The U.N., failing to convince the world, turns to Hollywood on global warming

Ban Ki-moon, South Korean politician
Ban Ki Moon

February 22, 2011: “Global warming: The United Nations courts Tinseltown“, Los Angeles Times, California, U.S.A.

“Now the beleaguered multi-national agency, fresh from a disappointing round of climate negotiations in Cancun, wants something more concrete: actual story lines in movies, television and social media drawing attention to the dangers of global warming.

The day-long gathering will feature panels titled … “Making Global Warming a HOT Issue” …

“The science is clear,” he [Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon] said in an interview. “Climate change will continue unless drastic measures are taken to stop it …. I am sure Hollywood can make good stories from this,” he said, adding that the outreach effort “may be a small start. We have to educate people who may not have the expertise and the information.”

Editor’s note: Ironically, even while Mr. Ban (who still fails to address the concerns of climate realists – see here) pushes Hollywood to promote climate alarmist “education”, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration just published a useful educational piece “Forensic Meteorology Solves the Mystery of Record Snows” in which they conclude:

“They found no evidence — no human “fingerprints” — to implicate our involvement in the snowstorms. If global warming was the culprit, the team would have expected to find a gradual increase in heavy snowstorms in the mid-Atlantic region as temperatures rose during the past century. But historical analysis revealed no such increase in snowfall. Nor did the CSI team find any indication of an upward trend in winter precipitation along the eastern seaboard.”

Read whole education piece from NOAA here:

NOAA’s CSI explains record snows: global warming not involved

…but get ready for more excited alarmism from Hollywood.”

“We have to educate people who may not have the expertise and the information.” says Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
This is presumably because people who do have the expertise and the information already recognise the BS for what it is. Thus only people who do not have the expertise and the information would fall for it and it is to them the UN now turn.

With the suspect stations and data they have a hard time even showing the temperature has gone up. Well, they seem to think they have good evidence of this, even if I don’t.
Even if it has gone up some, isn’t all the hype about what is supposed to happen after mid-century? Isn’t now supposed to be too soon?
Except for a few of its sub-parts, the UN should be de-funded and disbanded. It is a sign of the disconnection of the UN from the real world that its leader thinks Hollywood honchos have to be encouraged to do things that ooze from their DNA.

Apparently the Secretary General does not know that the climate always changes. Stopping that from happening would be as difficult as stopping the earth from turning.

Methinks Ban Ki Moon has left his run a bit late. Congress defunding (yeah I know it’s got the Senate and Obama to go) the IPCC and NASA’s climate agency (they should include RealClimate as well) is the writing on the wall for the great lie. Besides James Cameron has already done Avatar and it appears most who see it don’t really connect it with climate. It was after all just a movie. I don’t think another “Inconvenient Truth” will cut it either. Too many people now either know or suspect the first one was predominately bulls..t.
Then again people lining up in the snow to watch a film on AGW has a certain perverse logic.

The joke continues. They have already had disaster movies and Avatar if you want to spend some time watching blue people. James Cameron , the maker of Avatar, is already a proven hypocrite green. Appealing to Hollywood dilettantes for support is the last refuge of a lost cause. The Goracle just pulled the same stunt in Aspen in an obviously choreographed effort. Although Hollywood will probably go for it, standing in line for Hollywood’s latest offering with chattering teeth will probably not make for a receptive audience.
Hollywood did a fine job on the “evil oil companies and electric power generators”, but Mother Nature has a voice of her own that does not require access to “the media”.

