Look at this this way… plastics may last a long time in the environment. Their degradation takes a long time but that also means that the leeching of chemicals takes also a long time… enough time for the environment to absorb and dilute the stuff. This is not the case of biodegradable products. They degrade fast and sature the environment with all sorts of broken down chemicals. The environment does not have the time to absorb the stuff.

And of course “a long time” is very relative.

What is the resource depletion (oil, mostly) of making those million CD’s? And what is the land fill pollution when they are thrown away? After all, plastic lasts for millions of years, according to the ecos.

Ted Annonson: How about explaining to your kid that hunters can kill deer because the water the deer drink isn’t poison and won’t kill the hunters if they eat it. This had to be un-learned by my daughter last year. . . After Earth Day and a presentation of the movie on storyofstuff.com with a enviroloon presenter.

I’m certain the message got mangled some since my daughter is 6, but if that’s the impression that she came home with then the presentation was terrible.

I remember about one of these blogs that reported on someone who recieved a bunch of letters from a grade school class saying that he was a lier and a criminal for reporting evidence that AGW was a scam, and that he should go to jail.
Also there’s that game for children that counts their carbon footprint and tells them when they should die “TO SAVE THE PLANET”.
I don’t know if that kind of stuff is going on in the schools around here, my boys are both grown up, But if I had grade school kids, I’ed sure find out what they were being taught.

Good grief. The girl probably doesn’t know the difference between ice cubes and ice tea. This is all marketing. Same thing occured in the 70s and 80s with the nuke freeze, save the whales, and Farm Aid. I wouldn’t put too much in to this.
