Climate Craziness of the Week: Grist perpetuates the tornado to climate change linkage myth

Grist-logo.pngAnd of course they throw in all ‘extreme weather’ for good measure. But as they like to say, let’s ‘explode the myth’.

From the Grist website, an intro to what they say is a ‘must see’ video, following McKibbens ‘must read’ irrational rant.

Bill McKibben published a must-read op-ed in The Washington Post last month about the connection between climate change and recent extreme weather events. Now Stephen Thomson has combined McKibben’s words with striking footage of the events he writes about. The result is a chilling must-see video:

Chilling? Oh gosh yes, finely edited to be ‘chilling’, like a budget horror flick. But watch it anyway and “feel” the connection. It’s a Debbie Stabenow moment.

Then, calm yourself, and if you are so inclined (notice I didn’t say ‘must read’) read my essay on the issue, along with NOAA’s take on it.

The folly of linking tornado outbreaks to “climate change”

NOAA CSI: no attribution of climate change to tornado outbreak

And for some levity, have a look at this hilarious cartoon about Grist on the Fenbeagle blog

Meanwhile, back in the real world, here it is only one week prior to the Solstice, and we here in Norcal are just now getting our first instance of true dry season weather. Normally we’d have gotten our first taste of this in late April or early May:
MUCH WARMER TEMPERATURES ARE STARTING TO SHOW UP ALOFT WITH READINGS CURRENTLY ABOVE 70 DEGREES FOR LOCATIONS ABOVE ABOUT 2000 FEET.

June 14, 2011 8:45 am

People tried to do that in Massachusetts too after the Springfield/Brimfield twisters of June 1st. Thankfully that wasn’t a complete repeat of 1953, but without modern technology and warning it may have…

This is about a smaller tornado spawn by the same complex that dropped the Worcester tornado that killed 94 people. If this tornado hit today it would have been much worse, as this tornado passed right through the neighborhood I grew up in. The similarities to last week are striking, except for the location. People see that there was an F4 tornado in 1953 yet they still want to say we’ve never seen anything like it…perhaps they just don’t listen

In an introduction for another author’s 2004 book, anti-skeptic book writer Ross Gelbspan said, “If the press really wanted to bring home the reality of climate change to viewers and readers, it would begin by making the connection between the warming atmosphere and the marked increase in extreme weather events” http://books.google.com/books?id=_qaESkZ31DAC&pg=PA5
So, ol’ Bill McKibben is just regurgitating old talking points, it’s kind of a trendy thing for AGW believers to do lately……

It takes a special kind of stubbornness to take a phenomenon associated with unseasonal cold and assign causation to average warmth.

This video can also be found at ‘Make Wealth History’, being defended by the site owner. I was banned from the site for pointing out that this video is fearmongering alarmists propaganda. I provided statements by NOAA and even Gavin Schmidt saying that climate change had nothing to do with recent extreme weather, but the denier banned me for telling the truth.
These alarmists have no principles and therefore no shame

Maybe if this bill passes people will be able to see the immense waste of taxpayer funds on “climate change” grants.

I find it disgusting to use a huge tragedy like Joplin, MO for political points…..But since when did the AGW side and their charlatans have any shame? Swiss cheese don’t have as many holes as that video and op-ad.

Brilliant..er..projection, eh, and a Gold Medal Flour award for “warming is chilling” – no exploding heads but apparently we’re all still just grist for the Head Start “or else!” Media Mill.

Grist has IP banned me from viewing the site after I posted this NOAA chart of tornado activity:
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/research/2008/ann/ann-F3-F5tornadoes08.png
I believe a few sites including Grist and The Guardian rely on user complaints which small armies of busy body AGW enthusiasts have figured out how to game, since it is exactly these specific censorious sites that have greatly above average numbers of damage control efforts in comments versus other news sites, and I can no longer get any post through the Guardian’s “pre-moderation” condition they slapped onto my latest account after I was ganged up on by bile spewing defenders if AGW when I posted links to the “1010 climate” and “angry Greenpeace kid” YouTube videos.
Since there is a strong cultist belief that skeptics truly are conspiring to mysteriously profit from destroying the world, motivation levels towards silencing skepticism reach fanatical levels in which silencing of dissent by any means becomes a high moral ideal which fulfills many core human emotions of those who adopt the CAGW word view mostly due to a deep trust in authority.
Also, a competent threat to their world view presents not just an ego and self-image threat but as individuals it creates a very primal terror, that of losing solidarity within the warm embrace of a supportive and heroic group of fellow activists who exert massive levels of peer pressure on one another to the extent that bursts of comments appear that seem to better represent within-group displays of activist credibility rather than actual attempts to change the minds of outsiders.

I would have to agree. Craziness (posturing as intellect & erudition) is the norm at Grist, but outside of the environmentalist ghetto what is really crazy is to pay them the slightest attention. Best to just correct the most egregious misapprehensions and downright falsifications, but otherwise ignore them.

Global Cooling
The number of tornadoes and hurricanes was heading down until 2011, when the temperature anomaly fell suddenly. Tornadoes and hurricanes need a temperature difference so energy can move from hot to cold.
I think the recent uptick in tornadoes and hurricanes is caused by the downward shift in temperature, causing the high latitudes to get colder, causing an increased temperature gradient from tropics to poles.
Could we be so accustomed to the brainwashing of the CAGW alarmists that we’re not recognising the advent of Global Cooling?

To attribute dust bowl conditions as the same as the dust bowl of the 30’s is foolish. The 30’s problem was in the Dakotas and due to increased agriculture ploughing to remove the grass which held the topsoil together. Sun and wind did the rest.
Texas, on the other hand, is in the desert region of the planet. Increased abstraction of groundwater, to supply a rising population, is the problem here.

June 15, 2011 10:00 am

It would be nice if someone could take this video and augment it a little to include more worrisome disasters that seem to be trending upward, like the earthquakes in Indonesia, Haiti, New Zealand, Chile, and Japan, and the tsunamis that resulted. And don’t forget the volcanic eruptions in Iceland, Chile, and Eritrea. Oh, and you might as well throw in the disappearance of sunspots, which might actually be related to something.

Unprecedented flooding in Australia???
As far as I’m aware there have been many previous floods of greater magnitude than this years, goiong back several centuries. How is that unprecedented?

Oh, and let’s add in the acceleration of the movement of the Magnetic North Pole. Unprecedented!

Here in Eastern Australia we’re experiencing a cold snap which is the coldest for some 60 odd years and we’re talking 6-8C below average. of course the climate rationalist blogs are saying WTF, where’s the warming? and the climate catastrophists from tribe anthrakaphobe are saying-” it doesn’t prove anything- its just weather”. So, question – why is weather, “just weather” and extreme weather- climate change? What a difference the intensity makes.
