You have to wonder, has Dr. Mann decided to pull a CYA in the face of Climategate, or is he just not cognizant of how ridiculous his statement is in the context of his past behavior?
Since “Climategate” Dr. Michael Mann has been on a nonstop media blitz. It seems he’s given dozens if not hundreds of interviews since the story broke on November 19th. It seem obvious that he’ll talk to anyone in an effort to get his point across. Up until this one interview, the message has been consistent with much of what he’s said and done in the past. That is, until this zinger.
In an interview given to The Morning Call, Dr. Mann was able to alienate both sides of the debate with a single sentence:
“I would call them contrarians or, frankly in some cases, climate change deniers,” he said. “I’m a skeptic. When I see a scientific claim being made, I want to see it subject to scrutiny and validation.”
Climatician, heal thyself. Start with a mirror.
Yet, while saying things like:
“I wish in retrospect I had told him, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t even be thinking about this,’” [reference to deleting emails]
… when his own work is subject to “scrutiny”, he has to resort to FTP data folders labeled “censored“. Look at what happens when that Mann “censored” data is used.

I’m happy to use anything to help the Hockey Stick fall apart. The fact that this comes from one of its co-creators is perhaps indicative of the personality-type that Establishment climate science in its present form attracts.
I’m always curious how these people correlate small changes in sea level with CO2 from fossil fuels. That is quite a stretch, given that sea level has increased over 100 metres in the last 20,000 years.
Mann has said nothing different in this interview than what he has always said: humans are dangerously warming the planet, hurricanes are becoming stronger, temperatures are higher than ever in the last 1,000 years, polar bears are threatened and the atoll islands are doomed.

They are interviewing only the criminals and NO ONE else. This is the largest scientific hoax of all time and the media remains asleep. On the bright side, all the interviews that Mann has given since the release of the emails have done nothing to change anyones mind. The true believers still believe and we still do not have voice. What is very funny is that they seem to be blaming the skeptics and blogs like this one for the failure of their predictions. It would have nothing to do with them being wrong, would it?

Wow, he is slippery! Whenever asked a question that he could be picked up on he doesn’t answer with his personal opinion but sidesteps, referring to IPCC reports or others saying XYZ. When asked about something that could be tested by objective observation in the near future he says he doesn’t make predictions, but he makes numerous predictions when its something in the distant future or not easily testable.
When we think about Mann’s spelling of the skeptics he belongs to, we should ask which of them is correct?
I think that Mr Mann only belongs to the intersection of the groups of skeptics and sceptics – i.e. he has the properties that skeptics and sceptics have in common. He is a septic.

Now, as I understand it form icecore data, at least the last three interglacials over the last 400,000 years, were considerably warmer than today by at least 5°C, so why does Mann choose to use an example of100 million years ago?
A BBC Horizon programme a few years ago talked about the causes of mass extinction several hundred million years ago of 95% of all life as a result of a fairly rapid rise in global temps of 10°C. Theory upon theory was aired in the show, but none seemed to be complete, but they eventually plumped for one whereby the Siberian basalt volcanic eruptions raised the global temperature by 5°C, (Earth would have been in Pangea at that time) but which was insufficient to cause mass extinction in itself, but in turn would cause the melt of methane clathrates beneath the sea which it was claimed would cause a further 5°C rise in temperatures, thus causing the mass extinction. I am guessing that theory has been ditched in light of the previous para? I am no expert!
O.T. But has anyone noticed the Arctic ice coverage. It is at it’s highest since 2003 despite the “record Feb high anomalies” concentrated in the Arctic region.

Man made global warming or Mann made global warming?
I think man made global warming fits the theory perfectly only not in the way the theorys proponents describe.
They started with a theoretical model which perfectly aligned itself to a socio political narrative, because those who saw AGW as a pefect vehicle to enact this new socio political model had the control of the purse strings it provided compliant scientists with generous funding to supply evidence to back the theory up.
The temptation to find evidence where none exists can be almost irresistable when continued funding depends on finding those links and proofs, we all know that when the rewards are high enough most of us will justify almost anything to ourselves and others.
The essence of the AGW theory is that it became a perfect vehicle for a political narrative and as such the temptation to make the evidence fit the theroy became just too tempting, too much money became available too quickly to scientists starved of funding, he who pays the piper calls the tune. The moral of the story is simple and frankly the lessons of history have already shown us the dangers, science and politics should never be mixed.
Unless we learn from the mistakes of histroy we are doomed to repeat them until we do learn those lessons.

