Not finding any, Gore airbrushes in hurricanes for his new book

Al Gore’s new book had a problem – no big hurricanes since Katrina to put in the book to look “threatening” to the USA. Any imagined link between hurricanes and global warming has evaporated.

Solution: the artists airbrush.

Ryan Maue, hurricane expert from Florida State University writes:

Anthony,

Not a lot of hurricanes here

The cover opens and closes half and half — so you only see one hurricane…as in the press release photo or the one on  Amazon.

But this is the real picture sequence from the book which I looked at Borders today and took cell-phone pictures, original (before the retouching by some “artist”) Note all of the Arctic ice and the size of the Florida Peninsula…

and the final product:

Now with 4 scary hurricanes - hey where's the ice?

WUWT?

A midget Southern Hemisphere cyclone is off the coast of Florida, another hurricane is sitting on the equator off the coast of Peru — and the Arctic Ice is gone (perhaps it is summer) and the Florida Peninsula is half gone

There are other differences I am sure you can find — but the hurricanes are just nonsense…

Ryan

Here’s the book cover:

Nonsense? No more like scaremongering, especially when it has been shown time and again that there is no hurricane to global warming linkage, and we are at a 30 year low.

Mr. Gore, you are a charlatan.

The hurricane spinning the wrong way next to Florida is really neat. It is probably caused by the center of the Earth warming up to millions of degrees.

After a quiet hurricane season, and a recovery to the Arctic sea-ice, this image is priceless. The man is a money grabbing buffoon – he must be a total embarrassment to the leaders of the church of true AGW believers.
I’m sure that this sort of distorted pseudo-science will drive even more people out of the AGW camp. If you can’t find a smoking gun, just make up your own.

It’s worse than that, Cuba’s gone Jim.
What the doctored picture is supposed to show is risen sea levels. Look at Florida and Central America. I’m sure though that the media will pull him up on the hurricane issue. Not.

Well, they can always use the term “prediction” for their fabricated picture.
Let me admit that I don’t find even the fabricated picture, with a couple of hurricanes and a missing Arctic ice, terribly lethal. After all, you can see that the color of the North American forests indicates that they’re doing just fine in that world, and other sectors of the life on Earth probably do the same.

Mr Gore is a poltroon and a mountebank (just to show his methods have been around a long time). But his similar forebears (not Polar) would have been envious of the quantity of money he has acquired through these methods. Let’s hope, that after him being booed recently, this book also gets what it deserves.

I like the way they’ve made continental look so much more arid despite all those cyclones buzzing around ready to cause massive storm damage and floods. You wouldn’t buy a science fiction novel that got their “alternate universe” so muddled up, but apparently it’s OK in climate hysterics.
Al Gore – not quite convincing enough to beat George W Bush in an election, but somehow the shining beacon of knowledge in climate science.

November 19, 2009 2:14 am

Hey, what are you folks doing pinching one of our cyclones?
Surely you don’t think gonna get away with it – it so obviously belongs to us!
The debate’s at boiling point downunder with the prime minister declaration that our heatwave (and ‘catastrophic’ bushfires) are caused by climate change. The best quote is the leader of the opposition in the senate, while canning climate change science: ”It really is a disgrace to describe CO2 as a pollutant.”

They removed the arctic ice, but left the snow in place in Alaska and northern Canada which is impossible They added orange streaks on the west coast and the western great plains, I suppose to represent fire, but not nearly enough smoke to match (nor would the fire be visible from space. They added a large arms to the hurricane off the west coast, the northern one looks detached. There is no way that a hurricane of that intensity would have anything other than subsidence around it.
The cover artist appears to know nothing about climate, weather, or any other science that I can tell. Perhaps it was drawn by the author himself? I assume he would have had to approve it.

This is simply and plainly fraud.
The original picture will have come from NASA or some other Government agency. That organisation will have the copyright on the picture. Editing without permission is an infringement of that copyright.

