Climategate protester pwn3d CBC on live TV

How interesting that it has now risen to this level. Climategate? Quel Climategate?

This is a Radio Canada (RDI) reporter doing a live standup on CBC. That’s always a tough gig, I’ve done hundreds and you never know what the public around you is going to do.

Once I had to shove a person out of the shot who was grabbing for the microphone.

This of course is mild by comparison, but funny nonetheless.

I decided to add my 2c on my never visited blog.
http://blog.stoic-epicurean.com/index.php?blog=6&p=62&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
Summary: Hiding methods and data is from the Dark Ages, regardless of reasoning. Since this is occuring, we can safely say we’ve been thrown into another dark age of sorts. When politics exerts influence in science, this happens.
Oh, also, if the situation were altered just slightly, say the IPCC were instead an international asteroid-hunting agency… would the refusal of data demonstrating an incoming asteroid be tolerated? Would the attack-by-obfuscation of skeptical points of views be accepted? Not on your life.
But of course, it’s somehow perfectly acceptable when major media organizations choose not to cover scandals in political arenas that are demanding billions of our dollars.

I am concerned that this thing will be deliberately stepped over by the MSM and the politicians. They have too much invested in keeping the farce going – political careers, journalists’ reputations. Countless billions were already spent on on this scam – that means countless billions extracted from taxpayers’ pockets. My feeling is that they will ram new carbon taxes and draconian measures down our throats, regardless of devastation of economies. People who make decisions like these are usually well insulated from the consequences.
I am in Canada (green-socialist heaven) – not one major MSM outlet has reported extensively on this story, which is shaping up to be the biggest con in history – politically, financially and ideologically. Over the past several days, I personally sent links to several MSM outlets news’-tips emails, suggesting they research and report on this. Nothing – zero reponse or action. Sheople are going about their Christmas shopping, unaware/ignorant of what’s happening around them.

It’s funny to see that people think mainstream reporting of “CRUgate” by CTV & CBC would be good for nonalarmist forces in Canada (at this time). The nonalarmist, minority-government Conservatives do not necessarily want issues in the news that might erode public opposition to a unified left (particularly at this time, considering other items in Canadian political news at this time). Overly-simplistic linear-thinking is the answer neither in climate science nor in politics. Trenberth cautioned of a backlash; no doubt, PM Harper also instinctively recognized the paradox in the context of the bigger picture. It appears his divided opponents have yet again miscalculated. The exceptional regional variations in Canada make federal politics here counterintuitive to many.

Well, all I can say is it’s a marathon, not a sprint. In this day and age, we’re used to media pressure being focused to a pin-point on any given issue and over the course of a few weeks, a resolution found. But the great oil-tanker that is a scientific paradigm, perhaps like a religion, can only be turned around slowly. Paradigm shifts are generational, not daily or annual. This thing has been building for 20 years. It’s going to take at least that long to fully dissapate.
Good news for the popcorn industry!

