Gore concedes, National Wildlife Federation calls skeptics "bastards"

Gore concedes on climate this year

By Steve Milloy GreenHellBlog, August 10, 2010

Speaking about the likelihood of climate bill being passed by Congress in 2010, Al Gore told a conference call of supporters tonight that, “this battle has not been successful and is pretty much over for this year.” Gore bitterly denounced the Senate and federal government stating several times, “The U.S. Senate has failed us” and “The federal government has failed us.” Gore even seemed to blame President Obama by emphasizing that “the government as a whole has failed us… although the House did its job. [emphasis added]”

Gore urged his listeners to take the “realistic view that they had failed badly.” Gore said that “Comprehensive legislation is not likely to be debated” and that a “lame duck debate” is a “very slim possibility indeed.” (N.B. We thought, because Gore told us, that “the debate” was over.)

Gore blamed the skeptics for “attacking science and scientists.” “They [the skeptics] did damage and cast doubt,” Gore said.

In a warm-up discussion before Gore addressed the call, National Wildlife Federation chief Larry Schweiger referred to the skeptics as “enemies” and that he hoped the alarmists would “outlive the bastards.”

Let us hope he keeps his record intact and keeps on conceding through all the upcoming years.

I agree – keep an eye on the EPA for an attempt to set up some sort of “carbon” control system – or even a cap and trade system without Congress.
If such a thing happens – you can be sure that Congress as an effective institution within the Executive-Legislative-Judiciary group will have been successfully marginalised by the Executive branch.
Hopefully it wont come to pass.

Apart from the money, I think another factor is that Progressives just can’t believe that their policies can be fairly questioned. What they want to do is so obviously correct, appropriate and generally good for all of us, that they can’t fathom that maybe a credible argument even exists. Sounds like religion to me…not that there is anything wrong with it.

I’d rather take the opposite view, i.e., that Gore acts just the opposite of God. Satan is the controlling one; the one who doesn’t want honest, open discussion. Satan is the one who piles woe and misery on the human race, whereas God tries His best to bless mankind. Gore’s actions would be completely opposite if he were God-like. Completely opposite.

It is tempting to say something over the top… but for Gore and his kind I feel pity. Some of them actually believe this stuff. It’s possible Gore even believes it, although as most people know his actions show that he most likely doesn’t.
And this is an ideal time to point out another extremely dangerous thing going on… Gates and Buffet’s challenge to billionaires to give away half their money.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of beneficiaries of this gigantic giveaway are or will be LEFTIST causes, since they’re the ones already set up as charities. We have to be prepared for even better financed children of the 60’s pushing their warped and distorted view of reality.
This battle may be a stalemate, but the war is just beginning.

If we never become so stupid as to trade CO2 emissions as a commodity old Al will NEVER become a carbon billionaire.

I saw that, too. I gotta call bs on that. I don’t know why, but my bs meter went off the charts when I read billionaires were lining up for the game. Something has been promised to somebody. I don’t know what, why or how, but I know my meter broke the glass. OTOH, what’s a billion when the U.S. is giving away trillions? I think that is where the game is being played, I just don’t know what the name of the game is. Probably something like “grabbing the money.” Note, half of the bailout is still unspent. I’m wondering how it would benefit the billionaires of this world to give away half of their worldly possessions? Half of the bailout is still unspent.

Yeh, but then they have to argue David Ricardo was wrong. In the end, they are Malthusian. Life isn’t precious to them, life is an abomination to them. Thus, CO2 is an abomination. They don’t really give a rat’s azz about whether the earth is warmer or not,(see the change of vernacular from global warming to climate change) they care about being deciders of who stays and who must go in the name of our common(collective) good and welfare.

How many on the sceptical side have called his bluff and challenged him to debate the subject?

I think, if he were forced to assess the evidence of the IPCC, he wouldn’t hesitate to agree with you. CAGW isn’t his argument. He’s stated he is a Malthusian. In spite of all the vitriol, the CAGW crowd are, in most part, Malthusian. We have, and should continue to, beat them down at every avenue regarding CAGW/CC, but, this isn’t where the fight is. It is a “red herring”. Listen to the shift in the argument.(Cooling, warming, extremes, more warming, floods,…ect) It always comes back to the same theme. “We can’t continue to use up the earth’s resources.” The fact of the matter is, if we found some mineral on the moon we could use, people would object.
People live, people breed, LIFE, in human terms, must be accommodated.
Edward Gibbons put it better than I …….”We improve ourselves by victories over ourself. There must be contests, and you must win.”……..if this is true for the individual, how much greater is the truth for humanity?
This is the greatest question before humanity today. Be it in the form of global warming, or climate change, or ecological overshoot, it is a contest that must be won. In spite of the great challenge, failure to do so is unimaginable.