Actually, the Greenland “open sea” thing is only half wrong (to the best of my knowledge. There is a significant depression in much of the center of Greenland, so *if* there was that much melt there would likely be a large lake in the middle of Greenland. Perhaps they are positing that the increased sea level will even connect the Artic Ocean? I honestly don’t know enough about the geography to know if that’s remotely possible. It could theoretically be with tens of meters of sea level elevation (as they are obviously assuming based on the Florida coastline), but I suspect even in that highly unlikely scenario that Greenland rebound might still keep the connection to the Artic Sea closed.

Interesting. Central Florida (elevation 30m or so) looks to be above water, but the mountains that ridge Baja California seem to be completely underwater. I imagine the peaks near 5000 feet would form some small islands, but the numerous ridges above 1000 feet ought to at least form some larger ones.
Also mysteriously not inundated is the Mississippi River valley up to Missouri or so.
You’d think Gore’s artist would at least consult the Google sea level rise map application.

Slartibartfast

I did a few scenarios on that. What’s required to reduce Baja California to a chain of tiny islands is 2000 feet of sea-level rise. Of course, that also puts underwater nearly the entire Eastern US. 100 feet sinks most of Florida save a largish island, but leaves Cuba intact. Also it puts a fairly large intrusion into Louisiana, but it leaves North and South America connected.

I’m guessing you are genuinely humor-impaired, or think you just scored a point or something. Because, man, that cover is SERIOUSLY funny for anyone who knows anything about Science. Remember Science? That discipline that has been usurped by political activism?
I’m safe up here at 3500 feet, but the ridiculous inaccuracies on that cover are fairly typical of all alarmist “climate science”. Take a few disconnected possibilities, stir, and serve… it’s all the rubes really need, and those who see through it can be safely mocked and marginalized…

The reverse direction / Southern hemisphere hurricane off of what’s left of Florida is HILARIOUS !!!!
The IPCC had better hurry up and add “reversal of hurricane circulation patterns” as yet another potential climate change.

November 19, 2009 8:55 am

OK, Florida is still there. The highest point is Bretton Hill at 345 ft above sea level. Cuba is completely gone, highest point – Pico Turquino at 6,580 ft.
Panama – gone! Highest point is Volcan Baru at 11,400 feet. That doesn’t make any sense at all.
So lets just assume that Cuba is gone and sea level rises 6,580 feet. Here are the highest points in the following states: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_elevation
Say goodbye to:
Alabama 2,413′
Arkansas 2,753′
Connectiticut 2,380′
Delaware 451′
District of Columbia 410′
Florida 345′
Georgia 4,784′
Illinois 1,235′
Indiana 1,257′
Iowa 1,670′
Kansas 4,039′
Louisiana 535′
Maine 5,268′
Minnesota 2,301′
Mississippi 806′
Missouri 1,772′
Nebraska 5,424′
New Hampshire 6,288′
New Jersey 1,803′
New York 5,344′
North Dakota 3,506′
Ohio 1,550′
Oklahoma 4,973′
Pennsylvannia 3,113′
Rhode Island 812′
South Carolina 3,560′
Vermont 4,395′
Virginia 5,729′
West Virginia 4,863′
Wisconsin 1,951′
By my count that leaves us with 15 states. (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, NM, OR, SD, TX, UT, WA, WY) But hey, look on the bright side, the heaviest concentration of democrats and environmentalists are on the east and West Coast!

“Sahara Desert Greening due ot Climate Change”
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/07/090731-green-sahara.html
Images taken between 1982 and 2002 revealed extensive regreening throughout the Sahel, according to a new study in the journal Biogeosciences.
The study suggests huge increases in vegetation in areas including central Chad and western Sudan.
The transition may be occurring because hotter air has more capacity to hold moisture, which in turn creates more rain,

Quite a few folks have pointed out that some of the hurricanes are spinning in directions opposite to what they should. I deplore this criticism of (on?) his spin. When you’re spinning a yarn you have to go all the way, and what do the little ole ladies and the faithful know anyway. No the models are “robust” and Mann and Briffa, who have just published another paper on this very subject, say so.

