actually, the Viking landers had meteorology instruments - I was part of a group called Delta Vee who gave money to NASA to keep collecting data from the landers after the planed missions had finished, I used to dial up the latest picture and temp over blazing fast 300bps modem

After 22 years in the military I can tell you that the weather rock works and it works everytime. I have never known it to fail. On every airfield that I was stationed there was one hanging from a post usually just out side the operations office window with the observation interpretation posted next to the window. Of course we did call the Air force met office to confirm the findings of the rock. Being Army aviation we were considered low tech in their eyes, but it did make you wonder why they had a weather rock also.

Oh the joy of multimillion dollar humor, if we didn't laugh we would have to cry.
At least they did tech it up some. And I am glad it survived the flight and the
landing.

Using the CRN guidelines would probably lead to a poor rating - there's a heck of a lot of lander and solar panel underneath the weather station. :D At least there's no concerns about overhanging trees, and the terrain does seem fairly representative. Except for the hunk of metal. ;)
