Hansen's Coal and Global Warming protest may get snowed out

Many WUWT readers have heard about this:

dc_protest4cast_hourly-520

By the time Partly Cloudy skies appear about 3PM Monday, there will be about 4-8″ of snow on the ground in DC.

Plus, in New York City, where Jim Hansen would likely depart from, they also have a Winter Storm Warning in effect to 6PM Monday with forecast of:

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST MONDAY

Includes the Counties: Hudson, New York (Manhattan), Bronx, Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn), Queens Tonight…Snow developing this evening…Heavy at Times. Snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches. Windy with lows in the mid 20s. North winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

Monday…Snow in the morning…Then snow likely in the afternoon. Snow May be heavy at Times in the morning. Total snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches. Windy. Near steady temperature in the mid 20s. North winds 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

If Hansen hasn’t left NYC already, I’d say it is doubtful he’ll even make the protest given it is a Monday, and Monday’s are usually pretty bad commutes even without bad weather. Looks like it is going to be a…

More on the DC weather story form Justin Berk, Baltimore Weather Examiner

I interrupt the snowstorm updates to bring you this pressing issue.  Monday, March 2nd 2009 is the date for a scheduled protest by Capitol Climate Action (CCA).

Heavy snow expected at the Nation’s Capitol on Monday

Their website labels it:

Mass civil disobedience at the coal fired power plant in Washington, DC

CCA claims this will be the largest mass civil disobedience for the climate in US history.  There is actually a request to wear dress clothes.  That seems odd.  Is this a target to get young Americans in a vogue protest?

My forecast from this morning can be found here (I will have a new update by this evening). If you go just by the NWS forecast, then snow will range between 5-10 inches with wind gusts over 30 mph.  The snowstorm forecast is ironic not only because it falls on the date of this protest, but also because it is a late season event.  The normal high for the date in Washington, DC is 51F. What would be worse: Keep the protest on in the snowstorm, or cancel it because of the snowstorm?

The infamous Dr. James Hansen should be there leading the charge.  My post last week about 2008 being the coldest year this decade included a reference to Hansen.  I wrote, “This is the same man who turned off the air conditioning in the Capitol while speaking about Global Warming on a hot day in 1988.”  I also mentioned his exposure of bad data for Russia just this past October.  He used September data (a statistically warmer month) in place of cooler October data.  This skewed the temperatures upward.

I don’t knock him for his extreme beliefs, but I do disagree with the questionable tactics he uses to get his message across.  According to  Fox News , he is in hot water since he works for NASA, yet is helping to organize a protest.

It seems like the Climate Crew has had some trouble getting their messages across.  It’s almost as if mixed signals are coordinated by nature itself. Marc Marano,  Communications Director for the GOP on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) sent out a list of events that seem to follow the Gore Effect.  This was labeled by Politico.com as:

The so-called Gore Effect happens when a global warming-related event, or appearance by the former vice president and climate change crusader, Al Gore, is marked by exceedingly cold weather or unseasonably winter weather.

Check out this list courtesy of Marc Marano:

Note: The “Gore Effect” has a long and storied history. What follows is a sampling of how Mother Nature enjoys mocking global warming fear promoters.

5) Gore decries ‘global warming’ in bitterly cold NYC – December 2006

6) Gore delivers environmental message at Harvard – …with near 125-year record breaking low temps – October 2008

7) Global warming activists urged to focus on Earth Day rallies and ignore snow as it ‘piles up outside our windows’ – April 17, 2007

8) No Joke! Cyclists ‘braved freezing cold temps’ to promote global warming awareness in New York – October 22, 2008

9) Global warming protest in Maryland frosted with snow – January 2008

It’s always going to be lose/lose to you people. If these events are held during the colder months, idiots will crow as if it’s somehow “ironic”. If they are held during warmer months, the same idiots will complain that it’s unfair staging (e.g. the 1988 testimony).

Somebody up there has a sense of humour.
The Institut in Paris, France, then second only to the Royal Society in prestige amongst natural philosophers, decided in 1815 after prolonged and furious debate that the idea that stones could fall from the sky was quite absurd.
Three months later a shower of meteorites fell just outside Paris to the wonder of all.

I am waiting for the cognitive dissonance to kick in and for them to claim that colder temperatures and more snow are proof of warming. And the fact that global temperatures have been falling for the past 10 years to be another indication of global warming.
It is fascinating. I never believed that so many people could be so gullible. Fooling all of the people isn’t required. You only need to fool enough to get elected. I fear we are fast becoming an idiocracy.

“It’s weather. It happens.”
I see the beginnings of a glimmer of understanding, in that statement. See if you can apply your epiphany to warm spells, as well.
What amuses me is that I sat through debates back in the 70’s where the greenies wanted to take the yet to be completed South Texas Nuclear Project and convert it to COAL. It would have been ludicrously impractical, of course.
I’d be willing to bet some of those same greenzillas are in the crowd around Hanssen, spitting hate toward their once-loved coal.

I been blogging this over at DailyKos to a rather hostile reception.
I started last Thursday saying that if the trough deepened, they might get a big snow event.
I gotta confess, I don’t share some of the political inclinations of those who comment here; however, I believe that Hansen really went beyond the pale in comparing people who advocate continued use of coal to Nazi mass murderers and coal-fired generators to Auschwitz crematoria. It shows how desperate and intolerant he is.
So I am absolutely delighted to see him freeze his tush off tomorrow. And all those who chose to defend him and his vulgar assertions are equally subject to ridicule.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

As a “you people”, assuming that means me a reader of WUWT, is the Idiot? Only an idiot would hold a Global Warming Protest in a Blizzard.
There are several even temperature months ahead that all would work well to stage such a protest and not risk lives by filling the snow slicked streets and hiways with un-necessary vehicles driving, left running, etc to rally against CO2 emissions. Which is your right and one I completely support, but I have a right to laugh hysterically at the lunacy you engage in and I find it amusing you would lash out at such a “compromised” time.
I realize that “Social Responsibility” is a theme of the day. Where was the organizers sense of that when this weather was widely reported as coming since late last week? Where I live we call it prudence to re-schedule outside events in response to weather reports.
All I can say is “good luck with that”

Too bad D.C. cannot experience what we had here in far northern ND last Friday morning: 25 degrees BELOW zero F; with a bit of a breeze. Chill factor somewhere around 35-40 degrees below zero.
People from ”down south” who think the 20s above zero is cold have NO IDEA what really cold weather feels like. I looked for Al Gore and AGW REAL hard this winter; especially on the day in January where my outdoor sensors were reporting 41.6 degrees below zero (and that is WITHOUT chill factor).

