On a normal day, Majken Friss Jorgensen, managing director of Copenhagen’s biggest limousine company, says her firm has twelve vehicles on the road. During the “summit to save the world”, which opens here tomorrow, she will have 200. “We thought they were not going to have many cars, due to it being a climate convention,” she says. “But it seems that somebody last week looked at the weather report.”
Ms Jorgensen reckons that between her and her rivals the total number of limos in Copenhagen next week has already broken the 1,200 barrier. The French alone rang up on Thursday and ordered another 42. “We haven’t got enough limos in the country to fulfil the demand,” she says. “We’re having to drive them in hundreds of miles from Germany and Sweden.”
And the total number of electric cars or hybrids among that number? “Five,” says Ms Jorgensen. “The government has some alternative fuel cars but the rest will be petrol or diesel. We don’t have any hybrids in Denmark, unfortunately, due to the extreme taxes on those cars. It makes no sense at all, but it’s very Danish.”
But wait, there’s more!
The airport says it is expecting up to 140 extra private jets during the peak period alone, so far over its capacity that the planes will have to fly off to regional airports ā or to Sweden ā to park, returning to Copenhagen to pick up their VIP passengers.
As well 15,000 delegates and officials, 5,000 journalists and 98 world leaders, the Danish capital will be blessed by the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio, Daryl Hannah, Helena Christensen, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Prince Charles. A Republican US senator, Jim Inhofe, is jetting in at the head of an anti-climate-change “Truth Squad.” The top hotels ā all fully booked at Ā£650 a night ā are readying their Climate Convention menus of (no doubt sustainable) scallops, foie gras and sculpted caviar wedges.

I note that over the weekend from several little snippets of news, the NOO Labour Environmental Public Broadcasting Corporation, or BBC as it is better known, has been doing its straw man task of commenting on the “stolen” emails as embarrassing, but as “experts have pointed out” the “evidence” for manmade Climate Change is “overwhelming”, 4,000 IPCC scientists around the world have apparently said so! Funny that, I thought they were all in Copenhagen? Ā£650 per night, that is around Ā£10,000,000 per night all in without journos, & that’s just for accommodation for starters, before the absolutely essential expenses forms show up the good-time girls (hope Bill Clinton isn’t going?), & or boys, dirty movies, etc., although admittedly many of the girls are doing their bit for the environment by offering their services free of charge, presumably to offset their carbon emissions from such activity! No wonder we need to raise masses of taxes if this is what it all costs. How long does this jamboree last? 7 days? That’s Ā£70,000,000, add in the travelling costs, well double it (I nearly got a job at the CRU) that is Ā£140,000,000. How much good could be done around the world with that little sum, how many childrens’s lives saved (Madonna has only so much money & spare room), anti-malarial drugs issued, AIDS prevention schemes set up, empty bellies fed, clean water pumps installed, seed crops provided, etc? Of course, none of the aforementioned will be on the agenda. Wonder what kind of Hockey Stick graph would be produced with those sort of costs?

Re: the EPA v CO2… Why don’t they [EPA] all begin living on 100% nitrogen, so as not to produce any CO2 themselves. They can come back in a year and report on their collective personal observations. To be balanced, UN/IPCC should participate also – manditory!
As for the rest of us, we could live our lives hyper-ventillating, which would reduce the expelled CO2 PPM significantly. Bet we could get down below 10kPPM and maintain longer than the EPA can in their experiment (above).

I see that I will have to increase my estimate of how much this convention will cost the world’s taxpayers. It includes travel costs, accommodation and food (and all the other expenses), salaries, pension costs, admin etc etc. My original estimate of about 20,000 people x 10 days x $5000/day = $1billion must be way too low.

Is it not time for a SI unit of hypocrisy. To be called a “Gore” perhaps. For the first time scientists will be able to gather accurate data on the phenomenon and after the necessary adjustments, produce models which predict the future extent of runaway global hypocrisy.

I wish we could switch off the world for the next couple of weeks. Added to all the hypocrisy covered so pointedly in the thread, the thought that we have to listen to waves of politicians and politico-scientists competing to become the greenest is profoundly depressing.
All this macho posturing is simply an attempt to get the best headlines for individual leaders. The reality of climate change summits is that whatever the agreement, there is no mechanism in place to police the outcome. Expediency will always outweigh vote-losing legislation, so perhaps there is hope that a fews years down the line, when it becomes clear that the reality of climate change is cyclic rather than hyperbolic, that they will not have committed us, the poor paying public, to too much of a decline in our standards of living.
And also, perhaps after the beauty contest is over, the politicians will review the fundamental science, reflect on the true complexity of the climate system, conclude that the simplistic climate models currently used are simply not up to the job of forecasting, and therefore should not be used as the basis for planning anything.

