Gore-a-thon: Finis

Thanks to everyone who participated. We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming. But, you can still review all the great cartoons from Josh.

I’m happy to tell you that all of the Gore-a-thon posts and cartoons are now available in the Climate Fail Files page here. Enjoy! They are also available via the category selector for “Gore-a-thon” on the right sidebar

My sincere thanks to Josh. His efforts have given WUWT the best traffic day since Climategate.

I welcome your impressions of the event in comments.

I’ve had enough Gore for 24 hours, I’m going to take a breather. Be sure to see Willis’ most recent post for some interesting findings.

I convinced that if all the presenters built roller coasters instead of global warming presentations to scare the crap out of people, they’d get more return and new customers. Think of them as Climate Carnies.

I watched a few segments, for short stints at least. I saw a lot of claims about all of the extreme weather in the past year being due to climate change, these were repeated over and over. At least two presenters gave the same presentation of “Somewhere out there is a world where all sorts of bad stuff isn’t happening, but not here”. Then there was a video from Bill Nye Climate Guy (formerly known as The Science Guy) Guy) in one of the last hours where he just plain, summarized all of the extremist claims. This can be seen in Hour 23, 6:30 minutes in in this link: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/17293770

Many thanks to both Anthony and Josh for their humorous and informative effort.
One big difference I see between the “skeptics” and the AGW supporters is what has been shown here – the skeptical position just wants to get it right wherever that may lead. Is the temperature warming or cooling? The Ice melting somewhere or becoming more extensive and thicker? Oceans rising or falling? Oceans getting warmer or cooler? Atmospheric CO2 levels rising or falling? Anthropogenic CO2 emissions making a difference to the levels in the atmosphere?
Whatever. Let the truth and the data and the facts take us where they will.
On the other hand, the AGW supporters only want what they say is happening – anthropogenic CO2 emissions are causing warming which will cause catastrophic events – to be what is believed, regardless of what the truth and the data and the facts may show.
While WUWT shines, Al Gore’s “CRP” remains dull.

Congratulatons Anthony! The Gore-a-thon was a tremendous success. This is a classic!
An earlier comment about a book. That should seriously be a consideration. Anthony has presented a lot of interesting information in the 24 hous of gore.
A quick look at the graph (viewer ratings) in the previous post may suggest that a number of skeptical viewers were absent from WUWT while watching gore’s show. Now that the show is over I project that the ratings on WUWT will spike while gore’s site plummets as the real discussions begin here. You’re not supposed to talk during the show, don’t ya know.
And we all need to remember that Gore made it all possible.

Anthony and Josh, you deserve a huge round of applause. This effort must be some sort of blog-making history. When you think of the “machine” that went into organising the Borathon, and yet it still couldn’t get up to WUWT traffic figures, you should be justifiably proud of yourselves. If the 105 days of viewing figures are right, it would infer that at any given time only 105 were watching. That’s not much considering that probably half of those were skeptics. How about adopting Theo as the WUWT mascot?

well the reality in australia is we’re getting capntax no matter which party is in power. here’s the Opposition on ABC last nite:
15 Sept: ABC Lateline: Turnbull on media, tax and Kevin Rudd
TONY JONES: OK. I mean, you’ve already committed yourself once to a BIPARTISAN plan for a CPRS and you argue it has a lot in common with the Government’s plan …
MALCOLM TURNBULL: I don’t argue it; it obviously does. I mean, I’m not going to – if someone asks me a question, I’m not – look, I’m not – I’ve been through the pain barrier, Tony. I don’t – I’m not going to stand up there and give slippery, disingenuous answers.
If somebody asks me a question, straight question and says, “Does this scheme have lot in common with Rudd’s CPRS and the ETS that John Howard was proposing to introduce?” The truthful answer is yes. They’ve all got a lot in common. They’ve all got differences and some of those differences are more significant than others, but, you know, ultimately at the core there is a ****cap-and-trade scheme and there’s a commonality.
They’ve been DESIGNED BY THE SAME PEOPLE. The same team that worked for us worked for Rudd and have worked for Gillard, so – but that’s beside the point. I’m not going to sit here and mislead you and try to suggest that there’s some – you know, it’s a completely different creature.
Yes, it’s got a lot of differences and, you know, we could talk about them for hours. But, fundamentally, they’re very similar….
http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2011/s3318972.htm
the anti carbon tax movement in australia has been misdirected in a sense, which is a pity.

