Surfacestations update – help needed for the final stretch

I’m pleased to announce that after a quality control review of all stations surveyed so far we are now at the 80.4% mark. 982 stations out of 1221 of the USHCN network have been surveyed. 239 stations remain to be surveyed.

A Google Earth KML file has also been created to help volunteers assist us in surveying these remaining stations to the best of our ability. I don’t expect to get all of them, but we should be able to easily exceed the 1000 station mark and perhaps reach 90% before the end of summer.

You can download the Google Earth KML file which was used to make the map above, get it -click here.  [Note,  if using Internet Explorer, right mouse click and choose “Save Target As..”  ~ charles the moderator] It is very helpful in locating stations. Google Earth is a free download here.

For those who don’t have Google Earth capability, get it – click here, is the list of stations remaining that you can view in your browser. Both files are useful in different ways, so I suggest getting both.

Our goal is to find the few remaining “best” CRN1 and CRN2 stations. So far there have been very few of these “best” stations, 92 so far, making up only 10% of the network. The majority of those also happen to be ASOS stations at airports, and as we have seen from the MIC in Hawaii’s WSFO, ASOS stations have not been deemed suitable for climate monitoring, since they are placed for aviation purposes.

Here are the percentage breakdowns so far, plus a nice bar chart by Gary Boden showing the states that have been completed and those that need the most attention:

CRN=1 16 2%
CRN=2 76 8%

We have identified 45 closed stations, some of which have been able to be rated because the observer remained and could show us where the thermometer was placed, or we were able to find aerial photos or maps from NWS b44 forms that showed the location.

Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia are the states with the least coverage. If you live in one of these, please consider trying to survey a station or two. Details on how to survey stations can be found at surfacestations.org

Quality control checks performed:

Volunteers and I have been busy in the past couple of weeks adding some stations from recent surveys as well as doing a comprehensive QC on the applications  of ratings and the veracity of the station surveys.

Some stations that were surveyed were misidentified by volunteers, and thus have been removed and put back on the “available” list in the KML file above.

Some stations surveyed by aerial views only were misidentified, and this was made clear when when we went through QC reviews. We fixed those also, some were then correctly identified and rated, others went back on the “available” list.

I’m pretty happy about where we are now and what has been achieved. Finding the remaining best stations is the next goal. I’ll have more on that soon with some good candidates.

There will be another important post tomorrow or the next day on a related subject that needs addressing, stay tuned.

Apparently the goal of Greenpeace is to “beat climate change”. The person quoted is allegedly a scientist? And they call realists deluded?
Isn’t boarding and taking over a ship an act of piracy?

Anthony, I had trouble with all these links: Above, the kml file “here” link produces a page of html code, the surveyed already map on surfacestations. org produces a WordPress “Not Found” and the Google Earth “Download here” link goes to a page “security violation”.
REPLY: Try right click and “save target as”

“Isn’t boarding and taking over a ship an act of piracy?”
Um…yes, but you don’t get punished for it. Hansen jets over from the US, gives evidence that the ship was going to kill lots of tiny fluffy kittens, and with one bound you are free, while the evil ship owners and power station workers twirl their moustaches impotently in the background….

Anthony, That worked for the link above, but not for the two mentions on surfacestations site. Thanks. I’m interested in the AZ stations.

I got snipped for getting angry about the UK Met Office and our Chief Scientific Officer. Fair enough, ranting does not enhance this superb site, however I have self snipped my feelings about Greenpeace protestors and
Kings Norton power station……..

This might seem a daft question, but has anybody tried contacting the people who run these stations to see if they would take and submit photos themselves?

I take it these records are being set using flawed stations. Might the low temps be even lower than stated in this article? I cant help but sense the “The Cat is out of the bag” aspect of this story.