The front page of today’s “The Independent” (UK) has the headline “CLIMATE CHANGE : THE FACTS” And refers to the included free 20 page booklet produced by the UK Met Office. I nearly suffered heart failure, such is my anger, after looking through it. They are still showing the hockey stick graph so comprehensively de-bunked by one of your contributors only yesterday. And, lo and behold, they also include a chart starting at 1850, so conveniently leaving out the MWP!!
The articles & editorial are equally vomit inducing, and the letters page shows the same slavish devotion to the cause typical of religious movements.

Slightly off topic I know but I just heard on BBC radio a review of the last couple of decades of the politics surrounding the issue of climate change. During the discussion an advocate of AGW came out with the line that the āScienceā supporting AGW had āhardenedā since 1998.
Iām sure Iāve lived through the last 10 years and thatās a bit different to how I recall things. In 1998 I believed in Global Warming. We were approaching a very hot El ā NINO year, Ice core data seemed to show that global temperature and atmospheric CO2 were in step with each other, and tree ring data and thermometer readings appeared to show that the pace of recent warming was unprecedented.
However, since then a number of key FACTS have emerged.
2001
āIn the 1990ās the classic Vostok ice core graph showed temperature and carbon in lock step moving at the same time. It made sense to worry that carbon dioxide did influence temperature. But by 2003 new data came in and it was clear that carbon lagged behind temperature. The link was back to front.ā

She must have missed the Met Office report about the big melt 2 years ago being misreported as an effect of temperature and actually being attributed to wind.
She can’t have checked the fact that the last 2 years have seen a recovery of ice levels.
Or perhaps she is basing her calculations on the cunning plan to redefine sea ice a 30/70% ice/water as opposed to the 15/85% traditionally used, thereby reducing ice extent massively at a stroke.
It is good to know that you can rely on professionals for the reality of climate change.

NASA’s James Hansen was just interviewed on Australia’s Lateline program. The transcript will be available tomorrow. He basically downplayed the whole Climategate scandal when asked about it, saying that the data has always been available, and that if there was anything wrong with it, it would have been pointed out ages ago. Of course he conveniently failed to mention Steve McIntyre doing precisely that regarding the Hockey Stick. And he failed to mention that it is the methods used that are the chief concern. The only criticism he gave was when some scientists didn’t release the data (i.e. Phil Jones et al), but clearly this fact alone doesn’t pose any suspicions at all for Hansen.
Hansen then went on about “tipping points” and how the 400 ppm CO2 level is getting up into “dangerous territory”. When asked about feedback loops, he gave a very poor answer, citing an example of an Antarctic ice-sheet breaking up irreversibly and also citing an example involving methane.
He talked also about the accuracy of certain weather stations. He said that in all their analyses, they only use rural weather stations, screening out urban ones due to the heat island effect. I wonder if anyone here can confirm the accuracy of this statement?

This is supposed to be a Q&A on Copenhagen. On the second screen down you will see there is a hockey-stick graph with no label on it to say what it is, but obviously intended to show the ‘proof’ of the complete nonesense they are all spouting. I saw another piece on the BBC over the weekend where they ‘debunked’ some sceptic points, one of their ‘debunkings’ said that it was incontrovertibly true that the earth was hotter now that at any time in the past several thousand years. So it looks like the poor old MWP has gone again!

The view of callers was ‘its the Sun’, ‘why if its so important are we building another runway at Heathrow’, ‘what about the damage biofuels are reaking’, ‘what proportion of the CO2 is down to humans rather than the rest of the planet’… I asked about the MWP, but it was ignored š

Apparently the ARGO sea temperature probes have not reported any warming in the world’s oceans. I read somewhere that NOAA are no longer using the ARGO data in their sea surface temperature records because of the ARGO ‘denial’ of warming.

The above is my favorite article ever on this whole business, which deserves a thread of its own because of its importance in derailing the blame-the-left meme here that Pam and others like savethesharks have objected to.
The blame falls on “the anointed” — the self-consciously “aware and concerned,” highly educated cognitive elite who resonate with one another across all sectors of society and buy into one another’s rationales, tactics, credibility, and value-priorities.
One of their main concerns is to avoid being consigned by their fellows in this group into the ranks of the “benighted” (the crudely selfish and ignorant), which is why accusations of being tainted by Big Oil or right-wing think tanks or Fox News or IDers or flat-earthers make such powerful and commonly used weapons by the groups’ mind-guards in keeping the rank and file in line.