No claims by Al of the North Polar Ice cap gone by 2013? Anyone?

September 15, 2011 7:44 pm

Al Gore is currently claiming 8.6 million ‘views’ – whatever that is – I reckon that includes a hell of a lot of scripts and web crawlers..
Anyway check out this http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/17294584#utm_campaign=synclickback&source=http://climaterealityproject.org/video/hour-24-new-york/?template=basic&medium=17294584
Notice the view count – 1,707 Live Views – also look at the panel on the RHS and do some mental maths – you have 9 hours totally say 3000 views to be generous.
I make that a whooping 8000 views TOPS for the 24 hours from the archive.
Then if one looks at http://www.ustream.tv/user/climatereality/info-stats
we have 484,371 unique views – so I make a grand total of 492,371 unique views of the videos, assuming no double counting going on.
Al where is the other 8.1 Million ‘views’ ???

As touched upon before, an excellent refutation of CAGW contained within this series of posts. There’s so much more within WUWT that goes beyond that though – not just a refutation of the tenets of Al’s Sermons, but details of the basis for a TRUE understanding of what drives our climates. Don’t ever expect that from those who obsess over plant food.

September 15, 2011 9:12 pm

Hmm, a lot of hate towards Al Gore, but it seems from what I saw of the Climate Reality presentations Al seemed quite charitable towards deniers. He makes the case that National Academies of Science from around the world support the premise that human CO2 emissions are causing the Earth to warm. It sounds like he doesn’t see deniers as enemies, just as future partners to help solve a problem.
I never followed politics all that well when I was younger, so I just don’t get where the Al Gore hating is coming from here.

September 15, 2011 10:02 pm

@otter17: you must not be paying attention. It’s not that anyone “hates” Al Gore. The problem is, he lacks intellectual honesty AND has entered realms of science he knows nothing about. Worse, Al Gore has refused to debate AGW skeptics, so it’s irrelevant to say that he’s being “charitable” toward them. The Royal Society in London, the world’s oldest scientific society , has a Latin motto that translates to “No one gets the last word”. Al Gore thinks HE is the last word. Science doesn’t work that way. Pointing to the National Academy of Sciences for making his case is nothing more than the logical fallacy called “appeal to authority”. Go google “Ivar Giaever” to see why the claim of scientific consensus is a steaming load. Wise up.

September 15, 2011 10:04 pm

Just want to jump in a try to correct an error without having to go to court about it.
I do not hate Al Gore. Never have, never will.
But I do strongly dislike (“hate” if you must) every thing he has doe from expropriating the work we did to create the Internet to causing me a lot of money with this “global warming” nonsense.
If I was going to hate somebody, it would be the people that have profited from all of his nonsense.

D Marshall
September 15, 2011 10:29 pm

Ivar Giaever, while being an accomplished scientist, is not a climate expert and his reasons for quitting the APS seem almost petulant, given that he didn’t give any real rebuttal of AGW except that it was his opinion that the global temperature is stable.
He failed to point out, or may be unaware that three-quarters of the increase he noted has happened in the last 50 years and that the increase in that time period is quite significant on a global scale.

Ivar Giaver is an a physicist. That means they have first hand knowledge of how the physical world really works. That’s a pretty big qualification, I must say. In fact, James Hansen, the father of AGW, himself is a physicist, and not a climatologist. That apparently doesn’t discredit him from running the NASA GISS unit.
As for your second comment, please explain how the roughly 0.8 degrees the temperature is generally believed to have risen in the past century is ” significant on a global scale.”

I’ve just been through all of the MSM papers here in the UK and the only reference to Gore’s efforts is this one:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2011/sep/15/al-gore-climate-change-reality
This article questions Gore’s suitability as the self-appointed “Messiah” of CAGW. The comments from readers are a real hoot, too!

