Announcements

I have a few very important (and personal) announcements to share with the WUWT community because they will impact content and moderation over the next few weeks. Please take a moment to read this.

1. There is a pressing and very serious medical challenge in my family that will require surgery and rehabilitation time. I can’t and won’t go into details. This will require me to take periods of time away from WUWT over several weeks if not months. I don’t know the full time impact yet. This coming Friday and perhaps Saturday I’ll be offline.

2. That said, I welcome the help of any who wish to help with moderation or who wish to submit stories and essays. We could use the help of a moderator from midnight to 4AM PST. I know we have a few regulars that post during that time, and if you’d like to help, leave a comment please. WUWT has always had guest posts, and they will continue to be welcome. Leave a comment if you have an idea.

3. In case you missed it yesterday, the new ENSO/SST page is up and running. Be sure to bookmark it. This graphic on the sidebar is a direct link:

click for WUWT ENSO/SST page

…plus it is also available in the header menu under Reference Pages. Other pages of reference graphics pages will be coming soon, more details here.

4. Steve Goddard told me several months ago that he would like to start his own blog, covering a wider range of scientific, social, economic and political topics than I wish to cover here at WUWT. You can see his blog at http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com

Thanks to Steve for all his contributions to WUWT over the last two years.

I’ll be continuing the Sea Ice News feature every Sunday.

5. For those of you wondering about the upcoming surfacestations project paper, let me say that it is now mostly out of my hands and will not be impacted by item 1. I have a team of co-authors with far greater skills than I working on it. I’m pleased with the current draft having survived a critical review designed to strengthen it. When I have more, I’ll pass it along and of course at the appropriate time the surfacestations main page will get an update.

Thank you all for your consideration.  – Anthony

Aye, I feel it my friend. Crushed by the weight of success.
Saddens me to hear of surgery in any family. Best of luck to the receiver of surgery. That is an unpleasant business even when minor, and I would give the best wishes to any receiver of surgery. Metaphorically speaking, I would pray for the devil. And so, I wish the best for the surgery. So there is that.
Second, I did notice that Mr. Goddard was baiting for comments on a broader array of topics. I will attend his new blog and, if it is not a terrible representation of conservative value, I will remain as a commentator. Lucky Steven!!! 😉
Honestly, though, I have remained here and at RC and such, steadily through the past 3ish years, so I would like to thank you all for the work you have put in. I really and truly have enjoyed the discussions I have had, won, and lost. The moderators, commentators, and posters have been fabulous at stirring discussions. I have immensely enjoyed these discussions whether I have participated or not.
And good night.
😀

OT, on Ten News tonight in Australia, the last day of winter today, is recognised as being colder by an average of 2c over last winter with many record lows and record snows. Yeah, I can vouch for that.

Hope all works out fine Mr Watts.
Can I humbly suggest that to keep the momentum going all your regular contributors are encouraged to submit articles on a timetable to keep the site refreshing and that new authors can be sought as and when the site management is back again?

My best wishes to you and your family, and especially to the person who faces this challenge. We will all be hoping for a happy outcome.
In WUWT you have created something extraordinary, in large part due to the contribution and commitment of the many other able people who have chosen to become part of your community. Their presence and the enormous goodwill you’ve generated through your hard work will become clear now, as others step up to the plate while you cannot.
Good luck.

Anthony,
Sorry to hear of family medical issues. I sincerely hope that all goes well. Prayers will be extended.
I am usually up throughout the night. A small portion, we are talking generally just a few minutes, of that time is spent moderating / administering the Sean Hannity Forums. I have my own staff of moderators for the British forum I run. Thus I am available for assistance if you so desire. You have my email address.

Anthony,
I wish your family the best.
Unfortunately, I cannot help as a moderator, but I’ll forward this request to two more people I know. They might help, as the time period you mentioned is morning here in Portugal (and in Europe).
It would be interesting to know which criteria must a moderator meet, to find someone fit for the job.
Regarding stories and essays, it would also be interesting to know how can this be done more formally. Is “Tips & Notes to WUWT” the best way, or is there another way? I’ll be happy to submit some, as I’ve done in the past.