Georgetown, SC was closed several years ago. I managed to get into the nature preserve where it was located (appt only), but nobody could quite remember exactly where it was sited and it moved once or twice. I was able to photograph the general sites, but that isn’t much help which is why I never posted it. Clemson and USC have ongoing research in that area and got a tour by one of the professors – fascinating stuff but, alas, no definitive survey. I recommend crossing that one off. I’ll see what I can do for some of the remaining ones in the area as I have more time now.

“There will be another important post tomorrow or the next day on a related subject that needs addressing, stay tuned.”
Will it, by any chance, have to do with the “missing” stations? And would it be reasonable to assume that the “missing” stations are primarily in rural areas?
Do you plan an effort to try and track them down to add their data back into the climate data base?

It’s been my experience that the coordinates may not be precisely at the equipment location. Sometimes it helps to check with the NCDC station locator at: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/stationlocator.html
Find the station history link and click the map tab to show the several location the station may have been at. The current one should be blue.
Also, on the Google Earth .kml map, a click on the icon will pop up a balloon of information including a link back to the surfacestations database. If you see only air photos, the station was surveyed by internet. Ground photos are still needed.

So – over 75% now. What does it look like if you do an analysis using only the CRN 1,2 stations? How does the temp trend look compared to GISS, HadCRU, and the Satellite records? If you include or leave out the non-environment based corrections, such at tobs?

Anthony,
as far as I have followed debate about those station ratings here an over at Climate Audit, difference in trends between CR1 and CR4 and 5 station in USA was minuscule (I don’t know to what extent that was a result of adjustments). Wouldn’t be far more productive for exploring anthropogenic local warming effect on the final trend to try to collect data from, say, 100 or so rural stations all over USA (whatever their CR be), and compare their trend with overall reported trend or with that in urban stations? Is such a project underway?
REPLY: Yes such a project is well underway, and a publication will be written for the results and full data and methods disclosed so that it is reproducible. I’m not ready to publish it here, because the publication has not been completed. I reserve the right to publish first. – Anthony

“difference in trends between CR1 and CR4 and 5 station in USA was minuscule”
I am not sure I agree. The reported warming is not all that great to begin with. knock 15% of it off, figure that half is due to natural causes, and you have an anthropogenic warming of about .2C in a century. I am just using numbers to make a point, but you can see that this is not a useless excercise, even if the results, when they are completed, are not eye-popping.

Anthony,
If my memory serves me, there are two reporting weather stations is Wallowa. One is at the old Service station and has not been moved. The other is at a private residence and has been moved once. The one at the forest service station may have had a name change. Here is information about a bill that was signed into law that transferred the property to the City.
(3) WALLOWA FOREST SERVICE COMPOUND- The term `Wallowa Forest Service Compound’ means the Wallowa Ranger Station that is–
(A) located at 602 West First Street, Wallowa, Oregon; and
(B) under the jurisdiction of the Secretary.
(b) Duty of Secretary- As soon as practicable after the date of enactment of this Act, subject to valid existing rights, the Secretary shall convey to the City, without consideration and by quitclaim deed, all right, title, and interest of the United States, except as provided in subsections (c) and (d), in and to the Wallowa Forest Service Compound.
(c) Use of Wallowa Forest Service Compound- As a condition of the conveyance under subsection (b), the City shall–
(1) use the Wallowa Forest Service Compound as an interpretive center;
(2) ensure that the Wallowa Forest Service Compound is managed by a nonprofit entity; and
(3) agree to manage the Wallowa Forest Service Compound–
(A) with due consideration and protection for the historic values of the Wallowa Forest Service Compound; and
(B) in accordance with such terms and conditions as are agreed to by the Secretary and the City.
(d) Reversion- In the quitclaim deed to the City, the Secretary shall provide that the Wallowa Forest Service Compound shall revert to the Secretary, at the election of the Secretary, if the Wallowa Forest Service Compound is–
(1) used for a purpose other than the purposes described in subsection (c)(1); or
(2) managed by the City in a manner that is inconsistent with subsection (c)(3).