September 16, 2011 2:28 am

Strangely “The Goreacle” website now clains that …….. “By the time our chairman, former Vice President Al Gore finished his presentation, the 24 hour long event had 8.6 million views.” Yet the Ustream Counter now seems to have been “updated” and showing …..
Stats
Total views (all shows): 532,843
Total viewer hours (all shows): 16165 days, 21 hours, 28 minutes
Total unique views: 484,371
Seems like all these extra folks were “driven” there by
links from blogs like this one & Climate Depot & etc.
A strange anomaly though is seen at Alexa stats,
where a single query is responsible for much of these visitors.
Query Percent of Search Traffic
1 we 25.75%
2 the climate reality project 20.79%
3 reality 11.26%
4 climate reality project 4.92%
5 alliance for climate protection 3.67%
6 climate reality projec 3.65%
7 the climate project 1.65%
Who is “we” ? Who searches for “we” anyway ?
When I searched with Google, Bing, Yahoo, and indeed
*ANY* other search engine for “we”, there is NO mention
of AL Gore or his climate reality project, even on page 5
of the results. What is the explanation for this ?

Dear Kim [ redacted ],
You made yesterday a success.
In the months that went into planning 24 Hours of Reality, I saw firsthand the passion and energy of our Climate Presenters, staff and partners around the globe who are calling attention to the climate crisis and working to solve it.
Yesterday, I was honored to see your passion and your energy. I can’t thank you enough for making 24 Hours of Reality a global success.
By the time our chairman, former Vice President Al Gore finished his presentation, the 24 hour long event had 8.6 million views.
I am incredibly proud that so many people around the world participated, but it’s also important to remember the individual actions it represents. There are countless stories of impressive grassroots mobilization. A company in Tel Aviv hosted a watch party at their headquarters. A group of graduate students in Athens, Georgia rented out a popular local movie theater. People across the world joined hands to say: Climate change is real, it’s happening now and the time to act is now.
But this is just the beginning. There are important actions you can take today:
Request a presentation. There are more than 3,000 trained Climate Presenters around the globe. Organize an event and invite a Presenter to come to your community.
Go local: Team up with our partners around the world and help solve the climate crisis. Visit our website to find a partner organization near you.
Moving Planet: On September 24, hit the streets with 350.org for a global day of action. Find an activity near you.
Check our comprehensive video library to watch highlights from 24 Hours of Reality.
It is up to you to continue to stand up for reality and share the truth about the climate crisis. We will succeed because we must. Thank you,

This ustream stats page shows only 484,371 unique views of the Climate Reality Project videos.

I believe prior to the 24 hour show, this stat was at ~ 24,000, based on views of other prior videos.
So the video provider is showing only 460k unique viewers, and 500k total views.
This is a huge discrepancy with the claimed 8M, or even “Millions” as stated on the current website.

=======
I attended the 2pm PT session and the last session on the 16th and was gobstruck at how low the number of views were. At 3pm PT the site stated just less than 7M views, by the end at 5pm PT it was about 8.6M views. I found it very curious that 1.6M views occurred in the last 2 hours.
Anthony later reported the Ustream numbers which conflict with views reported on the Climate Reality Project page but alluded to the idea that the Climate Reality Project page was actually reporting views of Ustream as well as hits on Twitter and probably Facebook which are second hand information.
The part I find to be telling, 484,371 unique views related to 532,843 total views of the Ustream sessions. This means only 484,371 people actually took the time to view a session and, of the group that did, only 48,472 bothered to view more than once. Subtract the 24k hits before the webcast started and we’ve got a program that turned the entire audience Off.
Its a stretch of the imagination to believe the 484,371 keep the session rolling for 24 hours.
24 hours of Climate Reality with Al Gore was DOA.

Maybe this is worth revisiting? Ustream says a view is “Unique Viewers refers to the actual number of viewers you had from unique locations. Total Viewers refers to the total number of views your stream received. For example, if a viewer started watching your stream, left, and came back ten times it would count as one unique view but ten total views.”

This shows that they had just one ’24 hour show’ on for that full period.
And they claim “MILLIONS WATCHED”
http://climaterealityproject.org/
‘Watched’ surely doesn’t include facebook and twitter – and in fact there’s no way to get page views from those services in any case.
So I certainly think there’s no obvious explanation for the ustream stats vs. what is claimed – am I missing something?

May our deepest thanks reach the champion of all sceptics, the only one who made possible to convince the whole world of the impossibility of global warming/climate change: Professor Albert Gore, self proclaimed inventor of the internet and nobel laureate. May he rest in the peace of oblivion, with all his loving comrades, and species in danger of total disappearence, his most dear polar bears and liberal companions.