The Hippie and the Corpulent
or
Ode to WUWT and Steve
The sun was shining on the earth,
Dimming with all his might:
He did his very best to make
Mans reason really bright–
And this was odd, because it seems
At Starbucks there’s no light.
The profs were griping sulkily,
Because they thought no one
Had got business probing them
After the fraud was done–
“It’s very rude of Steve,” they said,
“To come and spoil the fun!”
The sea was huge as wet could be,
The deserts still were dry.
The winds were swirling
Just the same,
As reason passed us by.
The questioners were honest,
The scientists would lie.
Hippie and the Corpulent
Were surfing on the net
They wept like anything to see
That Wall Street’s just a bet.
“If we could only scare the world”
They said, “we’d get their debt!”
“Oh greenies come and surf with us”
Hansen did beseech
A simple trick, a mindless trip
In Google Earth’s fake reach.
We cannot do with more than four
To give a mil to each.
The sober thinkers looked at him
But not a word they said
“We need to get off foreign oil.
Who cares what’s in his head?
I’m sure our ends are similar,
But we’re not easily led.”
But four researchers hurried up
All eager for the trick
Their thinking stoned, their tactics honed,
Their ethics mostly sick–
And this was RIGHT, because you know,
belonging is a kick!
Four other dreamers followed them
And yet another four,
And thick and fast they came at last,
The media and more!
All looking for a Brand New Car,
And dreamily at Gore.
Hansen and the Goracle
slouched on a year or so.
And then they stooped down from the heights,
Conveniently low.
And all the little acolytes
just waited in a row.
“The time has come”, the UN said,
“To pay for many things.
For sycophants and secret clubs
To fly and live like kings.
And private jets and conferences,
Rapt groupies in the wings.”
“But wait a bit”, the public cried,
“Before we pass the hat,
We all are in foreclosure
And the future’s fallen flat!”
“Panic!”, said the Goracle,
“Steve’s nose can smell a rat!”
“Hockey sticks and subterfuge
Are what we chiefly need.
Disable all reality,
This hoax we have to feed!
Some geeks are adding all this up,
Prohibit all that screed!”
“But don’t tax US”, the public said,
“We have to think this through!
Our math, so bad, but we can add,
Our earnings go to you!”
“The ice is gone!”, Jim Hansen said,
“Next summer, we’ll be through!
Real Climate thanked the remnant
and silenced all the rest.
For what use are the numbers,
when Gaia serves you best?
It failed to pay upon the day
the geek had fouled the nest!
“It’s such a thrill”, the thinkers said,
“To roust them from their dumps,
Of simple tricks and media
That kicked us in the rumps.
We will not stop until their ilk
Has taken all their lumps.”
“We laugh at you”, the people said,
“We do not sympathize!
Unearthing all your data
Has opened up our eyes.
The blogosphere is EVERYONE
you need a good disguise!”
“Oh peons”, said the media
You fail to see the light,
“The hoax goes on, the stocks are pawns,
the planet’s in a plight!
If we can’t fool you one more time
we will resort to might”.
And then the savior stepped up
to cover all our sin.
“The planet first, the world is theirs,
we never planned to win.
I think that math and all that stuff,
are subject to my whim!”
The people saw the UN
had made a secret scheme
to grab it all in pretense
of waking from the dream.
When really all they wanted,
was our financial cream.
The rest is up to you, dumb geeks,
the battle almost won.
Will we surrender common sense
or thank the quiet sun?
Thank EVERYONE who looks around.
and Watts is number ONE!
This Thanksgiving I’m so thankful to my personal daemon of whimsy and common sense, and to Steve and Anthony and all the watchers and askers who just can’t leave it alone.

– the new issue of Macleans has a two page story written by Mark Steyn. National Post has also written about it, but no one else has touched this story. No coverage from CBC, Globe and Mail or Toronto Red Star to date. I can’t think of another story that would be so huge on the internet yet be so ignored by the MSM. It’s over the so-called professional media as we know it. They have become completely irrelevant.

The only thing that annoys me is that the press and public are starting to listen as a result of this ‘hack’.
The hack shows poor data and dodgy programming – but this does not invalidate the AGW hypothesis. It shows CRU scientists planning to suppress dissenting voices – this is cause to sack them, but it does not invalidate the AGW hypothesis.
What does invalidate the hypothesis is SM’s sterling work in disproving Mann (whilst under incredible pressure to give up). But the press never noticed that. It was too complicated. A hack revealing a secret plot – now that they can understand. It happens all the time in the movies…