I’m one that thinks God is sending a message, not laughing. Oxfam estimated that 30 million more people starved last year due to our diversion of food to fuel. Rain forests with diverse flora and fauna are being cut down to make alcohol from surgar cane or biofuels from palm oil. The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico doubled as we expanded corn production for ethanol as fuel… could that be due to run off from fertilizer used in corn cultivation? Just as there are unwanted side effects from burning fossile fuels, there are unwanted side effects from renewables. Anyone want to argue about which is more imediate and severe?

Ridicule may well be the most powerful weapon we have against the Warming Religion.
A, and perhaps THE, key attraction of any religion is the belief you have access to important information, particularly information about future events that others don’t have.
This ‘knowledge’ gives believers a sense of superiority, as well as making them feel they have control over their and others future. BTW, you frequently see this attitude of ‘I know and you don’t’ in this and forums.
Ridicule will often undermine the believers sense of certainty about the future in ways that facts and logic never will. That’s because they didn’t arrive at their belief through facts and logic. So facts and logic don’t sway them.

Reality Bites Delusion:
First, global cooling greets demonstrators, then this:
Capitol power plant dims clean energy hopes
AP – Monday, March 2
WASHINGTON – As Congress tries to clean up the nation’s energy sources and cut gases blamed for global warming, it is struggling to do so in its own backyard.
The Capitol Power Plant, a 99-year-old facility that heats and cools the hallowed halls of Congress, still burns coal and accounts for one-third of the legislative branch’s greenhouse gas emissions. For a decade, lawmakers have attempted to clean it up.
But Congress is running out of options to make the plant fully green. Also, there are questions about whether it can afford to keep paying to use the extra natural gas, which burns cleaner than coal.
The plant’s story is one that is likely to play out across the United States as Congress looks to limit greenhouse gases and require more of the country’s energy to come from wind, solar and other renewable sources.
So if Congress cannot act locally, as the environmental slogan goes, how can it begin to think globally?

I try my best to believe James Hansen genuinely believes in what he does (even though I think he has lost the plot). I hope he chooses to prove to the world that he’s not just a cynic ruthlessly exploiting the global warming game for personal benefit, for fame and fortune.
What would prove it me that he really is a believer is if he leads the parade wearing Bermuda shorts and a Hawaiian Shirt and sandals, and carrying a pool floaty (for that pesky rising sea level). Oh, and don’t forget the hat to keep off the beating sun.
Just as the Forth Crusade leaders believed God would protect them from the rising Nile floodwaters, Hansen needs to have faith that catastrophic global warming will prevail over finicky winter weather. After all, as we all know, the prevailing climate is very static and easily predicted, so he has no reason not to stick with Plan A.
On the other hand, as the Crusaders in the Nile Delta found to their detriment, while absolute faith may be a wonderful thing, it’s a good idea to throw in some commonsense as well!

The heating degree days for Washington, DC shows that the winter season ’08-’09 thus far is 23 percent colder compared to last year, and 3.6 percent colder than the 30-year average. And that data is a week old, so of course does not include this current storm. It will be worse when the data comes out in a week or so.
Maybe Hansen should pick a year to protest when it is actually warmer than usual?

Thingsbreak wrote: “Nothing is going to satisfy people who believe 7 mutually contradictory things about climate change.”
What could this sentence mean?
Let’s look at some IPCC “contradictions” (areas where the observed facts contradict the IPCC claims):
Contradiction #1:
IPCC projects global warming at a rate of 0.2C per decade in the early 21st century; so far the first 8 years of the 21st century have shown cooling at an average rate of around 0.1C per decade. Oops!
Contradiction #2:
IPCC states that the rate of sea level rise has increased in the latter part of the 20th century, switching from tide gauge records to satellite altimetry; the tide gauge record shows a slight decrease in sea level rise in the second half of the 20th century, as comapred to the first half. Hmm…
Contradiction #3:
IPCC states that changes in solar irradiance since 1750 are estimated to cause a radiative forcing of only 0.12 W/m^2, equivalent to a net warming of around 0.02C; several studies by solar scientists conclude that the 20th century warming caused by the unusually high level of solar activity is around 0.35C. Ouch!
Contradiction #4:
IPCC states that the warmth of the last half century is unusual in at least the previous 1,300 years, ignoring overwhelming physical and historical evidence of a warmer global Medieval Warm Period. Huh?
Contradiction #5:
IPCC claims that the satellite temperature record has shown a faster rate of tropospheric warming than that at the surface, confirming the anthropogenic cause of warming; both the satellite and radiosonde record show less warming than the surface record. Oops!
Contradiction #6:
IPCC models all assume a strongly positive feedback from clouds with warming, resulting in 1.3C of the total assumed 2xCO2 climate sensitivity of 3.2C; actual physical observations show a strongly negative net feedback from clouds of around the same order of magnitude; correcting the 2xCO2 climate sensitivity for this factor brings it to around 0.6 to 0.8C, rather than 3.2C. Ouch!
Contradiction #7:
IPCC staes confidently that the upward distortion of the surface temperature record due to the urban heat island effect has a negligible influence of less than 0.006C per decade; many studies from all over the world show that the UHI influence is thirty to fifty times as great as claimed by IPCC. Oh, oh!
There are many more, but I’ll just list these seven to start with…

Let’s be clear. The reason there are so many people who are willing followers and participants in this AGW crusade is that global warming is the perfect massive vehicle in which to advocate, promote and fund many liberal causes.
Here in Oregon there is essentially a 100% support from every elected and activist Democrats and other liberals. You can’t find a single one not completely convinced and on board.
Everything, including smart growth, rail transit, taxes, energy, Dams, property rights, ocean dead zones, forest practices on and and on has hitched it’s cause to the AGW train, for years now.
We have a local commissioner who tried to include a “health and environmental justice” mandate into a bridge design to make sure it complies with CO2 reduction objectives.
And limited only by their imaginations, they are piling on more every day
with new observation attributed to AGW .
So much so that’s it’s now impossible for them to ever face reality and risk a backlash against their many causes.
Yet when any skeptic happens to point to some impressive cold and snow as a bit curious these same attributers-of-all-things-to-global warming quickly lecture about how wrong it is to make any connection.
“Weather is not climate” comes from the same alarmists who have cited Hurricane Katrina as evidence of Global Warming.
The AGW crusade has become a massive coalescing of all things left wing.
Therefore it no longer matters if AGW itself goes missing.