Sure, I can see Hollywood getting involved–I mean, everybody takes them SO seriously, you can anticipate all that influence in the decline of movies and television. There’s like a tiger eye to eye with him…Cr*p!..Rain gets all hard an’ tense an’ freezin’up inta his “death stare”…starin the tiger down… an’ then like the tiger snarls an’ gets the hell outta there.. ‘cuz it’s all like “nuh-uh..not messin’ with this bad dude”….An’ Rain gives like the super cool sexy smirk that the chicks get all hot for… (an’ the dudes too!) …Then like BAM! ..15 minute montage of Rain gettin’ locked an’ loaded… cockin’ knives outta his socks, flickin’ knives outta knives..bustin clips inta super cool ninja sniper blade guns…Tearin stuff open with his teeth… a bandana somewheres… Then Agent Syngman is off inta the misty forest… Maybe a wolf howls…CUT TO: Seoul sista in the labor camp bustin’ stones, with like a pick axe…fer some reason… lookin’ fine, an’ all slutty… toned an’ buffed in flimsy tattered rags… She’s showin’ serious clevage while the NK guards are all sneerin’ an’ droolin’ all ready ta rape her… but she’s all like fiesty in yer face American Margaret Cho girl ya know…. all like “Don’t you touch me, scum man!”… An’ they’re all like evil an’ toothless an’ like hehehehehe…

I still see you like that, oldie pervert that I yam…☺

I get the feeling the Climate Change needs to be Terminated! I believe there is an ex-Govenor looking for some Hollywood work… could be a match made in UN IPCC dreams.
What exactly is meant by “stopping climate change” BTW? Are we going to create a stationary climate? Perhaps we should stop weather events too…. after all, some folks would have us believe they are linked to climate change, espcially the man-made variety. Perhaps a UN ban on temperature changes… day and night could pose a setback in this area, but if we find a way to stop the rotation of the earth we might fix that one too!
Some many ideas… so little funding…

A very good idea from the UN. Picture all the “drastic measures” which must be taken on the big screen, using the best Hollywood stars and directors available. Show the world what must be done to “stop global warming.” How about Cate Blanchet nobly putting humanity on carbon ration cards, to music by Jean-Yves Thibaudet? Actually I think he is right, Hollywood could make a really good film about CAGW. How a shadowy group, funding less than professional scientists, used a normal upswing in the world’s temperature to make themselves immensely rich and then tried to move toward global governance. Only they found that they were just too late as the climate started to rapidly cool. Initially their ‘funded scientists’ were persuaded to claim that the CO2 warmth was making the winters cold and the dry weather was leading to floods. But the people are no longer fooled; and the group panic and make last minute attempts to rescue their global takeover plans with more carbon regulations and taxes. However, the irate and starving people start to turn on the scientists and those in power who had over taxed them with ‘carbon taxes’, used food for fuel and forced them to use unreliable power generation.
Yes there are the germs of a good plot in there; I am sure Hollywood could go for that.

If we speed up the rotation of the earth, the peak daytime temperatures will read lower, showing “cooling” on all the charts….
I propose that everyday, all jets at all airports, point the nose of the plane to the EAST, rev the engines to full thrust, and lock the brakes for one hour. After that brief hour, then proceed with takeoff. This will push the earth east, spinning it faster.
If this works well, it will “cool” the earth by shortening the day by reducing sunlight hours. However, 1 hour of jet blast blowing on those airport thermometers might negate any recorded effect. You’ll need an algorithm fudge model for that one. This plan could go straight to “the moon”. I think the UN would really go for it… really.

Do any of you wonder if there is a “fund” somewhere that is in place for actors and “personalities” to be paid to act as if they support the AGW story?
These guys are actors after all and they act for money. A good brand image can carry the “message” to many people who wouldn’t ordinarily be aware of it. Hell I always thought this about Tom Cruise and that intriguing cult he purports to be a believer in.
All the hugely useless Ban is doing is to formalize the situation .

“The Day After Tomorrow” was as scary as it get and yet the public took global warming for what it is Hollywood fiction. ;O)

February 23, 2011 1:37 am

I can’t think that the disaster genre has anywhere else to go. I mean after “The Day after Tomorrow” came disaster movies like “2012” which, amongst other things, dumped California into the ocean.
We’ve had “Armageddon” and “Deep Impact” (the latter wasn’t a bad film, worth seeing) so where is the angle for a new film? Blow the Earth to smithereens?
Hollywood is very poor at preaching and is basically a fashion business, which means at the moment its monsters, vampires and zombies. When that fashion gets pound into the ground it will look elsewhere.
Greenhouse effect global warming was done in the early 1970s in “Soylent Green” (which is one of my favourite movies), so unless there’s an angle to make lots of money doing something that hasn’t been done before, AGW won’t been featuring very much.

