biologist with special knowledge of forest conservation, you start a forest fire which destroys the forest, and while in pre-industrial times the land would return to forest within 100 years, the effects of climate change prevent this from happening. You have irrevocably destroyed the forest. -10 points for thoughtless and callous behavior.
2) You have successfully warmed up from clean renewable solar energy. +10 points for your ecologically sound judgment.
Two hours have now elapsed.
Time is now 3:17 AM.

You play enough role-playing games, you learn to play by game logic, you do what the game considers correct no matter what reality knows is correct. Just as real people don’t have health status meters and can take three shotgun blasts before needing to pick up a first aid kit, reality and the game will be recognized as separate environments. If the game offers real-world prizes, even iTunes downloads, people will just play the game by the game’s rules and feed it what the game expects, with little to no effect on what their real-world choices will be. Very big FAIL.

January 12, 2012 12:14 pm

The game represents a one two three punch against maturity, farming and children.
The wind powered tractor is a good symbol of the climate change cause. It is an investment shown idle doing no useful work needed for the farmer to make a profit. The farmer must wait for the wind and charge time and rely on a battery not up to the job. Note there is no disk or plow and probably no power take off or hydraulics in this tractor. In other words the climate change cause pretending to know farming is as honest as the wind tractor.
They could say it is only a game and the tractor is only a toy, a part of the game but the game is obviously targeting children with the intent to misinform, corrupt and strip them of the values held sacred by their parents and they call it fun. The word social is used 17 times and is obviously an important word
The game is designed for instilling the idea of organized spying and flash mobs on fellow citizens as OK with the reward of virtual pretend hero status and fake badges for following a game designed with a political money and power grabbing purpose to cripple the most advanced civilization in the known history of the world.
And worse if followed in the real world the game promotes the kind of central control over farming imposed by the late USSR and in turn control of the food supply.
The gaming punch against maturity is their endless prattle about climate change and how we are expected to believe their fraud without question or concern for the truth. And that they now intend to fill our interstitial moments in our lives with their prattle.

The EPA has a new online map of the “biggest GHG emitters”, perhaps so that Gore’s “flash mobs” will know where to congregate. See this AM’s NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/12/science/earth/epa-unveils-map-of-major-greenhouse-gas-producers.html

The article states:

The new registry does not cover direct emissions from agriculture, forestry or transportation, which are not required to report them in detail.
The data shows that power plants are responsible for 72.3 percent of reported emissions and that the three largest single sources — two generating stations in Georgia and one in Alabama — are owned by the Southern Company, based in Atlanta.

Farming & forestry account for 30.9% of emissions. The energy supply sector accounts for 25.9% (AR4). Eliminating farming, commercial & residential buildings would be more effective than eliminating industry — and think of how many surplus people that would kill. Warmists really hate me pointing this out 🙂

Farmers? Kids today think food comes from the grocery store…
That’s true. I once read the account of some inner-city kids that went on a field trip to a dairy farm and a beef feedlot in the country and were so shocked with what they saw they afterwards refused to drink milk or eat hamburgers.
But our once-proud education system has given NO insight into climate change except to give the kids completely false expectations. Those responsible should have their professional certifications revoked in the very least.

We used to be a host farm for Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF). Workers provide half a day’s labour in return for a night’s accommodation & meals. One worker sent into the garden to harvest peas returned empty-handed having been unable to find any. The worker expressed great surprise when shown that peas come from pods that grow on the plant. Another thought that carrots were a kind of fruit that grew on a bush! Both were undergoing tertiary education.
We gave up hosting when the ecozealots started telling us that what we were doing was wrong. How dare we use plastic (greenhouse film) to grow tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants & cucumbers. When I pointed out that the car they were driving had vinyl seat covers and dashboard, not tomention insulation on the electrical wiring, the response was: “But I need my car!” Like we didn’t need warm season crops.
I despair…

I think we should introduce a new game called CAGW
(Catastrophic Alarmism Gone West)
Which involves showing how wrong the alarmists have proved to be.
Watched a BBC travel show called Tropic of Capricorn where travel junkie Simon Reeve visits various place like Michael Palin did but with his own agenda of course. In Simon’s case Climate Change features heavily.
In the Australia segment he visits a cattle station at Longreach Queensland which was towards the end of a drought (I think the show was produced in early 2009).

But anybody that knows outback Australia knows that it is a “sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, of ragged mountains ranges of droughts and flooding rains”. And the climate has very little to do with CO2.
When you listen to the BBC documentary you would think it is never ever going to rain again in Queensland. But what would Simon Reeve have to say if went back to-day?
http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200902/r340987_1551721.jpg
Picture of Longreach 2010
(As at 31 October 2011, there are no local government areas or Individually Droughted Properties (IDP) drought declared under the Queensland State processes.)
From Longreach, Reeve travels to the Great Barrier Reef at Heron Island where there is more CAGW. If you want some even more preposterous “scientific conclusions” have a look at that one too. You will find if you Google:

Welcome to the old-new strategy of conquest by repetition through a thousand of little sources, many of them aimed at children and youth, the next generation, many at popular culture. Through a flood of innocuous little matter-of-fact “mentionings” in movies, dramas, art, literature, imagery, daily language, news stories, school projects, textbooks, cartoons, techno-geegaws…and of course games, the message will be repeated again and again, until it’s smiling at us from every corner of our conscious lives. No need to explain, justify or defend; quantity trumps quality. The SkS site makes it clear the skeptic will be treated as an old, set-in-his-ways fool who must be waited out . The butt of uppity jokes and ad hominem mockery. No more serious debates, no more attempts to justify the science. Skeptics will cease to exist as a meaningful factor. This is now a plain culture war which they believe they can win. And win they will, if we stay only on the high road of science, believing that truth is self-evident and that facts can conquer, and if fail to meet them in the sweaty trenches.

