Tamino’s work is a boring as that cartoon makes it look. It’s amazing how much value some global warming believers put into what he says.

I saw a version of the VS cartoon with little chicks doing a random walk. Maybe this is a newer version.

Boiling down the VS thread as I understand it – statistically, you cannot say that CO2 has been the main driver of the warming that has occured since 1936. The warming falls within natural variability parameters. Who woulda thunk?
What is the size of the square root of a unit root?
(I, personally, have dug many more round unit roots than square unit roots, but thenagian ….)

On a slightly related subject, I’d love to see a comic strip series, along the lines of Dilbert, portraying the Climategate emails. I’m sure it could be made fairly humorous and at the same time portraying the inner workings at the CRU, perhaps tapping a complete new audience who would otherwise not read about this in the MSM.
I’m the miner (or was one). Except that I’m not bald and I wore a hard hat that my light clipped onto, a self-rescuer and a battery-pack on a belt that killed my back, heavy steel toed rubber boots and a banana suit.
We did not rely upon inanimate devices to keep us from getting killed all day long, we communicated and paid attention to every last detail of what was going on about us.
Which is why people like Michael Mann and Al Gore rub me the wrong way.
They don’t pay attention to the real-world details of what they are runnning on about.

Sharon Begley wrote a column for the 29 March issue of Newsweek that used an insidious straw man logical fallacy to condemn Climate Skeptics (she used the word “Deniers”) by comparing us to Creationists who do not believe in evolution. I took great exception to this on many levels and sent the email below to Newsweek.
I’ve subscribed to Newsweek for 37 years, but I’m pretty sure they won’t publish this, maybe you will, on your web site?
Dear Ms. Begley,
Equating the well established theory of evolution, which has been tested for over 150 years, to the relatively new hypothesis of man-made global warming is both a logical fallacy and a cheap debating technique. Man-made global warming is so new and untested that a mere 35 years ago most climate scientists believed we were headed for an ice age.
Being a climate skeptic does not mean we are ignorant, nor that we are “deniers.” Both are cheap emotionally charged insults. It simply means that we are not convinced that increasing the level of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which is food for plants, is causing the world to get warmer, or is dangerous to man and animals.
Basic physics and chemistry do not support this idea, Carbon Dioxide cannot cause that much of a change. The evidence (if you can call it that) that CO2 can increase the atmospheric temperature is mostly from computer models that allow CO2 to increase temperature indirectly though water vapor. There is no evidence that this secondary effect is possible or works the way the models postulate. Increasing water vapor levels usually means more clouds that reflect heat, they don’t trap it. The effect of clouds is not included in any of the published computer models.
There is more evidence in the ice core record and in basic physics and chemistry that rising temperatures cause an increase in CO2, not the other way around.
Basically, your assumption that man-made global warming, through increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is true, is way ahead of where the science is today. If all current challenges to the hypothesis are answered and no new ones come up in the next 100 years, it will be at the level of the theory of evolution. Until then, all true scientists should be skeptical. Honest skepticism = science. Let’s leave faith in the churches, we don’t need it in science.

It would be singularly inappropriate for a bishop to have a cohort in the original sense, because a cohort was a Roman army unit equivalent to a battalion, about 600 men. Since the Roman army is no longer deployed, the word has changed its meaning to mean a group of sorts, largely in science referring to groups of experimental subjects. What it does definitely not mean is a colleague or companion. Please amend, as such use is tabloid-level ignorance.

You do understand that if it turns out that the deeper oceans don’t store the missing heat – and thus, no heat would be accumulating currently – this would indicate the presence of at least one unit root, in other words, the temperatures could not be a rising trend plus noise in that case?
This would be the end of the current AGW theory. And the deeper ocean is their last hope because the accumulating heat is neither in the atmosphere nor in the upper ocean (0-700m).
So, the image reflects the threat pretty well i think.