Hollywood already tried and failed several times. I’d like them to keep trying. That will actually help people see the lie. As with the public reaction against the bloated union strikers in WI, the message people will get is the opposite of the one that was intended.

Mr Moon knows as much about climate change as does my window cleaner i.e., No more, no less!

Mr. Fosser,
I haven’t met your window cleaner (or Mr. Moon, for that matter) but I do have a high level of confidence that your window cleaner (merely by virtue of being closer to the elements and to reality – not to mention experiencing the vagaries of natural variability) probably knows far more about climate change than Moon.
Shame on you, sir, for tarnishing the reputation of your window cleaner with such an odious comparison!
But, that aside … I wonder what Moon has done about getting the UN’s own “environmental house” in order. The UN’s internal “Joint Inspection Unit” (JIU)’s report (circa May 2010) indicated that:

To win its own Good Housekeeping seal of environmental approval, the U.N. also needs, the [JIU] inspectors said, to “ensure greater accountability of United Nations system entities to Member States, the public and beyond.”
The JIU’s tough report is by no means the inspectors’ only critique of the U.N.’s environmental competence. Only a year ago another JIU inspector issued an even more damning report that said the U.N.’s system of environmental management for the world at large was in the same chaotic shape as the JIU now diagnoses for its internal management.
Among other things, that report noted that the U.N.’s emphasis on “sustainable development” — merging anti-poverty programs with environmental protection — was starving actual environmental agencies of support, causing U.N. environmental mandates to proliferate without coordination, and creating a jungle of contending U.N. bureaucracies that made it impossible to even know how much the U.N. was spending to manage its environmental actions. (The “rough estimate”: $1.65 billion.)
[…]
With the U.N.’s external efforts at world “environmental governance” a seeming jumble, and its internal environmental management an apparent mess, the JIU’s inspectors have made a striking case over the past year that one of the major environmental problems the world faces may be — the U.N. itself.

It’s fascinating watching the unravelling of the entire CAGW mess; each day, a new twist in the plot. Two new twists today, an angry and wildly intemperate Gavin being roasted for his dishonesty by Dr Curry on her blog and the seriously creepy Ban Ki Moon going to Hollywood with his ridiculous plea. I would love to see a movie of the new and popular Brit play, ‘The Heretic’, which in itself is a new twist in the unfolding/unravelling drama.
I can hardly wait for the next plot thread to begin unravelling in public – the MSM have no idea just how much real-life dram they are missing.

This could turn out to be fun. I appreciate a good weather related fantasy disaster movie like Twister or Day After.
We could have a tornado chaser-like adventure series where some carbonistas get word of winter storm warnings and immediately high five and shout “Climate Conference!”. The would then quickly dash to the storm chasing van to road trip in search of the global warming protest, Al Gore appearance, or climate conference that could break out.
We could have the giant worms from “Tremors” repeatedly pop up out of the earth and munch the CRU members just as they find the un-homogenized data.
We could even have a comedy show where carbonistas have 2 minutes to convince three ‘Deadliest Catch’ guys/contestants that the Arctic is catastrophically melting. The first DC guy to break a straight face is eliminated from the round.
This could be fun.

Advertisements almost always have a second message. Climate change and green technology are appearing in advertisements as a message in the background. The movies are famous for one liners that promote a message not related to the plot. Often a character is injected into the movie, with humor, that has the sole purpose of promoting or demeaning a person, idea or group of people. The movie plot is not destroyed as the scene moves on.
Whether in an advertisement or movie it amounts to cheap shots put on a paying and often offended public with no avenue to counter. The cheap shot has wide distribution and is displayed as many times as the advertisement or movie are shown to an audience. Browbeating also comes to mind for this tactic.