What was Gore doing in 1971? From biography.com:
http://www.biography.com/people/al-gore-9316028
“ He earned a degree with high honors in government in June 1969 after writing a senior thesis titled “The Impact of Television on the Conduct of the Presidency, 1947-1969.””
 and:
“Gore opposed the Vietnam War, but said that his sense of civic duty compelled him to enlist in the U.S. Army in August 1969. After basic training, Gore was assigned as a military journalist writing for The Army Flier, the base newspaper at Fort Rucker.”
And:
“With seven months left in his enlistment, Gore was shipped to Vietnam, arriving in January 1971. He served with the 20th engineer Brigade in Bien Hoa and at the Army Engineer Command in Long Binh”.
And:
“When he returned to the States in 1971, he worked as a reporter at the Tennessean. When he was later moved to the city politics beat, Gore uncovered political and bribery cases that led to convictions. While at the Tennessean, Gore, a Baptist, also studied philosophy and phenomenology at Vanderbilt University. In 1974, he enrolled in Vanderbilt’s law school.”

Did anyone else read the description of the “Climate Reality Patrol” game and think “Spambot”?
He eliminates the cost of a spider, by having players scan the web. But those players constitute a human-based web spider.
Then, he has those players spam a blog, etc, with statements that they do not formulate, but that come instead from a database engine.
He saves the cost of internet charges for himself, by distributing the cost of the spamming over all the players. If the spam should become enough to interfere with accessing the blog, then the players are actually volunteers to a DDOS.
And lastly, the players are “paid” in the form of rewards and achievements within the game…so that the players do not even have to believe in what they are “saying” to personally benefit. In other contexts, these would be called telemarketers, but Al Gore pays them in virtual benefits rather than real ones.
Al Gore has finally invented a net thingy. It’s a human-based Spambot.
I don’t think he’s thought this through…I think this could cause him serious monetary trouble were a class-action-suit minded law firm to take an interest. Also, I’m not a lawyer, but I’m pretty sure the creation and implementation of a spambot is illegal, especially if there is no opt-out; he could actually spend jailtime. If a teacher mandated the playing of this game for students, said teacher, and Al, could be contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If advertising for this game appears to target kids, or the game isn’t an 18-or-older game, Al could be more directly contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If the frequency actually causes difficulty accessing a website, it’s a DDOS. Penalties for organizing a DDOS could be serious.
This could be very, very entertaining.
Some thoughts: sites such as WUWT can preemptively protect themselves, to some extent, by a simple spamkiller that looks for the keyword “ClimateRealityPatrol”. Possibly, via a bunch of small claims courts claims (NOT a class action suit, ’cause WUWT would never see much money) Gore could be made to pay for the implementation and maintenance of said spamkiller, since he is essentially targeting certain websites. However, note that the “ClimateRealityPatrol” string is there as a “default”, not a “mandatory element”, so enterprising gamers could remove the string, defeating the spamkiller. The string could be considered an opt-out, but not if it can be removed by the players.
Secondly, although sites like WUWT would probably prefer to protect themselves, it would be fairly easy to set up an uprotected dummy Skeptic site that could very well exhibit the Spam and DDOS effects for court purposes.
Thirdly, a possible defense could be “Freedom of Speech” (although I would have trouble seeing that, sometimes courts are crazy). If it ends up being considered a form of protected speech…well…there’s nothing to say that Skeptics couldn’t play the game, and put the spam…anywhere. And everywhere. Until it becomes such a nuisance to everyone, that it can’t be ignored.
This could be very, very entertaining. 🙂

RDCII (January 12, 2012 at 7:09 pm) makes some excellent points about Al’s plans for “human bots” and DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks which really need to be looked at by all of you who have background in the technology and law on this stuff.
Please don’t ignore; WUTW may be able to scuttle his unethical/illegal scheme and publicise Al’s familiar creepiness.

Users can capture climate abuse using their mobile phones and upload photos or share news items. Those that do so with regular frequency and take on the role of ‘influencer’

So it’s really a spying app.

Is the windmill tractor a dumbed-down version of Tractor Tom? http://www.tractortom.co.uk/
Only Tractor Tom was a nice helpful tractor. Tractor Tom was very helpful and would never run out of power. He would be there to gather the harvest in before the wind and rain of the Autumn (fall). Green windmill tractor would have to sit out in the wind and rain trying to recharge. Maybe the windmill tractor would have gone green catching a bad cold and chill. Windmill tractor would be only ready to gather the harvest once the wind and rain had turned it green with mold.
Now children, after the easy Al Gore games, try some Tractor Tom to stimulate you brains.