Take care of family business, Mr. Watts. I had recently had to let a vascular cutter with a rib spreader and delusions of godhood come at my sternum with a bonesaw, and I know how disquieting major knifework can be for a family.
It’s taken some months for the effects on the household of my own hospitalization to settle out. Even the damned cat is still behaving more neurotically than usual.
You should not hesitate to make contact with those medical professionals who have relied upon your Web site for information on the climate and other scientific matters. The ability to get insight into complex matters of importance to you and your family from people who have the time and the disposition to assist you – as opposed to attending surgeons, most of whom have (let’s face it) the charm of a computerized machine tool – should not be left unexploited.
Ask, damnit. The worst any of your M.D. readers can say is “no.”

I don’t remember how I discovered WattsUpWithThat, but I sure remember when. You were busily painting Stevenson Screens. And even now I can’t remember whether Stevenson has a ‘v’ or a ‘ph’. Nor can I quite remember whether I was more delighted that you were doing it or shocked that this was not already known and old information.
Then, almost instantly it seemed, came Surface Stations. The whole project left me stunned when first I read of it: mainly its sheer breathtaking originality. The use of the internet, the digital cameras, the GPS, and the rallying of volunteers all over the U.S. It was an amazing concept, and I was, oh yes!, duly amazed. And also appalled by what you were discovering.
Since then, from strength to strength. Most particularly I remember your warnings in the first hours of Climategate: paraphrased, “Be careful. It might be phony. Go slow”. Wise words.
Anthony, the contribution of you and your crew has been literally beyond measure. Of course we’ll be impatient to have you back, but we also know that that’s just silly and selfish, albeit sincere. What we truly owe you, and this the very least of what we owe you, and what I’m sure you have from all, is not only our patience but more: our very best wishes and most profound hopes for a good outcome of this problem.
We’ll see you when we see you, and that will be just fine. Very fine.
[REPLY – Well said. Our patience and our impatience will be an equal tribute to Anthony. ~ Evan]

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to you and your family!
I. Can’t. Wait. for the surface stations report! Even before you stopped updating the SS pages (Waaa! – but for good reasons) the data/results you-all had collected were damning.
What I hope is that – among other results – the US spends the relatively small amount of money it would take to revamp and modernize the whole system! We need it! As has been learned recently – nothing beats good data!
I live on 3.7 rural acres and would LOVE to have a surface station. I even have a proper location for it here.

When, many moons ago, i tripped on WUWT, i became the happiest man on earth. I had been highly skeptical of what it turned out to be THE BIG LIE of AGW. The science I had learned at university did not permit me to accept AGW sitting down, while the 0.035% CO2 component in the atmosphere I always considered as insignificant, even if the ‘consensus’ said so. When I discovered WUWT, it was, for me, a gold mine of scientific truth. It discussed the issue scientifically and with diligence and some humour too, instead of with arrogance and hype.
Thank you Anthony and all scientists contributing here.
Anthony, you are always in our thoughts and we pray for you and your family.

~ ~ ~ ~
I found I could not spare the time to keep folks informed directly via e-mail or phone and so use a password protected site with no comments. Apparently there is a pre-packaged or commercial site hosting such a server but I did not go that route. By writing something almost daily, I have also created documentation of what happened when, where, and so on. Much of this would now be a jumble of memories (if not lost). Now I can search the file for my own need or refer a late-comer (say an old high school friend or long-lost cousin) to the postings. About 6 months ago I posted a summery report and can point anyone to that for a quick catch-up. Our problems started in June, 2009 but didn’t escalate to ‘serious’ until Friday after Thanksgiving. It took me until Dec. 4 to get the postings started because by then I realized I could not carry on communications with the growing number of interested family and friends, and because I did not know how to set up a blog. (Our local computer shop owner did this for me in just a few minutes while I was on the phone with him.)
Good wishes to all, John

Dear Anthony,
As others, I wish you and your family the best. Your blog has contributed immeasurably to my life.
On a practical side, medical situations can be taxing on a family’s financial resources. May I suggest a Tip Jar campaign perhaps run by CTM? Even if your medical insurance is solid, it might help with ancillary expenses like travel. lodging, hiring extra household or nursing help during convalescence, etc. A little extra cash could make this time easier, even if it’s just used for a massage or treating yourself to a meal delivery service.
My best wishes,

It’s still an uphill job spreading the word here in the UK (given the `balanced’ reporting on the BBC and in papers such as the Independent and Guardian) but I’m grateful to you for providing such a useful and refreshing counterbalance. –
Amen to that. Like DR, I am in the UK and very grateful for the scientific illumination and dedication that you bring to CAGW and all of its works. I have a tiny role in watching the UK media, reporting in these pages on its shameful one-sided approach to global warming, and bearding the reporters and editors in their den. No point in doing one without doing the other.