As I said above for those having problem making the file upstream work, what I found was that in IE8 that IE8 wanted to save the file as a .xml file, which I allowed it to do. I was not able to use it that way, however. But as soon as I renamed the file to a .kml file suffix it worked immediately. So take a look at the file you saved. If it is called Surfacestations_Unsurveyed_20090621.xml on your local harddrive, then rename it to .kml and you should be good. . .

I didn’t run Google Earth, but I found a database on the site of all the stations, as well as the albums of various sites.
There are different numbers being reported in different part of the site as to how many stations are covered. Plus, there are 0s in the table under surveyed, but then they are in the album with a form filled out by Evan, but with only Google Earth overhead views, and a description of the location.
I assume that such sites still need to be photographed? I drove by one such location a few months ago, but had no idea it was there.
For some of these sites, you can also use Google street view to get another pic or two.

Yes, I did a number of virtual surveys (over 200). When the sensor was not clearly visible, I would call the curator and get a precise location of the site. Details are in the station survey form (and I started adding the vital info on the measurement views). I preserved my physical notes in case they become necessary for sourcing.
This gives us enough info to rate the station.
But, yes, photos are best, and we want them when we can get them, even if there is a virtual survey on line. (I’ll often put up a measurement view to supplement a photo because of that wonderful Google ruler feature.)
By the way, guys, PLEASE bring a tape measure along and if at all possible, measure how far the base of the sensor is from the nearest concrete, structures, etc. “About thirty feet” isn’t a lot of help when the borderline between a CRN3 and 4 is 10 meters. And please fill out them survey forms! If nothing else, put your measurements on the form.
This makes the work of rating the stations a heck of a lot easier.
We thank all the volunteers.

My work would be alot easier if I were allowed to edit items previously submitted. As the “owner” of submissions according to the SS website, not being allowed to either edit or delete and resubmit edited info is a severe handicap to accuracy and certainly not in keeping with a “collaborative” and open volunteer effort.
These complaints go back many months if not a year at least.

REPLY:
You are certainly welcome to resubmit items by simply adding them again to the Gallery, and then dropping an email to me asking for the old one to be removed. That works quite well. And as I’ve explained some months ago, the software in its current form does not allow me to make permissions that handle this well. Version 3 of Gallery apparently provides for that. I can probably do the Dublin and Brownwood stations in a day trip sometime soon.
You’ll need some help:
Dublin, TX: 32.10000, -98.33333
Those coordinates are ‘WAY off. (Anything ending in “000” or “3333” or “6667” is bound to be a crude estimate.)
Station should be located at: 1350 County Road 320, RR 1, Dublin, TX 76446.
Brownwood, TX: 31.68333, -98.96667
Like I say, crude. I believe that station is located at 1511 Indian Creek Dr., Brownwood, TX 76801.
B-91 forms on both are relatively up to date.

If the stations are nearish to a road that finds its way to the Anchorage area, then I might be able to.
REPLY: After posting the story about what may become the coolest summer on record in Anchorage, AK, I got to wondering where they might measure the temperature in Anchorage.
The station that appears to have the longest record is the Anchorage airport, Hansen uses it in GISTEMP. There also appears to be one at the NWS office there. How about those? Let me know and I’ll locate them for you.

According to Anthony, Mora, MN and Grand Meadow, MN do indeed require a ground survey, so I’ll do those in the next few weeks unless someone beats me to them. Hallock, MN (which is a bit too far for me up by Canada/North Dakota borders) is not on the google map either, but the survey page doesn’t show it as completed.

I did a complete virtual survey on Hallock. If you do the ground survey, go to where I indicate on the map, not to the curator’s residence. I spoke with him and he gave me the location.
I also did the survey on Grand Meadow (also a curator interview). It’s to the east of an unheated garage, as indicated.
We have nothing on Mora, and we could really use a survey of that one.

