The big business aspect is difficult, but the amount of money required to do the research is enourmous too and often the research leads to a dead end. I don't know what the answer is other than to have a little faith and let the law and the market work. I know I wouldn't want to spend twenty to thirty years or so, and billions of dollars, just so someone else could breeze in to gobble up the fruits of my labor. As with all new technology and discovery the very wealthy benefit first...that's just the way it is. What they do is pay the upfront costs and eventually the price comes down and the product is then more widely available.

What a blessing to the world their work will bring if it pans out.

It's too bad that the big business of finding a cure for cancer.... is a big business. Because, that means patents happen and they then become roadblocks to research or it results in corporate trade secrets.

All this means, either a lot of duplicated efforts by researchers, or roads they can not travel thanks to somebody elses patent rights.

I think every research agency that receives federal funding (Johns Hopkins) ought to have it's research results open to anyone and NO patents.

I wish it would be a collective effort like we've seen with some free and open internet projects, but obviously this is far more important to humanity than some internet software. This is of course more reason for cancer research to be a collective endeavor for the sake of ... humanity.

I thought that saving lives is what being a doctor was all about or is it getting to be more about business and profits?
