The reporter who recorded them, Brent Gardner-Smith, had a press pass to the event and was recording what he understood to be remarks that were also being streamed on the Internet and were therefore public.

There is zero evidence that Gore is particularily smart and even less for any high IQ. His academic achievements are ordinary, even below average, despite his advantages of private schooling and tutors during his childhood. While we were subjected to political ads showing him “on the farm”, his formative years were spent living in a Washington, D.C. hotel suite.
His vaunted book is just “cut and paste” and very similiar to his recent outburst.
Thanks to the voters of his home state, Fla., and, primarily, Ohio-had he won there the Florida results would not have mattered-the USA was spared from him as POTUS.
Given that the family wealth and influence that resulted in his initial political sucess was based on oil and tobacco holdings, and his more recent additions to his personal wealth are a result of smoke and mirrors and government policy subsidies,its hard to have any positive feelings or opinons of Mr. Gore.

Uber-high IQ test results do not automatically translate into school or life success. Some (as in less than most) of these students are very messy, have horrible pensmanship, no or very wooden social skills, and get average to below average grades. They can even become extensively involved in white collar crime as they get older, and may start up several ultimately failed businesses. Marriages are often strained to the breaking point. Gore reminds me of these kinds of students.

I listened to the whole 90 minutes, and I thought it was a very interesting discussion of democracy and the media they were having. And my opinion of Al Gore went up several notches.
I thought that the point where he ‘loses it’ was one which came in his response to a question about tobacco and smoking, and how if the US Surgeon General had said that smoking causes lung cancer in the internet age, a week later there would be somebody else saying that smoking helped people to breathe better (or something like that). Gore sees the global warming debate in the same light, but with Big Oil replacing Big Tobacco as the denier of the climate science authorities.
Back in 1960, the US Surgeon General was accepted unquestioningly as an authority, and everybody believed him. When the climate scientists tried to come on as authorities in the same way 50 years later, they weren’t readily believed.
The real question maybe is not so much “Are people wrong today to doubt or disagree with authoritative climate scientists?” but instead, “Should people have believed the Surgeon General so readily 50 years ago?”

In the ’60s, the Surgeon General had epidemiological studies to bolster his case. And in the beginning, the climate scientists WERE believed. Frank, do you believe the US Surgeon General is still believable today? If so then it isn’t the Internet that is responsible for disbelief in climate science. If not, then what has caused such important people to lose credibility?

The real questions are:
1. Why are people not affected by tobacco rhetoric on the Internet today , yet so easily convinced by the AGW denialist nonsense on the Internet?
2. If the US surgeon general was accepted so unquestioningly 50 years ago, why do so many people still smoke today?
3. What does smoking have to do with climate change?
4. Wasn’t it the US surgeon general who told Californians to be prepared for harmful radiation coming from Japan to the point that there was a run on iodine tablets?

No. But that’s because it’s only become possible to easily get hold of the epidemiological studies in the last 10 years or so – i.e. in the internet era – and realise how weak the science actually was. It’s far, far weaker than any of the AGW climate science.

I turn the question around, and ask why some people will readily question climate science, but will uncritically accept the far worse science underpinning the Surgeon General’s report of 50 years ago.

You need to have a psychiatrist analyze his remarks; they are basically incoherent and illogical. In the past psychologists had analyzed him as a borderline personality and fundamentally unstable. Its amazing and troubling that he could even have gotten as close as he did to the Presidency.
