With the upcoming Gore-a-thon set for September 14th, Gore needs an attention boost more than ever. And that’s not all, the number of people that beleive the sun has a role is growing. 60% of likely U.S. Voters think it’s at least somewhat likely that the level of activity on the sun, including solar flares and sunspots, has an impact on the long-term heating and cooling of the earth’s atmosphere. Just 22% feel that it’s unlikely solar activity influences the atmosphere’s long-term temperature.
From Rasmussen reports:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that just 24% of voters consider Gore an expert on global warming. Fifty-nine percent (59%) do not think Gore is an expert on the subject, an increase in skepticism of 12 points since March 2007. Another 18% are not sure. While a plurality of Democrats (43%) considers Gore an expert on global warming, most Republicans (80%) and voters not affiliated with either major political party (65%) disagree.
Gore may disagree, but most voters believe solar activity has an impact on global cooling and warming. A narrow plurality gives human activity the edge over sun activity, though, when it comes to which one has a bigger impact on the problem.
Gore is viewed at least somewhat favorably by 40% of voters, with 14% holding a Very Favorable opinion of him. Fifty-three percent (53%) regard him at least somewhat unfavorably, including 38% with a Very Unfavorable view.
That’s some bad chakra. Even serial wailer Bill McKibben’s message on “weather is climate, it really is, especially when there’s a hurricane” is falling out of favor too:
With hurricane season in full swing, 41% of American Adults believe global warming is creating climate changes that lead to more extreme weather events. But that’s down 14 points from June 2008 when 55% felt that way. Forty-three percent (43%) disagree and say global warming is not producing more extreme weather.

Al’s problem is that he has not for a moment behaved in his personal life as if he took all the hysterical BS he’s been relentlessly spreading the least bit seriously. 99% of the public haven’t got a clue about the science of the climate, but they do love their gossip. When you’re ranting hysterically about 20 foot rises in sea level, while simultaneously purchasing a couple multi-million dollar sea side properties even the detached public will notice eventually. When you are telling people they need to ditch their SUVs and confine their transport to micro electric suicide boxes, while flying about on private jets and being driven around by convoys of even bigger SUVs, which sit idling outside while you make your little speeches and collect your honoraria, people will notice. Al has always talked the talk, but not once has really walked the walk. It took much longer than I thought, but the world is finally on to him.
If you start from a position of lying to support your political objective, its inconvenient that the great unwashed masses (us) wont forget what you did and why you did it. No amount of hand waving and personal attacks on the integrity of others will wipe out that memory. Our dear (read economically destructively expensive) Prime minister Julia would well consider that point,

The warmists forgot one thing when they tried to persuade the world that AGW is happening and that is common sense. They were unable to provide answers to the following questions:
1) Why should I be paying a fortune for my gas,electricity,petrol and flights and have my countryside disfigured by windmills when industrial giants like China and India do nothing and have booming economies?
2) What % of CO2 in the atmosphere is regarded as “safe”?
3) 3% of CO2 in the atmosphere is man made, how do we deal with the other 97%?
4) Why have we had three cold winters in a row (with a fourth predicted) when we were told that AGW would mean that snow in the UK would be a thing of the past?
5) Likewise with the cool and wet summers?
6) Why are we building more wind turbines when we need power stations running in the background to provide power when the wind doesn’t blow?
7) Why are people who question AGW derided, insulted and described as “mentally ill” by AGW supporters?
8) If the science is “settled” why do we need more money pumped into research?
9) Is AGW as likely to end the world as HIV, bird flu, swine flu, tobacco, alcohol, mad cow disease, the millennium bug, 2012 and whatever date this year that some idiot told us would end mankind?
10) Climategate, hockey sticks, lawyers paid vast sums to prevent data paid for by the public, being seen by the public?
11) The global economic meltdown will be nothing in comparison to what will happen to the worldwide economy if we reduce CO2 emissions to the levels proposed. Is it worth it?
Al’s problem is nobody doesn’t know a nutter when they see one. If there’s anyone in Amurika today that needs to keep their damn closet door closed, it is the Gorical.

If you have a high flame under a pot of water, it will heat the water up even if you turn the flame down a bit. The Sun was more than averagely active all the way from around the mid 1930’s all the way to 2003. That’s why the ocean continued to accumulate heat content, despite the decline in the peak amplitudes of the solar cycles after 1958.

And consider this: If two men are in a race, and one starts running faster than the other, he will overtake the other man and get away. Then, if the faster man starts to slow down a little he will STILL keep getting further ahead as long as he is still running faster. So, yes the sun has been “slowing down” a little (as it were), but it’s still been running fast enough to get away.

As the ‘common’ man is forced to dig ever deeper into their pocket to pay for green taxes and subsidies, as fuel bill escalate so that they cannot afford to heat themselves properly and are forced to cut back enduring a cold house during cold winters, and as the economic depression bites harder and harder and it can be seen that many cuts could be avoided by simply putting the green agenda on hold, there will at grass root level be more skeptism of the green agenda and moving away by the populus.
It is easy to look cool and be green until you have to pay for it and rather than appearing cool be forced to endure the cold..
The tide of public perception is turning and this will continue to gain momentum. The politicians are lagging behind public perception but they too will eventually see the light and note that a tipping point has been reached after which the green folly will be abandoned as they scrabble to be re-elected