Nope- It’s not just you – Recent PRS (peer reviewed studies- myself and a few of me like-minded mates-that seems to be sufficient these days!) prove, beyond any need of debate, that an alarmist SOH (sense of humour) is inversely proportional to the sum of empirical evidence that concludes AGW is actually NAPWGUA (Not A Problem Worth Getting Upset About)
Scientifically and statistically, however, the most significant finding that my team and I have made is of the 94% correlation with the decibel levels of increasingly, ear-piercing, hysterical, ad-hominem attacks made by the warmist community on anyone who dares to question CCD (Current Climate Dogma) and the failure of computerised climate models to predict – er- JAE (just about everything)

Bill McClure (15:36:08) : I guess this explains why so many posts sound the same same guy differnt ID ?
I noticed some of the same pattern. Posts that look like one guy trying to be two or three. It is far harder to hide choices of diction and style that folks would think. It’s almost as good as a fingerprint. ( I sometimes call them ‘mind prints’ though folks that frequently spend a lot of time together start to ‘sound’ alike. )
You also find a similar pattern of matches among the “Single female first name only, male-poser posting & language style, strong attitude vis AGW, only around for a week” set. I suspect someone, male, posing as a female to work the discrimination / guilt angle. But they get nowhere. I think the fact that everyone here is treated equally kind of spikes that attempt.
Skeptics don’t care who you are, they care what quality of thinking you have.
There is also a set that is either one person doing their own softball set-ups or two folks working together. Hard to tell without the forensic data, but the detail doesn’t really matter. What I find interesting is that none of those fingerprints happen on the skeptic IDs. Now it could just be that the skeptics are more comfortable, so feel no need; but I’m more inclined to think it is a more ‘formal’ attempt to corrupt or deflect the topic. The structure of the “softball deflected topic – skeptic reply – hardball 2nd poster push to hijack” keeps repeating. The “softball deflect” ID mutates every week or so, the hardball IDs are “the regular team”.
I don’t really care ( I find the process sharpens my skills, both in observation and in debate; so it helps me more than annoys ) but do enjoy watching the psychological aspects of it. Never really understood why some folks felt the need to practice from the side of deception.
(Other than in times of war. I have a wonderful book about the Camofleurs of WWII that is a marvel. On one occasion a few guys in sound trucks with inflatable tanks held off and then scared off an entire German army! I think it is:
http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Soldiers-Story-Heroic-Deception/dp/0525946640
)
Please note: This is not about the use of pseudonyms per se, it’s about what you do with them. I fully understand the risks of too much trackable data in public… I was a target for several decades as a security person.

Hansen appears to be totally clueless and not at all informed.
From Wiki:
“On February 28, 2009, Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent a letter to the Architect of the Capitol asking him to create a plan to switch the power plant entirely to natural gas by the end of 2009. This letter came just three days before the scheduled protest, which organizers said would happen anyway.”
(In the midst of a late season snowstorm…roflmao)

Glad to see the AGW hypothesis being falsified on many levels. However, I’m all for reducing pollution and toxins in our environment, which are the cause of many ills. The problem is that climate change is not caused by those things, so when AGW is thoroughly discredited, soon, in the eyes of the public it could discredit as well, the generally good idea of being more environmentally responsible.
Ultimately, people like Hansen and Gore are detrimental to the overall issue of cleaning up our messes.

In his testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives two years ago, James E. Hansen invoked the specter of an imminent man-made climate disaster for the environment, human civilization and the planet itself, predicting that “the Earth is close to dangerous climate change, to tipping points of the system with the potential for irreversible deleterious effects”.
In his testimony Hansen stated that the greatest threat to humanity is the likely demise of the West Antarctic ice sheet, concluding that “sea level rise this century may be measured in meters if we follow business-as-usual fossil fuel emissions.”
The most absurd part of Hansen’s testimony was:
“The dangerous level of CO2 is at most 450 ppm, and it is probably less.”
This statement is pure, unsubstantiated hyperbole without any scientific support. Today’s CO2 level, as measured at Mauna Loa, is 385 ppm by volume. The greenhouse hypothesis tells us that an increase to 450 ppm would result in a theoretical increase of global average temperature of 0.16 degrees C. This is much less of an increase than we experience in daily temperature swings, without reaching any “tipping point”.
In the past, Hansen has whined about being “muzzled” for his views, but he generates articles and other doomsday rhetoric on AGW at an alarming rate, including his latest “death train” rant.
Hansen is a US Government employee, paid by taxpayer money to provide a transparent and unbiased temperature record to the U.S. public, rather than moving away from his area of expertise and getting into politics and policy issues, much less making morality statements or getting involved in “mass civil disobedience” protests.
It’s hard to imagine that he is stupid enough not to realize how utterly absurd a “global warming protest” being held in a snowstorm looks to the world.
Hansen’s “tipping point” might best be described by the analogy of a dump truck loaded with manure. As the bed of the truck is tilted, at first nothing happens. Then a critical “tipping point” is reached, and the whole load of manure comes rushing out of the truck.
We are being inundated, not by the 6-meter waves from the breakup of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, but from the manure from Hansen’s dump truck.

Whenever any proposed law dealing with AGW or premised upon that hypothesis is under consideration, opposition based upon violation of the establishment clause is appropriate. The absence of scientific proof indicates that AGW is based upon a belief system. Therefor, enactment of any such law involves the establishment of a religion.

Their conclusion agrees with the data I’ve been tracking on heating degree days across the U.S. For January 2009, the total HDD were only 1.4 percent less than the 30 year average (1971 – 2000).
What NOAA did NOT say, though, is that January 2009 was 7.6 percent colder than January 2008, as measured by HDD for the U.S. As we have come to expect, they appear to be reporting only the information that supports their agenda.
NOAA’s headline could just as easily have been: “Contiguous U.S. January 2009 Colder than Last Year by Almost 8 Percent.”

Hansen’s ahead of us on this one; by calling this anthropogenic climate change instead of warming. Now all weather is proof that he is correct, apparently. Just don’t ask him what would disprove anthropogenic climate change. I wonder if he’s ever seriously asked himself?
What a joke this is all becoming. It’s too bad the greens will have their way for two to four years but I really do predict they are screwing themselves afterwards. If we end up getting some realistic clean energy technology out of the deal then there’s a silver lining; I just hope we don’t hamstring ourselves trying to implement what doesn’t nearly work yet.

Excerpt: NASA’s chief climate scientist is in hot water with colleagues and at least one lawmaker after calling on citizens to engage in civil disobedience at what is being billed as the largest public protest of global warming ever in the United States. In a video on capitolclimateaction.org, Dr. James Hansen is seen urging Americans to “take a stand on global warming” during the March 2 protest at the Capitol Power Plant in Southeast Washington, D.C. “We need to send a message to Congress and the president that we want them to take the actions that are needed to preserve climate for young people and future generations and all life on the planet,” says Hansen, who has likened coal-fired power plants to “factories of death” and claims he was muzzled by the Bush administration when he warned of drastic climate changes. […] But critics say Hansen’s latest call to action blurs the line between astronomer and activist and may violate the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from participating in partisan political activity. “Oh my goodness,” one of Hansen’s former supervisors, Dr. John Theon, told FOXNews.com when informed of the video. “I’m not surprised … The fact that Jim Hansen has gone off the deep end here is sad because he’s a good fellow.” “Why he has not been fired I do not understand,” Theon said.

