“They believe the insidious impact of climate change, its tipping of natural balances and disruption of feeding habits, is decimating a species that has long numbered in the millions and supported human life in Earth’s most inhuman climate.”
But, darn those Caribou, they just aren’t acting the way they are supposed to….
A vast herd of northern caribou that scientists feared had vanished from the face of the Earth has been found, safe and sound — pretty much where aboriginal elders said it would be all along.
“The Beverly herd has not disappeared,” said John Nagy, lead author of a recently published study that has biologists across the North relieved.
Those scientists were shaken by a 2009 survey on the traditional calving grounds of the Beverly herd, which ranges over a huge swath of tundra from northern Saskatchewan to the Arctic coast. A herd that once numbered 276,000 animals seemed to have completely disappeared, the most dramatic and chilling example of a general decline in barren-ground caribou.

I always used to think that they just lay on their backs in the snow on the ground and waved their legs in the air, quite helplessly until they finally froze to death. So, when they originally proposed that 276000 Caribou had suddenly died to Climate Change, why nobody went and asked the basic question that we have seen Willis ask several times here in WUWT in a more general context? i.e. WHERE ARE THE CORPSES? It is amazing that they can publish something like that and get away with it.
These high priests of the climate need to vacate their computer labs and get out amongst the flora and fauna to discover that the life forms they study are not living in blissful harmony with their environment. There are predators out there as well as bug infestations and of course, bacteria and viruses. A change of a couple degrees is nothing compared to the brutality of living “in harmony” with nature. Anything can devastate a herd of animals one year and that same herd will rebound after a few years … that’s the price of living the brutal life they live. These automatic reflexive actions of the high priests to blame everything on climate change really makes them look … well, like a bunch of ignorant and superstitious high priests.

I talked to a University of Edmonton scientist responsible for the Coke campaign to build a nothern refuge for the polar bears. I asked why he thought the polar bears who have lived through the Eemian, the Holocene so far, through the Roman Warm Period and the MWP, would die out in this warm period? He said he was not a climate scientist but his American climate scientists have told him ithe warming is happening much faster this time. And he believed them, living in Edmonton ??
The caribou probably failed to respond to an online survey. Hardly the scientists fault if the caribou are not going to cooperate. Bloody denialist caribou…

The CBC interviewed someone, I miss the opening and the man’s name. Effectively he told the interviewer they were never missing just misplaced. They spoke next to a local hunter, he knew that. “Happens all the time,” he said. No one bothered to ask the people who live there. You know those ignorant hunters who either find the Caribou or starve. Or more probably chose to ignore them, what do they know, their not university grads with all those high tech toys.
So that’s what those hooves are for!

I dunno, I’m not a scientist, just a normal guy with a simple science degree, but i do have a brain me thinks (I think therefore I am?). Wot I wud hev done is just follow them wolves. It’s them that best can track the caribou, them wolves. Or have the scientists modelled that wolves have already died of global warming? LOL.
Well, caribou are very adaptable and mobile animals. Back during the last Ice Age they were down by the Mediterranean, now they’re up in the Arctic. They are even on Spitzbergen which they must have reached by walking over the ice in winter.
During the climatic optimum 6-8,000 years they were even on Franz Joseph’s land, but there they died out when the glaciers re-expanded to cover almost the whole archipelago. There are limits to adaptability even for caribous.
Most amazing of all: there are two thriving herds on South Georgia down in the Antarctic, brought there by Norwegian whalers about 100 years ago. Those animals had to shift ther calving and rutting periods by 6 months in just a few years to survive. Very few animals can do that, so it is a measure of their resilience to environmental changes.

Associate Professor Schmittner notes that many previous studies only looked at periods spanning from 1850 to today, thus not taking into account a fully integrated palaeoclimate data on a global scaleā¦
Professor Colin Prentice from Macquarie University says he is not surprised by the results.
Professor Prentice, who was not involved in the study, says the new paper is based on a careful compilation of data and addresses an issue that is āabsolutely centralā.
āWhat it means is we can be a bit more sure about the sort of range of temperature changes that will result from the given change in the amount of fossil fuel and CO2 and other greenhouse gases,ā he said.
āThe key point is that there has been ongoing buzz about the possibility that the climate sensitivity may be way, way higher than in mainstream climate models.
āSo for very technical reasons with data just from contemporary observations and observations from the recent historical period, you just havenāt got enough information to really rule out those numbers.