The most impressive part of this Attitude Adjustment is that it happened without any help at all from mass media. Personally I’ve always found “Horsesh*t” to be the more effective rebuttal.
I would not make too much out of public opinion polls. Public opinion is notoriously fickle, and even when the pollsters do a careful job designing and administering the poll questions, the results (IMHO) are “soft” and can quickly change with circumstances.
I suspect most of the decline in the public’s acceptance of AGW theory and agenda is the increasing disinclination to embark in large, costly and economically damaging schemes to slow or halt it. People in the US and other industrial societies are more and more focused on their personal economic circumstances and less and less confident they can afford the cost and disruption the remedies pushed by Al Gore et. al. will entail.
When the economy turns around, I suspect AGW concerns will become trendier. Of course, in order for the economy to turn around, we have to stop flogging it with stupid policies like Cap & Trade, carbon taxes, regulatory strangulation of energy development, etc. Once we escape the immediate situation caused in part by our own stupidity, people will probably embrace another round of the same stupidity, as long as it makes them feel good.
As Churchill summarized his final volume of the history of WWII:

1) AGW data analysis summary:
A warming globe requires the oceans to heat up.
They didn’t, so it isn’t.
2) Anyone else notice the similarities (in tone and circumstance) between Rahm’s “Dead!” rant, complete with steakknives, about Clinton’s in-house opponents, and Gore’s “Bullshit” brain-dump?
These polls are normally complete C.R.a.P. because they do not take quantum theory into account. It is impossible to measure an outcome without influencing that outcome. By asking the questions they are impingeing on the consciousness of people who may have no opinion on Global Warming and are consequently inducing such an opinion by their question. We have managed to isolate and remove many of the leading questions in polls, also many of the Hobson’s choice questions but the problem of creating an opinion by the very act of asking is still insoluble.
P.S. You have to marvel at the ignorance of an international “leader” who thinks the Aral Sea dried up from Global Warming. Sheeesh! I thought Kiribati was supposed to have sunk beneath the waves by now? How come it is still there for him to visit?

In my opinion, that to help undeveloped countries we should make sure they are energy sufficient
to drive important communications and electricity. Maybe this could be a petrol driven generator for a little hospital in Kenya, that has only one solar panel that can only provide enough energy to drive one small beer refrigerator where they keep all their vaccinations, serums, etc. It can’t drive at night lights or the refrigerator. I followed the link and read down to the last paragraph which I re-read twice in disbelief.
It says:

In other words the global cooling of the last few years is to be ignored.
Anthony I think this is quite significant if you agree on my interpretation of it.
When the economy turns around, I suspect AGW concerns will become trendier.
I don’t think so.
It’s going to take a long while for the economy to turn around. If the meltdown in the USA is followed by a Eurozone meltdown (now well under way) and finally by a Chinese meltdown, full recovery could easily take another 5 years, even a decade.
And by the time all of that is cleared up, CAGW or CACC will have gone the way of phrenology and eugenics.

After hearing of Ban Ki-moon’s rants about the Aral Sea and Lake Chad, I’m surprised he didn’t throw in Lake Urmia/Oroumieh/Orumiyeh (spellings vary).
But it’s in Iran, and it wouldn’t be politic for the Secretary General of the UN to appear disrespectful of the Islamic Republic’s military theocracy.
I imagine that former Vice President Gore would find himself faced with a very serious moral dilemma if he were to ever wake up one morning and discover he had suffered an overnight epiphany such that he no longer believed the world was faced with a Global Warming problem and the danger of a runaway CO2 catastrophe.

Quite true. I suspect that there may be those who have contributed to this unfair media portrayal who might come to regret that activity if they find they have only opened the door for someone *they* view as even less desirable than Governor Palin.
Probably the same 25% that think the govt. was behind 9/11….

The interesting angle with Palin is that the exact same things were said about Reagan. Indeed, while there was less of it said due to the Internet still being in its infancy, the rhetoric was just as heated about how bad he was. And of course for any honest person over the age of 40, we know that he was the best president in modern times, bar none.
I really wish Palin would get in. I like Bachmann (an excellent VP) and Perry (not as enthused), but Palin is my first choice.

O/T Hi Spector and PhilJourdon, I respect both your views as I am not American of course. But what about Ron Paul? The thing about Sarah, although I think she is absolutely stunning to look at, is she is not well versed with international politics or has not a world view commiserate with a political aide, let alone anyone who should be near the top end of politics. She was proven to be a loose cannon. She tends, in my opinion, to open her mouth before engaging her brain. However, humans walked with dinosaurs? We didn’t and she is a creationist not evolutionist.

The nice thing about these forums is we are exposed to views from outside our little cocoons. I have learned a lot about Australia Politicis reading Joanne Nova’s blog, so I am happy to respond to Bush Bunny here.
Ron Paul is of course a libertarian. As such, he has some great economic ideas. He is socially liberal (the hallmark of a libertarian is less government period – which conforms to the “live and let live” of some of the social issues of this time). But he is also an isolationist. WHile not totally wrong in that regard (we do need to stop being the world’s policemen), his views do run to the pure side of it and wants us to withdraw to our borders (and let the world care for itself). I see that as a problem. We have been shown twice in the past 70 years that isolationism does not work (12/7/41 and 9/11/01). While we may not need to be galivanting around the Middle east interfering in Egypt, Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Iraq, it is evident that we need to be on guard against rogue nations like Iran. We can go into the exact meaning at another venue.
That is why I do not support him. I understand his positions, and agree with most of them. But our president is unlike a prime minister in a key area. While he can preen for the cameras on domestic issues, his real legacy is in foreign policy (congress does the heavy lifting on Domestic issues, although not recently).