They seem to have nuked all islands, except in the Arctic. Newfoundland’s gone, and it has 2000 + foot mountains, but Cape Cod’s still there. (Maybe they wanted to spare the Kennedy compound? ) They haven’t spared all peninsulas, though. Baja California, with its high mountains, is submerged. And it looks like they shaved off the south coast of Alaska.

If you’re looking to build a house, and the builder gives you plans that can’t be physically done, and has a history of overcharging by 3000%, getting rich off the process, and builds in a hidden back door so he can come back later to rob you of your valuables, shouldn’t that be an issue on using him as a builder? Speaking of weird pictures; has anybody looked at today’s DMI Polar temperature graph.
By some miracle of Physics, we now have a two valued function for the mean temperature of the north Polar region, or maybe they have plotted two sets of data; one for AGW fans, and one for Skeptics.
Does anybody understand how they get that graph; those wild up and down jumps of around 5 deg C seem to be hard to explain. How could such a large mass of ice as the region north of 80 deg suddenly change overnight by five deg C, and then just as rapidly switch the other way. There must be some pretty agressive “heat” flows associated with that kind of temperature change.
The JAXA ice graph though seems to have recovered, and the red line is now headed north in a hurry, back to ordinary normalcy for this time of year.
But I am getting ever more suspicious of that DMI temperature; and the explanation of how they get their numbers all sounds like gobbledegook to me.
Doesn’t anybody simply plot what the thermometer says any more ?

Alan J,
Gore, like Benford, Asimov, Bear, Vinge, Robinson, Heinlein and other SF writers, are of course going to have the most fantastic and fictional cover art to help sell their writing.
I find nothing wrong with a work of fiction showing hurricanes blowing backwards as well as displaying complete ignorance of geography and physics.
It is fitting that the backwards hurricane, an important logo from Gore’s SF movie, should be used on his latest climate fantasy. Many authors use whimsical symbols such as that as sort of an insider’s joke. for Gore, backwards hurricanes are sort of a wink at the audience.
Everyone knows Gore is just schlepping out this stuff to help with his deep seated need to make a lot of money. No one really paying attention actually believes Gore’s fantasies, do they?
I remember back when the ‘Blair Witch Project’ came out, how certain gullible people thought the movie was actually pieced together from an actual event, but could anyone be naive enough to believe Gore?
That would really stretch the limits of credibility.

Oh, bother

Well I’m not sure what they did, but now at least it isn’t double valued any more.
But I must confess, that so far I am unable to deduce from what they say on their site; whehter this graph is from an actual real live thermometer reading, or whether it is the output of some computer model, of what the temperature is predicted; excuse me projected to be, or what.
In any case the red line and the green line aren’t even remotely similar; so it makes me wonder what last years red line looked like. Izzat green line some kind of composite smoothed out low passed 13 month running average by month of some 21 year mean of something else.
I must say that the lingo of climatology sounds a lot like something you would hear on Coast to Coast AM from one of George Noory’s wacky guests.
All this year-on-year plot by month data submission. Do they speak English at any of the schools that teach this stuff; it seems that the verbiage permeates all the peer reviewed literature ? It is virtually impossible to deduce the data presentation AlGorythm that is being used; from some of the pigeon English descriptions of it.
It’s no wonder the alphabet soup media don’t seem to be able to gat a grasp of any of the concepts of climate “science”.

I never said that Gore is writing good fiction.
In fact, he is writing fraud dressed as fact, something no ethical writer would do.
And the underwhleming response of the market place, inspite of the incredible amounts of free media hype Gore has received, tells me that the public is even less interested in AGW than what the polls show. From 1988, when gore first ran for President, he has been known as pompous and dull. No katter how much he profiteers off of AGW hype, nothing can hide that. Gore is the demonstration of what happens when you put lipstick on a pig.
I am certain that the great one himself, RA Heinlein, would understand what I am trying to say, and let me off with only a small facial scar in the duel. ;^)

How does this junk get published? Also, you would think Gore would have an actual scientist look at his garbage before he published it. My goodness Al, the gig is up! You are going to have to get a little more creative.