A classic case of presupposition designed to disguise the fact that they didn’t get of their fat arses and go have a look. There, in the vastness of the Tundra, amongst the Pingos and swarms of blackflies, the caribou were merrily munching sedge and having calves while someone exaggerated the effects of a fraction of a degree. This is the stuff of satire.
Over and over and over again thankfully through the lenses of the world wide web, we are seeing the crass, gross ignorance of supposedly highly trained scientists increasingly on display.
Their intellectual and academic arrogance and the casual dismissal of those with on the ground knowledge but of course of inferior intellect compared to the highly trained scientists, are rarely believed or their knowledge checked and acted on.
Instead we are regaled with seriously bad science written up to give the most alarmist slant on the subject, all with barely the slightest underpinning of reality.
We saw this contrast with the bush trained Tree man during the debate on the hockey stick tree rings on WUWT a year or so ago where the tree guy just gave a simple, totally believable run down on how trees live, grow and die which made the CRU claims surrounding Mann’s tree rings look like pure garbage which they were.
I saw it when the El Nino was written up in the Scientific American in the very early 1970’s. All the anchovies had disappeared off the Peruvian coast due of course to overfishing with all sorts of scientific sounding claims of tonnages caught and how the anchovy fish stocks were decimated and would never recover.
Right at the end of the paper was a short comment from the author to the effect that the old fishermen said that it happens regularly around Christmas and they called it El Nino because of the Christ Child appearing then and yes, the anchovies would be back in big numbers next year and the anchovy fishing would be good.
Dismissed of course as that of course was just poor, uneducated Peruvian fishermen talking and they really didn’t understand about over fishing.
Nothing has changed in the arrogance of the academic class except thankfully via the net, we can now see the stupidity, futility and uselessness of so much of their claimed “research”.
With a world wide financial crash coming there will be a great weeding out of the science incompetents and much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the outer darkness as it finally comes home to many of these incompetents that they and their arrogance are expendable.

THE traditional Eskimo ways of life of the Inuits in Greenland could vanish by 2035 because of global warming, say scientists.
No references, unfortunately, and I haven’t been able to find a likely source. The 2035 number throws up lots of links to the debunked Himalayan Glaciers melting story.

Surely the caribou can’t survive a 1 degree C change in temperature – after all, it is well known that they die off and disappear every spring as it warms up. Oh, sorry, that’s snow I’m thinking of…
You can`t really blame the scientiest, those caribou refuse to cooperate. My guess is that this rude behavior from the caribou is due to global warming, which is altering their natural good nature.
They’re backing away from the consensus in small, politically/socially acceptable steps. This has happened before in science. Examples I’ve read about include the way that incorrect values assigned by consensus to certain fundamental constants were chipped away at in steps over the years to arrive at the correct value, although those making the corrections (except the last) must have realized that a larger correction was needed. But, socially/politically, that was a bridge too far.
Here’s another politically incorrect thing about caribou. You and I have around 1 Bq / kg of radioactive Pb210 / Po 210 (supported alpha decay of Po210) in our bones. This is natural radioactivity, associated with radon, although people wonder if this is harmful – after all, we are told there is no threshold for radiation carcinogenesis.
Caribou have between 500 and 3000 Bq / kg – i.e. about a thousand times more than we have. This has nothing to do with human activity, and does them no harm. (Its from the lichens that they eat in the tundra.)
So caribou are double denialists – both of AGW, and of the radiation LNT (linear no threshold) hypothesis.
Hide the caribou!
I just sent the following letter to Quirks and Quarks, the CBC radio’s “science” show. While it seems neutral on most science questions, it continually pushes the AGW barrow. I feel that it will do no harm to try to steer them back to facts. (If I heard a promo for this Saturday’s program they are going to talk about a 10Ā°F warming in the “antarctic, melting glaciers, etc. Probably taking the Antarctic Peninsula as “Antarctica”, as the CBC has done before (as with an earlier shameful program featuring Alanna Mitchell).