I did a quick drive through at the College Park,Md site coop id 181995 and it wasn’t at the coordinates. Also I looked it up at on the NCDC MMS and it closed 1996-04-01.

evanmjones– I would have done Mora for you months ago if I realized it was needed. The survey list page lists it as surveyed, and that’s what I was using to determine if anything around me was open (Anthony explained the oops that didn’t get corrected). Hallock does not show as surveyed on the master list. Apparently you guys have moved more to using the galleries as the master list rather than the master list. . .
Any rate, I’ll get Mora and Grand Meadow.

What I think happened was that there was once a survey for Mora but it turned out to be the wrong station so it was taken down. (Best as I can recall, anyway.)
Grand Meadow, like Hallock, has a virtual survey. Ground photos are best, though, so don’t let that stop you. Go to the gallery and you can get the precise location (also, the survey form should have exact coordinates).

For some of these sites, you can also use Google street view to get another pic or two.
Yes. Anthony, Gary, and I went through all the unsurveyed stations with a fine-toothed comb looking for those. We got quite a number of them and were able to do surveys on them.
But you have to be careful, sometimes a blurry bird feeder looks a lot like an MMTS!
GE is in a continual state of update, though, so I go through them every now and then looking for clearer images and street-level views.

Has anyone expressed any interest in that cluster of five sites (six if you count a ground survey of Hallock) in the Canada/North Dakota/Minnesota borders? If Mora and Grand Meadow go well (my first tries), I would consider an overnighter to get those if it seems likely no one else is going to step up for them this summer. I’ve never vistied that part of Minnesota, so it would be an adventure as well. Telling the wife that Don Quixote is strapping on the armor again will be the amusing part. “You’re going away for the weekend to do. . .what?”

ERROR! ERROR! ERROR!
IGNORE THIS SEE evanmjones (11:41:44) FOR CORRECT DIRECTIONS

The sewage treatment plant is to the south of town, on the southern side of Route 83. That may or may not be where the station is located.
Coordinates are 40.5095, -81.9141
HQ is in the middle of town on S. Clay St. (south of Jackson St.).
There’s also a suspicious-looking spot just west of town on Rt. 39 (noth side), just across the river, that has what looks like a big square green pool. That’s another possibility.

No, no GPS. Do you have addresses? If not, I will see what I can do about a GPS, well I will anyway.
DELAWARE, OH: No B-91 forms since 2001.
CADIZ, OH
HILLSBORO, OH
MCCONNELLSVILLE LOCK 7, OH
These are at residences, but I can’t get the addresses.
GREENVILLE WATER PLANT, OH
MILLERSBURG, OH
PORTSMOUTH-SCIOTOVILLE, OH
WAVERLY, OH
These are all WWTPs. I think I posted all the locations, except for Waverly.
Corrdinates for Waverly (39.11139, -82.97972) are accurate for that one. It’s on the very south end of town on Route 220, on the eastern side of the highway.

Evan–
Do you have a template of that survey form you can point at? .doc .rtf .xls or something like that?
The wife has given me permission to go on walkabout this weekend. I’ve got a Garmin Nuvi 650 GPS with the 2010 North America map.
I’m thinking Mora, MN (about 1.5 hrs north) on Friday evening (before dark, of course), and stay overnight somewhere in north central MN. Then Baudette, Roseau, Hallock (MN) and Pembina, ND on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Grand Forks University and Hillsboro, ND on the way home.
I’ll also have my laptop with the google earth .kml saved on it, but no live internet (other than evenings).
Any advice?