Here’s a great story.
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/177346/climate-change-pushes-poor-women-to-prostitution-dangerous-work
Effects of climate change have driven women in communities in coastal areas in poor countries like the Philippines to risk dangerous jobs, and sometimes even into the flesh trade.
Suneeta Mukherjee, country representative of the United Nations Food Population Fund (UNFPA), said women in the Philippines are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change in the country.
“Climate change could reduce income from farming and fishing possibly driving some women into sex work and thereby increase HIV infection,” Mukherjee said during the Wednesday launch of the UNFPA annual State of World Population Report in Pasay City.

Al Gore is changing his ‘science’. He is now saying co2 controls only 40 % of climate. He is also making his message more about changing over to alternative energy not just to save the planet but because it’s the cleaner way to go and giving less emphasis to ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’ in the process. The exaggerations in his movies, he feels, are justified because he was doing it in the name of doing the right thing, i.e., the ends justify the means.
So now he’s becoming more about switching to alternative energies for reasons other than averting global warming.
I wonder if he thinks that his ends do really justify the means with many children who’ve seen his movie still not being able to sleep good?

This is no joke, these people are planning to change just about everything we do in the name of global warming. To publish something like this and to have it being promote as the gospel truth is a crime. This man must be stopped before he destroys our civilization. All one has to do is study history and you will find many examples of how religous fanaticism has destroyed many cultures. When you talk to people they really believe this is what is going to happen in the next couple years. This needs to be on the front page of every news paper in the world.

I concede the point. what I should have said was, “What’s sillier than the illustration are the assumptions behind it.”
Bryn: It looks as though we’ve got a reprieve from the governmental heel, now that climate-gate has broken.
I don’t think that carbon taxes, if passed (which I doubt), would have persisted for ten years if the temperature kept on flat-lining and even cooling. People in the US would engage in civil and uncivil disobedience, escalating from Tea Parties to tarring-and-feathering.

This is what the historian Boorstin called the “geography of the imagination,” typical of medieval maps of the “known world.” All that’s missing are sea serpents and unicorn at the ocean margins, and printed warnings, “Here be dragons!”
So does Al “several million degrees/no controlling authority” Gore summon us backward, to an age of ignorance and superstition. You CAN tell a book by its cover—at least in this case.

Don’t you know that AGW will cause all kinds of seismic disruptions? Tall mountains will sink! Sea level peninsulas will rise! Dogs and cats fornicating! Fire raining from the skies!
What’s so laughable about that image is that would’ve been much easier to use publicly available 3D topographic data of Earth then use any 3D rendering program to enclose it with a high resolution sphere then adjust the sphere’s size to set the desired “sea level”.
Keeping to the penny-pinching thing, Blender and trueSpace 7.61 are both free 3D programs and plenty powerful enough to create a much more convincing image of “elevated sea levels” than the amateurish POS on that book cover.

listen up commonsense, who are we to discourage a rebellion? lets not try to avoid the lower classes rebelling, encourage it! if they do not rebel and continue to let their countries be run by a few fat cats in their cities, that is their problem until they muster up the backbone to stop it themselves. as for the climate change, it is laughable. when i was in high school, i heard about climate change, and promised myself to be a neutral party until i heard the facts from real experts. i have traveled all the way to Washington DC and talked to five different scientists/professors. two who say humans have induced climate change, one who said it was a combination of human efforts and natural cycles, and two who said we haven’t changed anything. i kept an open mind during all interviews, and seriously analyzed information from all sides. i have come to the conclusion that it is more arrogance than anything else that convinces people that their actions are destroying the planet. to think that what we do as a people is so powerful that it messes up the entire world is pure exaggeration and naivety. The whole climate crisis is a manufactured media scare tactic to make money and is a front for a whole different global agenda by some. I for one will not stand by and let government dictate what i do in a free country (which as a side note is growing less free by the day) because of a fake public outcry against climate change, which makes them pass some bs laws (because they don’t care what is right, they only care about getting re-elected) that restrict my freedoms. As far as gore goes, he is a pitiful and pathetic excuse for a leader of of a global movement. here’s a funny fact, Al gore Lambasted president bush for being “totally ignorant” of green energy and climate issues. however, did you know that president bush’s house in texas is heated by geothermal energy and that solar panels and windmills create his electricity? His ranch is a carbon neutral home.Al gores mansion on the other hand uses TEN Times the amount of electricity that an average american home uses. his book should be considered closer to a george carlin comedy book than the “truth” it’s being portrayed as. slow sarcastic clap to the photoshop artists who didn’t bother to look at how hurricanes form or which dirctions they spin in.