Thinking, for the most part, is not taught in schools; and, considering all the bleating about UN conventions we hear these days, I call peopleās attention to the Convention on the Rights of the Child which, as I understand it, actually has the force of law in many countries:

NASA-GATE
What’s become known as “Climategate” may be about to explode on this side of the pond as well.
Chris Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, has threatened a lawsuit against NASA if by year-end the agency doesn’t honor his Freedom of Information (FOI) requests for information on how and why its climate numbers have been consistently adjusted for errors.
“I assume that what is there is highly damaging,” says Horner, who suspects, based on the public record, the same type of data fudging, manipulation and suppression that has occurred at Britain’s East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU). “These guys (NASA) are quite clearly determined not to reveal their internal discussions about this.”
They may have good reason, says Investor’s Business Daily (IBD):
NASA was caught with its thermometers down when James Hansen, head of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, announced that 1998 was the country’s hottest year on record, with 2006 the third hottest.
NASA and Goddard were forced to correct the record in 2007 to show that 1934, decades before the advent of the SUV, was in fact the warmest; in fact, the new numbers showed that four of the country’s 10 warmest years were in the 1930s.
Hansen, who began the climate scare some two decades ago, was caught fudging the numbers again in declaring October 2008 the warmest on record.
This despite the fact that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had registered 63 local snowfall records and 115 lowest-ever temperatures for the month, and ranked it as only the 70th-warmest October in 114 years.
Scores of temperature records from Russia and elsewhere were not based on that October’s readings at all; figures from the previous month had simply been carried over and repeated two months running.
Was Hansen, like his CRU counterpart Michael Mann, trying to “hide the decline” in temperatures, asks IBD?
Hansen has said in the past that “heads of major fossil-fuel companies who spread disinformation about global warming should be tried for high crimes against humanity and nature.” What penalties would he recommend for himself and his CRU colleagues, asks IBD?

A similar story could apply to the thousands of earth scientists who will be flying into San Francisco from all over the world next week for the annual AGU meeting. Some intrepid reporter might wonder why the AGU isn’t holding this conference electronically as an effort in climate change leadership. And how so many of these individuals rationalize a continual schedule of junket science in light of the ‘consensus’ on the damaging effects. Climate scientists, politicians, and Al Gore would probably argue that their face to face hobnobbing is too important. But when the ‘leaders’ routinely opt to exempt themselves from the restrictions they prescribe for others, carbon emissions start to look less like a moral concern, and more like Soviet-style party privelege.
They don’t have the courage of their convictions. Oh no, they don’t want to dismantle industrial society, they just want people to pay carbon credits to the gatekeepers (Al Gore, George Soros) for the privilege of living in it.
On a serious note – journalists appear to be picking up the occasional story line from blogs such as this – but they are missing the enormity of what bloggers have already spotted as strange/dubious/appalling.
Perhaps a thread titled ‘For Journalists’ would be useful – we could distill some of the findings we’ve spotted so far into media friendly language.
I’m a PR person by background and we’re not filling the media vacuum – after the initial WOW [snip] phase that caught attention, we’re not feeding the beast – unless we do, they’ll get bored and stick to the AGW diet churned out by the IPCC press office.
Attractive cut-and-paste stories are hard to resist for non-specialist reporters.

I think there needs to be some sort of political expose on the food-price increase that will come as a DIRECT result of farmlands becoming biofuel land – unless the biofuel is a byproduct of say food production.
I’m based in Copenhagen, and I was walking around town today. There are plenty of stands promoting the CO2 scare, but only one paltry ESA stand on the science. That science is outdated and distorted to the point where I did not find anything I couldn’t find fault with.
If anyone has need of men on the ground during COP15 for whatever reason, let me know. I plan to do what I can myself and as a minimum show up with the truth for the dec. 12th demonstration.

Remember the luxury dachas of the Party elites in the old Soviet Union? You must realize that what seems like a wasteful perk was really a necessary fixture in their selfless and dedicated service to the people. It is irrelevant that their system collapsed. Theirs was a just cause. They just didn’t try hard enough.

By the time you get done, it is not merely a billion of whatever currency, it is far higher. Watching UK Channel 4 news from Gropenhagen. It seems that everyone is going to limit the global thermostat to a 2 degree rise. How does that work, then? They all seem to be singing from a hymnsheet that I don’t understand. Can’t they see? Don’t they know? Even Channel 4 is hopelessly biased. And “Climategate”? Of no apparent consequence – they are sold on the IPCC, and hopelessly blinkered. They STILL think they’re going to stop “Global Warming”, so if, as it is likely, the globe is cooling, will they then bask in triumphalism in a couple of years to come when the temperature is found not to have risen, but to have fallen? Unlike conventional bio fuels that are made from valuable food products like corn or sugar cane, the contract is for fuel made from plant chaff ā an agricultural waste product.
Compared with regular gasoline, the so-called second generation bio fuel produced by the local company Inbicon will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 85 percent.