Yeah.
Funny —not really— how it is, that actually breaking out in a sweat, i.e., engaging is honest labor, seems anathema to earning a living anymore.
Why is it, that when one is ‘born’ into the lap of luxury, that he condescendingly feels compelled to lord it over everyone else?
Mr. Gore has likely never known an honest day’s work in his whole pitiful life, yet he would seek to ‘lord it’ over the rest of us.

O guess there answer is to ramp up the fear factor, what else are they going to do….
“It’s been a summer of near biblical climatic havoc across the planet, with wildfires, heat and smog in Russia and killer floods in Asia. But the moment the Petermann glacier cracked last week — creating the biggest Arctic ice island in half a century — may symbolize a warming world like no other.
“It’s so big that you can’t prevent it from drifting. You can’t stop it,” said Jon-Ove Methlie Hagen, a glaciologist at the University of Oslo.
Few images can capture the world’s climate fears like a 100-square- mile (260-sqare-kilometer) chunk of ice breaking off Greenland’s vast ice sheet, a reservoir of freshwater that if it collapsed would raise global sea levels by a devastating 20 feet (6 meters).”

Thank you so much, Gore. Thanks to you and your gang of “global warming” liars, we, in Britain, are now facing a massive rise in so-called “green taxes”. From September, thousands of British businesses will be liable for significant fines and charges under a new government “green tax” scheme. Companies that fail to register their energy use by next month will be hit with fines that could reach £45,000 under the new little-known rules. Those that do participate in the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) initiative by declaring their energy use will face charges for every ton of so-called “greenhouse gas” they produce.
These payments are expected to average £38,000 a year for medium-sized firms, and could reach £100,000 for larger organizations. Surveys have shown that thousands of businesses are unaware they are supposed to be taking part, or even that the scheme exists at all. The imposition of new charges and fines will put pressure on firms at a time when economists are warning of a “double dip” recession as companies, consumers and the public sector all cut their spending.
Business leaders criticised the CRC — which was created by Labour but implemented by the Coalition — as “complex and bureaucratic”. One accused ministers of swinging “a big hammer” at companies and questioned whether it would have any environmental benefits.
Under the scheme, any company or public sector organization that consumes more than 6,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy a year – meaning a power bill of about £500,000 – must register its energy use by the end of next month. From April, firms will need to buy permits for each tonne of carbon dioxide emitted. For those using 6,000MWh, that could mean £38,000. The scheme is intended to create a financial incentive to cut energy use, and those organizations that record the biggest reductions will get bonuses, funded by penalties imposed on those with the worst record.
Of about 4,000 organizations estimated to qualify for the scheme, only 1,229 have registered to date, leaving thousands at risk of fines. Missing the Sept 30 deadline will mean an immediate £5,000 fine, and £500 for each day after that, up to a maximum of £45,000. Another 15,000 smaller organizations are also required to register and could be expected to buy permits in the future. If they miss the September deadline, they face fines of £500.
One recent survey suggested that 53% of executives had not even heard of the CRC and did not know whether their firm was affected. Bob Jarrett, of the BHF-BSSA Group, a trade body that represents thousands of independent shops, said ministers had not done enough to explain or justify the CRC. “We’ve only come across this in the last few weeks, and yet the deadline is at the end of next month. The Department for Energy has not given this nearly enough publicity,” he said.
The Environment Agency, which will run the scheme for the Government, has refused even to publish a list of the companies that are required to register, citing the Data Protection Act. The Coalition is pressing ahead with the CRC despite Conservative pledges to cut red-tape on businesses.
…So there you have it. A scheme that has no environmental benefits will force your business (whatever size) to register with a government agency or face massive fines. Having registered, you then have to record how much “greenhouse gas” your company produces (at your own expense, of course). Then you just have to buy permits in order to carry on doing what you were doing in the first place, but if you buy too many permits you will also have to pay extra fines and penalties for your excessive “emissions”. And all this is because of the lying propaganda that has brainwashed a generation into believing that carbon dioxide is causing “catastrophic global warming”. That’s what AGW is really all about, and, thanks to Gore and his pack of liars, it’s heading for the US next.