OT: Science News for 28Feb09 has a lengthy piece on the threat of ‘global warming’ to the islands of The Maldives in the Pacific. While admitting that estimates of sea-level rise are many and varied, like so many articles on the presumed consequences of AGW, this one assumes the self-evident truth of AGW, and is unafraid to confuse ‘weather’ with ‘climate’:
“. . . experts believe that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may already be making a worldwide environmental impact, contributing to more severe storms, drought, fire and ocean warming.”
and is unabashedly alarmist:
“R.K. Pachauri, who chairs the Nobel Prize–winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, warned in December at a United Nations climate conference in Poznan, Poland, that inaction would allow continuing and unabated rises in air and ocean temperatures that could lead to an ‘abrupt and irreversible change’ in the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets — and, as a result, a possible sea level rise of several meters.”
The author, “Cristine Russell is a freelance science writer and senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School.” She concludes,
“Growing greenhouse gas emissions may threaten the future of these irreplaceable environmental treasures, as well as that of other tropical atolls. Their fates hang on whether the international community has the political will to push through tough climate controls and, if so, whether these actions will be sufficient to save vulnerable low-lying islands and coastal areas from encroaching ocean waters.”
thus turning an ostensibly ‘objective’ piece into a piece of political propaganda.
Here’s the link: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/feature/id/40789/title/First_wave
Did I read somewhere that the problem is not that the sea is rising, but that these islands are sinking? In any event, the article is a good illustration of how even the ‘science press’ have fallen hook, line, and sinker for the AGW litany, never questioning the underlying hypotheses.
Might be good for a full post by Anthony. Perhaps some of the bona fide scientists here might see fit to let Science News know how far they have strayed from objectivity.
Apologies for the interruption. Now back to your regularly-scheduled discussion. Remember, an ‘extreme weather event’ like a blizzard in Washington D.C. on March 2nd is only ‘weather’, not ‘climate’.

“Boston (MA) – Scientists at MIT have recorded a nearly simultaneous world-wide increase in methane levels. This is the first increase in ten years, and what baffles science is that this data contradicts theories stating man is the primary source of increase for this greenhouse gas. It takes about one full year for gases generated in the highly industrial northern hemisphere to cycle through and reach the southern hemisphere. However, since all worldwide levels rose simultaneously throughout the same year, it is now believed this may be part of a natural cycle in mother nature – and not the direct result of man’s contributions.
Yep, the science is “settled” all right.

AnonyMoose,
You are not correct with tour statement that all islands erode.
For example, Coral Islands keep on growing.
There are also many sea islands that grow because the sea and the wind wash huge amounts of sand at the beaches.
In the “East Sea” coastlines and islands are rising at a rate of 1 cm per year in response to the melted icecaps from the latest glaciation.
Than we have volcanic islands where erosion does not get a chance because a continuous flow of lava.
In regard to the Maldives you are 100% correct.
The sea level is fairly constant due to ocean temperatures and precipitation.
The only danger to the Maldives is a Tsunami.
If the President and his population plan to evacuate the Islands we’ll have a nice opportunity to buy some nice sea resorts for little money.

Those young people are smarter than Gore gives them credit for: They know what keeps them from becoming Popsicles in the Winter and Baked Potatoes in the Summer. We can’t all afford a luxury mansion with millions in solar panels installed.
The young kids of today don’t have it so good, and they get what will happen if the power goes out.

A little empathy for the fertile young minds that will be gathering tomorrow if there is a major winter event.
Cognitive dissonance:
“The tension of dissonance motivates us to change either our behavior or our belief in order to avoid a distressing feeling. The more important the issue and the greater the discrepancy between behavior and belief the higher the magnitude of dissonance we will feel.” http://www.afirstlook.com/docs/cogdiss.pdf

As a cold and snowy WEATHER event in D.C. coincides with this funny protest, I predict that little of the endeavors by Capitol Climate Action and similar AGW believers will be publicized in the media at this time – purposely ignored because it does not conduce any fear. Come Spring or Summer when the Alarmists stage a similar event during a warm day; the headlines of the typical media sources will trumpet: “ Warm day confirms that the CLIMATE is changing and the actions of these AGW people are clearly justified..”…. or something similar…

Mike Bryant (20:08:46) : I agree that humor, with truth, and a very light hint of ridicule, is a potent weapon against pompous bullies. It’s pretty difficult to preach and coerce when your audience is laughing at you.
More and more people are starting to realize that the emperor is as naked as a jaybird. When the laughter begins, the end of the deception will be at hand.

Oh, so true! I’ve taken to making sarcastic remarks per AGW to random folks on cold days to gauge the general public response to AGW. For example, today, going to the grocery store (cold, blustery, sporadic rain). Muttered to an old guy as we both headed for the doorway “Any more global warming like this and I’m going to be frozen and drowned”. He just smiled.
I have yet to have a single person respond in support of AGW…
I recommend the exercise. You ought to be pleasantly surprised at the degree of skepticism that is hiding under the public veneer.
I’ve also used “If this kind of Global Warming keeps up, I’m going to need a better coat!” and “I don’t think I can take any more global warming like this – maybe I need to move somewhere warmer…” and “If this is Global Warming, then I don’t want to see what cooling is like!” You get the idea…

The idea of disrupting power production during cold temperatures seems extremely dangerous to me.
Here in the UK, we hear plenty of horror stories about the elderly freezing to death because they can’t afford the cost of electricity, let alone because of the supply of it, and we have generally mild weather!
I’m sure there are plenty of contingencies in place and supply won’t be effected, even if their blockade is successful, but the sheer callousness and perverseness of this action is pretty shocking.
It seems they have a moral choice to make, abandon at least the civil disobedience part, and admit energy supply is more important than their “moral” crusade, or give yet more proof that there is nothing moral about their crusade in the first place.