Rereke Whakaaro
November 27, 2009 5:54 pm

I just checked the BBC site, with a search on “CRU”.
Three hits: One on a story of how UEA is bickering over who to appoint to head an inquiry, and two on an interview by Roger Harrabin with his “contacts” at the CRU.
If, as the PR spin claims, the files were stolen, why do they need to appoint somebody to head to an internal inquiry? Why not report it to the police, who would presumably be unbiased in scientific matters? Just thinking.
And some interesting snippets from one of interview reports:
“The climate science website RealClimate sees the CRU computer raid as the latest attempt by lobbyists to discredit mainstream climate science at a critical time.
It explains in detail what it says is the legitimate scientific rationale behind some of the apparently incriminating emails, and says they offer a glimpse into the real world of science.”
OK, so “those dastardly lobbyists dun the job officer – it weren’t me, honest”.
and “the real world of science”, say what?
Obviously this journalist (and I use that term very loosely) has no idea that RealClimate is a mouthpiece for the CRU, as stated quite clearly in one of the aforesaid incriminating emails!
But wait – there’s more …
“It’s obvious that the noise-generating components of the blogosphere will generate a lot of noise about this,” says RealClimate. “But it’s important to remember that… gravity isn’t a useful theory because Newton was a nice person.”
No, gravity is a useful theory because it works, and it has yet to be disproved.
This all gets more banal by the day …

Just so everyone knows, “pwn3d” is a way to spell “pwned”, which is pronounced as “poned”. It is from the video game world and it means “to be controlled against your will”, or “to be defeated by a superior power”.
Some examples of this pwned expression in digital culture:
•”I got pwned by those three horde players. They ganked me bad.”
•”We pwned that other team, woot!”
•”Hahaha! Jason got pwned in arena today!”
•”That was total pwnage! We totally crushed that boss monster!”
Some examples of this pwned expression in daily life:
•”That speeder got totally pwned by that radar trap cop!”
•”We pwned that other basketball team!”
•”Oh, man. I got totally pwned by the aerobics instructor in class today. That was so difficult!”
•”Pwnage! I got an A on that exam! Woot!”
(Credit for the definition and examples belongs to about.com.)
In the case of Climategate, Jones, et al got totally pwned by who ever leaked the files. LOL!

I have a 1st class honours degree in Intelligent Systems and I don’t understand some of the stuff that Steve M says, although I can generally follow the reasoning with help from thread comments. I have absolutely no problem with the fact that it’s just too difficult to get your head around for the average journalist, who probably studied literature, classics or philosophy at University.
This is the problem; there’s too much to know and only a lifetime to know it. Areas of experise become ghettoised (is that even a word?). It takes effort, time, study and a great deal of reading to become fully aquainted with a subject.
Would you blame a journalist for taking it on a plate from the “experts”? I wouldn’t. It doesn’t mean they’re right; just that they’re in the wrong job.

@Paul Vaughan – my comment about “green-socialist heaven” – I live in BC – generally, as left as it gets in Canada. I’d also spent almost 30 years of my life in a communist country. Having lived here for over 20 years, many times I’d felt like I was back there again. And even after all those years, every time, it still sent shivers down my spine…Perhaps my green-soc-left radar is just forever too sensitive to any hints of parallels to past nightmares.

Fellow Canadians, the story is covered in the Toronto Sun, the Canada Free Press, the Globe and Mail and the Financial Post. I also have written to CBC and CTV to tell them what I think of their performance. However since I didn’t write it in French the CBC won’t read it. I doubt if they care anyway and I don’t watch them either so we are even. I did hear about the story tonight about the polar bears eating their cubs because there is no ice left. Right, at the end of Nov, there are no cubs and there is plenty of ice. I guess the story was on an American station and is out of season. I actually received a response from the Prime Minister’s office sending my email on to Jim Prentice. Now that the PM is going, Jim will have to send it back.
On behalf of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, I would like to thank you for your e-mail, in which you raised an issue that falls within the portfolio of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment.
Please be assured that the statements you made have been carefully reviewed. Just to remind us all how we got into this whole mess in the first place – and the warmists are still at it – I quote Lewis Carroll himself:

That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What I tell you three times is true.”