I understand Al Gore causes anger, but a few postings go to far in my opinion, namely:
Dr. Dave (August 10, 2010 at 9:35 pm) who calls him a “dung heap” – I agree with the rest Dave says –
and Brian Johnson uk (August 10, 2010 at 9:42 pm) who writes: “The Carbon Offset Trading Gore/Blood combo is totally covered in flies. Nasty, dirty lying flies.”
I hope WUWT is and stays a blog where I can send my warmist friends to read up on the facts. The more we have a calm discussion of the facts, the more chance there is they will spend enough time on WUWT to assimilate the facts that free them from the warmist propaganda.

Bastards!!! This is a badge of honour my friends.
““They [the skeptics] did damage and cast doubt,” Gore said.”
This is the job of a sceptic. Gore should now say “the debate is over” and let’s all find some usefull employments and earn an honest days work.
As for the National Wildlife Federation they are well advised to steer well away from Gore and concentrate of protecting wildlife in general and forget about the trace gas co2. Co2 is at the base of the food pyramid chain whilewildlife is at the top. Can’t they see the bitter irony? Gore and his ilk may soon be tarred and feathered within a couple of years.

Here is one possible reason for calling us “bastards” namely:

“Stung by the failure to secure a Senate vote on climate and energy legislation and wary of a possible GOP-led Congress, leaders of some of the country’s most influential green groups are moving cash and staff away from cap and trade……Meanwhile, the environmental community is split over any shift away from cap and trade.
……
American Petroleum Institute President Jack Gerard said the climate bill died because it lacked public support, something that won’t improve by pursuing a strategy that emphasizes EPA, states and power plant permits given concerns about other pocketbook issues.
“If they push too hard, there’s potential for further backlash,” Gerard said. “As they continue to raise the specter that they’re threatening jobs and economic recovery, then I think they’ve failed to listen closely to what the public is saying.”
……….
“At this point, there’s going to be a rebellion,” said Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.). “EPA is likely to see its powers substantially curtailed.””

From my RSS reader…speaking of believers gone wild, here’s one who told a conference last week that, faced with a choice between planting trees for carbon credits or using the land for food production, “We must not think food is special”. It was a head to head debate between NIWA climate scientists and NZ-based skeptics Ian Wishart and Barry Brill. Interesting reading, and the believer walked out when the debate wasn’t going his way.

Though I’m rather late to the party on this story, allow me to take on Mr. Gore’s assertion that the government has failed us.
If the point of any form of representative democratic government is to provide a forum for the orderly debate of issues affecting the whole electorate, then it follows logically that all of the points of view within that electorate be provided at least as much credence and voice as they exist within the population at large. If the point of view held by Mr. Gore were the only point of view active within the whole population, then, yes, I would agree that the government has failed us by not enacting a federal legislative mandate.
But that’s not the case.
There are indeed other points of view held by those within the electorate, and in order for our representative democracy to actually do it’s job, those points of view must be provided the same credence and voice as Mr. Gore’s. Additionally, there’s the matter of perceived level of importance which must be taken into account. As our economic position has continued to erode, evidence continues to mount that the public at large place the whole climate change issue at a steadily lower level of importance as compared with other concerns. I don’t think that’s even particularly controversial at this point in time. People care much more about jobs, keeping their homes, the wars in which we’re engaged, than they are about climate change.
So based on this brief analysis, since there are other points of view than Mr. Gore’s, and since the issue is declining in importance to most Americans, it’s axiomatic that our representatives to the government should rightly a) hear out both (or should I say all) sides in the debate, and b) ultimately turn their attention to the issues and concerns which weigh most heavily upon the minds of their constituents. Without doing both, they would indeed be failing us.
Mr. Gore’s assertion that government is failing us is based entirely on the dual premises that they a) should have suppressed any points of view different than the one he holds, and b) they should have placed much greater importance on the issue than the body politic does. But those premises run contrary to the purposes of a real representative and democratic form of governance. Therefore, we can only interpret Mr. Gore’s statement in one way – his understanding of the fundamental role of representative democracy is faulty, because it’s only that faulty understanding which can support the conclusion that government failed us.