Virtual survey for Hallock:
http://gallery.surfacestations.org/main.php?g2_itemId=3903
For Grand Meadow:
http://gallery.surfacestations.org/main.php?g2_itemId=3901
Coordinates are on the maps and in the survey forms. If you meet ’em, give ’em my regards.
Baudette is unsurveyed:
MUNICIPAL POWER PLANT WITHIN AND 1 MILES NE OF PO AT BAUDETTE MN
Given coordinates are: 48.7094, -94.5869. What looks like the plant is a block east of the coordinates on the Southeast (not NE) edge of town (6 Ave. E). But there hasn’t been a B-91 filed since Aug. 2007, so it may not be there. Perhaps contacting City Hall for the number and calling ahead would be wise.
For Roseau, also unsurveyed, we have:
RADIO STATION KCAJ FM WITHIN AND 0.7 MI NW OF PO AT ROSEAU MN
Given coordinates are: 48.84861, -95.76750 east of Route 89 between 3rd St. NW and 4th St. NE. But those coordinates could be off. Also, no B-91 forms on file since Mar. 2007. I suggest calling ahead.
Mora. Unsurveyed:
SEWAGE PLANT OUTSIDE AND 0.8 MILES WSW OF PO AT MORA MN
Updated coordinates: 45.8775, -93.3148 appear accurate, on a cutoff south from W. Maple Ave. c. two thirds of a mile east of Jade St.
MMS indicates station is current.
Pembina. Unsurveyed.
CITY WATER PLANT WITHIN AND 4 CITY BLOCKS N OF PO AT PEMBINA ND
Coordinates 48.97110, -97.24160 appear to be accurate. NE corner of town.
B-91s current.
Grank Forks. Unsurveyed:
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WITHIN AND 2.6 MI NW OF PO AT GRAND FORKS ND
47.92167 -97.09806, SE corner of University Ave. and N 48th St. (Coordinates may or may not be correct.) No B-91s since Sept. 2006.
Hillsboro. Unsurveyed:
AMERICAN CRYSTAL SUGAR COMPANY OUTSIDE AND 2.7 MILES N OF PO AT HILLSBORO ND
Old Coordinates extremely crude: 47.4000, -97.0667
New coordinates are: 47.4389, -97.0664, which is an isolated, big industrial complex (that actually looks a lot like a wastewater treatment plant from above–at least there are what look like typical WWTP features, pools, tanks, etc.) on the east side of Route 200 about a mile and a half north of town.
MMS lists it as current.

Remember, if it’s a business or a municipal site, go there during business hours, before 4:00 PM. (Also, some of these outfits may have cut back to 4-day weeks.) They are bound to be fenced off.
If the site is no longer there, but you can manage to get an–exact–confirmed former location, we can use that. (And note on the form who confirmed it.)

Thanks, Evan. I’m thinking of taking a Little Giant ladder with me. Not to climb over any fences (I wouldn’t), but possibly to get me high enough above one to take a picture without the fence screwing up the photo. It’s going to be the weekend, so unless there’s a guard to sweet-talk what I find is likely to be what I find. I will not trespass, no worries about that. Tho I will make a couple calls tomorrow. I’ve got two 5mp cameras, one with 3x optical zoom and one with 5x optical zoom.

I see I never properly located MILLERSBURG, OH.

If I gave any other directions previously, PLEASE IGNORE THEM.

ROCKY MOUNT, VA
RADIO STATION WYTI WITHIN AND 1.5 MILES SW OF PO AT ROCKY MOUNT VA
Coordinates: 36.9769, -79.8961 seem fairly accurate (maybe a little too far south).
What appears to be the radio station is on Glenwood Dr., second building to the east, less than a tenth of a mile south from Brookshire Dr.

Good evening from Bemidji, MN.
Took pictures looking south and east at Mora today. The plant was closed and I was outside the fence, so that was the best I could do. Easy to spot at least. Still pretty good shots I think. Greetings from Grand Forks, ND, where the NWS got a giggle by ordering up a downpour and lightning while I took pictures behind their building. 🙂
Y’all will have to tell me what I saw at Pembina and NWS. I was prepared for MMTS, Stevenson screens and rain gauges. This was, uhh, a solar-powered milk can. Anthony probably has one behind his garage.
Got Baudette (in front of Police Dept building in the general vacinity), Hallock (big gorgeous lawn. . .and there it was up close to the building and shaded against the afternoon sun –only sunny pics I got today). Pembina, and Grand Forks today. Hillsboro tomorrow, hopefully.
Roseau was no joy, as Evan warned might be the case. But I have some pics and a story that may or may not be worth something. Back later after I eat and upload my pics.
I will do survey forms when I get back home.