Thank you for the kind words. I have a couple of different ‘styles’. The one you see here most is the ‘low jargon explainer’. But there are times that ‘full on tech’ is needed; mostly of talking to other techs and programmers.
The GIStemp series of articles is directed at the other computer programmers of the world (or code-hacker wannabees) who just can’t work up the effort it takes to slog through GIStemp cold. It’s a helping hand. A packed trail they can slide their skis down with less effort.
It also puts pointers in for where I smell something funny, so other folks with programming skill can put focus on that bit, without the need to dig through a few dozen pages to discover it.
And frankly, I’m hoping someone else will hop on it too. The process is a bit draining all by myself. Especially when I hit the next bit. It is written in a language called “Python” that I can sort of figure out, maybe, I think.
At any rate, I’ll be adding other non-tech style pages, so there are things that are not so hard to slog through. For example:
http://chiefio.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/so_many_thermometers_so_little_time/
basically is a map of the age distribution of thermometers with a comment about how it looks hard to me to get realistic trends longer than about 70 years out of that map. (A great topic for an Anthony article. HINT HINT! ) Also the huge density in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world ‘puts the lie’ to Hansens claim that manipulations of the US data are not going to influence the global average much.
And in:
http://chiefio.wordpress.com/2009/02/25/china-where-coal-turns-to-money/
I compare two graphs. One of Chinese income growth, the other a map of who produces how much coal. It’s not a coincidence.
There will be others like this. Short. Pithy. Non-technobabble 😉

[…] They are just names and if you notice a lot of them have no career, daryl hannah, mike farrell.
I don’t know if unemployed actors do this to get in the papers, or if being an over the top advocate kills careers (due to public rejection) but there is some kind of correlation.
a little more research and you will see some of the organisations are linked. different name same organisation essentially. CoalSwarm and the Center for Media and Democracy, for example they share the same wiki. are they individuals or seperates..
Yeah, I’ve noticed that the Loony Left does a great job of marketing. Lots of names, lots of big sounding organization. Lots of glitz and star darlings. But actual turnout is usually low. Over representation of liberal arts types, I think.
The Radical Right doesn’t do that nearly so well; yet when Something Needs Doing a large groundswell just happens. More farmers, cooks, builders, cops, shovel jockeys, drivers… ‘doers’ of all sorts (military guys and gals especially – none of use could sleep at night but for them…).
As my Texas Uncle would say “Them Lefties, they are all hat and no cattle”. Not a guy to cross (was a guard/staff at a prison for most of his career…) but if you ever need anything, he’s there with it before you realized you needed it and nothing needs to be said. “No sense sayin’ when you need to be doin’ ” and “You gonna flap your lips all day or we gonna get this done?”
Me being from the Left Coast he has his ‘concerns’ about me 8-0 but we get along rather well. (I just don’t discuss my opinions on Certain Things…) It’s hell being from the middle of the bird… both sides want to toss rocks at you 😉

I live in Herndon/Reston which is about 35 miles west of DC. At 0929 the snow is just now letting up and the weather radar shows the tail end of the storm is about to pass through Fairfax county. We were supposed to get only about three inches according to the NWS but the storm tracked a bit more to the west so I have about 8 inches.
Downtown DC is practically paralyzed since they have even more snow. The Metro rail system is having problems with snow on the tracks forcing plowing which leads to single-tracking. All of the schools are closed in the surrounding area and it is 28 F with the wind picking up. Tonight is expected to be the lowest temperature ever recorded for this date. Around 15F. Don’t you just love it.
Now I am off to do some snow blowing so I can get to work myself.

I’m in Atlanta for the past weekend to attend US Mensa’s Annual Colloquium. This year the subject was climate change, and Jim Hansen was the keynote speaker Saturday night. See http://colloq09.us.mensa.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Program7 for all the other speakers – all AGW supporters. I attended mainly out of a sense of duty – I didn’t want Hansen to recruit into his fold a bunch of bright but not all that well informed folks.
His talk was much lower key than I expected. I think he was exhausted, having arrived only half an hour or so before the dinner started, but he never mentioned death trains. I was going to ask if GISS would ever change their data backfilling code to not change decades old reports, but he never got into that arena. There were only one or two other skeptics there, so I figured instead of standing out like a sore thumb and sore loser, I’d let my web pages do the talking, I had several copies to pass out.
Hansen was supposed to speak at the panel discuss Sunday morning, but left early to catch a flight, I assume to Washington, not NYC. There’s a good chance he made it, as the rain changed to snow around 1130 while I was on the train to ATL.
The flight I was booked had been canceled already, the flight I moved to got canceled. There were no other ways to get to NH that day, so I settled for Boston, and that flight got canceled, so I’m at the Westin Airport hotel paying $13 for internet access for the next 24 hours, but it turns out I have to change hotels tonight (there were no available seats for today, but I figured that was no loss.
It’s amazing what 1″ of snow does here – TLS biggest problem is there’s no way they can keep up with the deicing demand.
I’ll have more to say about the colloquium, but have no idea when I’ll have time for it. When I get home, (I think I’ll have to get a bus from BOS to Manchester, and a cab to Lot C at MHT, and then have a foot of snow on the car to deal with), I’m going to have more snow to deal with, work that has piled up, a bill due on Mar 5, etc. Sigh.
At least Heidi Cullen made it home, she lives here.
I thought the GFS models were claiming more cold than the NWS forecast was claiming.
REPLY: Hang in there Ric. Consider this maxim “Snow makes people stupid”. Watch the antics of people in 1″ of snow in ATL and you’ll understand. – Anthony

“Pertinent questions:
Who is funding this demonstration? Soros? Gore with his cap and trade bounty to come?
It smells of government organization, since it is pushing Obama’s program.
Or are they maybe afraid Obama will put the climate on the back burner because of the economy problems and want to give an extra push? 2500 demonstrators are a gnat on an elephant’s ear.”
Anna,

I was looking forward to that, but it took AirTran three hours to find my luggage, so I didn’t make it to the hotel until after midnight.
I did deduce that Atlantans don’t keep snow brushes in their cars. Some of the cars leaving the airport parking lot had used just windshield wipers. (Heavy snow often breaks them, bad move in general.) I generally have one brush and one ice scraper, but use a sweep broom at home for decent snowfalls. for driveway, step, and deck work I have snow blower, snow push scraper (to get what the snow blower misses), plastic scraper (for deck), coal shovel-like thing for digging out blocks of deep snow and under cars, and an ice scraper to deal with ice storms.
In northern New England, that’s considered a normal collection.

Too many people is supposed to be the real problem with the world, isn’t it? Maybe we’ve discovered the real reason for the enthusiasm for biofuels — starving the world’s poor to death and thus reducing the stress on the environment from overpopulation?

