I’ve read that comparison many times since the photo was released, but there is (or appears to be) one important difference: the lack of mountain ranges. Step outside and look at the Moon with a pair of 10X50 binoculars. The mountains are obvious. I can’t see anything similar in the photo of Mercury.

Gives a clue about the tidal stresses, maybe?
