Adventures in journalism: from llama fish to carbon neutral bras

Louise Gray, who wrote this amazing piece of journalism in the Telegraph the other day…

Fish carried up a mountain on backs of llamas to escape global warming

…has boobed given us yet another story worthy of discussion here.

The Carbon Trust Footprinting Certification Company has calculated the carbon used in making the bra and will monitor the project to ensure emissions are cut.

The wonderbra, it isn’t, but somehow, from a guy’s perspective, seeing the models below, I don’t think any guy is going to give a hoot about the carbon neutrality of undies.

Source: Telegraph Fashion Section

Gotta wonder though if this:

…an ‘eco factory’ in Sri Lanka where energy has been reduced a third through measures like making sure all lighting is from the sun or low energy light bulbs.

Isn’t just code for “sweatshop with no lights”.  At the M&S website for the bra, there’s no mention or photos of the factory that I could find, though there are mentions of how buying one of these will supposedly benefit the purple-faced langur and the Ceylon  rose butterfly.

I guess they haven’t gotten the Wal-Mart memo yet:

GORE STORE NO MORE | Daily Telegraph Tim Blair Blog

After suffering seven straight quarters of losses, today the merchandise giant Wal-Mart will announce that it is “going back to basics,” ending its era of high-end organic foods, going “green,” and the remainder of its appeal to the upscale market. Next month the company will launch an “It’s Back” campaign to woo the millions of customers who have fled the store.

Maybe, this is just nothing more than an extension of this old campaign:

Ms. Gray is merely staying abreast of the situation. Digressing, I wonder what stimulating boudoir conversations will result from the inherent interest caused by a Carbon-Neutral Brassiere? After a night wining and dining and, ahem, jacking up the passion, a mad dash from the Prius to the stairs, to suddenly be awestruck by the world-saving glow of the finery exposed. Lycra?? Noooooooo! Itchy Hemp fibre, grown….wait for it….
Oh never mind. I hear llamas.

Next will be the bikini with solar cells incorporated into the fabric. The wearer will be able to plug into the grid at the beach resort and earn credits to offset the emissions resulting from their travel to the tropics. Kids hats with propellors on top will contain micro-generators that can be similarly connected. Exercise bicycles can be connected. Treadmills can be substituted form by giant hamster wheels. The possibilities are endless. We have not yet begun to conserve!

That sounds about right. There is no limit to the spin this industry produces. I would not be surprised to hear that workers have reduced their transport carbon foot print by sleeping under their work benches between shifts.

Louise Gray is the reason I rarely buy the print edition of the Telegraph any more. And I was an addict to it for twenty years. So that’s £300 per annum revenue they miss out on.,
I suspect that she only applied for the job there once she had failed to be hired at 10:10 as creative director for being too extreme and uncritical in her credulity about anything labelled ‘green’.
The examples of her cut and pasted press releases Anthony cites are representative of a long long list of her ‘work’.
For those who do not know, the Telegraph is supposedly the foremost upmarket Conservative-leaning newspaper in UK and the market-leader in ‘serious’ journalism.
Ms Gray is a cuckoo in their nest.

Lower lighting levels in work areas will likely lead to more worker injuries. Workspace lighting isn’t something that should be toyed with for political points. I wonder what kind of workplace safety laws are in force in Sri Lanka?

A nice bit of spin, to appeal to those who’ve deserted M&S in droves over the past 10 years or so.
The bit worth looking at, is the planting of trees, this may be under the guise of “off-setting carbon”, but laudable.
Still the same low-wage sweatshop, that many get very excited about, but that’s the lot of the worker in these regions. Work long for a little, or don’t work and starve.

Articles such as Llama/fish/climate change or Climate change/Bolivia/Gaia just reinforce the absurdity of the global warming mythos. Guess Wal-Mart wised up. The greenies wanted them ‘green’ but they sure as hell weren’t going to shop there — not where all the peasants gather. So Wal-Mart is back to basics — back to the cheapest goods possible for customers who may be working two jobs just to stay afloat and aren’t interested in saving the planet, just their own selves, trying to keep from going under.

Why not combine that with the “Wine Rack” and use it as a form of pumped storage to cover periods of darkness?

Nice idea, Dave. If we load the Wine Rack with the product of methode champenoise, we would also have carbon capture and storage! Much of the carbon dioxide would be absorbed upon consumption, and eventually exhaled, but the product of human respiration doesn’t count as anthropogenic emissions, so a tradeable carbon credit would be created. One’s (D) cup would runneth over!

How about solar cells in beach towels and beach umbrellas instead? I got it – a beach umbrella could power a small refrigerator to keep food and drinks cool.

I love Bolivia giving nature legal status. I can just see an accident killing 3 when a car hits a tree and then the tree suing the grieving families for damages. Where does the money go, if the tree wins? Do they set up a trust and hire a trustee and arborist to care for the tree the rest of its natural life. How much should damages be if a tree can live 100s of years? Too many questions. Who is going to watch the trustee to make sure that he or she is not taking advantage of the tree’s passive approach to life?
If I forget to water my lawn or give it lawn treatments, is the lawn or a lawn activist going to sue me for neglect?
This would certainly be a way to create jobs – mainly for lawyers.

The Greenies just want Wal-Mart dead becuase it is a shining example of capitalism at it’s best (economies of scale) and worst (predatory pricing). But bottom line is Wal-Mart is the best thing to ever happen to the working poor and lower middle class, especially in rural areas. Not just for providing goods, but for providing decent jobs.
Honest to god I really don’t know what the Watermelons enivision as their utopian future. Really, they do come off as envisioning a 1984 or 2112 (for you Rush fans) where they, the enlightened elite, enjoy the fruits of human history and knowledge while the untermenschen toil in some 15th Century nightmare of windmills and some wretch inducing vegan-organic starvation diet. At least in 1984 they had electricity most of the time.

If those are the examples, I have to say the choice of boobs and bras demonstrates a lack of understanding about boobs and bras. Any bra is wasted on Model A, carbon neutral or not. Somebody order her a hamburger, fry and shake. On the second model, a strapless carbon neutral bra would have to be super glued to stay on and “up”. Idiots.

OT check that one too:
http://www.oneperth.com.au/2011/04/13/climate-change-may-cause-quakes/
“… Giampiero Iaffaldano from the Australian National University is part of a team that has found a link between movement of the Indian plate over the past 10 million years and a big climate change event over the same period: intensification of the Indian monsoon.
Dr Iaffaldano said the monsoon, which increased rainfall in northeast India by four metres annually, had sped up motion in the Indian plate by almost one centimetre a year.
“The significance of this finding lies in recognising for the first time that long-term climate changes have the potential to act as a force and influence the motion of tectonic plates,” Dr Iaffaldano said.
He said the finding could help unlock the causes of plate-motion events such as large earthquakes.
“When forces moving plates along their boundaries reach certain thresholds, earthquakes occur and energy is released,” Dr Iaffaldano said….”

I’d rather support carbon recycling. As in the innovative development of spray-on clothing, which uses short cotton fibers currently but could possibly use other types. Not only could they perhaps utilize too-short fibers that would be considered waste for normal thread and textile manufacture, but possibly this could be a great way to recycle dryer lint.