Somewhat OT, but others here have questioned the funding for this event. Steven “junkScience” Milloy has an article posted on Fox
http://foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/2009/03/01/milloy_soros_coal/
which inspired me to to do a little digging. Dr. Hansen does seem to have benefitted from the efforts of Soros money as excerpts from the Soros Foundations Network Report 2006 indicate:
Scientist Protests NASA’s Censorship Attempts
James E. Hansen, the director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA, protested attempts to silence him after officials at NASA ordered him to refer press inquiries to the public affairs office and required the presence of a public affairs representative at any interview. The Government Accountability Project, a whistleblower protection organization and OSI grantee, came to Hansen’s defense by providing legal and media advice. The campaign on Hansen’s behalf resulted in a decision by NASA to revisit its media policy.
– pg. 123
We have fostered a network of youth media practitioners whose voices have improved the way society looks at young urban people of color, contributed new perspectives to public policy debates, and sowed the seeds for the next generation of journalists.
Pg 125
U.S. Programs
U.S. Justice Fund 17,029,000
Strategic Opportunities Fund 12,824,000
Special Chairman’s Fund 29,646,000
OSI-Washington, D.C. 2,492,000
OSI-Baltimore 4,479,000
Other U.S. Initiatives 7,622,000
Total U.S. Programs $74,092,000
note: The Strategic Opportunities Fund includes grants related to Hurricane Katrina ($1,652,841); media policy ($1,060,000); and politicization of science ($720,000). The Special Chairman’s Fund includes grants related to progressive legal infrastructure ($7,305,000); multi-issue policy infrastructure ($6,685,000); youth activism and leadership development ($3,561,000); civic engagement ($2,750,000); judicial nominations ($2,458,000); political reform ($500,000); and global warming ($455,000). Other U.S. Initiatives include: drug policy reform ($4,000,000); Youth Initiatives ($940,000); Medicine as a Profession ($500,000); After-School Program ($376,870); and other U.S. Programs. OSI-Baltimore expenditures include $1,127,330 in third party funds raised from outside donors.
Pg. 143
I can’t state that the entire $720,000 grant concerning the politicization of science went to support Dr. Hansen’s cause, but there seemed to be a pretty fair amount of effort exerted in that cause (e.g. Mark Bowen’s Censoring Science which appeared in 2008). A detailed accounting would be interesting.
For those of you who would like their very own copy of the Soros report:
http://www.soros.org/resources/articles_publications/publications/annual_20070731/a_complete.pdf
I think an examination of the 2007 and 2008 reports may also prove enlightening.
What’s frightening about this whole demonstration is that it looks a lot like the efforts of Hitler’s brown shirts to force the government to do what it really wanted to.

Man, that protest poetry is the closest to Vogon poetry that I’ve ever encountered. Scary.
If they get any worse, I fear that my large intestine will shoot up through my body and throttle my brain to save me from the unimaginable horror.
They’re hugging each other now. I hope it finishes soon, I don’t now if I can stand listening any more.
They’re now talking about how evil the Industrial Revolution was. I hope none of them took a car, plane or train to get there, that would be hypocritical.

Unfortunately, he was succesful. It is now the progressive thingy ordered by our Ministry of Education to all schools.

If Orwell could have seen the future:
2009 is a classic dystopian novel published in 1949, it is set in the eponymous year and focuses on a repressive, totalitarian regime. The story follows the life of one seemingly insignificant man, James Hansen, a civil servant assigned the task of falsifying records and politicizing science, thus effectively perpetuating propaganda, who grows disillusioned with his meagre existence and so begins a rebellion against the system.

March 2, 2009 1:34 pm

Interesting links, rephelan. George Soros owns hundreds of millions of dollars of coal producers, and he also funds James Hansen [and I read in an earlier thread that George Soros funds RealClimate, too].
I suppose cognitive dissonance explains why the alarmist contingent has no problem with being bought an paid for by someone they would otherwise label a filthy polluter. But with Soros it’s all for the cause, so it’s A-OK, right?

March 2, 2009 2:02 pm

There was an interesting conversation right in front of the camera when the protesters left. If I understood it correctly, some of the green helmet protesters questioned the organizers directly (more or less) as follows
“Why are we saying we have shut down the plant when we haven’t?” and
“The point of civil disobedience is to enforce the issue, and we are just leaving!?!”
That is what I thought I heard anyway.

Come to think of it, about a year ago a lot more people protested against Sciencetology, and year later they still do and in greater numbers.
I see a lot of similarities between the AGW and the teachings of Ron L. Hubbard, both peddle junkscience, are religious zealots, promoting pyramid schemes, blackmailing opponents or at least trying to discredit them by all means possible, have distorted view of reality and are being loved by Hollywood celebs.
And somehow AGW has the same problem as the Church of Ron, not enough people to protest in favour of them.

If Robert Kennedy Jr. says coal company CEO’s should go to jail for all eternity, where should oil company executives go, purgetory perhaps? And what about his brother Joe Kennedy distributing low cost oil throughout New England with the help of the largess of Hugo Chavez? Is this more like a misdemeanor? Wouldn’t it be more environmentally sound to help insulate rather than just heat?

I did a CTL-F for our good buddy Joel [snip] Shore, and shockingly he has not weighed-in on this topic. But I know you’re out there, [snip] Joel.
I will reiterate my request of Joel (and of ANY AGW advocate, for that matter); exactly WHAT physical evidence WOULD convince you that Anthropogenic Global Warming based on atmospheric CO2 is an invalid theory?
For my part, I would have STARTED to be concerned that AGW was a valid theory IF (a) there had been a concerted effort by AGW folks to clean-up temperature data sources over the last 10 years, AND (b) temperatures from those sources had actually gone UP in that time frame AND (c) AGW folks had had the courage of their convictions to actually mounted a serious proactive campaign to “fix” atmospheric carbon [by, say, actually PLANTING TREES; heck, there’s already a pre-existing “holiday” for it called Arbor Day. Still baffles me why AGW hasn’t adopted that old orphan]. That’s what would have convinced me that AGW might be a serious issue.
My grandfather was president of the Mass Forestry Association, the “father of town forests” and on Teddy Roosevelt’s committe that created Yellowstone. I would have gladly lend a hand with a little “reforestation” in his honor.
But I am still waiting for a response from ANY AGW [snip] on what would constitute “disproof” of the AGW theory. It’s as if they can’t even CONTEMPLATE the notion that the theory might be incorrect, much as [snip] have no room in their minds for doubt of any kind.
Meanwhile, down here it’s March, but up in the sky, still no spots.
Is it just me, or, as we would say in Texas, is The Almighty fixin’ to go all Old Testament on our ass?

There were a few dozen protesters in some pictures. Even if there were 10X as many off camera, it sure as heck did not look like “thousands of activists.” ( A few hundred ill-informed eco-weenies I could buy. ☺)

Bear also in mind the conflicting interests of the socialist ex-Mayor of London Ken Livingstone.
He instituted the Congestion Charge on Central London to force drivers to pay to enter their own city by car. The charge was implemented to “lower traffic, clean up the air, lower carbon emissions, and get Londoners to use public transport”. There was a promise that the money raised by the Congestion Charge was going to improve public transport.
Did it? No. Did it lower traffic congestion? No.
But Ken Livingstone did invite Hugo Chavez to a Socialist Conference to herald the comin of worldwide socialism.
Livingstone then attempted to enter a little business arrangement with Chavez. Red Ken promised Londoners that cheap oil from Venezuela would keep gas prices down, but at what cost?
Livingstone was in the process of hiking the Congestion Charge from £10 a day to at least £25 a day, but lost the Mayor’s Election to Boris Johnson (a global warming skeptic who claimed it is a daft religion but has since embraced some green language) before he could increase the cost of living and working in London.
The money Livingstone was going to raise from taxing Londoners was going to fuel the spread of socialist dictatorships in South America.
Currently Red Ken is talking up a bid to run as mayor again. A socialist’s thirst for power never fades away.