Climate change deniers? This makes my head explode, no one denies climate changes. I want someone to ask if he would put a percentage on the possibility of cooling vs warming and have they studied the effects of possible cooling?
I’ve heard of the “Stockholm Syndrome”, but is there such a thing as the “Copenhagen Syndrome”?
Any time one of these rent-seeking scientists claims to be a skeptic, they should be asked to provide past documentation showing that they considered and researched other plausible reasons for their observations, such as natural climate variability. But no, it’s all alarmism, all the time. That’s where the government and NGO grant money goes. And skeptical scientists rarely get a dime of it.

The future playout of climate science direction depends almost solely on those who disburse the funds for grants. It is those people who will decide if people like Mann, Jone, and many others of the old guard CAGW will continue as they have before.
Mainly gov’ts, and some related NGO’s disburse the majority of grant funds. Have they changed their funding criteria since Climategate?
That is the main issue before us.
I see some change factors that should push the disbursers toward more balance in funding.
But this needs to be a main focus for anyone wanting more balance in climate science going forward.

In the grocery store yesterday Discover had a pair of interviews looking at both sides of the debate. Mann was one, Judith Curry was the other. Now, I have no substantial complaint with Judith Curry, in fact I might send her a thank you note for her efforts calming down the rhetoric, but Mann + Curry is nowhere near balanced, and certainly not enough to make it worth sending some profit to Discover.

When Mann did his first post-Climategate interviews, he was hinting that other climate scientists should step up to the plate and defend him (even though he threw Phil Jones under the bus as fast he could in all those first interviews).

Well the whitewashing process isn’t limited to Dr Mann, and his maybe misgivings.
The latest issue of Scientific American has a full page Editorial by the Editor in Chief of SA, who embarks on a rambling dissertation trying to bolster the AGW doctrine.
She starts by asserting (without proof) that 1000 e-mails were stolen from the University of East Anglia CRU; and made public. I’m sure SA will carry an article outlining the dastardly deed in all its Gorey details. Well maybe it will be the 50 years ago curiosity item in their 2060 April edition.(if there is one; to steal a comment from Winston Churchill (to George Bernard Shaw)).
I’d still like to see even the faintest glimmer of a suggestion that indicates theft. (well nothing was actually taken was it ?)
Madam editor goes on to whine about the collapse of Copenhagen; in its failure to enforce draconian measures of no apparent climate consequence on a crumbling economic condition.
Of course there was no mention of such Jewels of wisdom such as Smokey posts above 10:50:00 ; nor of the incriminating code sections and comment that reveal how the conspirators “hide the decline”.
She goes on to mutter something about “the preponderance of the evidence”.
A wonderful principle for the civil courtroom; but never accepted for the Criminal case; nor for that matter, for the scientific case.
Well SA, far greater minds than mine have offerend that it takes only a single no vote to trump a near infinity of yes votes in the search for scientific truth.
Science does not advance by concensus; nor by the preponderance of the “evidence”; and specially when the evidence is mostly made up by computers; and not matched by observations in Gaia’s laboratory.
As if her editorial pages are not enough room for the propaganda that this once proud magazine has become a purveyor of; there are some three major articles pushing the same line. Has anyone ever seen a contrarian article published in SA. There certainly are credible scientists or scientific teams, who can present cogent science that is contrary to the party line of the green left. They don’t try to whitewash the role played by rare GHG constituents of the atmosphere; nor do they try to promote them as the harbingers of doom.
Scientists of the future who stumble across current papers about “Climate science” will have no trouble at all dating the publication dates of their rare finds; any 8th grade high school science student could do it.
It is an axiom of “climate science” that observed “trends” in past climate are bipolar; sometimes exhibiting an upward trend, and sometimes displaying a downward trend; sooner or later it seems to change.
Contrast this with the future trends predicted; excuse me; projected by the authors, that invariably show a monotonic future. Upwards, in the case of atmospheric CO2 and earth mean surface or lower tropospheric temperatures, or sea level; or perhaps downward in the case of Arctic Ocean ice extent, and thickness.
So the publication date stands out like a sore thumb between the bipolar disorder of the past and the monotonic future of doomsday.
One area where one may safely predict a monotonic downward trend, despite a rising global population; might be the subscription volume of that once great Journal; Scientific American.
That trend will continue with the next lapse of my personal subscription; which goes back maybe 40 years or more.

OK, so I know what “man up” means aand what “man down” means and the “man-o-warmist” crack was hilarious. I even know what a “stick man” and I had thought that a “hockey stick mann” would just be a mann who makes hockey sticks. Turns out that is exactly right.
But he doesn’t make real hockey sticks he only makes drawings that REPRESENT hockey sticks. They are virtual hockey sticks. They aren’t real and they can’t hurt you. Unless you print them and then you can get a paper cut. But nothing serious.
For what ever reason though, he seems to have been paid in electronic funds which are also virtual, but unlike hockey stick graphs, can be exchanged for something tangible.
When you can start with something that does not exist, and exchange it for something that does, you have invented magic so advanced that it is indistinguishable from science.

