Monckton not allowed to debate with Gore today

23 04 2009

SEE UPDATE BELOW FROM MONCKTON

I’m out of the political loop, and have no way of judging the merit of the claim, so I’m just going to link to this story. If it is true, it shows just how bad the treatment of different viewpoints has become in Washington. Perhaps Lord Monckton can give a comment or two here to either bolster or refute this story.

A possible correlation between the Southern Oscillation Index and the Solar Ap Index

23 04 2009

I was pointed to this graph by an email from WUWT reader Phil Ravenscroft and I’m reposting it here for discussion.

While the correlation looks plausible, it seems almost too good. Since the email tip for this graph did not include the source data files, I was ready to dismiss it.

UPDATE: my first impression was the correct one – see comments

But in doing my own research, I found myself being led back to late John Daly and his references to Theodor Landscheidt in this page. While I don’t put much stock in Landscheidt’s barycentric theories, I’ve never known John Daly to pursue a wild hare. Looking further, in the peer reviewed literature, there is this paper:

The Left Hand Knows Not What The Right Hand is Doing

23 04 2009

Guest Post by Steven Goddard

confusion
Last weeks’ top Antarctic AGW story was :

Antarctic ice melting faster than expected

due to CO2, of course.

This week the #1 story is :

Antarctic ice spreading

but the increase in size is due to “stratospheric ozone depletion” which is of course also caused by man-made gases.

So Antarctic ice is disappearing faster than expected due to man, and it is also expanding in size due to man.  Meanwhile, the early autumn temperature in Vostok, Antarctica is a toasty -95F, a nice warm up from the -104F temperatures earlier this week.

Oh, and one minor problem with the ozone hole theory  ”The ozone hole occurs during the Antarctic spring, from September to early December” – but the positive ice anomaly occurred during the autumn and winter (March through July) as represented by the red line below.   Read the rest of this entry »

Catlin Arctic Ice Survey: paid advertising of results before they are even off the ice!

23 04 2009

Sharp eyed WUWT reader Rick K spotted this advertisement on Yahoo News:

I double checked what Rick K reported, and yes, they are running this ad. Either they just don’t care that they are running ads for “results” prior to any hard data being published or this is some sort of advertising scheduling slipup. Given how sloppy this laughable facade of a scientific expedition has been so far, publishing “live” biometric readings that were actually 30 days old, I’m guessing the latter.

Readers, feel free to witness this yourself, double check the experience. Here is the URL:

You may have to refresh a few times since ads in the spot rotate. Here is the full sized advertisement: Read the rest of this entry »