Kennedy also went on a quick rant about how evil coal was, and all the “destruction” it causes. Alluding to how entire mountains are leveled and as much explosive energy is released mining coal as a hiroshima bomb every week (as I recall). He went on to say that coal mining needs to be shut down.
I’m sure all the union coal miners that voted for President Obama on the basis of his support of unions and his comments on clean coal are beginning to wonder what they voted into office. I am sure that rant will play well in the coal field country.

From reading the comments it looks like most of the people there were college age. They probably felt like they are doing something good in the world by being there. And I understand that. I also saw him talking about the Steig paper in Nature that “Barring their acceptance of publishing a rebuttal, perhaps we should consider a full page ad in Nature. I think we could garner enough financial support from readers to make that happen. – Anthony”. Also a good idea. I think many, if not all, of us here want to inform the public about the real science of AGW.
But I have an idea that I have been mulling over for some time : I think that commenters at WUWT, in a joint venture with commenters ClimateAudit, (if they wanted to) and any other blog (if they wanted to) could purchase a 90 minute block in prime time of one of the big four t.v. channels and air “The Great Global Warming Swindle” in its entirety.

To Charles of Moderation
I am confused by at least SOME fo your snippage.
The first snip connected Mr. Joel Shore obliquely to a Hollywood persona (note that I didn’t say “actor”) of the same surname name. If you’ve see any of his movies, you would agree that that comment DESERVED a [snip]. Mea Culpa.
HOWEVER, the next-to-last of the [snip]s referred to “AGW acolytes”.
I REALLY can’t see anything wrong with that one
ac·o·lyte (k-lt)
n.
1. One who assists the celebrant in the performance of liturgical rites.
2. A devoted follower or attendant.
Continuing in the same vein, the last [snip] referred to “The Faithful (regardless of sect)”.
What exactly ARE the ground rules, please?
Apparently I may refer to AGW as a quasi-religion (as others have repeated done), but NOT refer to the practitioners as “acolytes” or compare them to The Fatihful (regardless of sect)?
If as I suspect the Hollywood reference put you off your feed and unleased your inner snipper, that’s understandable (especially if you paid good money for one of them movies). But I really don’t want to offend anyone, just annoy.
So to paraphrase the Warren Court, what ARE the community standards?
Reply: Your analysis is mostly correct. But simply put, do not use pejoratives against other posters. The actor reference may have been meant to be funny, but in the context of your other statements it was a piling on of insults. It is true, that reference to AGW as a religion in general are usually allowed, but when this concept is directed at other posters it is an attempt to cast the opponent as un-thinking believer and in this context is not allowed. We are trying to make this site a place where serious respectful discussions can take place. Despite its usual allowance, the AGW as religion meme has been beaten to death, and at some future date may not be allowed at all.

“I’d like to do a cost benefit comparison of them and us using carbon dioxide emissions as the unit of value.
“A highlight was the Greenpeace truck and trailer with a big solar panel on top. It was covered with snow, so they had to use their generator for the sound system.”

Ron de Haan,
Interesting articles. I enjoyed the report of only “five hundred” protesters. Since there were over 90 organizations listed as attending, that doesn’t leave very many protesting from the general public. Probably several from each organization who attended had their expenses paid by one of the dozens of interlocking Soros organizations, since that’s how Soros has always operated.
The article said flights were delayed, including Pelosi’s, and that’s why she couldn’t attend. But read between the lines:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi… cancelled her appearance at the rally because her flight to Washington was cancelled.

Pelosi’s flight was canceled, eh? But later her office changed that to ‘delayed.’ And they refused to say whether she took public transportation, or her own jet [which in itself tells you the answer].
Apparently the writer is unaware that the Speaker of the House has her own private, taxpayer-paid jetliner. Since a little snow wouldn’t stop her U.S. Air Force pilots, the message is pretty clear: Pelosi was hiding out from the rally.
Same with House Select Energy Independence and Global Warming Chairman Edward Markey [D-Craven], who canceled his appearance due to the weather… but later on he changed his story, claiming it was a “scheduling conflict.” So the rally organizers were given the *ahem* cold shoulder. Obviously Markey was hiding out from them just like Pelosi. So, where was Markey? He says that’s a secret. Ice fishing, maybe?
It’s funny listening to all the spin from politicians trying to back and fill. And it’s sad, too, that the few hundred kids who showed up to shiver for Pelosi and Markey were surely somebody else’s useful tools.

“It is true, that reference to AGW as a religion in general are usually allowed, but when this concept is directed at other posters it is an attempt to cast the opponent as un-thinking believer and in this context is not allowed.”
Seems to be a fair criteria, and right. It’s going to be hard to find a fair criteria to eliminate all references to AGW as a religion though. If you wanted to do that it may be that you may have to say something like “WUWT understands the vein of thought that AGW is analogous to a religion but WUWT has chosen to not follow that line of thought in what it allows in it’s comment threads. Instead WUWT would rather have comments more closely related to data, scientific findings, and the sociology of AGW”.
But again, I think it’s going to be hard to eliminate any reference to religion since some of AGW is taken by pure faith, blind belief, like some of the teachings in a religion.
Michael Crichton compares environmentalism to religion. Maybe seeing what he has to say about it will help WUWT decide how to handle talk of religion and AGW.

Sort of keeping an eye on the protest today. Seems it was a dud with perhaps a few hundred actual protesters. There is almost nothing in the MSM on the event. (Certainly not on the MSM webpages thus far.)
Is that because it was a de facto flop and therefore no sensational story to report? The poor attendance goes counter to the MSM’s efforts to promote the concepts of consensus, massive concern, massive public support, urgent action needed … ad nauseum. The BIG story should have been the lack of attendees right?
Had there been (say) 20,000 protesters, would it have been on the six o’clock news? A big attendance would have meant that there was yet another sensational story to report in support of AGW. Just musing aloud.

There was a segment on it on Fox in the Bret Bair Report. Brit Hume covered it (he is the senior anchor by the way) and the coverage included a sense of ironic humor that they were freezing their buns off in the cold protesting global warming.
The most significant observation he made however, was that global warming was not a scientific “fact” but a “consensus” of opinion which is a lower standard, and it is the theory but not proven, and he did comment that a fair number of qualified scientists do not concur with the “consensus”.
It was not open ridicule or sniping, but it did have a humorous overtone and it was clear to me from the video that the turnout was not all that impressive.
It seems to me that Fox has been more open and even handed on coverage of global warming issues than the other MSM, and may be finding some traction on this topic as their coverage seems to have picked up recently.
Given their ratings that is significant — FNC has been the top rated cable news network for 86 consecutive months, finishing February as the third most watched basic cable network in primetime.