1. I know a way that all the people attending the conference could have reduced their CO2 emissions 100% : don’t go!
2. There’s no way that all those limos are using bio-fuels. My gut tells me that the press release on fuel made from straw almost certainly covers just a few of the cars for the top VIPs as a publicity stunt. The vast majority of the limos are being privately rented from private companies who will get their fuel where they can and according the the press release ‘The second generation bio fuel is not yet commercially available’.
3. The fuel being consumed by the cars is *dwarfed* by the aviation gas expended.
4. As has been discussed on this site many times before, the 85% CO2 savings on any bio-fuel is pure fantasy.
5. Look at the pictures : this is not scientific, or even a political, debate. It is the high priests of the Church of AGW preaching to their disciples.

793 gallons for over 1,200 limousines (most of which probably cannot run biofuel in the first place)? Really? I’m guessing that this is in reference to a few limos procured directly by conference. And that certain folks have interpreted the news, shall we say, irresponsibly.
Well this morning, I was able to hear a direct report from Copenhagen from Lord Monckton; the third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. He’s an extremely polished speaker; and his report was quite extensive (on KSFO radio early morning talk show).
If you haven’t ever Googled up Lord Monckton, and read his bio; you ought to do that to see just who he is. Even just as interesting, is to also read the bios of his father the second Viscount (British Army Bigwig); and even more interesting his grandfather the first Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. He was a prominent Attorney (counsel) who shepherded the abdication of King Edward, and the ascendency of King George VI (whose real name was evidently Albert).
Perhaps you may want to contemplate what might have happened in 1939/40 when WW-II broke out; in the event that Edward had still been on the throne. I have; and it gives me the heebie Jeebies, just thinking about it.
Yes we have much to be thankful to Lord Monckton for, and his family.
The final words of his talk this morning were “God bless America.”

Mt. Diablo was covered in snow all the way to the bottom. When I left Lafayette at 3:00pm this afternoon it was still there. I’ve never seen that before since I’ve been living in the SF Bay Area. I’ve seen almost that much snow on Mt. Diablo in the morning before but I’ve never seen it stay all day.
Oh, yes, that’s right, this cold is caused by the warming we all can’t detect is still happening. What a travesty! š

Agree with you Roger. It is not entirely out of arrogance this attitude arrives. But there is the sense of entitlement, and condescending stewardship. In this case the shepherds attempted to steward without first checking the viability of their story. And now discover that so much tampering has been required as to easily unravel.
Perhaps the shepherds will learn to confide in their flocks more – which will then grow trust between them. Not a bad lesson.

Yep, this could get dangerous. Many people around here have driven in the snowy Sierras with or without chains but, conversely, many haven’t.
I lived in Alberta, Canada for two years, and I’m from the North of England, so I’m not particularly fazed by this, but if it gets much below freezing tonight, it could be serious tomorrow morning.
I doubt that they have any gritters anywhere near here.

A chilly 15c in Melbourne this morning, where 24c is the average for this time of year.
Sydney was predicted to be 35c today, 40c+ in the west where I am, but it rose to a fairly normal 28c in Sydney. It’s actually quite nice out there, I’d say about 32c.
So much for the “catasrophic” weather on it’s way for NSW.

While I agree whole heartedly with your article, I feel the title should be changed. I see where someone had left a comment about removing ‘this dishonor to our Vets of WW2.’ The reason of course should not be dismissed and the play on words would suggest you knew what you were doing when you wrote the title. The attack on Pearl Harbor is still very painful to many Americans, especially those still living who were unfortunate enough to have to experience it first hand. I’m sure an apology or change of title would be greatly appreciated.
This is serious! Stag and hen parties across Europe will be denied limos because of this conference. They may have to stagger from bar to bar unaided.
It hit me this morning. I don’t think this is hypocrisy at all. Isn’t this just proof that those behind the climate change fear mongering don’t really believe it?
Think about it. If these 15,000 people truly believed that carbon emissions were destroying the planet, wouldn’t they find a way to have a zero carbon footprint meeting? Maybe video conference from multiple locations.
But they don’t. The insiders–those who know what’s really going on, have seen the really data, and know where the skeletons are buried–behave as if carbon emissions are meaningless.
I see this as another smoking gun that we are being defrauded.