BTW, some people called Dr. Mann “Herr Mann”… it occurs to me that Hansen, Schmidt and Mann are all familiar german surnames (the Hansen’s mostly in Hamburg as Hamburg was a founding city of the Hanse). I don’t think they’re a german fifth column. Probably they are just genetically predisposed to be attracted by disaster scenarios.

The broadly spread reality, is that only MM et al get favorably presented in MSM, and honest objectivity is not a basic componant of the moral compass of too many of us on any side of any issue. MM can do quite well preaching to the choir. Our side is growing, though we are not immune from that same flaw. The caliber of comments on most threads on WUWT is generally several orders of magnitude above just about any other site I frequent.

Six US presidents contracted malaria– our capitol being in Washington was argued against because the area was viewed as a “malarial swamp.” The Anopheles mosquito’s range currently includes vast areas of the US, Canada, northern Europe and Asia. Areas far colder than any winter condition found in PA. Malaria is not a tropical disease – it is confined to the tropics simply due to the tropic’s poverty. If the US returns to a similar financial state malaria will return as well since the mosquito that carries it still thrives here. Dr Mann is disingenuous citing West Nile -it is recent and invasive in origin. There were also apocalyptic claims about West Nile when it was first identified.
What should worry us most: All global warmers/climate changers are all millionaires or billionaires. That is UNJUST!

I am also a sceptic, in that I want to see the evidence and arguments for a claim. And of course this way of thinking also applies to claims in other fields as well as science.
Importantly, scepticism is also independent of the subject matter, so no one person or group can claim “ownership” of this stance.

Has anyone heard this news. Professor James Schneider and a journalist colleague froze to death in the Antarctic. This is an example of scientists underestimating just how cold the Antarctic can get. Heres a comment from a famous old Penn state attendee.
I suggested in a speech off the Penn State Campus, but here in State College, that Penn State sponsor a series of debates on campus with some of the people Dr. Mann has called “contrarians” that are just as decorated as he is as far as academic credentials go ( Dr Roy Spencer, Dr. Richard Lindzen come to mind). As a degreed Penn State meteorologist (1978) I, and many of the alumni and FORMER FACULTY from that era do not buy into the co2 argument beyond a debatable point. If Dr. Mann is so sure, surely he can have “success with honor” as is Penn States motto by vanquishing his foes in debate. As of this writing, I have seen no evidence that any debates are being set up.
Lord Chris Monckton has been after Al Gore for years and of course Gore wants no part of such thing. However the high minded such as Lindzen and Spencer do, and I would certainly hope, Dr. Mann would too, the chance to enlighten the public on this matter in a spirited joust. It would go a long way to informing people and perhaps bringing this into the open where it should be!
It would also help clear the name of the university and make it look to be shining star to those of us
that went there believe it to be. Perhaps I am more emotional, since as a former PSU wrestler, I spilled
blood and sweat there, also.

In my experience, the climatologists (is that even a branch of science??) are at odds with astrophysicists, physicists of all kinds, geologists, biologists like me and meteorologists like Anthony.

Lt. Col. James Doolittle led the raid on Tokyo – a gaggle of B-25 bombers launched from the carrier Hornet (yes, you read that right) bombed Tokyo, and then continued to China where most of them ditched. Payback for December 7th, less than 4 months earlier. He won the Congressional Medal of Honour for that, the “Doolittle Raid”
Doolittle was also one of the few pilots to ever tame the GeeBee high-speed propellor plane (essentially a HUGE engine with a propellor on the front, and stubby little after-thought wings…) And yup, he was commonly called Jimmy… Got promoted to Brig. General without ever being a bird colonel.

I think Mann needs a cat scan to find that walnut sized brain tumor, that has disrupted his self image, it appears to still be growing, I am not a doctor, but I worked in a psychiatrist’s office for 9 years. I have seen several cases same as his, five were operatable.

I am amazed that the spoof reference to Jimmy Doolittle went over most readers heads. What happened to History as a subject? General Doolittle died some years ago at the age of 96 after a lifetime of service to the US, including active military service through both world wars, learning to fly just prior to WWI and working as a military test pilot, among other things, between the wars. If ever an American deserved accolades, Jimmy Doolittle was that mas.
And I’m an irreverent Kiwi!
Bullying has always worked for Mann, and he is convinced it will continue to work for him – if he can just get out there and talk long enough.
But the bullying only worked because people believed the underlying science was sound.
The rug has been pulled out from under AGW. The curtain has been pulled back, and that Mann behind the curtain is just a flummoxed old fraud.
The world knows it, but he is just insistent that it isn’t so.
At the same time, this is no time for anyone to let up.
If the ClimateGate Report due later today does the expected “There is nothing happening her, people – move on” thing, let’s see how energized his bullying becomes.