To say we as Canadians feel condescended upon, would be an understatement…
Many of us believe our Liberal Party has “Maurice Strong” ties to the clima-fascist movement…
Being that the CBC was staffed for many years by Liberal governments, it is essentially the Liberal Party’s mouth piece… They help the NDP too, our little socialist rump party…
I think this issue is really going to help the Conservative party of Canada (who have ideological warts as such) get a Majority finally…

The mainstream media have become the enemy of the people with this story.
I say let them have their rope.
The following is from a computer analyst going through the code;
For those of you who have been stigmatizing AGW skeptics as “deniers” and dismissing their charges that the whole enterprise is fraudulent? Hope you like the taste of crow, because I do believe there’s a truckload of it coming at you. Piping hot.
This, people, is blatant data-cooking, with no pretense otherwise. It flattens a period of warm temperatures in the 1940s 1930s — see those negative coefficients? Then, later on, it applies a positive multiplier so you get a nice dramatic hockey stick at the end of the century.
All you apologists weakly protesting that this is research business as usual and there are plausible explanations for everything in the emails? Sackcloth and ashes time for you. This isn’t just a smoking gun, it’s a siege cannon with the barrel still hot.

Re: maarten (18:19:13)
There’s a paradox. The BC carbon tax is about easing traffic congestion in Vancouver and minimizing the 2010 Olympic deficit [2 things that appeal to smart, wealthy right-wing voters]. The “BC Liberals” are not associated with the federal Liberals (despite deliberate federal media efforts to confuse Canadians about this); “right-wing” is presently “done differently” in BC [i.e. restrained coyness as opposed to the ruthless hyperpartisan approach that defines the right elsewhere] to ensure the right-wing elite retain power. Don’t be fooled by the loudly-screaming NDP & Green protestors (which, in practice, contribute only to keeping the left divided in Canada, which means ongoing right-wing rule). …& don’t forget about Quebec!

As a Canadian taxpayer, I am appalled at the CBC’s news blackout. Are we now living in East Germany of the ’50’s? Is Canadian television for propaganda and not news? Will the Stasi burst open my door and confiscate my computer as I am typing these words?
The lesson that we Canadian taxpayers can draw from this massive fraud and its coverup is that any time any MP or MLA, let alone the Prime Minister or any member of his Cabinet, says anything positive about “global warming”, or refers to “climate change” to justify some action, they are quite simply….LYING TO US.

He has done the same thing with every single important issue, even 9/11.
By the way, the journalist above was talking about the fact that apparently Canada got some more 5000 medical doctors in the system. Looks like somebody wants to stop a flood of medical doctors from immigrating in Canada because the Harper government said they were going to relax the rules of immigration so that people can actually work in their field once they come into Canada… for now, most of them, once they arrive in Canada, can’t perform their respective jobs even though they were accepted based on their respective formations.

K (20:12:08) ” http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2009/11/26/climate-change-hack.html […] I hope someone’s head rolls for this.”
Thanks for pointing that out. It should be a clue to many Canadians who are following this thread that CBC (left-wing) is breaking the story before CTV (right-wing). It’s not going to help the case of nonalarmists to set unrealistic expectations. I would be interested in hearing your assessment of how you think the (numerous) comments under the story might affect the proportion of Canadians who oppose a left-wing coalition; from a strategic point of view, that is what Canadian right-wing calculations will be based upon, since the left-vote is divided over 4 parties. In generating a realistic assessment, keep in mind that some people hold religious beliefs about this subject.
FYI for non-Canadians: The right-wing has been controlling the country with only ~35% support due to the 4-way division of the left-vote. Interestingly, ~70% of Canadians oppose a left-wing coalition, so Canadians will be interested in anything that might shift that number closer to 50%. Trenberth is wise to caution of a potential backlash if attacks appear overly-vexatious. From a Canadian perspective, I advise more coy restraint, less hyperpartisan mudslinging, and a return to focus on natural climate variations, which is where the real money is.