Geo
June 27, 2009 8:28 pm

Okay, Baudette, Hallock, Pembina, and Grand Forks uploaded to gallery.
Now, my Roseau story. Evan suspected the site was gone. I got there, looked around, couldn’t find it, not even the radio station. Finally went across the street to the Holiday gas station/conveinence store. Showed the clerk my inkjet prints of a MMTS, Stevenson screen, and standard rain gauge. No recognition. Then I mentioned the radio station. Ah ha! Yes, the radio station moved two years ago. It is now two blocks north and three blocks west. But the building on the corner was where it used to be.
So I went back to that building. It was in three connected parts. Easternmost part now has a Culligan sign on it and looking in the windows they are storing Culligan supplies there. Middle part has a “space for rent” sign on the window. Westernmost part is an attached garage that I didn’t look in the window. Should have I guess. More interesting, adjacent to the garage on the west was a fenced in on two sides (but open to the front) grassy area. In that grassy area was the remanants of a concrete stand with rusted bolts in it. My imagination tells me that could be a rain gauge stand. Tho I suppose rain gauges aren’t the only things you put on concrete stands near garages.
Anyway, I have photos of that site if you want me to upload them. Then I went to the new site of the radio station, but no one was there. I have pictures around there too, but there’s no suitable spot for a climate station. Unless it is on the roof. I saw some dishes up there, but couldn’t see well enough to say if a climate station might be up there or not. I suppose we could call the radio station and see if we can get them to confirm the old site and if the MMTS was adjacent to the concrete stand I found. Let me know if you want the potential “old site” pics uploaded.
REPLY: In my experience, rain gauges aren’t often with the MMTS, the rain gauges can be placed anywhere for best wind considerations, but the MMTS has cable trenching issues. I’ll do some research and advise. Thanks for your efforts! – Anthony

I’ll have to go back thru all my Pembina pictures and see if maybe I caught it accidentally. I don’t think so tho. Behind the building maybe. All the electronics, doors, and stickers on the other thing (plus ignorance) bit me.
Anyway, I’m home again. No Grand Meadow this trip, as it is significantly in the opposite direction of the others from my starting point. I’ll go down there later in the summer if no one else does.
I have pics of Hillsboro, ND to upload. Security guard called her boss and got permission. Also got a short interview with her, tho she’s not the main climate station person there. Stevenson screen, but no MMTS (she was quite firm on that). She also said the thermometer in the shelter developed “a bubble” some (indefinite) time ago and they requested a new one but one was not forthcoming. So they went out and got an indoor/outdoor wireless thermometer and placed the outdoor sensor in the shelter “about six months ago” (i.e. dead of North Dakota winter) and read it from the security post nearby on an hourly basis and use that to report.
She showed me the sheet/clipboard where they note the temps, and the hand unit for the readout. No model number on it, but said “LaCrosse Technology” on the bottom of the face. I know the typical home market indoor/outdoor wireless units are not very good for cold climates, at least in part because batteries don’t like cold. I have not tried to look for specs on the LaCrosse unit yet –maybe there are commercial grade indoor/outdoor ones that are more hardy.
Anyway, off to cut the grass at home. I’ll upload Hillsboro this evening.

Garmin Nuvi 265WT
Garmin’s nüvi 265WT improves upon its 200-series predecessors by adding free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) as well as Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone. Other significant improvements in the 2×5 series include a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265WT provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. “turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way”, rather than merely “turn left in 50 feet”).