What’s even more sad is that every single one of my reresentatives and senators that I write believes this stuff, and are using it in their excuses to support crazy bills!
“The Pacific Northwest has much to lose from climate change, including increasingly severe storms and rising sea levels. Global warming also negatively impacts forest, coastal, and salmon habitats, and economically-important farmland, as well as human health. ”
-Senator Patty Murray (Washington senator)
“Like you, I believe that a healthy debate among scientists is never a bad thing, and public policy should be based on the best science available. As you may know, the overwhelming majority of peer-reviewed scientific research supports the conclusion that carbon emissions from fossil-based fuels like coal and oil have raised the amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere during the last two centuries to the highest level that it has ever contained in the last 600,000 years. This research also shows that carbon dioxide is physically proven to trap the earth’s heat, raising global average temperatures enough to have already melted glaciers, acidified our ocean waters and unleashed a plague of harmful beetles in the North Cascade forests, among many other observed effects.”
Representative Jay Inslee (wahsington representative)
At least Gore did not airbrush giant mutant beetles onto the book cover, he could have gotten away with it on capitol hill ^.^

Cuba is not on the cover meaning it is under water. Google Earth has the highest point on the island at 2005 meters (6578 feet). Denver is about 6000 feet. Shouldn’t most of the gulf states and midwest be underwater? I am embarssed Gore is an American, mabe we can trade him off to reduce our carbon footprint.

December 31, 2009 7:59 am

The fantasy world of Gore is very much reminiscent of the fantasy world of Soviet Communism. When I saw the two photos in this article, my first thought was “the commissar vanishes”. It’s the name of a fascinating book by David King that traces the history of political photo faking in the Soviet Union. On the cover, there are four versions of one image –Stalin with three comrades, then two, then one, then Stalin stands alone. All three were murdered, then erased from history. Many pictures of crowds were doctored to make it appear as though many more people turned out to see the glorious leader that actually did. There are also images of industry (western industry) that were doctored up and used to show awesome Soviet technology.
Luckily Gore and his fellow travelers are still trying to convince us (the workers) that CO2 is the new Satin –and that he has divined a path to salvation from said evil. He congers imagery of floods, hurricanes, famine, disease, and pestilence. He sells Indulgences. He encourages the use of verbiage such as “denier” to vilify climatheists. But in the end, Commissar Gore is a buffoon, and people will distance themselves from him. I hope.

Er… you know that this image is a projection that is intended to show how climate change could lead to radical changes in weather, right? If the artist who created this image missed out on things like the height of Cuba’s mountains, and what not, it does not mean climate is not happening. Everybody makes mistakes… look at you guys… I bet most of you voted for Bush not one, but twice.
Once again… every major scientific body on the planet agrees that A) the planet is heating up, and that B) human activity is largely responsible.
But hey… I hear Sarah Palin disagrees with this, and she went to some university in Iowa or something, so she must know what she’s talking about, right?
And just as a quick note before I eff off… let’s say our CO2 output doesn’t cause the planet to warm. It is still resulting in acidification of the oceans, which threatens the entire foodchain. You may now proceed to deny this.
Go have a smoke… I hear they’re not bad for you. Smoke all you can if you don’t mind!