A similar “event” occurred with gray whales back in the 1990s. A Mexican “intellectual” (a poet actually) flew over the popular calving lagoon of San Ignacio, but couldn’t find but a few whales. He promptly issued a press release that global warming had driven the whales out of the lagoon and the species was doomed. He had seen the evidence with his own eyes!
It turns out the flyover was done in late November. The gray whale migration out of the Arctic usually doesn’t start until late October and the bulk of the population doesn’t arrive at the Baja lagoons until late December. The whale counts in February/March showed noting out of the ordinary.
Speaking of vanishing animals here is a story of why the polar bears are “Vanishing”
Seems poley bears are not dumb animals. Heck if a darn sheep can learn to avoid a catching pen after getting its first immunization shot at two months, I have no problem thinking a poley bear can recognize the sound of a helicopter. My animals can tell the difference between the diesel in the feed truck and the diesel in the truck that hauls the trailer. And both engines are Cummins in dodge pkups.

I would like to believe that the “Climate Scientists” have finally jumped the shark. But political correctness demands adherence to The Narrative. None of these “revelations” will reach the ears of true believers. And we have a whole generation of children who have grown up hearing about the reality and truth of AGW in the classroom. The debate is over, didn’t you know? Try engaging one of these children in discussion. It ends with, “You just hate polar bears, you lazy polluter”.
No real scientist believes in consensus. No real scientist cherry picks data. No real scientist attacks people who disagree. No real scientist conspires to confirm preconceived or required results. Real Scientists believe in the scientific method. They embrace peer review and welcome dissent. They engage in the process of explanation of their theory and seek opportunity to share data with peers who can then replicate results and educate the “masses” about what is going on. If anything. But none of that is happening and the scientist involved are not interested in creating that environment of learning.
AGW is worse than religious faith, as it has damaged the reputation of real scientists, minimized and marginalized the scientific method, and artificially promoted the politicization of science. People who ask honest, inquisitive questions are shouted down and berated. People who point out inconsistency, bias and even coercion are ignored or attacked. And people who don’t adhere to the narrative are… well, stupid.
And we think a second e-mail dump is going to have ANY impact on this? There is way too much money, power, ego and prestige to turn back now, much less admit that there has been any sort of scientific malfeasance.

Actually it’s the other way around. The population of Greenland is currently about 60,000. There is NO WAY more than a few thousand people could possibly support themselves by hunting in Greenland, and most people there have already largely abandoned the traditional way of life (which inter alii obliged the oldest son to fulfil the sad but unavoidable duty to kill his parents as painlessly as possible, when they could no longer keep up with nomadic life).
But if Global Warming makes the Ice Cap melt it will open up more than 1,800,000 square kilometers of new hunting grounds….
Yes, but what if sheer population pressure would drive an ever swelling number of polar bears, thriving in a slightly less chilly Arctic, ashore to hunt on the huge swath of tundra in northern Saskatchewan, causing untold suffering to the young and crippled of the recently re-discovered vast herd of northern caribou in an unprecedented blood bath? How the poor fluffy beings (of both kind) are supposed to be recompensed? Is not a joint bear-caribou arbitration tax is in order, running to no less than twice the amount of profits any evil venture on the face of Mother Earth may make?

The caribou strike again! Back in the 1970’s, when the Alaskan Pipeline was proposed and built, the environmental folks sued, saying the pipeline would block the caribou from their traditional calving grounds, causing a massive decline in populations. The pipeline was built, and the caribou simply calved on the other side of the pipeline. One environmental lawyer involved with the lawsuits told me that he felt betrayed by the caribou, as he had been certain his group could have stopped the pipeline from being completed. Way to go, caribou!
The caribou were merely hiding out on the back of the Canadian quarter. I know, because I saw them there. Poor polar bears have only white coke cans to hide on. I hope nobody is buying those white coke cans as it may be their last refuge. GK

I was kind of wondering if the caribou had moved to the north or to the south. Then I got a grip on myself and remembered, what does it really matter. Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Wet/Dry Hot/Cold.
That junk conclusion about the vanished caribou is a product of my favorite topic, the junk science called ‘Conservation Biology.’ The same ‘science’ that can conclude that sees the highest polar bear population in recorded history, and probably recent prehistory, is disappearing. As I have noted here many times, this model-based post-normal “mission oriented” [read “missionary”] so called science is WORSE than global climastrology. And, yes, I know that that is hard to believe!
Watch also for the BS campaign about the woodland caribou. Like the whole recent ‘concern’ for the boreal forest and boreal forest species, the real target of that is the cash cow of the boreal called the Alberta oil sands. They are doing all they can to extort money out of that.
One of the big spins of these caribou stories are Big Lies about wolves, their populations, and their impact on caribou. So whenever you see the name [Dr.] Paul Paquet, your BS detectors need to be on full alert.
Strangely, any “lost” caribou can probably be found in Yamal, cozying up to the very epicenter of Warming, YAD06. As I recall, the people there subsist partially by tending a total of about 500,000 free range caribou.
I think the Caribou were off hiding Trenberth’s missing heat.