Fortunately, Moon is a complete idiot, and doesn’t realise that audiences associate Hollywood movies with fiction. It makes no difference to the audience whether it is a film about melting ice caps innundating the world, or attacks by Martian’s with a fatal aversion to yodelling. It’s all fiction. And the more they see Hollywood films with climate change themes, the more they will associate it with fiction.
Perhaps Moon expects the films to close with a banner stating ‘Scientists say this WILL happen unless we mend our ways.’ Howls of laughter.

Amazing. They still think that “what we have here is a failure to communicate” climate change. After decades, not only have they failed, miserably but public opinion is actually increasingly going against them! They still seem to think that if only they try harder, and/or can come up with the “right” formula, the mercury-filled twisty “green” light bulb will go on, and presto, they Believe. But, I guess it’s all they know. It’s either that, or simply let the “Green” dream die of people living in cold, dark huts scrabbling for an existence, with huge, ugly mostly-useless bird-blenders everywhere and solar panels providing a few hours of heat/hot water, but mostly just draining their already-battered wallets. There’s your hollywood film, Moonie.

February 23, 2011 8:43 am

See here’s the problem I have with the whole AGW thing …
Currently human society is probably at it’s worst point since the second world war. An ongoing war in Afghanistan. Virtual civil war in Pakistan. Another one likely to break out in Libya, and maybe in some other Arab states too. The distinct possibility of a ‘real’ (dead measured in the hundreds of thousands) war on the Korean peninsula.
Hezbollah have seized effective control of Lebanon and Gaza counters to fester. Iran is closer to a nuke every day and as soon as the US pulls out of Iraq the Iranian-backed Shia majority takes over.
China’s little economic miracle appears to the be result of the near total suspension of human rights and any sort of regulation. The main point of which appears to be building the military capability to invade Taiwan.
Africa is almost a complete mess, though at least Somalia seems to have a steady source of foreign cash.
Meanwhile the primary concern of the honourable secretary of the UN is an extra few inches in the sea level that even if it *were* going to happen wouldn’t actually impact anyone for another 50+ years.
Oh, and save the whales!

Anthony,
If you’re still reading these comments, this disagreement as to what was implied and what wasn’t is a small point in the scheme of things. I’m sure, since you’ve given every indication of being a fair-minded fellow, that you agree one could at least reasonably argue a potential lawsuit is implied here absent certain corrective measures from the other side…In general terms, “At the moment” clearly communicates that whatever follows those three little words is subject to change. I don’t see how that can be honestly debated…
But maybe the larger, more important point goes to the inherent biases we bring to the table as human beings. Well meaning people very often simply see things differently. Imagine how that becomes magnified when folks have their careers and reputations on the line. As bad as I’ve come to see that much of the AGW science is, I still believe that for the most part we’re dealing with well-meaning people, or at the least people who have convinced themselves they mean well.
This isn’t always that easy. One need only take a gander at G.S.’s defensive and angry performance on J. C.’s current thread on hiding the decline to see how that’s so. Still, it makes life easer for me to believe this. The anger I already feel about some of the antics on the alarmists’ side simply isn’t healthy.

Michael Crichton’s novel ‘State of Fear’ would make a great movie! But so far, not surprisingly, the Hollywood gang has ignored that one. Other than all the inconvenient themes and information incorporated into it, maybe that is also because the Hollywood airhead eco-celebrity in that story was eaten by cannibals in the end and they don’t want to give the little people any ideas.

Yup! “Terminator 4: The Heat” starring an ex-Gov from somewhere on the Left Coast. The Machines, seeing as they cannot directly kill the Humans, John Conner being so tough and all, decide to destroy the Earth Climate and cook all living things. They create mega-CO2 producing machines (giant SUV’s and air conditioners and massive incandescent light bulbs), but the John Conner of the future sends back to the new present another modified Terminator (who looks just like a certain ex-VP) to join one of the other Terminators he already sent back (the ex-gov one).