The news channels are as frustrating as being single but craving companionship. If only I could mix and match, cut and paste, pick and choose, and create my very own pop bead animal. The head would be this, the body that, and the tail yet another thing. If I could mix the old standby channel from one of the three networks I watched as a kid (NBC, CBS, Chet, David, and Walter where are you) with some of the conservative channels (IE Fox), some of the liberal channels (IE MSNBC), and some of the metrosexual channels (IE CNN), with the strictly NPR and CSPAN bunch, I would be in companion bliss.

So I take it that the plant kept burning coal and was not shut down. That several guest speakers decided to cancel due to cold, and that the phrase “thousands showed up” meant that they were also counting the number of people on the subway, cars, buses, and overhead jets that happened to be going buy. Reminds me of the population of Lostine. The people in hwy 82 traffic going through town are counted. Hey, every body helps us look like the metropolis we are.

Here is some coverage of the rally:
http://www.physorg.com/news155239985.html
Thousands rally for legislation on climate change
“An enthusiastic crowd of mostly young people marched from a park near the Capitol to the power plant several blocks away, where they planned to block entrances and were prepared to get arrested. The group chanted along the way, “We don’t want the world to boil, no coal, no oil!”
The group met about a dozen counter-demonstrators who held signs reading: “Our economy runs on coal.” The counter-demonstrators argued that coal is affordable and that renewable alternatives to coal-fired power plants won’t meet a growing demand for electricity.
The Capitol power plant hasn’t generated electricity since 1952, but it does provide steam for heating and chilled water for cooling buildings within the Capitol complex.
The protest on energy and climate comes as Washington digs out from its largest snowfall of the season. Organizers note that climate change causes more extreme weather, and they say the issue is important enough that people are willing to brave the cold.
“God has a sense of humor,” said protester Rhody Streeter, of Louisville, Ky., referring to the weather.”

Well, Nancy Pelosi did not make it to the protest, but some other politicians did, including local Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen. He had this to say:
“Wasn’t it terrific to hear the president of the United States say that our energy policy is going to based on the facts and on the science and not on political ideology and science fiction?”
and
“The science has told us one thing. The time for talking about this problem is over; the time for action is now.”

Contradiction #1:
IPCC projects global warming at a rate of 0.2C per decade in the early 21st century; so far the first 8 years of the 21st century have shown cooling at an average rate of around 0.1C per decade. Oops!

Contradiction #2:
IPCC states that the rate of sea level rise has increased in the latter part of the 20th century, switching from tide gauge records to satellite altimetry; the tide gauge record shows a slight decrease in sea level rise in the second half of the 20th century, as compared to the first half. Hmm…

http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2007/2006GL028492.shtml
Contradiction #3:
IPCC states that changes in solar irradiance since 1750 are estimated to cause a radiative forcing of only 0.12 W/m^2, equivalent to a net warming of around 0.02C; several studies by solar scientists conclude that the 20th century warming caused by the unusually high level of solar activity is around 0.35C. (I’ve got more, but that should do)
Contradiction #4:
IPCC states that the warmth of the last half century is unusual in at least the previous 1,300 years, ignoring overwhelming physical and historical evidence of a warmer global Medieval Warm Period. Huh?

http://www.ncasi.org/publications/Detail.aspx?id=3025
(plus many historical references from all over the civilized world at the time, in addition to many reports of physical evidence disci=overed under receding glaciers)
Contradiction #5:
IPCC claims that the satellite temperature record has shown a faster rate of tropospheric warming than that at the surface, confirming the anthropogenic cause of warming; both the satellite and radiosonde record show less warming than the surface record. Oops!
http://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar4/wg1/ar4-wg1-chapter3.pdf
(See links to satellite and surface temperature records cited in #1 above)
Contradiction #6:
IPCC models all assume a strongly positive feedback from clouds with warming, resulting in 1.3C of the total assumed 2xCO2 climate sensitivity of 3.2C; actual physical observations show a strongly negative net feedback from clouds of around the same order of magnitude; correcting the 2xCO2 climate sensitivity for this factor brings it to around 0.6 to 0.8C, rather than 3.2C. Ouch!
http://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar4/wg1/ar4-wg1-chapter8.pdf
http://blog.acton.org/uploads/Spencer_07GRL.pdf
Contradiction #7:
IPCC staes confidently that the upward distortion of the surface temperature record due to the urban heat island effect has a negligible influence of less than 0.006C per decade; many studies from all over the world show that the UHI influence is thirty to fifty times as great as claimed by IPCC. Oh, oh!

It is pitiful to watch, the once leading nation of the world, infected by such a noxious psychic disease, which resembles that of the Nazi rise in Germany. Hope you can stop this madness before is too late.

I would only point out that the name stood for National State Socialist… and now that we are a socialist economy it’s not surprising that their would be similarities in the socialist rhetoric.
Oddly enough, my neighbor (aeronautic engineer – masters) & spouse are planning to move to South America (somewhere near the equator, I forget where). My Mercedes mechanic ( from Germany ) is talking about selling his business and heading to Brazil with his Brazilian wife. My spouses childhood friend moved to Chile a few years back.
So I’m now thinking “Argentina, Chile, Brazil, ???” Leaning toward Chile due to the Mediterranean climate and wines… I’m OK with Spanish (it was my first second language 😉 and can sort of read Portuguese (close enough to Spanish, French, Esperanto, etc. to make good guesses) but the sounds are still hard for me to track. Then there are the French and English speaking islands and former colonies. Decisions decisions…
Folks with money and skills looking to get out of Dodge…
So Adolfo, you live down that way… You have any suggestions? (No, I don’t mean “stay home” 😉 Any ideas where all us US Expatriots (to be) would be most at ease? (My money is already invested in Brazil, so I’m not worried about the dollar any more…) Anybody down there need experienced computer programers or project managers? Professional teachers with US credentials and poor/accented Spanish? Retired guy with ‘accounts’?
I give it about another 3 months for the wheels to come of or for POTUS to moderate. I’m not holding out for moderation…

The trouble is, that with the USA heading towards socialism there will be nowhere for disaffected Brazilans to escape to.

I don’t mean this to judgmental at all, but when someone can consider leaving his country, that means he has no patriotism, no love of his country or sense of a national identity. I submit that may be what got us into this mess to begin with. But then, the Leftist school, news and entertainment systems have been undermining that aspect of our world view for at least the last generation, so it should be no surprise that at the first sign of national trouble one’s first thought is of where one can go to escape it.