“not one major MSM outlet has reported extensively on this story,”
I think some of them are actually startled and shaken by what has been revealed, and scared to say how shocked they are. I don’t think it’s necessarily an attempt to downplay the story.
Incidentally, it was only the Washington Post that made a big stink about Watergate, at first. Their charges weren’t given a big play in other papers, just cursory mentions, until things really heated up.

Roger Knights

And some interesting snippets from one of interview reports:
“The climate science website RealClimate sees the CRU computer raid as the latest attempt by lobbyists to discredit mainstream climate science at a critical time.
It explains in detail what it says is the legitimate scientific rationale behind some of the apparently incriminating emails, and says they offer a glimpse into the real world of science.”

I think that, as I’ve said all along, some of the CRU’s seemingly incriminating statements have an innocent explanation, and that we should be explicit about what they are. We should not open ourselves to counter-punching and being discredited by being too accusatory. I also said that Phil Clark’s (SP?) list of justification for those statements should be posted as a thread here and responded to, with concessions offered to the points on which he’s correct.
It’s not too late.

“The right-wing has been controlling the country with only ~35% support due to the 4-way division of the left-vote.”
It sounds as though Canada needs an “instant runoff” voting system (losing candidates’ votes are reassigned to the voter’s next choice, starting with the elimination of the poorest vote-getter), which is more feasible than heretofore with the advent of computerized voting.

If I interpret your comments above correctly, I agree. I think Harper’s low key / follow the American’s / ‘let’s not destroy the economy’ approach to this issue is brilliant. I have little doubt what the PM truly believes regarding AGW in his heart of hearts, but he needs to play his cards correctly so that we don’t train wreck the country, as is happening currently in Oz. Al Gore is still out there peddling his lies about global warming, even in the face of recent revelations that the whole thing is a big fraud.
Here are a couple of reports (below) of how some folks in Chicago responded on Tuesday Nov. 24 to Gore’s brazen perpetuation of what he knows to be false. (We were the first to give you a heads up about this event.) We wondered on Tuesday whether Gore would be apologetic for the massive fraud that he and others have been perpetrating on the world for years now, especially in light of last week’s revelation of emails that show that climate data was deliberately manipulated and falsified. Predictably, he was not. Prediction: Gore will continue to see increasingly large protests, like that in Chicago,he continues to promote one of the biggest and most cynical hoaxes in human history.

Just an example of the one sided and unbalanced news coverage at CBC on climate change as Lawrence Solomon found out. David Suzuki seems to have the inside track at CBC . My impression of CBC on science and climate change is that they lack informed reporters who can tackle climate change honestly and fairly so they seem to just repeat what Suzuki and IPCC says instead of getting a wider point of view and letting the public decide what is real . Thank goodness we have National Post in Canada .It was the Suzuki foundation that was telling the public that Canadian winters would soon be a washout for winter sports . All this makes for poor journalism and a very misinformed public as a result.

Re: K (09:52:59)
The point I was trying to make is that it is the comments under the story that influence public opinion. Many people wouldn’t even bother reading a CBC story, but would be interested in reading the comments below (for example to see if they appear censored). I see the deterioration of CBC as arising from a counter-balancing backlash against what CTV is doing. If one “averages” the 2 sets of opposing bias, one may be closer to the truth (but certainly not at the truth).

Jeremy….But of course, it’s somehow perfectly acceptable when major media organizations choose not to cover scandals in political arenas that are demanding billions of our dollars.
Right … and remember that the CBC is the same organization that played MIchael Moore’s piece of trash Fahrencrap 9/11. I write my MP regularly about the CBC and how I’m sick as a taxpayer funding this garbage and I recommend that everyone does the same. The fact that my tax dollars were sent to Michael Moore is about as repugnant as it gets.
Regarding the lamestream ‘not reporting on this story’, of course they are not. They are so heavily invested in the concept of promoting glowbull warmongering and have been (are) in lockstep with the IPCC/CRU at each step of the way …. so they can’t report on it and no one should expect them to. Frankly, this entire episode is an opportunity to drive a nail in their coffin and send them the way of the dinosaurs.