Hi Anthony,
Maybe you need more time for yourself and your family, but your blog has initialized a movement. Your blog acts as a catalyst. And it is a breakthrough to be brave to ask inconvenient questions about the climate and politics. Your professional experience has shown us that many weather stations are still performing incorrect measurements for air temperatures and many stations have been disappeared for 20 year. You have indicated many problems which are completely ignored by mass media.
Don’t give up and keep going!

Dear Mr Watts
Dear Mr Watts and family
I found this site through Christopher Booker’s column in the Sunday Telegraph: thank you for that, Mr Booker! Like other lurkers I have visited your site on a daily basis and will ever be grateful for the science (most of which is way over my head) and the comments which usually follow; I love the considered discourse this site provides and hope it will continue at the same high standard.
My thoughts and and prayers will be with you and your family.

Anthony,
Draw strength from the fact that there are thousands of people, from all over the globe, who are hoping and praying that your present tribulations are solved satisfactorily.
WUWT and the way it is run is an inspiration to many, and all of those readers, commentators and contributors of yours are on your side.
My prayers, along with so many others, are with you and your family.
Come back when things are much, much better for you.

Re your family medical problems: Our family have been there, done that – in my husband’s family, and with me as I faced operations for cancer when my children were in their teens and another some years later. About fifteen years later, I’m still here – with those cancers gone – and I love reading your blogs and learning from them.
May your family feel the Lord’s closeness as you go through this coming battle.
God bless.

Anthony, I am keeping you and your family in my thoughts. You’ve reached so many people, educated them and opened their eyes, and created an atmosphere that is more conducive to solid, reasonable commentary than any blog on the webs. The tools that you have created to help people in tracking the current situations, as well as your surface station project, have repercussions beyond what you can be aware of.
I hope that everyone will also consider hitting the tip jar, since whatever situation you may find yourself in may be made a little easier with a small gesture of our appreciation. It certainly can’t hurt, and there isn’t a lot else that we can do.
Please keep us updated.

I also hope that there are enough people who can keep this important site going.
I wish I could help. Sometimes I do urgent work until 5 am Mountain time — but that means I must keep working. Posting a line or two here is one thing, moderating the site is quite another. If only I had all the time in the world on my hands, like all those manns and connoleys…

Thank you for helping educate me about our planet and beyond as I sought some enlightenment about the sudden AGW religion that emerged a few years back. Your surface station project was the first step for me, having just through common sense started to scratch my head about what I was hearing from every quarter and instinctively shouting “NO” in my mind! The wide-ranging articles, with links to sound SCIENTIFIC research, along with the comments on the blog, I consider to be of tremendous value to me and to the world.
I wish you and your family well. Thank you. EH

Best wishes, Anthony, to you and your family and I hope the surgery is sucessful.
As so many people have said before, your site has been a beacon of light to many of us who were sceptical but felt powerless to respond to the onslaught from the “concensus”. I feel I have been given the courage to stand up and question many things as a result of becoming an avid reader of your site. I am a local councillor and the rubbish we are fed in the name of climate change is incredible. I can and do challenge officers wherever possible and I thank you for empowering me to do so (as they say in local government speak).
And isn’t it funny how as soon as you do stand up and speak there are suddenly so many other voices raised in agreement?
And it’s all because of you [well, almost all – I do read Climate Audit and Bishop Hill and others but you are my first port of call]!
Roll on a “good” winter again this year. We have had the most amazing crop of apples this year and I understand it was because of the cold temperatures, so I’d better get back to the apple jelly making.
Good luck!