During the Little Ice Age, when Ice that large was plowing down the Swiss Alps, nothing could stop it, except the prayers of 1 cardinal. See, this is what gets Warmist Alarmists into trouble. The public has caught on to the reverse logic, and they stop to think about it.
When it rains too much, you get floods.
When it snows too much, you get avalanches.
When glaciers melt away, they recede.
When glaciers are growing, they advance.
Maurauding Killer Ice Masses are not a sign of warming at all, they never were, and they never will be.

Well, I am going to try to say something about the climate science situation presented in this WUWT post without resorting to labels, tags or stereotypes.
a) Some people are critical of some published pieces of climate science.
b) Some people are publishing critical reviews of published pieces of climate science.
c) Some people are actively engaged on a steep learning curve to understand climate science and in the process realize that all is not as they are told. The science has not been settled and there is nowhere near any kind of consensus.
They (a, b, c above) are given a tag, a name and a stereotype that is insulting by other people. This implies that the other people are somehow threatened by the actions in a), b) & c) above. Note: several other behaviors by the other people occur as well that imply they are threatened by the some people.
Why are they threatened, when the above (a, b, c) sound like the reasonable behavior of any free independent person?
My evolving conclusion is that the “some people” above are facing a belief system that dominates the “other people”. It is my experience that it is fundamentally traumatic to a belief system to be questioned by any consistent use of the human tools of reason and logic. I perceive that any climate focused belief system is profoundly threatened by the reasonable behavior of any free independent person.
There have been suggestions on this and other blogs of compromise on disputed climate science to bring the disputing parties together for the good of all. I cannot find merit that there should be any compromise on principle in science. As for the “good of all” tactic, that is the fundamental reason why the two parties are disputing climate science so intensely in the first place, so it cannot be the basis for agreement.
The only solution to the dispute is the open practice of science. Everyone should see everything in climate science. Also, the peer review system should be opened up.
There, I think I said something about the current climate science situation without using any bad names.

Once again the alarmists are misplacing the blame. The average person has been told of “catastrophic weather events” with “no more snowy winters”, “hurricanes out the wazoo”, blah, blah, blah. It is the good ol’ earth that has refuted their claims, but they dare not blame it on her. I think it is quite funny that to the alarmists, Katrina had signal the beginning of devastation from hurricane after hurricane. Has not turned out to be the case. I believe I proved in my 7/29 American Thinker article “The Left and Its Talking Points” http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/07/the_left_and_its_talking_point.html that his side of the issue was almost exclusively presented ever since 1996 on one particular main stream media outlet. Calling all global warming/cooling alarmists!
Here’s where the answer to rapid warmings and coolings is… how they happen. We don’t need a bunch of confu$ion from profiteer$ of doom$, we need proper volcanic gas plume altitude monitoring and the temperature record to be accurate and not manipulated. Read the parts about ozone destruction, Al. Also ‘Year Without a Summer’
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratospheric_sulfur_aerosols
Timetable of major worldwide volcanic eruptions
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timetable_of_major_worldwide_volcanic_eruptions
Main article: Global dimming
The Global dimming through volcanism (ash aerosol and sulfur dioxide) is quite independent of the eruption VEI.[79][80][81] When sulfur dioxide (boiling point at standard state: -10°C) reacts with water vapor, it creates sulfate ions (the precursors to sulfuric acid), which are very reflective; ash aerosol on the other hand absorbs Ultraviolet.
So at low altitude you get warming, at stratosphere level or above its the opposite. But it always contributes to later warmings in a few ways. Ozone destruction and low atmosphere loading of aerosols.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_winter
More on ozone destruction…
Volcanic Gases and Their Effects
http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hazards/gas/index.php
To a small extent man does contribute, but something like Eyjafjallajökull can easily overwhelm that. I look for the oceans to quickly warm back up unless we get a good size high altitude eruption or two(3) pretty soon.

This is what the Book Of Anthropogenesis looked like on Earth Day, 1970.
Kenneth Watt, Ecology Guru:
“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”
and
“At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.”
Yeah. He said “nitrogen buildup”…