I did read something similar (I think it was in the Nat. Geog. Mag.) about a year ago. Researchers went with locals using dog sleds to cover distances that included crossing ice-covered bays or estuaries. The surfaces were said to be softer and the ice thinner or unstable. Sorry that I didnāt pay enough attention to this to file it somewhere. It seemed to me at the time (and still does) that it was just another ānatural variabilityā story and about as important as Caribou moving about. I donāt recall a date for the end-of-life estimate or even if there was one.
You could call or write the Paper for a source.

Back in the 1930s a permanent herd of buffalo was found to be well established in the Carmacks area Yukon Territory, Canada. They disappeared I believe in 1950s and spe
cialists like this post’s Cariboudioxide Biogolleyists reckoned that deeper snows in the 50s resulted in the herd perishing (they didn’t teach these guys in those days either about the expectation that their should have have been a lot of bodies, and big ones at that- Willis’s major contribution to ecologly).
In 1969 I was prospecting for a mining company in the Snag River area near the Kluane Range. A. Competitor’s helicopter dropped into our camp and an excited Dutch geologist yelled a herd of. Muskoxen were heading towards our camp. I jumped in the copter and what did I see? A “lost” herd of very healthy buffalol that had moved into the shadow zone of the Kluane where little snow fell and they could get forage all year round. I’ll bet the aboriginals knew where they had gione too.
In some ways it will be sad when the global warming muth is finally killed. I really enjoy all the jokes that bloggers bring out to burst the bubble. this thread has been particularly good.
Just a peripheral question: I vaguely remember in the 1970’s(?) when the James Bay project was finished, that vast bodies of water were created across the traditional caribou migration routes.
In the first migration after the project finished, thousands of caribou drowned while trying to swim across these new bodies of water.
What ever happened in subsequent years? Do the caribou still migrate? Do they still drown?

I thought their story on polar bears originated because they tranquilized a couple and the bears were too heavy to pull into their boat, so they let them drown. Then counted them as dying from climate change.
Complete arrant nonsense about caribou. Have done helicopter mustering. The pilots think they have 100% sight of the ground. They have about 80%. I tested it by standing in the shade of a tree . They did not see me. Next test standing in the shade, I waved my arms fully over my head. Again, the pilot did not see me.
In the Northern Territory, helicopters are used to muster wild cattle in Arnhem Land. I spoke to a man who lived and mustered there. He said the cattle learned to dive under the bullrushes and paragrass and lie still until the chopper had flown away. Later a documentary filmed the same thing.
Graze animals are prey and just because warmists and assorted greens heads are full of rubbish, does not change the prey animal response one iota.

This report joins the Irahwadi [sp?] dolphins, Antarctic krill, gray whales, giant squid, and other cases of animals moving around or alarmists simply not looking in likely places regardless.
Leads me to wonder if the hare-lynx population roller coaster in northern Canada is just the animals moving around to find different food. (Researchers have found strong correlation of apparent population fluctuation to the Arctic Oscillation, but no causal mechanism. Iāve seen the population boom-bust phenomenon in a farming area of NE BC, but had no ability to look elsewhere. A popular theory back then was that willow trees developed resistance by becoming bitter tasting, but recent research indicates that is not a likely cause.)
(I hear similar claims about bluefin tuna and Atlantic cod, but donāt have good leads to sources.)

the earth is warming,,,it’s called the end of the ice age, yes we are still in the ice age and it’s getting warmer because it is ending, the poles we be ice free again, just like through out earth’s history of normal cycles…..
The majority of the herd of sheeple, will never notice until it’s too late. I can’t help them and neither can anybody else. Global warming is a scam to pass carbon taxes.
The problbem here is pretty simple.. there are 2 parts:
#1 scientists deciding things without evidence
#2 journalists writing things without evidence.
